• How to study for MCTS 70-433 exam (SQL Server 2008 Database Development) and is it worth it?

- by Mugen
Hi, I'm working as a QA (Software Tester with 3 years of experience) and was thinking of getting some certifications for my career. I already have the ISTQB certification and was thinking of doing SCJP along with MCTS 70-433 certification (SQL Server 2008 Database Development) as the next move. So my question is this: 1) Who should go for the 70-433 certification and is it worth going for, for a career in QA? 2) What would be a good book to study for this? I'm just looking for a simple book that is written just to the point and not much bloated up such as technical bibles. Not that they aren't good but they just take up too much of time. Maybe something similar to the one written by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates for SCJP. It is written in a very simple language and is enough to do SCJP. Edit: I'm still searching for answers to this. Thanks.

• Generate XSD from 2005 SQL Server Database

- by Robert Finlayson
What is the easiest method to generate an XSD schema from a 2005 SQL Server Database? Would it be possible to generate one XSD schema for the entire Database (~100 tables)? I searched online and found a SQL example that generates one XSD for the one table: DECLARE @schema xml SET @schema = (SELECT * FROM MyTableName FOR XML AUTO, ELEMENTS, XMLSCHEMA('MyTableNameSchema')) SELECT @schema Outside of SQL Server, is there a third party tool that could generate the XSD file from the 2005 Database?

• LINQ to SQL Converter

- by user609511
How can I convert My LINQ to SQL ? i have this LINQ statement: int LimCol = Convert.ToInt32(LimitColis); result = oListTUP .GroupBy(x => new { x.Item1, x.Item2, x.Item3, x.Item4, x.Item5 }) .Select(g => new { Key = g.Key, Sum = g.Sum(x => x.Item6), Poids = g.Sum(x => x.Item7), }) .Select(p => new { Key = p.Key, Items = Enumerable.Repeat(LimCol, p.Sum / LimCol).Concat(Enumerable.Repeat(p.Sum % LimCol, p.Sum % LimCol > 0 ? 1 : 0)), CalculPoids = p.Poids / Enumerable.Repeat(LimCol, p.Sum / LimCol).Concat(Enumerable.Repeat(p.Sum % LimCol, p.Sum % LimCol > 0 ? 1 : 0)).Count() }) .SelectMany(p => p.Items.Select(i => Tuple.Create(p.Key.Item1, p.Key.Item2, p.Key.Item3, p.Key.Item4, p.Key.Item5, i, p.CalculPoids))) .ToList(); } It works well, but somehow want to push it and it become too complicated, so I want to convert it into Pure SQL. I have tried SQL Profiler and LinqPad, but neither shows me the SQL. How can I see the SQL code from My LINQ ? Thank you in advance.

• PHP sql with foreach loop variable problem

- by anthony
This is really getting frustrating. I have a text file that I'm reading for a list of part numbers that goes into an array. I'm using the following foreach function to search a database for matching numbers. $file = file('parts_array.txt'); foreach ($file as $newPart) { $sql = "SELECT products_sku FROM products WHERE products_sku='" . $newPart . "'"; $rs = mysql_query($sql); $num_rows = mysql_num_rows($rs); echo $num_rows; echo "
"; } The problem is I'm getting 0 rows returned from mysql_num_rows. I can type the sql statement without the variable and it works perfectly. I can even echo out the sql statement from this script, copy and paste the statement from the browser and it works. But, for some reason I'm not getting any records when I'm using the variable. I've used variables in sql statements tons of times, but this really has me stumped.

• Load only some columns with Hibernate native SQL queries

- by Alessandro Dionisi
I have a table on the database and I want to load only some columns from the result set. I defined a native sql query in the hbm file: <sql-query name="query"> <return alias="r" class="RawData"/> SELECT DESCRIPTION as {r.description} FROM RAWD_RAWDATAS r WHERE r.RAWDATA_ID=? </sql-query> This query however fails with error: could not read column value from result set: RAWDATA1_14_0_; Invalid column name SQL Error: 17006, SQLState: null, because Hibernate tries to load all fields from the result set. I found also a bug in Hibernate JIRA (http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/HHH-3035). Anyone knows how to accomplish this task with a workaround?

