  • Scaling range of values with negative numbers

    How can I scale a set of values to fit a new range if they include negative numbers? For example, I have a set of numbers (-10, -9, 1, 4, 10) which have to scaled to a range [0 1], such that -10 maps to 0, and 10 maps to 1. The regular method for an arbitrary number 'x' would be: (x - from_min) * (to_max - to_min) / (from_max - from_min) + to_min but this does not work for negative numbers. Any help is appreciated.   • Can a real number "cover" all integers within its range?

    Is there a guarantee that a real number (float, double, etc) can "cover" all integers within its range? By cover I mean, that for every integer within its range there is such real number that this equality holds: real == int Or in another example, let's say I have the biggest real number which is smaller than given integer. When I add "epsilon" will I get this number equal to given integer or bigger than integer? (I know that among real numbers you should not write comparisons as == for equality, I am simply asking for better understanding subject, not for coding comparisons.)

  • Android: Find coordinates of a certain point X meters from my location moving towards the point I am

    Hi Guys, I'm constructing a geolocation based application and I'm trying to figure out a way to make my application realise when a user is facing the direction of the given location (a particular long / lat co-ord). I've done some Googling and checked the SDK but can't really find anything for such a thing. Does anyone know of a way? Example. Point A = Phones current location. Point B = A's orientation in relation to true north + 45 + max distance towards the direction your facing, Point C = A's orientation in relation to true north - 45 + max distance towards the direction your facing. So now you have a triangle constructed. pretty schweet huh? yeah.. I think so.. So now that I have my fancy Triangle I use something called Barycentric Coordinates ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barycentric_coordinates_(mathematics) ). This will allow me to test another point and see if it is in the triangle. If it is, it means we're facing it AND it's within the right distance. So it should be displayed on screen. If I'm facing 90 degrees from true north. The distance it travels should be that direction. 90 degrees from true north. It should not be 100 degrees or something from true north! But the problem is I haven't yet figured out how I make the device realise it must go "out" the direction it is facing.

    I have to calculate an average value of my simulation. The simulation is ongoing and I want (for each iteration) to print the current average value. How do I do that? I tried the code below (in the loop), but I do not think that the right value is calculated... int average = 0; int newValue; // Continuously updated value. if(average == 0) { average = newValue; } average = (average + newValue)/2; I also taught about store each newValue in an array and for each iteration summarize the whole array and do the calculation. However, I don't think that's a good solution, because the loop is an infinity loop so I can't really determine the size of the array. There is also a possibility that I am thinking too much and that the code above is actually correct, but I don't think so...

I am not familiar with the various matlab fuctions -- it seems like there should be one for this.     hello. I am developing functional domain specific embedded language within C++ to translate formulas into working code as concisely and accurately as possible. I post prototype in the comment, it is about 2 hundred lines long. Right now my language looks something like this (well, actually is going to look like): // implies two nested loops j=0:N, i=0,j (range(i) < j < N)[T(i,j) = (T(i,j) - T(j,i))/e(i+j)]; // implies summation over above expression sum(range(i) < j < N))[(T(i,j) - T(j,i))/e(i+j)]; I am looking for possible syntax improvements/extensions or just different ideas about expressing mathematical formulas as clearly and precisely as possible (in any language, not just C++). Can you give me some syntax examples relating to my question which can be accomplished in your language of choice which consider useful. In particular, if you have some ideas about how to translate the above code segments, I would be happy to hear them.   • Why isnt int pow(int base, int exponent) in the standard C++ libraries?

    I feel like I must just be unable to find it. Is there any reason that the c++ pow function does not implement the "power" function for anything except floats and doubles? I know the implementation is trivial, I just feel like I'm doing work that should be in a standard library. A robust power function (ie handles overflow in some consistent, explicit way) is not fun to write.

    I want to implement greatest integer function. int x = 5/3; My question is with greater numbers could there be a loss of precision as 5/3 would produce a double? EDIT: Greatest integer function is integer less than or equal to X. Example: 4.5 = 4 4 = 4 3.2 = 3 3 = 3 What I want to know is 5/3 going to produce a double? Because if so I will have loss of precision when converting to int. Hope this makes sense. RE-EDIT: What OP calls 'greatest integer' most of us call 'floor'.

  • Linear Interpolation. How to implement this algorithm in C ? (Python version is given)

    There exists one very good linear interpolation method. It performs linear interpolation requiring at most one multiply per output sample. I found its description in a third edition of Understanding DSP by Lyons. This method involves a special hold buffer. Given a number of samples to be inserted between any two input samples, it produces output points using linear interpolation. Here, I have rewritten this algorithm using Python: temp1, temp2 = 0, 0 iL = 1.0 / L for i in x: hold = [i-temp1] * L temp1 = i for j in hold: temp2 += j y.append(temp2 *iL) where x contains input samples, L is a number of points to be inserted, y will contain output samples. My question is how to implement such algorithm in ANSI C in a most effective way, e.g. is it possible to avoid the second loop? NOTE: presented Python code is just to understand how this algorithm works.   • 3D points to quaternions

    For the simplicity, we'll consider two 3D points, that moves one relatively to other, in time. Let's say: at moment t0, we have P1(0,0,0) and P2(0,2,0) at moment t1, P1 is still (0,0,0) but P2 changed to (0,2,2). From what I've understood reading about quaternions, is that, at moment t0, Q1 (representing P1) and Q2 (representing P2) will be both (0, 0, 0, 0). But at the moment t1, Q2 will become something else (w, x, y, z). How do I calculate the Q2 at t1 moment? I've googled a lot on this subject, but I was able to find only rotation between quaternions.     Dynamic integer will be any number from 0 to 150. i.e. - number returns 41, need to return 50. If number is 10 need to return 10. Number is 1 need to return 10. Was thinking I could use the ceiling function if I modify the integer as a decimal...? then use ceiling function, and put back to decimal? Only thing is would also have to know if the number is 1, 2 or 3 digits (i.e. - 7 vs 94 vs 136) Is there a better way to achieve this? Thank You,

    Lets say I am dividing 2592 / 324 = 8 Practically I must guess that 324 goes 8 times in 2592 without reminder. For example, first I try with 7 ( 7*324 = 2268, reminder 324, so 7 is wrong, so I try with 8 and 8 is correct) Is there anyway to do dividing without guessing( trying ), like multiplication ( all mechanically, digit by digit )?

  • Inter-rater agreement (Fleiss' Kappa, Krippendorff's Alpha etc) Java API?

    I am working on building a Question Classification/Answering corpus as a part of my masters thesis. I'm looking at evaluating my expected answer type taxonomy with respect to inter-rater agreement/reliability, and I was wondering: Does anybody know of any decent (preferably free) Java API(s) that can do this? I'm reasonably certain all I need is Fleiss' Kappa and Krippendorff's Alpha at this point. Weka provides a kappa statistic in it's evaluation package, but I think it can only evaluate a classifier and I'm not at that stage yet (because I'm still building the data set and classes). Thanks.
