• .NET on Windows to Mono on Ubuntu

  I am looking at a possibility to change my ASP.NET 2.0 application to the Mono framework. I have used the Mono Migration Analyzer tool and it does detect some P/Invoke and interop dependencies. For example: 1) We use Excel interops and on Linux we are looking to use StarOffice/OpenOffice instead. Is there an easy way of substituting Excel with StarOffice? (I know it sounds bizarre, but I just don't want to miss out in case anyone has done it already.) 2) LDAP authentication: What could be the best alternative in Ubuntu (or an other flavour of Linux)? 3) Is there an Ajax framework for Mono? Preferably with similar controls as Atlas? I hope I am not too ambitious here..

• .NET assembly in GAC + Config

  I have a .NET 3.5 assembly, a DAL, that connects to a database through Linq2SQL. I deploy this assembly in the GAC as it can be used by multiple business layers. The question is: in a dev environment I have a connection string different than the one in the production environment. Before deploying the assembly to the prod GAC I need to recompile it with the appropriate connection string. Is there any way to allow deploying the assembly to the GAC independently of the connection string, being that info read from some config? Thx in advance

• Setting Focus with ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit

  I'm using the AutoComplete control from the ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit and I'm experiencing an issue where the AutoComplete does not populate when I set the focus to the assigned textbox. I've tried setting the focus in the Page_Load, Page_PreRender, and Page_Init events and the focus is set properly but the AutoComplete does not work. If I don't set the focus, everything works fine but I'd like to set it so the users don't have that extra click. Is there a special place I need to set the focus or something else I need to do to make this work? Thanks.

• Serializing System.Drawing.Color in .NET

  Hi all, I've used the default .NET serialization for a class with a System.Drawing.Color member. The code is now in use by people, and I need to add an extra member to the class, but still deserialize older versions. So I tried the standard way of doing this: The ISerializable interface, using SerializationInfo methods to get the int and string members. The problem: My class also has a System.Drawing.Color member, but SerializationInfo doesn't provide a "GetColor" method read this data type. I've tried getting it as an int and as a string, and casting it to System.Drawing.Color, but no luck. Does anyone know how to deserialize a System.Drawing.Color from SerializationInfo? Thanx! Alan

  I'm about to create an development enviroment for a little developer company(3-4 developers + some testers). Our development platform is .NET and Oracle. My question is how to structure the whole enviroment.How many servers do I need ? Should be one server for developers and one for testers ? I'd like to have one build server (TeamCity). Where to put the Subversion ? Visual Studio's would be on developers laptops. Do I need one database for development and one extra for build server ? What else could be helpful ??

  I've posted a code snippet on another forum asking for help and people pointed out to me that using GoTo statements is very bad programming practice. I'm wondering: why is it bad? What alternatives to GoTo are there to use in VB.NET that would be considered generally more of a better practice? Consider this snippet below where the user has to input their date of birth. • SQL Server to manage ASP.NET sessions doesn't work

  I follow the direction in here How to configure SQL Server to manage ASP.NET sessions to create ASPState db. I have 2 web application in IIS 7. In IIS web application setting, i go to "Session State" and set session state as "SQL Server" and provide connection string. In each web application web.config, i add <sessionState mode="SQLServer" allowCustomSqlDatabase="false" sqlConnectionString="data source=server;user id=user;password=password" cookieless="false" timeout="7200" /> I create a session , Session["Data"] = "test" in Web App A and go to Web App B in the same browser to print it Response.Write(Session["Data"]); It shows NOTHING. I can see there are data in table : ASPStateTempApplications and ASPStateTempSessions under ASPState Database. Also, i dont see any error in event log. Can anyone think anything i may do wrong? Thanks!!

I'm working on an ASP.NET/C# app. I have 2 text boxes and I need to validate if the input text for both of them are not both null ex: if(string.IsNullOrEmpty(TextBox1.Text) && string.IsNullOrEmpty(TextBox2.Text) ) //FAIL!!! else // OK! that is, at least one txtBox has values I was planning on using a custom validator but it seems that the validation function only gets called when something is written on the textBox i'm using has the 'control to validate'. Now, that doesn't work for me since I want to show an error message when both text boxes are empty. Is there a way to make the validation function to be called with, for example a postback? Or is there any other better approach to this case than the custom validator? tks

In other words, I need to find the object in the ArrayList with the same FileName as the one I'm searching on.   I am implementing a library where I am extensively using the .Net BitArray class and need an equivalent to the Java BitSet.Cardinality() method, i.e. a method which returns the number of bits set. I was thinking of implementing it as an extension method for the BitArray class. The trivial implementation is to iterate and count the bits set (like below), but I wanted a faster implementation as I would be performing thousands of set operations and counting the answer. • How can I detect when the .NET Framework feature is "turned off" in Windows 7 / Vista?

  My application requires the .NET Framework version 3.5. I recently ran into a customer that had the .NET Framework installed but turned off on Windows Vista (also applies to Windows 7). In this case, my installer (InstallShield 2009) does not prompt the user to install the Framework (because it is already installed) and when my application runs it crashes immediately. I tried another .NET application and it also crashes immediately. Is there any way to detect this situation and handle it more gracefully? Just detecting this during install is not ideal since the .NET Framework can be turned off at any time. Ideally, the application would be able to check and display a friendly message to the user telling them they need to turn on the .NET Framework. EDIT: "Turning off" the .NET Framework in Windows Vista or Windows 7 is not the same as uninstalling it. I want the user to click the print button and automatically the document prints.   Am I being blind, or does the .NET framework not provide any kind of ranged integer class? That is, a type that would prevent you setting a value outside some given bounds that are not the full range of the basic data type. For example, an integer type that would restrict its values to between 1 and 100. Showing my age here, but back in '93, I remember using that sort of thing in Modula-2 (eeek!), but I've not seen explicit framework / language support for it since. Am I just missing something, or is it a case of "it's so simple to make your own that the framework doesn't bother"? Cheers.

I am not allowed to use Sessions to store first three pages data. and i need to use 'BACK' button on last three pages. when i click 'BACK' button i need to maintain the previous page data entered by user. As my pages do some postbacks, i cannot use javascript.history function. My restrictions are: As the application is served from a web farm, a session object cannot be used. However, for the purpose of this excersise, consider session object as database-like persistent space where you can store your data. your code should show an easy way to switch to a different persistent space. What is databse like persistent space and how to write a code to switch to different persistent space?... Please give me some idea on how to proceed.... Thank you

  After working with the .NET GDI+ Rectangle object, I've noticed that if I create a rectangle that is X:0 * Y:0 * Width:100 * Height:100, the Right and Bottom properties are set to 100, 100. Shouldn't this be 99, 99? 0 - 99 is 100 pixels. 0 - 100 is 101 pixels. FWIW, the documentation does say the right is computed by x + width and the bottom is y + height, but is that correct? Perhaps "correct" doesn't matter here as long it's consistent? All I know is that it is somewhat (read... very) annoying!

  I've installed a vb.net windows service on a Windows 2008 machine, that is attempting to connect to SQL 2005. The service starts succesfully, but can't see the database. The event log has the following entry. The description for Event ID 0 from source SU4.ESMR.DAL.Job.FillPriorityJobByType(oJobDS, TypeID: 3 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. This was tested locally on both XP and 2008. All environments are 32 bit.
