  This question already has an answer here: Which Ecommerce Script Should I Use? 1 answer I'm searching for a webshop which provides the following: The shop offers digital goods (like mp3) User can buy a voucher / gift card @Reseller (Or there is a code provided in the CD) User can enter his code @ webshop and gets the download (unregistered) User can enter his code @ webshop and download is added to his/her library (registered) optional: Resellers can buy codes from the Webshop I already tried prestashop as it looks quite nice. But it needs a lot of custom programming (and has a very strange voucher-system). Customer has to add the File into the basket and add the voucher at checkout. I want to skip that ;) Is there a Webshop (Or CMS + Plugin) which provides the things I need?   There is a school of thought in linguistics that problem solving is very much tied to the syntax, semantics, grammar, and flexibility of one's own native spoken language. Working with various international development teams, I can clearly see a mental culture (if you will) in the codebase. Programming language aside, the German coding is quite different from my colleagues in India. As well, code is distinctly different in Middle America as it is in Coastal America (actually, IBM noticed this years ago). Do you notice with your international colleagues (from ANY country) that coding style and problem solving are in-line with native tongues?

• How to explain OOP to a matlab programmer?

  I have a lot of friends who come from electrical / physical / mechanical engineering background, and are curious about what is "OOP" all about. They all know Matlab quite well, so they do have basic programming background; but they have a very hard time grasping a complex type system which can benefit from the concepts OOP introduces. Can anyone propose a way I can try to explain it to them? I'm just not familiar with Matlab myself, so I'm having troubles finding parallels. I think using simple examples like shapes or animals is a bit too abstract for those engineers. So far I've tried using a Matrix interface vs array-based / sparse / whatever implementations, but that didn't work so well, probably because different matrix types are already well-supported in Matlab.

What design would you recommend for a database that is Memory resident Must run on windows, linux and (at a stretch) the mac Accept multiple queries simultaneously Have minimum overhead, since a search is expected to take <0.25s This program implements a domain-specific search. Think of it as a database, but one that takes advantage of domain specific information to outperform a convential database search (for example, with custom oracle indexing). We have a custom data structure for our data. Our protoype is a simple exe that constructs the database in memory each time it is run. We were thinking that perhaps this program would suffice, but augmented with sockets so it can listen for queries. This database will be static. Its contents will change infrequently. We expect queries, and the solution, to be delivered via a web service.

• Why write clean, refactored code?

  Hi programming lovers, This is a question I've been asking myself for a long time. Thought of throwing out it to you. From my experience of working on several Java based projects, I've seen tons of codes which we call 'dirty'. The unconventional class/method/field naming, wrong way of handling of exceptions, unnecessarily heavy loops and recursion etc. But the code gives the intended results. Though I hate to see dirty code, it's time taking to clean them up and eventually comes the question of "is it worth? it's giving the desired results so what's the point of cleaning?" In team projects, should there be someone specifically to refactor and check for clean code? Or are there situations where the 'dirty' codes fail to give intended results or make the customers unhappy? Do feel free to comment and reply. And tell me if I'm missing something here. Thanks.

  Next Friday I'm giving a short (30 min.) talk to a bunch of software engineering students who will be attending the same university I did. Some context: The place is Montevideo, Uruguay The university is Universidad de la República (public, free university) The Software Engineering programme takes 5 years (if you're very good and don't start working early). Around 800 new students per year, around 80 graduates per year. Conditions are harsh, particularly the first two years. Most of them probably have no idea what software engineering or programming is. My goal would be to somehow give them an idea of the field and hopefully motivate them to endure the hardships ahead to eventually become successful developers. So the question is: what would you tell these people?

• Where is the "pysdm" package?

  I am new to Ubuntu. I have some old hardware lying around so I decided to build a backup/storage device. I am trying to follow this lifehacker article. It asks me to open a terminal and run sudo apt-get install pysdm. However, I keep getting Unable to locate package pysdm. Does anyone know where my pysdm is or where I can get one. I have run ubuntu from a usb key and have installed it on a hard drive and get the same message.

• Didn't do too well on a Java IKM test, advice?

  I did an IKM Java test recently and got quite a low score. I only graduated a year ago and I dont have commercial experience in Java (i do web development in my current job). I thought reading up a lot on Java would help me prepare, but when I sat the IKM test i got ripped to pieces. I didn't know much about how the garbage collection actually works, names of other java compilers (i know about javac?), using .dll with Java etc etc. I know a wide range of the basics, but to the extent wether 'int(5L)' produces an integer or not, I really didnt know. My question is that many of the IKM questions I have never come across, yet I have read many of the wider-known Java programming books (Deitel, O'Reilly etc). Am i reading the wrong books??? Could anyone recommend a good plan of action to allow me to go away and self-study and be able to know these really tough java questions?

• Atheros Wireless card shows up as two different models?

