  • BCS with Visual Studio 2010

    - by Sahil Malik
Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). BCS or Business Connectivity services is a new and much improved, and much much enhanced version of what used to be BDC in SharePoint 2007. It allows external data to be surfaced inside of SharePoint. But compared to BDC, it comes with much richer a) Presentation options – in both server and client. b) Tooling support – In SharePoint designer and Visual Studio c) Connectivity options – in conjunction with the secure store service. In my newest article on BCS, I talk about BCS in SharePoint 2010 with Visual Studio 2010. Hope you like it. There is also a whole chapter (Chapter #9) devoted to BCS in my book. • Implementing Security on custom BCS/.net class?

    - by Michael Stum
I'm implementing a custom BCS Model to get data from a backend system. As the backend uses it's own user management, I'm accessing it through a service account. All of this works well and allows me to pull data into SharePoint. However because it's channeled through the service account, everyone can access it, which is bad. Can anyone give me some tips which method to implement? The backend does not give me NT ACLs, but I wonder if I could just "fake" them somehow? (Essentially saying "This NT Group has Read Access" is good enough). I am aware of ISecurityTrimmer2 for Search Results, but ideally I want to cover security inside the BCS Model so that it applies to external lists as well. I want to avoid using Secure storage and mapping each individual user to the backend.

  • Telerik Silverlight Grid with BCS Lists in SharePoint 2010

    - by Sahil Malik
Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Okay my next video is online. In this video, I demonstrate the usage of the Telerik Silverlight grid working with a Business Connectivity Services (BCS) list over the Client Object Model. I use the Telerik grid to create a view on a BCS list, and demonstrate the rich value that a nice Silverlight grid can bring into SharePoint 2010. The entire presentation is mostly all code. It’s about 1/2 hr in length. Watch the video Comment on the article ....

  • SharePoint Business Connectivity Services (BCS) Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'

    - by g18c
I am running SharePoint 2010 with SQL 2012, I am trying to get Business Connectivity Services (BCS) running but I am facing a double-hope authentication issue. Everytime I try to connect to the external BCS list created in SharePoint designer, I get the error Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. In the event viewer on the SQL server I see a login failure for an anonymous user from the SP server IP address. Background information below: I have enabled Kerberos under SharePoint Central admin. I have the following AD domain accounts: SP_Farm - main website pool SP_Services - for SharePoint services (including BCS) SQL_Engine - SQL database engine I then created the following with SetSPN: SetSPN -S http/intranet mydomain\SP_Farm SetSPN -S http/intranet.mydomain.local mydomain\SP_Farm SetSPN -S SPSvc/SPS mydomain\SP_Farm SetSPN -S MSSQLSvc/SQL1 mydomain\SQL_DatabaseEngine SetSPN -S MSSQLSvc/SQL1.mydomain.local mydomain\SQL_DatabaseEngine SetSPN -S MSSQLSvc/SQL1:1433 mydomain\SQL_DatabaseEngine SetSPN -S MSSQLSvc/SQL1.mydomain.local:1433 mydomain\SQL_DatabaseEngine I then delegated the AD accounts for any authentication protocol to the following: SP_Farm - SP_Farm (http service type, intranet) SP_Farm - SQL_DatabaseEngine (MSSQLSvc, sql1) SP_Service - SP_Service (SPSvc) SP_Service - SQL_DatabaseEngine (MSSQLSvc, sql1) I have also checked the WFE is being logged on to with Kerberos, with the WFE server event log showing event ID 4624 with Kerberos authentication, this is OK. The SQL is also showing connections authenticated as Kerberos from the WFE with the following query: Select s.session_id, s.login_name, s.host_name, c.auth_scheme from sys.dm_exec_connections c inner join sys.dm_exec_sessions s on c.session_id = s.session_id Despite the above, credentials are not passed from the client through the SharePoint server to the SQL server, only the anonymous account is used. I get the following error in the WFE server for 'BusinessData' ID 8080: Could not open connection using 'data source=sql1.mydomain.local;initial catalog=MSCRM;integrated security=SSPI;pooling=true;persist security info=false' in App Domain '/LM/W3SVC/1848937658/ROOT-1-129922939694071446'. The full exception text is: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. If I set a username and password with the Secure Store Service and set the external list to use the impersonated credentials, the list works. Any ideas what I have missed and what can be tried next?

