  • Scraping &#151 character (long dash) error in Nokogiri

    - by DavidP6
I having trouble scraping a certain long dash that is encoded as — ; on the Time magazine site. It looks like this: —. It works fine when this dash is encoded as mdash, but when the problem dash is scraped, it is returned as unknown characters. I am using Nokogiri and am wondering if I have to use some sort of special encoding? The page says it is encoded with UTF-8.

  • Does UrlDecode handle plus (+) correctly?

    - by harpo
According to RFC 2396, The plus "+", dollar "$", and comma "," characters have been added to those in the "reserved" set, since they are treated as reserved within the query component. Indeed, search this site for "plus + comma , dollar $", and you get http://stackoverflow.com/search?q=plus+%2B+comma+,+dollar+$ Plus is only encoded (by the application) when it's not being used as a delimiter. But as others have observed, .NET's UrlDecode function converts plus to space. Where is this behavior specified?

  • Problem on creating font using a custom ant task, which extends LWUIT's FontTask.

    - by Smithy
Hi. I am new to LWUIT and j2me, and I am building a j2me application for showing Japanese text vertically. The phonetic symbol part of the text should be shown in relatively small font size (about half the size of the text), small Kanas need to be shown as normal ones, and some 'vertical only' characters need to be put into the Private Use Area, etc. I tried to build this font into a bitmap font using the FontTask ant task LWUIT provided, but found that it does support the customizations mentioned above. So I decided to write my own task and add those. Below is what I have achieved: 1 An ant task extending the LWUITTask task to support a new nested element <verticalfont>. public class VerticalFontBuildTask extends LWUITTask { public void addVerticalfont(VerticalFontTask anVerticalFont) { super.addFont(anVerticalFont); } } 2 The VerticalFontTask task, which extends the original FontTask. Instead of inserting a EditorFont object, it inserts a VerticalEditorFont object(derived from EditorFont) into the resource. public class VerticalFontTask extends FontTask { // some constants are omitted public VerticalFontTask() { StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(); sb.append(UPPER_ALPHABET); sb.append(UPPER_ALPHABET.toLowerCase()); sb.append(HALFWIDTH); sb.append(HIRAGANA); sb.append(HIRAGANA_SMALL); sb.append(KATAKANA); sb.append(KATAKANA_SMALL); sb.append(WIDE); this.setCharset(sb.toString()); } @Override public void addToResources(EditableResources e) { log("Putting rigged font into resource..."); super.addToResources(e); //antialias settings Object aa = this.isAntiAliasing() ? RenderingHints.VALUE_TEXT_ANTIALIAS_ON :RenderingHints.VALUE_TEXT_ANTIALIAS_OFF; VerticalEditorFont ft = new VerticalEditorFont( Font.createSystemFont( this.systemFace, this.systemStyle, this.systemSize), null, getLogicalName(), isCreateBitmap(), aa, getCharset()); e.setFont(getName(), ft); } VerticalEditorFont is just a bunch of methods logging to output and call the super. I am still trying to figure out how to extend it. But things are not going well: none of the methods on the VerticalEditorFont object get called when executing this task. My questions are: 1 where did I do wrong? 2 I want to embed a truetype font to support larger screens. I only need a small part of the font inside my application and I don't want it to carry a font resource weighing 1~2MB. Is there a way to extract only the characters needed and pack them into LWUIT?

  • Create, sort, and print a list of 100 random ints in the fewest chars of code

    - by TheSoftwareJedi
What is the least amount of code you can write to create, sort (ascending), and print a list of 100 random positive integers? By least amount of code I mean characters contained in the entire source file, so get to minifying. I'm interested in seeing the answers using any and all programming languages. Let's try to keep one answer per language, edit the previous to correct or simplify. If you can't edit, comment?

  • Why use spaces instead of tabs for indentation? [closed]

Possible Duplicate: Are spaces preferred over tabs for indentation? Why do most coding standards recommend the use of spaces instead of tabs? Tabs can be configured to be as many characters wide as needed, but spaces can't. Example: Zend cs Pear cs Pear manual: This helps to avoid problems with diffs, patches, SVN history and annotations. How could tabs cause problems?

  • [PHP] Read and write to a file while keeping lock

    - by Znarkus
Hi! I am making a simple page load counter by storing the current count in a file. This is how I want to do this: Lock the file Read the current count Increment it Write new count Unlock file/close it Can this be done? As I understand it, the file can't be written to without losing the lock. The only way I have come up with to tackle this, is to write a character using "r+" mode, and then counting characters.

