  • Null Pointer Exception in my BroadcastReceiver class

    - by user1760007
    I want to search a db and toast a specific column on the startup of the phone. The app keeps crashing and getting an exception even though I feel as the code is correct. @Override public void onReceive(Context ctx, Intent intent) { Log.d("omg", "1"); DBAdapter do = new DBAdapter(ctx); Log.d("omg", "2"); Cursor cursor = do.fetchAllItems(); Log.d("omg", "3"); if (cursor.moveToFirst()) { Log.d("omg", "4"); do { Log.d("omg", "5"); String title = cursor.getString(cursor.getColumnIndex("item")); Log.d("omg", "6"); // i = cursor.getInt(cursor.getColumnIndex("id")); Toast.makeText(ctx, title, Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); } while (cursor.moveToNext()); } cursor.close(); } The frustrating part is that I don't see any of my "omg" logs show up in logcat. I only see when my application crashes. I get three lines of errors in logcat. 10-19 12:31:11.656: E/AndroidRuntime(1471): java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to start receiver com.test.toaster.MyReciever: java.lang.NullPointerException 10-19 12:31:11.656: E/AndroidRuntime(1471): at com.test.toaster.DBAdapter.fetchAllItems(DBAdapter.java:96) 10-19 12:31:11.656: E/AndroidRuntime(1471): at com.test.toaster.MyReciever.onReceive(MyReciever.java:26) For anyone interested, here is my DBAdapter fetchAllItems code: public Cursor fetchAllItems() { return mDb.query(DATABASE_TABLE, new String[] { KEY_ITEM, KEY_PRIORITY, KEY_ROWID }, null, null, null, null, null); }

  • EditText items in a scrolling list lose their changes when scrolled off the screen

    - by ianww
    I have a long scrolling list of EditText items created by a SimpleCursorAdapter and prepopulated with values from an SQLite database. I make this by: cursor = db.rawQuery("SELECT _id, criterion, localweight, globalweight FROM " + dbTableName + " ORDER BY criterion", null); startManagingCursor(cursor); mAdapter = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this, R.layout.weight_edit_items, cursor, new String[]{"criterion","localweight","globalweight"}, new int[]{R.id.criterion_edit, R.id.localweight_edit, R.id.globalweight_edit}); this.setListAdapter(mAdapter); The scrolling list is several emulator screens long. The items display OK - scrolling through them shows that each has the correct value from the database. I can make an edit change to any of the EditTexts and the new text is accepted and displayed in the box. But...if I then scroll the list far enough to take the edited item off the screen, when I scroll back to look at it again its value has returned to what it was before I made the changes, ie. my edits have been lost. In trying to sort this out, I've done a getText to look at what's in the EditText after I've done my edits (and before a scroll) and getText returns the original text, even though the EditText is displaying my new text. It seems that the EditText has only accepted my edits superficially and they haven't been bound to the EditText, meaning they get dropped when scrolled off the screen. Can anyone please tell me what's going on here and what I need to do to force the EditText to retain its edits? Thanks Ian

  • Restore history and current page on resuming webview

    - by qubit
    I have a webview that I use to navigate from page to page. I have implemented go back and go forward. My problem is that when I return to the webview after visiting another activity, the history is lost i.e. the webview starts again on the first page. How do I code it so that after I call finish on the webview to swap to another activity on returning to the webview, the WebBackForwardList is restored and I am taken to the page I was on when I left the webview? I have tried overriding onSaveInstanceState and onRestoreInstanceState using webview.save/restoreState(bundle) but with no success. I have achieved returning to the last page by saving the last url in preferences, but have been unable to restore the entire history.

  • Bitmap size exceeds VM budget after second load

    - by jonny
    This is driving me crazy. I have a game which has a bitmap as the background, this is big so I scale it down and this works fine. However when I navigate to another activity and then reload the game screen it crashes on drawing the background. I am calling recycle on all the bitmaps and setting them to null on onDestroy() but this doesn't help. Any ideas and if not how can I debug the memory to see at which step its growing. I looked at getting the heap but nothing of any size is on there really. Thanks.