  Hi I've been fighting these wireless drivers for a few days and just recently i noticed that the model the Wireless controller appears in lspci is different sometimes. This is the data i have after installing Ubuntu Server 64 bit ~# lspci -k .... 04:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. • Software developer needs Validation for VA Chap 31 to purchase Macbook Pro vs. PC [closed]

  I am currently attending college with a path of software development and working towards my BS thanks to VA Chap 31. My old original Macbook Pro is near dead and no longer upgradable on the software or hardware side. The VA has offered to purchase a PC laptop for me (Because my syllabi says computer required), but I do not want to go backwards. I have a lot invested in OS X software and Mac peripherals, not to mention I prefer to program in an Apple environment. PC vs. Mac costs are so drastically different that I must validate my request for a new Macbook Pro. In my request to the VA, I stated the above and some other topics but they requested more validation. • Serverside memory efficiency and threading for a turn based game

  Im programming on a turn based war-game for some years now (along with the engine) and Im having quite a hard time at figuring out what the games server architecture should look like, since most game server architecture articles I found focus either on FPS oder MMOGs, which doesn't really fit since I want many matches with 1- 16 players on my server, with each match being played in turn based mode. My chief concern is memory usage, since the most basic approach of loading every game that is being played completely into RAM should be quite inefficient, so is there a suitable strategy for selecting only the needed bits and loading them? Another question I got is how to design the threading on the server, since I think using only a single thread could be a problem due to the fact that the game or part of it might have to be loaded from the database. I would be very happy if you could share your knowledge or point me to material on this topic.

• Distance between two 3D objects' faces

  I'm really newbie on programming and I'm making some tests. I couldn't find nowhere on Internet how could I calculate the distance between two 3D objects' faces. Is there anyway? Detailing, as an example, I have two 3D cubes. Each one has a vector3 position designating it's center on the 3D space and an orientation matrix. And each cube has a size (float width, float height and float length). I could get a simple distance between them by calling Vector3.Distance(), but it doesn't consider its sizes, just the position. Then the distance would be between its centers. Is there any way to calculate the distance between the faces? Thanks for any reply.

  I have come to use LINQ in my every day programming a lot. In fact, I rarely, if ever, use an explicit loop. I have, however, found that I don't use the SQL like syntax anymore. I just use the extension functions. So rather then saying: from x in y select datatransform where filter I use: x.Where(c => filter).Select(c => datatransform) Which style of LINQ do you prefer and what are others on your team are comfortable with?

• combo microphone does not work on Natty.

  I have a Internal Audio Hardware card and my Laptop (Lenevo IdeaPad) presents a single slot as a combo Microphone and headphone jack. On Windows, I attach my ipod headphone to jack and speak directly to my computer. I assume there is a microphone which is listening to my voice and I can communicate two-way. On Ubuntu, the microphone always seem to be listening to random noise. So any input by speaking to the computer is not possible. What could be the reason and how do I troubleshoot this?

• Is Java easy decompilation a factor worth considering

  We are considering the programming language for a desktop application with extended GUI use (tables, windows) and heavy database use. We considered Java for use however the fact that it can be decompiled back very easily into source code is holding us back. There are of course many obfuscators available however they are just that: obfuscators. The only obfuscation worth doing we got was stripping function and variables names into meaningless letters and numbers so that at least stealing code and renaming it back into something meaningful is too much work and we are 100% sure it is not reversible back in any automated way. However as it concerns to protecting internals (like password hashes or sensible variables content) we found obfuscators really lacking. Is there any way to make Java applications as hard to decode as .exe counterparts? And is it a factor to consider when deciding whether to develop in Java a desktop application?

• Understanding the Java Ecosystem

  I have traditionally had the "luxury" of being a one-man development team. I've used Python extensively, have a reasonable command of Perl, PHP, and JavaScript. My problem is Java. I can write Java code. I'm not great at it--unlike Python, I rarely make use of anything unique to Java when I'm writing it. Furthermore, my experience is mostly in simple GUI/console programming. Unfortunately, I'm currently pursuing an IT degree where Java is the lingua franca. My database class is requiring that our projects be written in Java using servlets, and I just can't wrap my head around the ecosystem. Is there a good online overview of or tutorial on how the Java web ecosystem works? I have Thinking in Java, but it's mostly just the language itself (which I understand well enough to get by). I have looked at the Sun servlet tutorial, but it seems outdated.

The contracts are proving to be easy to grasp and the modules are easily managed. Although MEF has a very practical use, I am wondering to what extent? I mean, is everyone going to be rewriting existing applications for extensibility? Yes, that sounds, and is insanely impractical. • front usb wont mount harddrives, internal usb ports do

  I have noticed something in my new build, i am using Ubuntu desktop newest version my motherboard is the asus f1a75-m pro R2.0 with the usb ports in the back all my NTFS hard disks or usb sticks work fine, but then.. when i put them in the front usb ports of my chassis (silverstone milo ml-03) they wont mount... I have 2 usb 3.0 ports in front of the case connected with a internal usb 3.0 header. But i verified that the usb 3.0 ports on the back do mount the harddisk so it has nothing to do with usb 3.0 i think. The strange thing is, my mouse works fine on the front usb ports. Every usb hardware piece seems to work except if it has any memory inside it :( What seems to be the problem?

• Sound is not working correctly on Ubuntu 12.04

  I know this is my own fault. But what i did was this first i wrote this command 'sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio' and then i wrote again 'sudo apt-get install pulseaudio' and now the sound doesn't work properly And the Indicator doesn't work either, it's just grayed out. The shortcuts are not working either.
