• spring security login pages?

  I have some confusion with how spring security works: In my application, I need to have a login page for users after which they are redirected back the page from where they came. I went through a few spring security tutorials and read some articles, and the examples work by securing a certain page on a site (managed by the <intercept url ..> tag). Then Spring security will generate a login page (or you can specify your own) in order to access the secured page. I am confused because I don't want to necessary secure a given page on my site: I want a login page for users to log into after which they have access to elevated features of the site (through spring security's authorization features). My question is: given what I described, what would be the strategy to create this login page which, after login, would grant the logged in user the appropriate authorities? The hack I thought of would be to create a simple JSP page who's only function is to redirect back to the previous page. Then I would use Spring Security to secure that JSP page. But it seems like there should be a better way of doing this... Thanks

• EJB3 Business Delegates

  Is there any reason for making delegate when using EJB3? Because the only real benefit i see from delegate is that it allows to hide lookup and access details of EJB architecture. Well it also provides some decoupling but it's mostly unused, imho. With EJB3 we have injection so now i can just create a variable with @EJB annotation and use it as is. Do i still need delegates? Is this injection resource consuming? I mean if i use it in JSF's request managed beans may be it's still better to use delegates just to lessen these injection calls? Thank you!

• How can I log and retrieve error messages from a client-side desktop app?

  Update: The service-based answers below are most likely the way to go, I am also curious to see if there are any out-the-box solutions anyone has tried in the field. Our system uses a client-server architecture, and with more clients using it I'm thinking of better ways to log client application errors, and get them sent to us. Currently we just show a simple error message, with a button that preps an email (with the default system email client) and the clients send this on to our support address. This contains extra info like the stack trace. We also tried saving errors to a network share in the company, but I'm not too keen on that archaic solution either. Now there are only two businesses that refer to clients as users, and I'm sure some of ours support both lifestyles, as they just ignore the email button, and sends a full screen-shot wrapped nicely in a word document. Some factors I'm thinking of include A solution to log errors, like the contrived one above, A robust solution; Logging to a SQL database won't work; if that fails too, then what? Is at least semi-automated, preferably to the point where the logs reach my side. It copes with load, our client base is growing and the current solution, and our inboxes, won't hold up. Minimise installing extra 3rd party components on clients, I want to keep the SPOF to a min. I'd love to hear about any experience or suggestions you have on how I can implement such a solution. System Details It's a Microsoft .Net 2 based system with a SQL backend. Some users work remotely over the net, so network shares aren't always available (unless they VPN, which is awesomely slow at any rate). We have users across different companies, their DB's are hosted on-site. We have remote access to 90% of them.

• How to create an Audio CD using C# or Java

  I'm looking for an API that would allow me to create an audio CD from within a C# application. The CDs are to be created and closed in the same session (no rewrite required). Basically, my application locates files on behalf of a user, and, if a blank CD is present in the drive, creates an audio CD for the user. If no CD is present, it checks to see if there's a USB drive attached and copies the files there (this part I already know how to do). I would prefer to write this application in either C# or Java, as I'm most comfortable with those, but I don't know how hard it would be to create CDs using either language. There are several other questions here that deal with regular CDs, but I didn't see any discussing audio CDs.

• Get coordinates of google maps markers

  I am creating a databse containing the names and coordinates of all bus stops in my local area. I have all the names stored in my database, and now I need to add the coordinates. I am trying to get these of a website that contains them all as placemarks on a google map. It seems to me like they are being generated from a local server, and then added to the map. However I am unable to find exactly where the server is queried for the coordinates. I am hoping to collect these coordinates through the use of a screen scraper. However unless I am able to find where in the source code the coordinates are created this seems to be impossible. I can of course search and collect all these placemarks manually, but that will be very time consuming. So I am hoping that someone in here can help me. This is the website I am trying to scrape. • Majordomo/Mailman - Yahoo/Google Groups

