  • Strategies for testing reactive, asynchronous code

    I am developing a data-flow oriented domain-specific language. To simplify, let's just look at Operations. Operations have a number of named parameters and can be asked to compute their result using their current state. To decide when an Operation should produce a result, it gets a Decision that is sensitive to which parameter got a value from who. When this Decision decides that it is fulfilled, it emits a Signal using an Observer. An Accessor listens for this Signal and in turn calls the Result method of the Operation in order to multiplex it to the parameters of other Operations. So far, so good, nicely decoupled design, composable and reusable and, depending on the specific Observer used, as asynchronous as you want it to be. Now here's my problem: I would love to start coding actual Tests against this design. But with an asynchronous Observer... how should I know that the whole signal-and-parameters-plumbing worked? Do I need to use time outs while waiting for a Signal in order to say that it was emitted successfully or not? How can I be, formally, sure that the Signal will not be emitted if I just wait a little longer (halting problem? ;-)) And, how can I be sure that the Signal was emitted because it was me who set a parameter, and not another Operation? It might well be that my test comes to early and sees a Signal that was emitted way before my setting a parameter caused a Decision to emit it. Currently, I guess the trivial cases are easy to test, but as soon as I want to test complex many-to-many - situations between operations I must resort to hoping that the design Just Works (tm)...

    C++ is my first language, and as such I'm used to whitespace being ignored. However, I've been toying around with Python, and I don't find it too hard to get used to the whitespace rules. It seems, however, that a lot of programmers on the Internet can't get past the whitespace rules. From what I've seen, peoples' C++ programs tend to be formatted very consistently with respect to whitespace (or else it's pretty hard to read), so why do some people have such a problem with whitespace-based languages like Python?

  • Mirroring git and mercurial repos the lazy way

    I maintain Python Koans on mirrored on both Github using git and Bitbucket using mercurial. I get pull requests from both repos but it turns out keeping the two repos in sync is pretty easy. Here is how it's done... Assuming I’m starting again on a clean laptop, first I clone both repos ~/git $ hg clone https://bitbucket.org/gregmalcolm/python_koans ~/git $ git clone [email protected]:gregmalcolm/python_koans.git python_koans2 The only thing that makes a folder a git or mercurial repository is the .hg folder in the root of python_koans and the .git folder in the root of python_koans2.   • Change the default program for a filetype to something not in "Program Files" in Windows Vista

    I'm trying to make my python scripts run in python 2.6 by default when run from the command line. This is paired with adding certain scripts to the PATH variable and .py to PATHEXT for convenience. But I'll be damned if I can get the file type association to work. In the default programs dialog (found in control panel) I find .py, and click "Change Program." This gives me the same dialog as clicking "Open with..." on a file's context menu. I search for python. Tell it to use python, but it doesn't add it to the list of programs I am allowed to use. I tried making a shortcut to python in Program Files, but that won't work either. If I copy python into a folder in Program Files, then that works. But why can't I just point it at C:\python26\python.exe (which is in the PATH variable) in the first place? Is there a way around this, or do I have to just reinstall python into Program Files?

  • What would cause an .exe to vanish without a trace?

    I have a few computers. One computer, at home, one day suddenly had its pgbouncer.exe vanish. The antivirus didn't have it in its virus chest [avast]. I couldn't find the bgbouncer anywhere. All the other pgbouncer files remained where they used to be, except the exe had vanished. I hadn't uninstalled it, nor had anyone else used the machine. I hadn't installed any new software since the previous time I had used it either. Just now, however, my TV computer was running out of disk space, which was weird because I had python setup to do transcoding and archiving. I logged in and voila! python.exe had vanished !! Once again, Avast.exe didn't have it in its virus chest, and dunno! I do this time, with the TV computer, know exactly the date that python vanished. Sat the 18th my python scripts ran fine. Sat the 19th python was gone. I'm going to do some hunting in the event log to see what happened that day. But if anyone has experienced vanishings before and has a clue what happened, I would like to know. FYI: Both computers (bgbouncer vanish and python vanish) were running Win7 with the RDP hack and both on SSDs and both with Avast. Both computers had all windows updates set to manual(to prevent random stuff changing!) and neither had recently had any windows updates manually applied. FYI2: Tv computer had since the beginning of October dropbox running all the time trying to download two files. Sadly, a temporary download of each of these two files by dropbox resulted in Avast freaking out and virus-chesting them, and then dropbox downloading them partially again, before being dropboxed. Now, these two files were binaries from a program I had personally written and were clean on other machines. Since the python vanishing I have deleted these two binaries from dropbox (using the website) and dropbox exe on the tv computer is now at peace. I don't think this should cause python.exe to vanish though :/ New edit: On the 18/10/2013, at 0742 my python script ended with an error: "file still in use" which was unexpected but I shrugged it off since sometimes media portal doesn't release the recording. But on second thoughts is weird since the show in use would have been finished recording the day before. On the 18/10/2013 at 0807 the windows event log complains that several drivers required for CutePDF, send to onenote 2010, send to onenote 2013, microsoft xps document writer aren't installed. I just checked now and indeed those printers have vanished! New update! I found my python.exe that had been removed. It was still in the C:\Python33\ directory except it had been renamed to a random string charater.tmp (ie, it was made into a temp file) with a creation date of 19/10/2013 at 0600:02 am. Now, the computer normally wakes at 6am to do transcoding. What could have moved my python file into a tmp file?