  • Is going for a BCS the right move for me?

    - by Michel Carroll
I'm at a fork in the road. I need somebody to give me some advice from their personal journey in IT. At the moment, I have a college diploma (2 years) in Computer Programmer, and about 2 years of professional experience in the field of software. I'm currently freelancing my programming skills to the public, and am enjoying a nice income, and the rewards of flexibly working on a variety of projects with different cool people. I'm young (21 years old), passionate about software, technology, the internet, and also business. I know if I ever want to dwell deeper into the software industry, I might have a hard time doing so without a Bachelors in Computer Science. On one side, I think I'm better off getting my BCS while I'm still young and malleable. Also, the thought of learning even more stuff in my field is really exciting to me. On the flip side, it means another 3-4 years of studying, and jeopardizing my chances of going on vacation and accumulating wealth for a long time. Considering that I'm already pretty successful with my college diploma, do you think it's a good idea for me to go get my BCS? Will it open up many more doors in the future?

  • Merge and match oracle

    - by Dante
I really need some help with my query. I am trying to merge two tables together, but I only want the data were Cast_Date and Sched_Cast_Date are the same. I try to run the query but I get the error missing keyword in the line 21 column 13. I am sure that this is not the only potential error that I have. Could someone help me to get this query up and running? • Speaking at SPTechCon Boston 2012

    - by Brian Jackett
I will be speaking at SPTechCon Boston 2012.  This will be my 3rd time speaking at SPTechCon and 4th time attending.  The conference has steadily been growing over the past few years and is one of the biggest non-Microsoft run conferences for SharePoint in the US.  I’ll be presenting two topics which I have given before but this time around with some updated content.  Registration is currently open and you can save $200 (on top of the current early bird discount of $400) by using the code "JACKETT” during registration.  I highly recommend joining for valuable learning and networking.   Where: SPTechCon Boston 2012 Title: PowerShell for the SharePoint 2010 Developer Audience and Level: Developer, Intermediate Abstract: PowerShell is not just for SharePoint 2010 administrators. Developers also get access to a wide range of functionality with PowerShell. In this session we will dive into using PowerShell with the .Net framework, web services, and native SharePoint commandlets. We will also cover some of the more intermediate to advanced techniques available within PowerShell that will improve your work efficiency. Not only will you learn how to automate your work but also learn ways to prototype solutions faster. This session is targeted to developers and assumes a basic familiarity with PowerShell. Slides and Code download: coming soon   Title: Integrating Line-of-Business Applications with SharePoint 2010 Audience and Level: Developer, Intermediate Abstract: One of the biggest value-adding enhancements in SharePoint 2010 is the Business Connectivity Services (BCS). In this session, we will overview the BCS, demonstrate connecting line-of-business applications and external systems to SharePoint through external content types, and walk through surfacing that data with external lists. This session is targeted at developers. No prior experience with the BCS is required, but a basic understanding of SharePoint Designer 2010 and SharePoint solutions is suggested. • Run a command as cron would but from the command line.