  Hi. Not an app question, but thought that I might ask here anyway! The responses might help someone. I've got an app where we're going to be dealing with 5000-10000 people in a group/pool. Periodically, different subsets of people will break off in their own group. I'm looking for thoughts on how to manage/approach this situation. (For now, all of this is being managed on a few servers in the garage, with dynamic IP) I've looked into the Yahoo/google groups, and they seem to be reasonable. The primary issue that I see with this approach, is that I don't have a good way of quickly/easily alowing a subset of the group to form their own group for a given project. This kind of function is critical. The upside to this though, I wouldn't have to really set anything up. And the hosted groups could send emails to the user all day along, without running into cap/bandwidth limits The other approach is a managed list, like mailman/majordomo. This approach appears to be more flexible, and looks like ti could be modified to handle the quick creation of lists, allowing users to quickly be assigned to different lists on the fly.. The downside, I'd have to run my own Mailman/Majordomo instance, as well as the associated mail server. Or I could look at possibly using one of the hosted service.. But this is for a project on the cheap, so we're really trying to keep costs down. Thoughts/Comments/Pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance -tom

  i use proguard (support in mtj plugin) to obfuscate a project that has some third party jars but i gives me errors: Your input classes appear to be inconsistent. You may need to recompile them and try again. Alternatively, you may have to specify the options '-dontskipnonpubliclibraryclasses' and/or '-dontskipnonpubliclibraryclassmembers'. It seems that proguard use the classes in JavaSE. It only happens with projects that use third party jars :( Thank you in advanced!

• Authenticating to Google Search Appliance using Basic HTTP auth and ASP.NET (VB)

  I've run into a snag though which has to do with authentication between the Google Search Appliance and ASP. Normally, when asking for secure pages from the search appliance, the search appliance asks for credentials, then uses these credentials to try and access the secure results. If this attempt is successful, the page shows up in the results list. Since ASP is contacting the search appliance on the client's behalf, it will need to collect credentials and pass them along to the search appliance. I have tried a couple of different documented ways of accomplishing this, but they don't seem to work.   I am storing values and date values in a record store. I have my date field set up like this: StartDate = new DateField("Start Date ", DateField.DATE); cal1 = Calendar.getInstance(); cal1.set(Calendar.YEAR, 2009); cal1.set(Calendar.MONTH, 0); cal1.set(Calendar.DAY_OF_MONTH, 1); StartDate.setDate(cal1.getTime()); and I save the date as a string as follows: strStartDate = cal1.get(cal1.DAY_OF_MONTH) + "/" + (cal1.get(cal1.MONTH) + 1) + "/" + cal1.get(cal1.YEAR); String detailsToAdd = strStartDate (I have shortened the code.) Now, I want to be able to edit the date at a future stage. However, I need the code to be able to do this. So far I have: EStartDate = new DateField("Start Date ", DateField.DATE); I had to change the name of the DateField box as this was conflicting with other things. I basically need to be able to show the selected record's date attribute. I currently have the other information displayed. I just need to be able to show the correct date. When I run the program the date field says <date>. Any help will be nice

• jQuery Autocomplete Json Ajax cross browser issue with Google Search Appliance

  I am implementing a jquery autocomplete on a search form and am getting the suggestions from the Google Search Appliance Autocomple suggestions service which returns a result set in json. What I am trying to do is go off to the GSA to get suggestions when the user types something in the search box. The url to get the json suggestions is as follows: http://gsaurl/suggest?q=<query>&max=10&site=default_site&client=default_frontend&access=p&format=rich The json which is returned is as follows: { "query":"re", "results": [ {"name":"red", "type":"suggest"}, {"name":"read", "type":"suggest"}] } The jQuery autocomplete code is as follows: $(#q).autocomplete(searchUrl, { width: 320, dataType: 'json', highlight: false, scroll: true, scrollHeight: 300, parse: function(data) { var array = new Array(); for(var i=0;i<data.results.length;i++) { array[i] = { data: data.results[i], value: data.results[i].name, result: data.results[i].name }; } return array; }, formatItem: function(row) { return row.name; } }); This works in IE but fails in firefox as the data returned in the parse function is null. Any ideas why this would be the case? Workaround I created an aspx page to call the GSA suggest service and to return the json from the suggest service. Using this page as a proxy and setting it as the url in the jQuery autocomplete worked in both IE and FireFox.

