• Links to ASP.NET application in MS Word document

  I am observing a weird behavior when clicking links to my ASP.NET application in MS Word 2003 / 2007 document. I have IE8 installed. When I click a link in the document the request that is sent has the user-agent IE7(!?). A new session object is created. Right after that out of nowhere a second request appears this time having user-agent IE8. More over, when I click anything on the requested page, a new session object is once again created, so I cannot rely on anything that has been persisted in the session. Why is it like that?

• VB.net Network Graph code/algorithm

  For a school project we need to visualise a computer network graph. The number of computers with specific properties are read from an XML file, and then a graph should be created. Ad random computers are added and removed. Is there any open source project or algorithm that could help us visualising this in VB.net? Or would you suggest us to switch to java. Update: We eventually switched java and used the Jung libraries because this was easier for us to understand and implement.

• VB.net WebBrowser and AJAX List Options

  I'm writing a VB.net program for a website that uses the AJAX Lits options http://www.ajaxdaddy.com/demo-dhtml-autocomplete.html Whats more is that the website has used additional arguments in the function that i'm not exactly sure what they are calling, and there a trigger that executes an action that must be click, tabbing and returning fail. Any idea on how to automate this? This website has been a holy terror since it was unleashed on my company.   Note: Most probably this will be a double question, but since I haven't found a clear answer, I'm asking it anyway. In ASP.NET I'd like to add some JavaScript to the onclick event of a CheckBox. I've simplified the case to this: <asp:CheckBox ID="TestCheckBox" runat="server" onclick="alert('test');" Text="Test" /> The resulting HTML is as follows: <input id="MainContainer_TestCheckBox" type="checkbox" name="ctl00$MainContainer$TestCheckBox" onclick="alert(&#39;test&#39;);" /><label for="MainContainer_TestCheckBox">Test</label> What particularly bothers me is that a single quote 'automatically' gets converted into '&#39;'. If I omit the onclick in the markup and assign it in Page_Load, the exact same results show in the HTML. protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { this.TestCheckBox.Attributes["onclick"] = "alert('test');"; } Anyone got a clue about what's happening? Or how to fix/ avoid it?

• asp.net and Visual studio root directory question

  I am seeing something very odd and thought I would ask the Stackoverflow community if they knew the answer. I have an asp.net project that runs fine in one environment, but couldn't figure out what happened to the styles in another environment. In the first environment (Windows 2008 Server), the following link worked fine: <link href="/Styles/09/style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> but in the other environment (it's a Windows 7), I had to change it to work: <link href="../Styles/09/style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> Notice that the directories seemed to shift ahead one directory in the Win7, what's going on? It's like the "running" directory seems now be the \bin directory instead of the home! Which environment is configured correctly? How do I determine execution directory level? My concern going forward is pushing to a prod environment and guessing which configuration is correct. Any insight would be appreciated!

• ASP.Net Treeview - Client side event handling (jQuery??)

  I have a Treeview (bog standard ASP.Net Treeview) that is bound to an Xml source which allows the user to navigate to various parts of our system. Nothing special.... However, I wanted to generate a breadcrumb for use in the main content area on the client side when the user clicks a node in the Treeview control. I know there are mechanisms available for breadcrumb generation (such as site maps) but for various reasons I need to do it when a node is clicked. So far hooking up a click event using the document ready function available as part of jQuery is easy. However, having spent sometime looking I can not see how I navigate back up the tree nodes to get to each parent nodes text value to build the breadcrumb. I have been playing with .parent(), .parents() and .closest() available via jQuery but don't seem to be getting anywhere. Has anyone done anything like this or can anyone provide a better method? Thanks in advance....

• Creating Discoverable Network Resources (.NET)

  Is it possible to create a discoverable network resource in .NET? What I would like to acheive is a means of auto discovery for applications that run on a private network. The architecture will be similar to a client / server application, however the server could be any computer on the network. While the client would not be aware of the specific IP address that would be the server. I assume I would need some form of multicast, however not having used multicasting before I don't even know where to start. I guess when the client starts up it would broadcast an "is anyone there" message. Then each server could respond with details of their IP for future communication. Many Thanks, Ady

• ASP.NET Treeview Control not expanding on click

  I having an issue with the ASP.NET Treeview control. I create the treeview just fine but the nodes will not expand or collapse. I see there is a javascript error but it is for line 1 character 0 of the webpage, there is nothing at line 1 character 0. I am using the ASP:Treeview control in conjunction with the Telerik controls, but I'm not sure if that is an issue. I saw there was a similar question here but the answer is not pertinent to my site. Has anyone run into this issue before? I've tried searching Google and tried a number of proposed solutions but so far none have worked. Thank you,

• VB.NET: Force user to use the topmost form

  I'm programming a Minesweeper clone in Visual Studio 2010, with VB.NET, as a Windows Form Application, and I'm having trouble with the Game Won and Game Lost forms. When I show those forms, I want the game form to still be visible, so that the player can see where the mines were, but I don't want the game form to be enabled until the Game Won or Game Lost form is closed. Exactly like Windows Minesweeper does when you win or lose. There aren't any obvious properties for this, as far as I can see, and I've had no luck Googling, I don't know what terms to search.   Suppose you have the following... A ASP.NET web application that calls a stored procedure to delete a record. The table has a trigger on it that will insert an audit entry each time a record is deleted. I want to be able to record in the audit entry the person who deleted the record. What would be the best way to go about achieving this? I know I could remove the trigger and have the delete stored procedure insert the audit entry prior to deleting but are there other recommeded alternative?

