• Help for Platform plus Plugin development by J2ee

  Hi, everybody. I want to develop a monitor platform which can monitor many different subjects such as database, OS, middle ware etc. The system includes two parts: 1. Report center(Show some useful chart and report) 2. Collector(Collect information from monitored subject) For the time being, I just want to monitor some parameters of oracle and Linux. And I will add more monitor subject like MS SqlServer, IBM Db2 ect. later. I need a good architecture so I can easily add new monitor module and not to disturb original framework too much. I want to develop it by the method of “Platform + plugin”. A plugin should have its own UI, setting part and something else. I plan to use struts2 + spring + hibernate to develop report center. I am not very sure how to do design this architecture for I have any “Platform + plugin” experience. I ever googled some information such as OSGI and Portlet. I am not sure which one should be my best choice. Can anyone give me some instruction about it. Your help will be appreciated.

• Seperate html pages for each screen in Jquery mobile

  I am newbie to Jquery Mobile, so far what ever examples i searched contains only one html page for whole application, with multipe div tags where each page/screen is defined as div tag with data-role as page with some header and footers optionally. Based on user actions, we are hiding some div's(pages) and showing only expected page. Also, this multi-page template seems to be standard design, as written by some blogs. Are there any other designing ways? what I would like to have is multipe html pages, for ex one for login, one for home, one for contact etc. Other wise it is difficult to understand/code/debug issues, especially people from Java background like me.So, what I want is some kind of MVC design with JQueryMobile, like each view/screen as sepearate html associated with one js (Controller). Can we have multiple html pages in JqueryMobile app? If possible how to pass data/ maintain session between them? Any samples are most welcome. Thanks In Advance. Note: Also I don't want server side includes, may app contains 10 to 15 screens, each page will make a webservice call and fetch some data and map it to UI.

• "Order By" in LINQ-to-SQL Causes performance issues

  I've set out to write a method in my C# application which can return an ordered subset of names from a table containing about 2000 names starting at the 100th name and returning the next 20 names. I'm doing this so I can populate a WPF DataGrid in my UI and do some custom paging. I've been using LINQ to SQL but hit a snag with this long executing query so I'm examining the SQL the LINQ query is using (Query B below). • multiple ajax requests with jquery

  I got problems with the async nature of Javascript / JQuery. Lets say the following (no latency is counted for, in order to not make it so troublesome); I got three buttons (A, B, C) on a page, each of the buttons adds an item into a shopping cart with one ajax-request each. If I put an intentional delay of 5 seconds in the serverside script (PHP) and pushes the buttons with 1 second apart, I want the result to be the following: Request A, 5 seconds Request B, 6 seconds Request C, 7 seconds However, the result is like this Request A, 5 seconds Request B, 10 seconds Request C, 15 seconds This have to mean that the requests are queued and not run simultaneously, right? Isnt this opposite to what async is? I also tried to add a random get-parameter to the url in order to force some uniqueness to the request, no luck though. I did read a little about this. If you avoid using the same "request object (?)" this problem wont occure. Is it possible to force this behaviour in JQuery? This is the code that I am using $.ajax( { url : strAjaxUrl + '?random=' + Math.floor(Math.random()*9999999999), data : 'ajax=add-to-cart&product=' + product, type : 'GET', success : function(responseData) { // update ui }, error : function(responseData) { // show error } }); I also tried both GET and POST, no difference. • Exception calling remote SOAP call from thread

  This is an extension / next step of this question I asked a few minutes ago. I've a Delphi application with a main form and a thread. Every X seconds the thread makes a web services request for a remote object. It then posts back to the main form which handles updating the UI with the new information. I was previously using a TTimer object in my thread, and when the TTimer callback function ran, it ran in the context of the main thread (but the remote web services request did work). This rather defeated the purpose of the separate thread, and so I now have a simple loop and sleep routine in my thread's Execute function. • How do I design a Wizard-based system with SoC in mind?