  • setting ringtone for a specific application only.

    - by Umesh
    I want to be able to set a ringtone which is associated to a particular application only. If the message with a special prefix arrives, my application intercepts it and does whatever it has to do. On message arriving, i want to be able to tell the user that the 'special' message has arrived, through a ringtone( which exclusively plays upon that kind of msg). anyone with a lead, please help.

  • How to display Preferences in a View

    - by Sybiam
    I'm building some sort of wizard to create user accounts in Sync and Manage account. I use a ViewFlipper my activity has to be an AccountAuthenticatorActivity. That said it also means I can't inherit PreferenceActivity. So I looked up in the code of PreferenceActivity and I believe it should be possible to have a PreferenceView that inherit from ListView. The Activity part of PreferenceActivity isn't really needed as far as I know. Though the PreferenceManager is what really blocks me. private PreferenceManager onCreatePreferenceManager() { PreferenceManager preferenceManager = new PreferenceManager(this, FIRST_REQUEST_CODE); preferenceManager.setOnPreferenceTreeClickListener(this); return preferenceManager; } This function imply that we can instatiate PreferenceManager using the operator new. Apparently, the sdk hide the constructor of the PreferenceManager. I'm kind of confused. Is there a way to inflate my preferences and display them without PreferenceActivity?

  • Getting contacts when ids are known

    - by frieza
    Hi, I have a list of 'n' contact ids corresponding to which I need to obtain the contact details. One simple way to make n queries using the contact ids and retrieve those contacts. But this will be very time-consuming especially if n is large. I would like to know if there is any simpler way to obtain these results (like batch query etc).

  • Getting huge lags when downloading files via Service

    - by Copa
    I have a Service which receives URLs to download. The Service than downloads these URLs and save them to a file on the SD Card. When I put more than 2 items in the download queue my device is unusable. It nearly freezes. Huge lags and so on. Any idea? Sourcecode: private static boolean downloading = false; private static ArrayList<DownloadItem> downloads = new ArrayList<DownloadItem>(); /** * called once when the service started */ public static void start() { Thread thread = new Thread(new Runnable() { @Override public void run() { while (true) { if (downloads.size() > 0 && !downloading) { downloading = true; DownloadItem item = downloads.get(0); downloadSingleFile(item.getUrl(), item.getFile()); } } } }); thread.start(); } public static void addDownload(DownloadItem item) { downloads.add(item); } private static void downloadSuccessfullFinished() { if (downloads.size() > 0) downloads.get(0).setDownloaded(true); downloadFinished(); } private static void downloadFinished() { // remove the first entry; it has been downloaded if (downloads.size() > 0) downloads.remove(0); downloading = false; } private static void downloadSingleFile(String url, File output) { final int maxBufferSize = 4096; HttpResponse response = null; try { response = new DefaultHttpClient().execute(new HttpGet(url)); if (response != null && response.getStatusLine().getStatusCode() == 200) { // request is ok InputStream is = response.getEntity().getContent(); BufferedInputStream bis = new BufferedInputStream(is); RandomAccessFile raf = new RandomAccessFile(output, "rw"); ByteArrayBuffer baf = new ByteArrayBuffer(maxBufferSize); long current = 0; long i = 0; // read and write 4096 bytes each time while ((current = bis.read()) != -1) { baf.append((byte) current); if (++i == maxBufferSize) { raf.write(baf.toByteArray()); baf = new ByteArrayBuffer(maxBufferSize); i = 0; } } if (i > 0) // write the last bytes to the file raf.write(baf.toByteArray()); baf.clear(); raf.close(); bis.close(); is.close(); // download finished get start next download downloadSuccessfullFinished(); return; } } catch (Exception e) { // not successfully downloaded downloadFinished(); return; } // not successfully downloaded downloadFinished(); return; }