  • how could I store data within a GUID

    - by Mark
I have an application that I want to represent a users session (just small pieces of data here and there) within a GUID. Its a 16 HEX characters (so 16^16 possible values) string and I want to 'encode' some data within that GUID. How can I achieve this? I am really after any ideas and implementations here, Ive not yet decided on the best mechanism for it yet. I would also like encryption to be involved if possible... Thanks a lot Mark

  • Parsing numbers at PreviewTextInput

    - by Nitin Chaudhari
I have a WPF application in which I have a hook at PreviewTextInput, through that I get the currently entered character and I have the string already entered. Given this I need to write the following function : bool ShouldAccept(char newChar, string existingText) existingText can be comma seperated valid numbers(including exponential) and it should just return false when invalid characters are pressed. My code(if else based) currently has a lot of flaws, I wanted to know if there is any smart way to do it.

  • How to properly pass address to google geocoding service

    - by clinisbut
I'm getting some problems trying Google Geocoding service when using special characters like "º" or letters with accents. Whenever I try something like: "barcelona, nº 10" I get 0 results. But trying: "barcelona n 10" I get results... I suspect is something related with encoding. I tried this: geocoder.geocode({'address': encodeURI( $('#direction').val() )}, function(){} ); But didn't help. Any Idea?

  • Code Golf: Countdown Number Game

    - by Noldorin
Challenge Here is the task, inspired by the well-known British TV game show Countdown. The challenge should be pretty clear even without any knowledge of the game, but feel free to ask for clarifications. And if you fancy seeing a clip of this game in action, check out this YouTube clip. It features the wonderful late Richard Whitely in 1997. You are given 6 numbers, chosen at random from the set {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 25, 50, 75, 100}, and a random target number between 100 and 999. The aim is to make use the six given numbers and the four common arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division; all over the rational numbers) to generate the target - or as close as possible either side. Each number may only be used once at most, while each arithmetic operator may be used any number of times (including zero.) Note that it does not matter how many numbers are used. Write a function that takes the target number and set of 6 numbers (can be represented as list/collection/array/sequence) and returns the solution in any standard numerical notation (e.g. infix, prefix, postfix). The function must always return the closest-possible result to the target, and must run in at most 1 minute on a standard PC. Note that in the case where more than one solution exists, any single solution is sufficient. Examples: {50, 100, 4, 2, 2, 4}, target 203 e.g. 100 * 2 + 2 + (4 / 4) e.g. (100 + 50) * 4 * 2 / (4 + 2) {25, 4, 9, 2, 3, 10}, target 465 e.g. (25 + 10 - 4) * (9 * 2 - 3) {9, 8, 10, 5, 9, 7), target 241 e.g. ((10 + 9) * 9 * 7) + 8) / 5 Rules Other than mentioned in the problem statement, there are no further restrictions. You may write the function in any standard language (standard I/O is not necessary). The aim as always is to solve the task with the smallest number of characters of code. Saying that, I may not simply accept the answer with the shortest code. I'll also be looking at elegance of the code and time complexity of the algorithm! My Solution I'm attempting an F# solution when I find the free time - will post it here when I have something! Format Please post all answers in the following format for the purpose of easy comparison: Language Number of characters: ??? Fully obfuscated function: (code here) Clear (ideally commented) function: (code here) Any notes on the algorithm/clever shortcuts it takes.

  • Character encoding issues?

    - by Santosh
We had a a clob column in DB. Now when we extract this clob and try to display it (plain text not html), it prints junk some characters on html screen. The character when directly streamed to a file looks like ” (not the usual double quote on regular keyboard) One more observation: System.out.println("”".getBytes()[0]); prints -108. Why a character byte should be in negative range ? Is there any way to display it correctly on a html screen ?

  • Formatting a CSV File that contains HTML for Import to Excel

    - by Dave
I would like to export a CSV file from my application for importing into Excel (or any other spreadsheet that supports CSV files). Anyhow, one of the cells in my table have rich content (i.e. HTML) which can, of course, contain commas as well as other HTML characters and formatting. I realize that Excel "can" handle HTML formatted text, but exporting it as CSV tends to screw up the data for importing. Is there some particular way I can format that particular cell so that imports correctly?

  • Images inside of UILabel

    - by enby
hello everyone! I'm trying to find the best way to display images inside of UILabels (in fact, I wouldn't mind switching to something other than UILabel if it supports images with no hassle) The scenario is: I have a table view with hundreds of cells and UILabel being the main component of each cell The text I assign to each cell contains sequences of characters that need to be parsed out and represented as an image In simpler words, imagine a TableView of an instant messenger that parses replaces all ":)", ":(", ":D" etc with corresponding smiley images Any input would be greatly appreciated!