  I'm building a Windows Forms system (in C# if it matters to anyone) that provides an application automation service. As this application is targeted at users who are not computer savvy, I've decided to break up the functions of the application into various tasks, and provide these tasks via a wizard UI. I'd like to avoid coupling the views and view engine (from which the Wizard will be built) to the automation engine. The problem I'm having is that the automation engine, which runs on a separate thread while it does its thing, needs to report status information back to the user, as well as listen for cancel or pause events from the user. Since I don't want the view engine or the automation engine to rely on each other, I'm having a hard time figuring out how to provide for this information conduit. Any insights into this issue I'm having would be greatly appreciated. I've been wracking my brain for a couple weeks now on this point, and I really don't want to give up and just couple everything together. If anyone needs additional details to help come up with some sort of idea please let me know and I'll be happy to provide them.

• Animated transitions in WPF

  I can't figure out what I'm missing here. Here's the problem: Consider a (Control|Data)Template with a Trigger that switches visibility of some inner UI elements. E.g. show a TextBlock when IsReadOnly==true and show a TextBox when IsReadOnly==false. Everything is perfect if you do this without animation - one or two setters would do the job. But what if you want a fancy animation? Then you would specify which animations to start in EnterActions and ExitActions. But the problem is what exactly the animations should do? Modifying width/height seems really ugly, because fixed sizes in WPF are almost always a wrong way to go and also it's absolutely unflexible. So far, the best I've come up with is modifying MaxHeight/MaxWidth to some extent, this gives just a little more flexibility but still seems brutal. How do you tell WPF to animate Width/Height of an element from 0 to "as much as needed"? UPD: Currently I do animate Opacity and RenderTransform, and it works. It's just that sometimes I'd like to see animations where elements slide around without transformation. This is not a critical question, but a quite interesting one for me.

• Looking for pros/cons of using GWT or JSF

  I'm a long time Java developer who has been building UI with Adobe Flex for the past few years. I'm looking to broaden my repertoire with a RIA technology that runs in a plain-old browser, no plug-ins required. I've read a lot about GWT but don't know much about JSF, especially given the varying implementations. Below are some criteria that are important to me as a developer. I'm hoping that the community might be able to tell me about the strengths and weaknesses of GWT and JSF in each: Layout: is it declarative, programmatic or a mix of both? Control library: how rich is the available control library? How easy is it to extend or write custom controls that "play nice" with the built-ins? Javascript: how much of it do I need to write in order to be successful with the framework? Cross-browser: assuming I'm not writing a lot of my own HTML and JS, do the frameworks function equally well in all modern browsers? Tooling: is a rapid edit/refresh cycle available? How easy is it to debug the client and server code? Bookmarking / Browser Navigation: this is a common problem in Flex; does the framework play nicely with these? I would love to hear any other important pros / cons I might not have covered. Thanks!

• .net layered design: return error code to forms indicating which controls have an error

  Let's say I have a simple application. It tries to add a new entry to a database grabing the info from the user. The information is a tipical MasterDetail objetc like an invoice. The Invoice object used to collect the data has some simple atributes (Id, Date, etc...) and a List of InvoiceDetail, consisting of some simple atributes (invoiceId, productId, quantity, etc...) A form in the UI Layer collects the data from the user, creates an instance of Invoice and sends it to the Bussiness Layer. The Bussines layer sends the data to a Validation Module. If any error in the input is detected it has to return some kind of error code. The Bussiness Layer has to send the error code back to the Form to let the user correct the worng information. I want the application to display some kind of warning (a different background color for example) in every form control with an error. ¿What's a good aproach to I manage the errors to be able to inform the form which controls are wrong? ¿Can I create an error object?¿Use delegates?. I'm using VB.net but don't think this is relevant to the solution of the problem. P.D: Please suggest me some tags to this post.