• VB.net Need Text Box to Only Accept Numbers

  I'm fairly new to VB.net (self taught) and was just wondering if someone out there could help me out with some code. I'm not trying to do anything to invovled, just have a textbox that takes numeric value from 1 to 10. I don't want it to take a string or any number above 10. If some types a word or character an error message will appear, telling them to enter a valid number. This is what I have, obviously it's not great as I am having problems. • Can't access my files in ASP.NET web site

  I'm having a very difficult time. I am running windows 2008 server, I have an Able Commerce site using ASP.NET with C#. I'm writing an automated task that will ftp some xml files down into a local directory on our web server and then the program parses the xml file and saves information to our database. The problem, once I save the files to our local directory, my program has no access to the files. The NETWORK SERVICE user permissions isn't being inherited by the xml files so my program can't do anything with them. I can manually change the permissions, but this wouldn't be automated and won't work. How can I get this to work? help please, it's very frustrating.

• StructureMap 'conditional singleton' for Lucene.Net IndexReader

  I have a threadsafe object that is expensive to create and needs to be available through my application (a Lucene.Net IndexReader). The object can become invalid, at which point I need to recreate it (IndexReader.IsCurrent is false, need a new instance using IndexReader.Reopen). I'd like to able to use an IoC container (StructureMap) to manage the creation of the object, but I can't work out if this scenario is possible. It feels like some kind of "conditional singleton" lifecycle. Does StructureMap provide such a feature? Any alternative suggestions?

• Available options for hosting FTP server in .NET application

  I need to implement an FTP service inside my .NET application (running as a Windows Service) and have not had much luck finding good/current source code or vendors. Ideally it needs to be able to respond to the basic FTP Protocol and accept the data stream from an upload via a stream, enabling me to process the data as it is being received (think on the fly hashing). I need to be able to integrate it into my service because it will stack on top of our current code base with an existing custom TCP/IP communication protocol. I don't want to write (and then spend time debugging and performance testing) my own protocol, or implementation. I have already found plenty of ftp client implementations, I just need an acceptable server solution.

• Where are the readonly/const in .NET?

  In C++ you'll see void func(const T& t) everywhere. However, i havent seen anything similar in .NET. Why? I have notice a nice amount of parameters using struct. But i see no functions with readonly/const. In fact now that i tried it i couldnt use those keywords to make a function that promises to not modify a list being passed in. Is there no way to promise the caller that this function will never modify the contents of list? Is there no way to say to call code and say this list should never be modified? (I know i can clone the list or look at documentation but i like compile errors sometime)

  I have a .NET project that uses Crystal Reports. The application is distributed using ClickOnce. Things work great if the user has Crystal installed on their computer. However, not all of the end users have Crystal Reports installed on their computers. These users are receiving the following error... "Unable to install or run the application. The application requires that assembly CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.XmlSerialize Version 10.5.3700.0 be installed in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) first." Is there a way to force ClickOnce installs to ensure that a prerequisite is installed?

  Are there any recommendations on when to use Application settings (not per user settings) vs. .config file <appsettings>? Update Looking to understand some of the finer and important differences because they're both effectively key/value stores. For example, I know modifying appsettings in web.config will recycle the web application. Settings have been in .NET for a while now and I haven't bothered to look at them - maybe one is somewhat redundant, or using both at the same time doesn't make sense... that's the kind of detail I'm looking to understand and the reasons.

• DataReader or DataSet when pulling multiple recordsets in ASP.NET

  I've got an ASP.NET page that has a bunch of controls that need to be populated (e.g. dropdown lists). I'd like to make a single trip to the db and bring back multiple recordsets instead of making a round-trip for each control. I could bring back multiple tables in a DataSet, or I could bring back a DataReader and use '.NextResult' to put each result set into a custom business class. Will I likely see a big enough performance advantage using the DataReader approach, or should I just use the DataSet approach? Any examples of how you usually handle this would be appreciated.

  We are using RDLC's in a Asp.net web application. For reasons beyond our understanding, the first call to the database server fails with the following error: An error has occurred during report processing. Cannot open database "TryParkingIt2" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'EXTRANET\OurServerNameHere$'. Run the report again, it works. Huh? Update Click the button the first time, it fails. Click the button again, it works. The account being impersonated is a domain account.

• JQuery UI Dialog widget problem with IE and ASP.NET

  The JQuery UI Dialog model form widget has an issue with ASP.NET when a button on the dialog is clicked to submit the page. It doesn't work because the form elements in the dialog window are outside the html form tags. So I used the fix of doing $("#dialog").parent().appendTo($("form:first"));. It works in Firefox but not in IE because the modal window now appears to be part of the rest of the webpage which is disabled. Visually, this is evident by the stripes showing on both the modal window and the rest of the web page.

• Calling Stored Procedure from VB.net timeout error

  When calling a stored procedure from vb.net is there a default SQL timeout time if no timeout is specified in the connection string? I am unsure if there is a CommandTimeout specified in the connection string but am going through all the possibilites. Example if no results after 30 seconds (or more) throw: `System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.` SQL Profiler says that the script runs and ends in 30 seconds when the program timesout.. Tthe script runs without error in about 1 minute 45 seconds by itself in SQL server.
