  • Where should I start with debugging my exchange server?

    I'm (foolishly?) attempting to install Exchange on top of Windows Server 2008 (64-bit) over Virtual Box running on Mac OSX Lion. Everything went smoothly until I got to the "Readiness Checks" tab. Readiness failed spectacularly on Hub Transport Role and Mailbox Role prereqs. Before I go too far down the rabbit hole in attempting to remedy this, I was hoping I could get some input on where to start in all of this. I already set up the following Active Directory roles, but it didn't seem to help: Active Directory Domain Services Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services I also enabled an Application Server role. Those three are the only roles I've set up-- I cannot locate within Server Manager the Organization Manager role or any of the other roles referenced in the list of borkedness below. Is this a typical experience in Exchange installation? Is there a tutorial created by somebody outside of Microsoft?   • Wicket, Spring and Hibernate - Testing with Unitils - Error: Table not found in statement [select re

I've been following a tutorial and a sample application, namely 5 Days of Wicket - Writing the tests: http://www.mysticcoders.com/blog/2009/03/10/5-days-of-wicket-writing-the-tests/ I've set up my own little project with a simple shoutbox that saves messages to a database. I then wanted to set up a couple of tests that would make sure that if a message is stored in the database, the retrieved object would contain the exact same data. Upon running mvn test all my tests fail. The exception has been pasted in the first code box underneath. I've noticed that even though my unitils.properties says to use the 'hdqldb'-dialect, this message is still output in the console window when starting the tests: INFO - Dialect - Using dialect: org.hibernate.dialect.PostgreSQLDialect.     Hi folks, I have an interesting database problem. I have a DB that is 150GB in size. My memory buffer is 8GB. Most of my data is rarely being retrieved, or mainly being retrieved by backend processes. I would very much prefer to keep them around because some features require them. Some of it (namely some tables, and some identifiable parts of certain tables) are used very often in a user facing manner How can I make sure that the latter is always being kept in memory? (there is more than enough space for these) More info: We are on Ruby on rails. The database is MYSQL, our tables are stored using INNODB. We are sharding the data across 2 partitions. Because we are sharding it, we store most of our data using JSON blobs, while indexing only the primary keys

  • IIS: No Session being handed out, but only in production

What I'm seeing is that when run on the dev machine (Win7), a HTTP session id is available inside the service operation (HttpContext.Current.Session is non-null). But when deployed to the server (Win2k8R2), I get "No session". On both machines the app is configured to use the classic app pool, and the app pools themselves are configured identically as far as I can tell. The only differences I can discern between the two applications is that on the dev box, under "Handler Mappings", ISAPI-dll is disabled (not on the server), and on the server there's a spurious handler called "AboMapperCustom-7105160" (does not exist on the dev box).   • changing selenium domain/subdomain within cucumber scenarios

    So, I have a Rails webapp that utilizes subdomains for separating the admin functionality from the public functionality using subdomain-fu. So there is functionality(that I want to test!) contained within two urls(eg admin.example.com and www.example.com). I want some scenarios to run against the admin domain, and some against the www domain. My problem is that I cant figure out how to change the domain that selenium uses at any time after startup. I can put something like this in my env.rb: Webrat.configure do |config| config.mode = :selenium config.application_address = "admin.example.com" end And it will work, but only for the scenarios that need the admin domain. If I try something like: host! "www.example.com" inside my steps, well it seems to just be ignored by selenium, which goes on using "admin.example.com" Any ideas? Or if its not possible, any ideas for a workaround?

    I have a series of rake tasks in a Rakefile which I'd like to test as part of my specs etc. Each task is defined in the form: task :do_somthing => :environment do # Do something with the database here end Where the :environment task sets up an ActiveRecord/DataMapper database connection and classes. I'm not using this as part of Rails but I have a series of tests which I like to run as part of BDD. This snippet illustrates how I'm trying to test the rake tasks. def setup @rake = Rake::Application.new Rake.application = @rake load File.dirname(__FILE__) + '/../../tasks/do_something.rake' end should "import data" do @rake["do_something"].invoke assert something_in_the_database end So my request for help - is it possible to over-ride the :environment task in my test_helper.rb file so I my rake testing interacts with the my test database, rather than production? I've tried redefining the task in the helper file, but this doesn't work. Any help for a solution would be great, as I've been stuck on this for the past week.