• JavaME - LWUIT images eat up all the memory

  Hi, I'm writing a MIDlet using LWUIT and images seem to eat up incredible amounts of memory. All the images I use are PNGs and are packed inside the JAR file. I load them using the standard Image.createImage(URL) method. The application has a number of forms and each has a couple of labels an buttons, however I am fairly certain that only the active form is kept in memory (I know it isn't very trustworthy, but Runtime.freeMemory() seems to confirm this). The application has worked well in 240x320 resolution, but moving it to 480x640 and using appropriately larger images for UI started causing out of memory errors to show up. What the application does, among other things, is download remote images. The application seems to work fine until it gets to this point. After downloading a couple of PNGs and returning to the main menu, the out of memory error is encountered. Naturally, I looked into the amount of memory the main menu uses and it was pretty shocking. It's just two labels with images and four buttons. Each button has three images used for style.setIcon, setPressedIcon and setRolloverIcon. Images range in size from 15 to 25KB but removing two of the three images used for every button (so 8 images in total), Runtime.freeMemory() showed a stunning 1MB decrease in memory usage. The way I see it, I either have a whole lot of memory leaks (which I don't think I do, but memory leaks aren't exactly known to be easily tracked down), I am doing something terribly wrong with image handling or there's really no problem involved and I just need to scale down. If anyone has any insight to offer, I would greatly appreciate it.

• Changing the direction of a Combo box dropdown in SWT

  Hi, I'm building an Eclipse plugin in SWT, and I have the following problem: one of my fields is a combo box, and in some cases it may have fairly long items as selection options. My plugin runs on the right side of the screen, so when you go to use the combo-box, the right side of the combo box is cut off. So, my question is: is there any way to change the dropdown's alignment relative to the combo control? It seems to be permanently left-aligned... and I'm pretty sure you can change the direction in Swing (though the only place I've seen it done is in the Substance UI demo. The Combo Box tab has boxes with North, South East, and West flyout directions... for my application, I need something like the West flyout) Note: Setting actual text limits is a last-case-scenario option; it would be quite a bit of guesswork to set the text limit dynamically (since the widget's view can be resized). Here's a picture (sorry, I can only have one link and no images :( ... I need some more rep :p) Left side of the line: Proper width - the view is the wide enough for the combo dropdown to display all the text; you can see the scrollbars on the right side. Right side of the line: Too small - Here, the view has been resized, and the combo dropdown scrollbar (as well as some of the text) is cut off by the right side of the screen. I always have more screen space available to the left (since this is always on the right hand side of the screen), but the combo dropdown always appears to the lower right. Hopefully this is clear enough.

• MSSQL in ASP.NET application getting unstable after a certain period

  Hello, I have an ASP.NET 2.0 application that I made to keep track of disruption reports about our public transport system. The architecture is pretty straight-forward; an MSSQL Express 2008 database, ADO.NET and a DataSet/DAL with a few methods to access the database. There is a set of .aspx pages for the UI in use by our dispatchers and on our public website, as well as a set of SOAP and REST webservices and an RSS feed. Everything worked just fine for more than a year, until two weeks ago. Now and then, it seems as the database enters an unstable mode, and the application starts responding something right, something wrong. The typical error is that apparently, an empty DataTable is returned to the public disruption overview or to the RSS generator. Thus, the user gets e.g. an empty GridView, but no exception is thrown AFAIK, and nothing is written to the Windows Application log. After a restart of the MSSQL Express service, the situation is back to normal. It has to be said that the situation first time appeared a few days after I made a new minor upgrade of the application. The RSS generator was slightly rewritten, and I added a WCF REST service. But the DAL and the database schema were untouched... Any hints of how we could keep the database stable? It is a bit annoying not to have a clue ;-)

• I Cannot retrieve ARPINSTALLLOCATION so we know where to install a new version

  I am trying to retrieve the ARPINSTALLLOCATION during the installation of a Major Upgrade version of the software. Following this info I managed to set the ARPINSTALLLOCATION to the custom path. However, retrieving it again isn't working. I've tried many things over the past days but it keeps defaulting back to the default installation path instead of the custom one. <InstallUISequence> <AppSearch After="FindRelatedProducts"/> ... </InstallUISequence> <Property Id="WIXUI_INSTALLDIR" Value="APPROOTDIRECTORY"> <RegistrySearch Id="FindInstallLocation" Root="HKLM" Key="Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\[OLDERVERSIONBEINGUPGRADED]" Name="InstallLocation" Type="raw" /> </Property> In the custom WixUI_InstallDir UI I have this in the CustomInstallDirDlg <Control Id="Folder" Type="PathEdit" X="20" Y="90" Width="260" Height="18" Property="WIXUI_INSTALLDIR" Indirect="yes" /> The alternative install path is in the registry, but it isn't retrieved and shown in the control. • m2eclipse: How to set Eclipse project settings when importing a maven project?