    I need to run a python script in a terminal, myscript.py at startup (on Lubunt). This script requires root. I've setup a .desktop file that runs the following command: lxterminal --command="python /home/d/Jarvis/alarm.py && /bin/bash" The terminal window opens at startup and runs the script, but then closes when the Python script returns an error (because it's not being run as root). When I change the Exec= to this... lxterminal --command="sudo python /home/d/Jarvis/alarm.py && /bin/bash" ... (prefixing command with 'sudo') which works. However, the terminal opens on startup and displays the [sudo] password for d: \ prompt, requiring me to input my password. I would like the execution of the python script at startup to be completely automatic with no user interaction. How can I accomplish this?

  • sigwait in Linux (Fedora 13) vs OS X

    So I'm trying to create a signal handler using pthreads which works on both OS X and Linux. The code below works on OS X but doesn't work on Fedora 13. The application is fairly simple. It spawns a pthread, registers SIGHUP and waits for a signal. After spawning the signal handler I block SIGHUP in the main thread so the signal should only be sent to the signal_handler thread. On OS X this works fine, if I compile, run and send SIGHUP to the process it prints "Got SIGHUP". On Linux it just kills the process (and prints Hangup). If I comment out the signal_handler pthread_create the application doesn't die. I know the application gets to the sigwait and blocks but instead of return the signal code it just kills the application.     I've been using dpkg -S <package_name> to list the contents of a package. Sometimes I pipe to grep bin to quickly scan for executables. I just ran into a case where this didn't work out for me: $ which virtualenv $ sudo apt-get install python-virtualenv Reading package lists... Done ... Setting up python-virtualenv (1.7.1.2-1) ... $ which virtualenv /usr/bin/virtualenv $ dpkg -S /usr/bin/virtualenv python-virtualenv: /usr/bin/virtualenv $ dpkg -S python-virtualenv | grep bin $ /usr/bin/virtualenv seems to be provided by python-virtualenv, but isn't listed in the package contents provided by dpkg -S. All the while, passing /usr/bin/virtualenv to dpkg -S returns that the file comes from python-virtualenv. Can you all explain this?

    Hello! I have an old machine, and I want to use for that to learn employees how to use Ubuntu, and to be easyer to switch from Windows. I've been installed 10.04, and updated, but this strange stuff is happend. Graphical installion failed, same strange thing. With alternate workd. Sometimes, when I boot up, a boot message displayed: Keyboard failure..., often diplayed after reboot, and after shutdown, when I haven't plugged off from AC. I replaced the keyboard yet, same failure... If I powered off, and plugged off from AC, no keyboard problems displayed in boot time. Live CDs I've been tried with 10.04 and 10.10, but the problem is displayed too. With 9.10 no strange things displayed, but it froze, during a simple apt-get install.     Hi all I have previous experience with Matlab, but the problem that I face some problems in apply a problem in (DSP : Digital signal processing) which is not my study field, but I must finish that problems in days to complete my project. all i want is help me with method and steps of solving this problem in matlab and then I can write the code with myself. the problem is about the signal x(t) = exp(-a*t); 1) what's the Discrete Fourier transform of the sampled signal with sample rate fs 2) if a=1 and fs =1 , plot the amplitude spectrum of sampled signal 3) fix the sampling frequency at fs = 1(hz) [what's it mean ?] and plot the magnitude of the Fourier Transform of the sampled signal at various values of a thanks