• Set initial view with SkpWriter in Google Sketchup C++ SDK

  How do you set the initial view for the model in an SKP file created with the SkpWriter in Google Sketchup C++ SDK? There has been an example in an older version of the SDK. Part of the source is posted here. I'm trying to use: m_pDoc->GetModel()->SetCamera(cameraDefn); The problem is that I'm not able to create a valid atlast::sketchup::CCameraDefinition. Non of the examples in the above post works: atlast::sketchup::CCameraDefinition cameraDefn; cameraDefn.Set(atlast::geometry::CPoint3d(793.838, -1262.6, 2603.16), atlast::geometry::CPoint3d(567.977, 338.199, 398.932), atlast::geometry::CUnitVector3d(-0.112657, 0.798459, 0.591415)); and: atlast::sketchup::CCameraDefinition cameraDefn; cameraDefn.Set(atlast::geometry::CPoint3d(793.838, -1262.6, 2603.16), atlast::geometry::CPoint3d(567.977, 338.199, 398.932), atlast::geometry::CUnitVector3d(-0.112657, 0.798459, 0.591415)); In the end I want the initial view to be the view you get from pressing the icon for Zoom extents followed by the Iso icon (the other way around is also ok). Right now I would settle for creating a valid atlast::sketchup::CCameraDefinition. Any better way to achieve this in the SKP-file?

• Data in J2ME RecordStore does not persist across sessions

  I'm building a mobile app with J2ME, and I've found that the data I write into a RecordStore can be accessed while the program is still running but it is lost after quitting and restarting it. No exception is thrown, the data is simply lost. UPDATE: Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I'm using NetBeans on Windows 7. I'm not sure if it is using the WTK version I have previously installed or another one it has installed somewhere else. I've checked my WTK folder for the files Pavel wrote about, but couldn't find them. • Bluray Burner in Java - Where to start?

  Like the subject of this post suggests, I am looking at developing a suite like nero which helps burn bluray discs. I am kind of clueless as to where to start. Is there anything in Java API that lets you do this? If I were to start from scratch, would I need to start with the bluray disc spec? Are there any open source tools which are already doing this? I tried searching at sourceforge.net and found nothing useful. Any help is much appreciated.

  I need to optimize a java application. It makes some 3rd party calls. I need some good tool to accurately measure the time taken by individual api calls. To give an idea of complexity- the application takes a data source file containing 10 lakh rows, and it takes around one hour to complete the processing. As a part of processing , it makes some 3rd party calls (including some network calls). I need to identify which calls are taking more time then others, and based on that, find out a way to optimize the application. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  I think this is a pretty basic question, but after Googling around I can't seem to find the answer. What I need is a way to log some custom output with log4j during Spring bean construction. I have a factory class called ResponderFactory (being used as an instance factory in Spring) with a factory method that can throw 2 different types of exception. public CollectorResponder collectorResponder(String inputQueueName) throws ConfigurationException, BrokerConnectionException {} Now, normally I could wrap a call to this method in a try-catch block with 2 catch clauses to handle the logging situations for each of the exceptions. We want our own CSS to apply to this HTML. But as it replace whole HTML and it have its own CSS we are unable to set our CSS. We are doing this in GWT. Is there any way we can get the list of fans so we can display it as we want and can apply css? Or check given user is fan of page?

• Is JAX-RS suitable as a MVC framework?

  JAX-RS has some MVC support, but I wonder if JAX-RS is really a good choice to build web application for human use. If a user enters wrong or incomplete information in a form, it should be displayed again like with Grails or Wicket. Is there a comfortable way to do this with JAX-RS? As far as I know the URI mapping doesn't work correctly, if not all required parameters are given or there are type conversion problems (with Date for example). Is that correct? Is there support for internationalized templates?

• Advanced Java book in the lines of CLR via c# or C# in Depth?

  I want to learn about how things work in depth in Java. Coming from a c# background, there were a couple of very good books that go really deep in c# (C# in depth, CLR via c#, just to name the most popular). Is there anything like that in Java? I searched it up on amazon but nothing seemed to go that deep in Java as the two above go in c#. I don't want to know more about specific classes, or how to use this library or that other library, I want to learn how the objects are created on memory, how they get created on the stack, heap, etc. A more fundamental knowledge, let's say. I've read some chapters of Effective Java and The Java Programming Language but they don't seem to go so deep as I'd want them to go. Maybe there are other people that know both c# and Java that have read any of the referred books and know any that might be useful? Thanks
