  • How to adjust the distribution of values in a random data stream?

    - by BCS
Given a infinite stream of random 0's and 1's that is from a biased (e.g. 1's are more common than 0's by a know factor) but otherwise ideal random number generator, I want to convert it into a (shorter) infinite stream that is just as ideal but also unbiased. Looking up the definition of entropy finds this graph showing how many bits of output I should, in theory, be able to get from each bit of input. The question: Is there any practical way to actually implement a converter that is nearly ideally efficient?

  • [MSVC++ 2008] Using preprocessor directives to define command line options

    - by Gbps
If I wanted to add, let's say, a new .lib to the build only if a particular #define was set, how would I do that? In the MSVC++ 2008 "Property Pages", you would simply add: Config Properties -> Linker -> Input -> Additional Dependencies, but I would like it if something like #define COMPILE_WITH_DETOURS was set, then the particular library would be added to the dependencies, otherwise it would be removed. Thanks!

  • How to build form completion/document merge application with Winforms or WPF?

    - by Mike
I need to build an application that accepts user input data (such as name, address, amount, etc.) and then merges it with a pre-loaded document template (order form) and then prints this merged document. I can use Windows Forms or WPF for this project. Any suggestions on how best to approach this? I'm experienced with Winforms development, but don't have any idea how to handle merging the data to the document for printing.

  • Difference in declaring IDisposable member in using block or at using block declaration?

    - by dotnetdev
Hi, I have the code below: using (SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand()) { command.CommandType = System.Data.CommandType.StoredProcedure; command.Connection = new SqlConnection(); command.CommandText = ""; command.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@ExperienceLevel", 3).Direction = System.Data.ParameterDirection.Input); SqlDataReader dataReader = command.ExecuteReader(); } Is there any functional impact in declaring the SqlConnection where I currently am declaring it as opposed to like so?: using (SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand()) using (SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection()) Thanks

  • C++ application as a service with high performance

    - by sand
I need to provide a C++ application as a service. Client of the service and the service can be on the same machine or distributed on different machines based on the load. This application takes a ~2KB string as input and returns almost similar size of string after some processing. Turnaround time for the client should be really quick. What is the best mechanism to implement this?

  • What's the simplest and most robust way to have constant-height submit button with rounded corners?

    - by taw
Constant height so just left/right images should be necessary instead of having 4+, right? I'd still want top-to-bottom color gradient (and different one on hover). If possible, I'd prefer if it was still an <input type='submit'> and not anything weird. Is there any way (website / imagemagick script etc.) to generate these images automatically or do I need to draw them in some graphics program?

  • How to style forms in the Zend framework?

    - by user505988
Hi, I really like the idea of putting forms into a seperate class that manages validation etc, but I don't like everything ending up in a DL and also not being able to use square bracket notation in post elements like <input type='checkbox' name='data[]'>. Is there another way of generating forms - like in views so I can style them the way I want, but also keeping the validation aspect? Also how would I load this view into my current view (using partial view somehow?)

But I have one issue now that if I tap on a textbox for selecting different values then the default mobile textbox popup window come up which I want to prevent. I tried Readonly="true" but that will simply disable the function and not able to select any values from that. So I want to prevent this input window when I click on a textbox.

  • Neural Network 0 vs -1

    - by Louis
I have seen a few times people using -1 as opposed to 0 when working with neural networks for the input data. How is this better and does it effect any of the mathematics to implement it? Edit: Using feedforward and back prop Edit 2: I gave it a go but the network stopped learning so I assume the maths would have to change somewhere?

  • Java: Using Dynamically loaded classes

    - by Snigger
Hi I'm new to java. I'm trying to use some dynamically loaded classes in my application. The application doesn't know classes , Just it try to load a class by name that its name came from input. It doesn't know class (So I can't use casting) but just needs to call some methods of that class (every class should have that methods). I thought about interfaces but I don't know how. How can I call those methods? Thanks

  • Am I supposed to store hashes for passwords?

    - by Doug
User System and Passwords: I was looking through MD5 stuff, and I am wondering what is the normal/good practice for passwords. Right now, I think people super encrypt the passwords and store the hashes. If so, how does password checking work? I just have the input password go through the encryption process again and then check the hash with the stored one, correct? This question may contradict the above, but should my salt ever be a randomly generated value?

  • Why use <g:textField /> in Grails?

    - by knorv
What is the reason to use g:textField in Grails if you're already familiar with standard HTML form tags? If I understand correctly the following two markup alternatives are equivalent: <input type="text" name="name" value="${params.name}" id="name" /> <g:textField name="name" value="${params.name}" /> Are there any circumstances under which using g:textField would add value? Am I missing something?

  • How to check if a checkbox/ radio button is checked in php

    - by user225269
    I have this html code: <tr> <td><label><input type="text" name="id" class="DEPENDS ON info BEING student" id="example">ID</label></td> </tr> <tr> <td> <label> <input type="checkbox" name="yr" class="DEPENDS ON info BEING student"> Year</label> </td> </tr> But I don't have any idea on how do I check this checkboxes if they are checked using php, and then output the corresponding data based on the values that are checked. Please help, I'm thinking of something like this. But of course it won't work, because I don't know how to equate checkboxes in php if they are checked: <?php $con = mysql_connect("localhost","root","nitoryolai123$%^"); if (!$con) { die('Could not connect: ' . mysql_error()); } mysql_select_db("school", $con); $id = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['idnum']); if($_POST['id'] == checked & $_POST['yr'] ==checked ){ $result2 = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM student WHERE IDNO='$id'"); echo "<table border='1'> <tr> <th>IDNO</th> <th>YEAR</th> </tr>"; while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result2)) { echo "<tr>"; echo "<td>" . $row['IDNO'] . "</td>"; echo "<td>" . $row['YEAR'] . "</td>"; echo "</tr>"; } echo "</table>"; } mysql_close($con); ?>