    - by BCS
I have a script that I'm trying to run from cron. When I run it from bash, it work just fine. However when I let cron do it's thing, I get a: myscript.sh: line 122: syntax error: unexpected end of file What I want is a way to run a command as if it was a cron job, but do it in my shell. As a side note: does anyone know what would be differnt under cron? (the script already has a #!/bin/sh line) To answer my own question: I added this to my crontab: * * * * * bcs for ((i=1; i <= 55; i++)) ; do find ~/.crontemp/ -name '*.run' -exec "{}" ";" ; sleep 1; done` and created this script: #!/bin/sh tmp=$(mktemp ~/.crontemp/cron.XXXXX) mknod $tmp.pipe p mv $tmp $tmp.pre echo $* '>' $tmp.pipe '1>&2' >> $tmp.pre echo rm $tmp.run >> $tmp.pre chmod 700 $tmp.pre mv $tmp.pre $tmp.run cat $tmp.pipe rm $tmp.pipe With that, I can run an arbitrary command with a delay of not more than one second. (And yes, I know there are all kinds of security issue involved in that)

  • Is there a way to create a copy-on-write copy of a directory?

    - by BCS
I'm thinking of a situation where I would have something that creates a copy of a directory, tweaks a few files, and then does some processing on the result. This wold be done fairly often, maybe a few dozen times a day. (The exact use case is testing patch submissions; dupe the code, patch it, build/test/report/etc.) What I'm looking for could be done by creating a new directory structure and populating it with hard links from the origonal. However this only works if all the tools you use delete and recreate files rather than edit them in place. Is there a way to have the file system do copy-on-write for a file? Note: I'm aware that many FSs use COW at a block level (all updates are done via writes to new blocks) but this is not what I want.

  • Where can I find a tutorial for PCB?

    - by BCS
I'm looking at using this PCB layout program and looking for a tutorial for it. After skimming through the manual, and a few attempts at guessing how to use it, I have to say that in combination they are a near ideal example of how Not to make a UI easy to use. The GUI seems to borrow it's key combinations from vi (despite not being a text editor) and the manual seems to say more about what things do than how to do things. The closest I can find is this section that starts with the todo note: [...] do a real-world tutorial example.

  • Network connection through a wall

    - by BCS
I have a place where I want to set up a network connection through a normal residential wall where I can't cut any holes. I don't want to just set up a wireless system. Does anyone make a device that you place on either side of a wall to hook up a connection? Preferably something that can do 100Mb full duplex and can't be eavesdropped on with common hardware? The situation is that I'm moving into a new place (that I'm renting, so I can't do any cutting) and the POP is in one room and I have all the equipment is in another room.

  • How to lie to Win98 about USB drivers?

    - by BCS
I have a new printer and a old (Windows 98) system (that can't be upgraded). I've been told that some of the drivers for older printers of the same make are very likely to work just fine for it if I can talk windows into using them. Is there a way to edit the map of device IDs (VID/PID?) to USB drivers? The specific kind of tool I'm looking for should work for any kind of USB drivers, not just printers. OTOH if someone knows of a technique that work for some kinds of printers, that could be of (general) interest.

  • Looking for a VPN server that fits my needs

    - by BCS
This question (and some more research) has revealed that OpenVPN isn't for me. So, what are my other options? In particular things I need/want (most important first) are: A server daemon that runs on Linux without kernel modules Clients work from behind NATs and Firewalls. Free/FOSS Support for PPTP, L2TP or L2TP/IPSec PSK/CRT A architecture that makes all accesses equal: if the server is to have access to the VPN, then it must be a client. Just like everyone else. Minimal configuration/state. The first 3 are must haves and the last is a nice to have. The rest I could live without, but then again I could also live with nothing.

  • Is a low voltage licence needed to install network cable?

    - by BCS
In some places in the US you need a "low voltage licence" to install "low voltage wiring" but I can't seem to find anything that says if this includes network wiring. (I know this will differ from place to place so please state where you are referring to.) Does the law say you need a licence? Does anyone pay attention to it? Are their any exception you known of? How sure are you of your information? Got any links? "Me specific" parts of the question. p.s. I'm looking for info on Idaho, USA but answerers for anywhere welcome. edit: I have some formal training in this and am completely confident that I can do it safely and correctly. However the training was pre-2008 befor Idaho switched to the national building code.