    Hello, I would like to know how to explicitly set a timeout for the Ruby DBI ODBC driver, when connecting to SQL Server. I would like long running queries to simply timeout and cancel themselves, saving further server resources and Rails processes. This was happening while we were using the ADO based Ruby driver, but now that we've switched to DBD::ODBC we are no longer experiencing timeouts. I've looked around but cannot find out how to set the query timeout value. I've tried explicitly setting some values in the driver, and specifying both Timeout and ConnectionTimeout and Connect Timeout in the DSN configuration for the connection. No luck.     Well, my fisrt question was a bit too general so i ll try again and hope this one is better. The way i see it is: Ruby-MacRuby or IronRuby or Rails Obj-c-Mac Development So Ruby has clearly more potential in desktop and web platforms and now with MacRuby, OSX native (and commercial) apps are on the way. If i get it wrong please correct me. For me that i will do a fresh start should i go with the modern Ruby or start learning c+obj-c? Will a newcomer benefit much (in learning & coding time, frustration, complexity) by learning/using macruby for osx apps rather objective-c? Or its pretty much the same? I hope some day to hang around here and help others.

    I have an issue where Passenger is not detecting the config.ru file for the following nginx server server { listen 80; passenger_enabled on; server_name callumj.com cjlondon.com; access_log logs/callumj.access.log; root /webapps/callumj_com/public; } Nginx just seems to ignore it and treat it as a normal web page (as I get forbidden areas when it tries to look for index.html in public). I have verified that the rackup command and execute config.ru and it boots up sucessfully. I have another server directive much like this which is powered by Rails and it seems to be working perfectly. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance!

Suppose that I already know the programming language well, but not the web-framework. The OS will be Linux.   • Testing across multiple sessions in merb using webrat

    I want to test across multiple sessions using webrat in merb. Apparently, this is fairly easy to accomodate in Rails via: http://erikonrails.snowedin.net/?p=159. Following the same logic, I am trying to do something that follows that pattern for merb and webrat. Here is an attempt (which does not work because MerbAdapter does not respond to visit and other webrat session methods; I don't want to take too much more time with this so I have stopped here for now): # defined in test.rb environment file module Merb #:nodoc: module Test #:nodoc: module RequestHelper #:nodoc: def in_a_separate_session old = @_webrat_session.response.clone @_webrat_session = Webrat::MerbAdapter.new yield @_webrat_session.response = old end end end end I tried a few other ideas, but obviously I am missing something. Anyone else know how this would be done in merb? I think I could specify a cookie jar using the request mock, but I prefer to do this with webrat.

  • Web framework for an application utilizing existing database?

    A legacy web application written using PHP and utilizing MySql database needs to be rewritten completely. However, the existing database structure must not be changed at all. I'm looking for suggestions on which framework would be most suitable for this task? Language candidates are Python, PHP, Ruby and Java. According to many sources it might be challenging to utilize rails effectively with existing database. Also I have not found a way to automatically generate models out of the database. With Django it's very easy to generate models automatically. However I'd appreciate first hand experience on its suitability to work with legacy DBs. Also I appreciate suggestions of other frameworks worth considering.

    When I try rake db:migrate, I get the following error: !!! The bundled mysql.rb driver has been removed from Rails 2.2. Please install the mysql gem and try again: gem install mysql. rake aborted! no such file to load -- mysql And when I try to "gem install mysql" Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing mysql: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. /usr/bin/ruby extconf.rb Can't find header files for ruby. Gem files will remain installed in /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mysql-2.8.1 for inspection. $ sudo gem install mysql -- --with-mysql-config=/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config has also been tried but same error. I'm on a Fedora 10. Help will be much appreciated.Cheers!