• No database connection when trying to use IIS locally with asp.net MVC 1.0

- by mark4asp
Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. When I try to use IIS locally instead of Cassini I get this error. The ASP.NET MVC 1.0 site is running on WinXP. The database is local and has SQL Server and Windows Authentification mode enabled. The website runs OK using Cassini, with the same connection string. It fails when I try to use IIS instead of Cassini. These permissions are set on the Virtual directory which IIS points to. ASP.NET Machine Account [Full Control] Internet Guest Account [Full Control] System [Full Control] This virtual directory is the same are the directory holding my project files. I am using Linq and the database connection string is stored in the App.config file of my data project. I get the same error whether I set the connection string to use Windows or Sql server authentification. My sql server has both [MyMachineName\ASPNET] and SqlServerUser Logins and a User on the database. CREATE LOGIN [MyMachineName\ASPNET] FROM WINDOWS WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE=[master], DEFAULT_LANGUAGE=[us_english] Use My_database CREATE USER [MyMachineName\ASPNET] FOR LOGIN [MyMachineName\ASPNET] WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA=[dbo] CREATE LOGIN [MwMvcLg] WITH PASSWORD=N'blahblah', DEFAULT_DATABASE=[master], DEFAULT_LANGUAGE=[British], CHECK_EXPIRATION=OFF, CHECK_POLICY=ON Use My_database CREATE USER [MwMvcLg] FOR LOGIN [MwMvcLg] WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA=[dbo] How come I have no problem running this website on IIS6 remotely. Why does IIS5.1, running locally, need these extra logins? PS: My overwhelming preference is to use Sql Server authentification - as this is how it runs when deployed.

• How to refresh database data only in SQL Server

- by MaxGeek
So I want to copy just the data from a Prod database (SQL 2005) down to my local machine (SQL 2005 & SQL 2008 Management Studio installed). The problem is I'm running into foreign key constraints that are causing the task/scripts to fail. I can get by these errors if I import certain tables first, but is there an easier way to do this all at once? I'm not a DBA so I don't have access to the database back up. I've tried the SQL Import/Export data Wizard and Publishing Wizard, but it also gets the PK error.

• Create DB in Sql Server based on Visio Data Model

- by Yaakov Ellis
I have created a database model in Visio Professional (2003). I know that the Enterprise version has the ability to create a DB in Sql Server based on the data in Visio. I do not have the option to install Enterprise. Aside from going through the entire thing one table and relationship at a time and creating the whole database from scratch, by hand, can anyone recommend any tool/utility/method for converting the visio database model into a Sql Script that can be used to create a new DB in Sql Server?

• Detect non-closed connections to SQL

- by JoeJoe
I've inherited a very large project in ASP.net, SQL 2005 and have found where some SQL connections are not closed - which is bad. Without going thru every line of code, is there a way to detect if connections are not being closed? Performance counter? as a follow up - how does SQL reclaim unclosed connections. I'm using non-pooled connectionstring.

• SQL CONNECTION best Practices

- by george9170
Currently there is discussion as to what are the pros and cons of having a single sql connection architecture. To elaborate what we are discussing is, at application creation open a sql connection and at application close or error closing the sql connection. And not creating another connection at all, but using just that one to talk with the DB. We are wondering what the community thinks.

• Rails SQL injection?

- by yuval
In Rails, when I want to find by a user given value and avoid SQL injection (escape apostrophes and the like) I can do something like this: Post.all(:conditions => ['title = ?', params[:title]]) I know that an unsafe way of doing this (possible SQL injection) is this: Post.all(:conditions => "title = #{params[:title]}") My question is, does the following method prevent SQL injection or not? Post.all(:conditions => {:title => params[:title]})
