  • Configuration Deployment to Linux Systems

    - by William
Hello, I'm looking for a nice way to add / remote ips (and possibly interact with an asset inventory system to track where ips are), start / stop processes, download logs, and all around genearal system admin duties from one place. It's okay if I require more than 1 program. That would still be better than having 50 million terminals open and trying to trace ip assignments etc on whiteboards. I'd also like to know if anyone knows any good asset management programs. Best Regards, William

  • /usr/local or /opt ?

    - by SirFabel
Hi Guys, How do you generally proceed for your package installations on Linux, for packages that are not part of your distrib's repos? On my side I am used to install in /opt. But since, I saw this doc on the Internet: http://www.pathname.com/fhs/. Now I am confused: apparently /usr/local would be also a possibility. What is the difference between both? Any best practices to share? Thanks SirFabel

  • Multiple network connections on a Windows 2008 domain controller (private network for NAS)

    - by Sysadminicus
I have a Windows 2008 server connecting to an iSCSI target on an OpenSolaris box (yay ZFS!). I'd like to create a private network between the 2 boxes that is totally separate of my Windows domain. What is the best way to configure the additional network adapter on the Windows machine so it doesn't think the new subnet is part of the Windows domain? I want to make sure Windows doesn't magically start spewing active directory communications over the private wire and that it doesn't start poisoning the DNS with IPs from the private network.

  • Why does my mail get marked as spam?

    - by schoen
I Have the server "afspraakmanager.be". It matches everything not to be a spam server.(it isn't by the way): it has reverse dns, spf,dkim,... . But hotmail marks it as spam. I think the problem is the SPF/DKIM records. when i sent an email to my gmail it says: "Received-SPF: neutral (google.com: 2a02:348:8e:6048::1 is neither permitted nor denied by best guess record for domain of [email protected]) client-ip=2a02:348:8e:6048::1; Authentication-Results: mx.google.com; spf=neutral (google.com: 2a02:348:8e:6048::1 is neither permitted nor denied by best guess record for domain of [email protected]) [email protected]; dkim=neutral (bad format) [email protected]" So i guess my SPF and DKIM records aren't set up right. But I also don't have a clue what is wrong with them. this is the zone file: ; zone file for afspraakmanager.be $ORIGIN afspraakmanager.be. $TTL 3600 @ 86400 IN SOA ns1.eurodns.com. hostmaster.eurodns.com. • How should I integrate Active Directory with Windows clients and Linux clients and servers

    - by Steve Nadie
I have Windows and Linux clients and I want to provide Active Directory authentication for both but keeping DHCP and DNS on Linux servers. Is this possible ? I have very little experience in administration and I'm kind of lost here on how I should implement this so it all works together. What is the best way to do this ? I'm free to choose linux distributions and windows server version as long as it's earlier than 2003

  • Load balancing application servers with Alteon 2424-SSL

    - by antispam
We are having problems with load balancing configuration and we would like to clear the situation. We need to load balance among four JavaEE web application servers. The servers are configured as host1 port 7001 host1 port 7002 host2 port 7001 host2 port 7002 Do any of you know if it is possible with Nortel 2424-SSL application switch? Which would be the best configuration for it? (vips, ports, groups, services, ...) Thank you very much.

  • Integrated Help - Merged Help Indexes

    - by Rob Sanders
If anyone has had more than a couple of Microsoft tools or products installed (or a local install of the MSDN library) side by side, you might have noticed that opening help (hitting F1) or opening, say, SQL Server Books Online causes the help indexes to be re-indexed - this is usually after installing a new product or tool. This can be a really, really time consuming exercise! Does anyone know a way to prevent or opt out of having combined help indexes? At best, even just preventing the reindexing at all?

  • Monitor and copy file changes on Windows Server 2003 over NFS or CIFS to *nix

    - by davenolan
Machine A, Windows Server 2003. Machine B, Ubuntu 9.04. Aim is to copy new and updated files as fast as possible from A to B. B can mount A either as CIFS or NFS (Services for Unix NFS server running on A). This is an absolutely time critical operation. What is the best way of achieving this? Note: benchmarked NFS vs CIFS and CIFS was faster and there was less variance in the speed (haven't tuned the NFS setup at all)

  • Printer monitoring script

    - by HannesFostie
I am going to write a script of some sort to check event viewer in a windows server 2003 for all printjobs, and then write them to a comma delimited textfile like printername_floor_room.txt I am wondering what the best way is to do this realtime, and keep checking the event viewer constantly. Any caveats I need to be aware of? Thanks

  • Install Python 2.6 on Debian Unix

    - by Bialecki
I want to install Python 2.6, but as it's still experimental for Debian Unix, I'm wondering what might best course of action is. Is the right idea to idea it into /usr/local for my system and then update the python sym link in /usr/bin to point to that version? Other considerations or ways to do it I should be thinking about?

  • No architecture vs architecture-specific binaries

    - by Aaron
From what I understand, the noarch suffix means that it's architecture independent and should work universally. If this is the case, why should I install architecture-specific packages at all? Why not just go straight for the noarch? Are there optimizations in the x86 or x64 binaries that aren't found in the noarch binaries? What's best for high performance applications? Folding@Home does this with their controller:

  • No power to HP pavilion dv 1000

    - by Imajica666
I am working on a friends laptop. I get no power indicator light while plugged in to ac outlet. Will not power on with just the battery. Might this be a case of replacing the system board? I have never broken open a laptop so I am not sure what the best path to take might be. Thanks for any opinions.

  • Transferring dmg files from a PC to an Apple

    - by Lee Carlton
Hi all, I have dmg files on my computer that I need to put on my friends new macbook. When I try to put the files on an external hard drive it says that they are too large to transfer (each file is about 8 gigs). Just trying to figure out the best way to do this transfer. We started doing it with an ethernet cable last night, and transferred about 8 gigs over the course of a couple of hours.

  • Semi-Hybrid Triple Channel DDR3

    - by Avihu Turzion
I have 3 x Corsair 2GB DDR3 1600MHz, and I want to expand it with 3 more DIMMs. Obviously to keep my triple-channel, I'd be best to buy an identical 3 DIMMs kit as I have now, because triple-channel doesn't work with not-identical memory DIMMs, but to what level of difference? Can I have identical spec DIMMs (Corsair DDR3 1600MHz) but just 4GB beside my 2GB ones, and the triple-channel will still be active?