  • How to parse AMF data in Ruby?

    So I see that there are a few Rails plugins for serving AMF. However, is there a library that I can use in a Ruby environment to act as an AMF client: to read AMF data, and deserialize it into a Ruby object? If not, how could I best go about using tools built in other languages? I suppose I could write something in Python or Java or whatever, and call it from Ruby directly via backticks... but I'd first like to ensure that there isn't really any better option. Thanks!

  • Problem serving video to iPad from Mongrel 1.1.5 , RoR 2.0.2 on Mac OS 10.6.3 Server

    I am working off the Final Cut Server Integration sample provided by Apple that is a Rails app using 2.0.2 and runs on Mongrel 1.1.5. I can have a basic non-Ruby directory on my boot volume (Mac OS 10.6.3 Server) and can serve up video files just fine to iPad. However, when I drag the same video file into the 'public' area of the app running on -p 3000 it will not play on iPad, but will in Safari 4.0.5 desktop version. Images work fine so I know it's not a permissions issue. I'm getting the crossed-out play icon on iPad so it is not an issue of waiting on a large file to download before playing. I suspect it is a Mongrel/Snow Leopard issue but why would Safari on desktop work fine and not Safari iPad?     I've been trying to solve this problem for a couple of hours but I can't seem to understand what's going on. I'm using Rails 3 beta, and want to seed some data to the database. However, when I try to seed some values through db:seed, I get this error: rake aborted! Attribute(#81402440) expected, got Array(#69024170) The seeds.rb is: DataType.delete_all DataType.create( :name => 'String' ) And I got these classes: class DataType < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :attributes end class Attribute < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :data_types end While the migration definition for DataType is merely: class CreateDataTypes < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up create_table :data_types do |t| t.string :name t.timestamps end end def self.down drop_table :data_types end end Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

    FastCGI is old but it still seems like it must be the right answer in some cases. It seems like the preferred deployment of Perl/Catalyst web applications is with FastCGI. FastCGI was popular with Rails but seems to no longer be. (Why?) The Java world doesn't seem to have anything to do with FastCGI. Is something like Tomcat way better than Apache+FastCGI? Is choosing FastCGI still a good idea or just a lingering technology? Ted

    Is it possible to configure the FlexPaper reader to un-encrypt password-protected pdfs or swfs? Here is the use-case: User uploads a pdf My server would then convert the pdf to swf via pdf2swf Then somehow encrypt the swf with a password (not sure best way to do this) Then the FlexPaper would be able to un-encrypt the swf and display it What I am trying to avoid is the caching of readable swf in the browser's cache. Any ideas on the best way to achieve this? I know, even with this it will not be a fully secure solution, but certainly helps. Note: I am running this on Linux and OS X and using Rails. Thanks!   • Thumbnails from HTML pages created and used automatically in web application

    I am working on a Ruby on Rails app that visualizes product trees. The tree is built of nodes an everything is rendered in HTML/CSS3. Some of the products make several hundred SQL queries as the tree builds up (up to 800 queries on the biggest tree). I'd like to have small thumbnails of each tree to present it on an index page. So rendering each tree once again and modifying CSS to make a tiny representation is an option. But i think it's probably easier to generate thumbnails, crop, cache, and show these on the index page. Any ideas on how to do this? Any links/articles/blog posts that could help me?

    I'm using a twitter gem which basically accesses twitter and lets me grab tweets, timeline etc. Its really good but I have a lot of my code that uses the stuff it returns and I need to test it. The things the gem returns aren't exactly simple strings, there pretty complex objects (scary as well) so im left scratching my head. So basically I'm looking for an answer, book, blog, open-source project that can show me the rights and wrongs of testing around external services. answers that are either not language centric or ruby/rails centric would most greatly be appreciated.