  Using m2eclipse Eclipse plugin, everybody on the dev team should be able to checkout source code, import Maven project in Eclipse and be good to go. I saw m2eclipse is being merged into Eclipse 3.7, and maven-eclipse-plugin won't be maintained any longer, so I'm looking for a m2eclipse-based solution (without running "mvn eclipse:clean eclipse:eclipse" before project import, which is what maven-eclipse-plugin does). maven-eclipse-plugin allows this in pom.xml <additionalConfig> <file> <name>.settings/com.google.gdt.eclipse.core.prefs</name> <content><![CDATA[ eclipse.preferences.version=2 jarsExcludedFromWebInfLib= warSrcDir=${project.build.directory}/${project.build.finalName} warSrcDirIsOutput=true ]]> </content> </file> The more general question is How would m2eclipse do something similar? For some cases, just saving the eclipse .settings/prefs file works (e.g. org.eclipse.jdt.ui.prefs), but in this case, com.google.gdt.eclipse.core.prefs is always overwritten on m2eclipse project import. • ASP.NET ListView, custom DataSources, and editing items

  The MSDN walkthroughs provide a number of examples where you can drag a DataSource from the toolbox, run through some simple configuration steps, then drag a ListView onto the screen, point it at the DataSource, and hey - you've got full table editing. Now I'm trying to write my own DataSource class (a class that implements System.Web.UI.IDataSource) and my own DataSourceView class. I now assign an instance of this custom DataSource class to the ListView.DataSource propery. The display of all the items is working well. However, updating, inserting and deleting just is not working. I'm overriding every function I can in my DataSourceView class, and they just aren't being called. This is such a huge topic, I'll focus this question on one simple example: When you press the "Edit" button (the button inside the ItemTemplate with a CommandName of "Edit", you expect the ItemTemplate to be replaced by an EditItemTemplate. This did not happen. The only way I could get it to happen was to handle the onitemediting event. protected void _listViewPublicHolidays_ItemEditing(object sender, ListViewEditEventArgs e) { _listViewPublicHolidays.EditIndex = e.NewEditIndex; _listViewPublicHolidays.DataBind(); } This is hardly a problem, but how come I had to do it at all? In the MSDN walkthroughs where I attach a ListView to a LinqDataSource, this code doesn't have to be written. Can someone who's been here before hazard a guess as to what would be different or missing in my custom datasource?

• JQuery Progress Bar Inline Text

  Hello, I am trying to use the basic progress bar however I am unable to figure out the css/command to actually put some text inside the bar. I am using this progress bar: http://docs.jquery.com/UI/Progressbar however I am open to other ones if they are just as simple to implement. I want it to display in the left corner some static information and then a percentage of complete somewhere in the right section. All css I attempted to do just made the information display below or to the side of. As well I am unsure how to actually have this CSS change based on a JQuery method (new to JQuery). below is my actual JQuery. • Setting Class-Level Variable to Use Between Event Handlers

  I'm having a hard time understanding why the following code doesn't work. I'm sure it's something remedial that I'm missing or not understanding. I currently have a page that asks for user input. If, based on the input and logged in user, I find data from this page already in the database, I need to update the existing records rather than creating new ones, so I set a class-level bool to true. The problem is, when MyNextButton is clicked, PreviouslySubmitted is still false. So, I'm not sure how to make the value of this variable persist. • jquery - array problem help pls.