  • Allowing AsyncTask to Manipulate Values in Different Activity Classes

    - by Matt
    Hi guys, This title may seem strange, so let me try to explain what I'm trying to do. I have several activity classes, each representing a different view in my application. My initial activity class gets loaded when the application launches. The user enters values and eventually a TCP socket is opened, and I then use AsyncTask to listen for and respond to messages from the server. I'd like for this AsyncTask class to essentially listen until the app is closed/error condition reached, and be able to update values in other activity classes after they are started. Does this make sense (it's been a long, frustrating night)? I know that static activity class references are bad practice, and touching the UI thread from other activities is bad as well, but I'm having trouble finding a clean solution to this problem. Maybe using AsyncTask is not the best approach here? Should I be using a service instead or something else entirely? Thanks in advance.

  • How to get gesture IDs

    - by Colin Gough
    Is there anyway to get a list of gesture ids, from the gesture library that has been created using gesturebuilder. I want to link each gesture to an images, so some sort of an id or name is needed. I have looked at the samples and other online material avaialbe for gestures, and there is no information on this matter. Any help in this matter would be appreciated. Example: if (predictions.size() > 0) { Prediction prediction = predictions.get(0); if (prediction.score > 1.0) { if(prediction.best_score == Current_Image) { Correct(); Next_image(); } } }

  • How to change ScrollView's position after touch?

    - by Matt
    I'm trying to make a ScrollView with a list of numbers in it that the user can select from. After the user touches and scrolls, after the finger is lifted I want the scroll to "snap" to the item in the middle of the ScrollView and give me the output. My ScrollView contains a vertical linear layout with TextView objects in it. The ScrollView's vertical size is about 60sp. I think this would involve the ScrollView.onTouch with a ACTION_UP, but I don't know how to use it. Also, is there a way to get an item's index or value based on a position in the list? Thanks!

    Problem I send the message "12345" from the socket server to the client: myPrintWriter.println("12345"); After that I read this message on client: int c; while ((c = inputStream.read( )) != -1) { byte[] buffer2 = new byte[1]; buffer2[0] = (byte) c; String symbol = new String(buffer2 , "UTF-8"); String symbolCode = Integer.toString((int)buffer2[0]); Log.v(symbol, symbolCode); } Log.v("c == -1", "Disconnected"); What I see in log: With out.println("abcrefg"); Why? I think it's line termination symbol. I need to get string "12345" or any other and next strings correctly. Help me please.

  • How do I correctly use generics?

    - by ninjasense
    I basically am making webrequests and recieving a JSON response. Depending on the request, I am parsing JSON request into objects I have created. The parsing is pretty much the same no matter what the object Im parsing into looks like. So I have a bunch of methods doing the same work only with different objects, I was wondering how I could accomplish this with generics? Here is an example public static ArrayList<Contact> parseContacts(String responseData) { ArrayList<Contact> Contacts = new ArrayList<Contact>(); try { JSONArray jsonContacts = new JSONArray(responseData); if (!jsonContacts.isNull(0)) { for (int i = 0; i < jsonContacts.length(); i++) { Contacts.add(new Contact(jsonContacts.getJSONObject(i))); } } } catch (JSONException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } catch (Exception e) { } return Contacts; }

  • Efficiently using position to control actions

    - by John Ashmore
    I want to use position (returned from a gridview for e.g.) or a similar numeric integer to do various things, e.g. create a sprite, or in any command that wants something other than a number, e.g. I want to use something like: sprites.add(createSprite(R.drawable.image(position)); , where createSprite creates a sprite using the image supplied, instead of: if (position == 1) {sprites.add(createSprite(R.drawable.image1);} if (position == 2) {sprites.add(createSprite(R.drawable.image2);} ...etc There is an easy solution for strings: Most efficient method to use position to open a .java but what about for situations like this one?