  Sorry folks, I really need help with posting an array problem. I would imaging it's quite simple, but beyond me. I have this JQuery function (using sortables) $(function() { $("#col1, #col2, #col3, #col4").sortable({ connectWith: '.column', items: '.portlet:not(.ui-state-disabled)', stop : function () { serial_1 = $('#col1').sortable('serialize'); serial_2 = $('#col2').sortable('serialize'); serial_3 = $('#col3').sortable('serialize'); serial_4 = $('#col4').sortable('serialize'); } }); }); Now I can post it to a database like this, and I can loop this ajax through all 4 "serials" $.ajax({ url: "test.php", type: "post", data: serial_1, error: function(){ alert(testit); } }); But that is not what I want to do as it creates 4 rows in the DB table. I want/need to create a single "nested array" from the 4 serials so that it enters the DB as 1 (one) row. My "base" database data looks like this: a:4:{s:4:"col1";a:3:{i:1;s:6:"forums";i:2;s:4:"chat";i:3;s:5:"blogs";}s:4:"col2";a:2:{i:1;s:5:"pages";i:2;s:7:"members";}s:4:"col3";a:2:{i:1;s:9:"galleries";i:2;s:4:"shop";}s:4:"col4";a:1:{i:1;s:4:"news";}} Therefore the JQuery array should "replicate" and create it (obviously will change on sorting) Help please thanks in advance

• Return type from DAL class (Sql ce, Linq to Sql)

  Hi, Using VS2008 and Sql CE 3.5, and preferably Linq to Sql. I'm learning database, and unsure about DAL methods return types and how/where to map the data over to my business objects: I don't want direct UI binding. A business object class UserData, and a class UserDataList (Inherits List(Of UserData)), is represented in the database by the table "Users". I use SQL Compact and run SqlMetal which creates dbml/designer.vb file. This gives me a class with a TableAttribute: <Table()> _ Partial Public Class Users I'm unsure how to use this class. Should my business object know about this class, such that the DAL can return the type Users, or List(Of Users) ? So for example the "UserDataService Class" is a part of the DAL, and would have for example the functions GetAll and GetById. Will this be correct : ? • Running mysql query using node blocks the whole process and then timesout

  I have a node javascript that uses mysql npm (Felix). I have a procedure stored in my DB which I call when the user selects an option to kind of create its own instance of the program. The user chooses for how long he wants that data to be initialized for him. This is suppsoed to be between 1 and 2 years. So if he choose 1 year this query will insert around 20,000 rows into 1 table. If I run this query and a local DB this takes around 30 seconds (I suppose it is reasonable because its a big query which should be done only once in 1 or 2 years so its ok). For some reason my node script freezes as if it can't handle any more calls from other users. The even worse problem is that after like 2 minutes my client ui gets like an error from the server. At this point not all the data that was supposed to enter the DB is entered. After waiting like another minute all the data finally gets to the DB and only then it will accept new requests. • Security Exception when using Custom ASP.NET Healthmonitoring event in medium trust

  Hi, I'm using custom healthmonitoring events in ASP.NET We recently moved to a new server with default High Trust Permissions. Literature says that healthmonitoring and custom events should work under Medium or higher trust (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb398933.aspx). Problem is - it doesn't. In less than full trust I get a SecurityException saying The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy It works in Full trust or when I remove the inheritance of System.Web.Management.WebErrorEvent. Any suggestions anyone?   I've got a masterpage with some nice UI (jQuery) features. One of these options is interefering with my embedded YouTube (or other alike-) objects. On each, in this case, setInterval event the embedded video stops displaying new frames (for like a second). More detail: I've got a "polaroid" gallery (in the header) with only 5 100x100 images in it (test: preloading has no effect on performance) and my gallery will show or hide them (fade-in / fade-out) after a period of time. (test: non-animated display:hide or display:block has no effect on performance). After some testing and I've come to the conclusion that it isn't the "animated" showing or hiding of the pictures, but it's the interval itself (- since altering to display:hide or block had the same result). • jQuery AJAX with two domains

  OK here is the situation: I have an externally hosted CMS which works great for 99% of our needs. However on the more advanced things I inject my own CSS+JS and do magic. The problem I am running into is loading a simple HTML page from jQuery.ajax() calls. It appears to work in the sense that no warnings or errors are thrown; however in my success handler (which IS ran), the response is blank! I have been scratching my head for the whole morning trying to figure this out and the only thing I can think of is that is has something to do with the cross domain issue (even though it appears to work). This JS file resides @ http://apps.natronacounty-wy.gov/css/js/feecalc.js however the CMS website (which gets the JS injected into it) resides @ http://www.natronacounty-wy.gov/ Am I just being stupid or is it a bug that it looks like it should be working but isn't?
