  • mysql_query -- question about results "location"

    Forgive me if this is a particularly stupid question! mysql_query($query) returns a boolean, but you can also assign it to a variable $results = mysql_query($query) and then use the other mysql_ functions to extract data. Out of curiosity, how does mysq_query($query) act as both a boolean and a data container at the same time? What's happening "under the hood" during these steps? (yes, I am a n00b..., please be kind!)

    Hi all, I want to upload excel file using SqlBulkCopy into sql server 2005 table. My excel file size is 43MB. When i am uploading this file it will display error message that "The request filtering module is configured to deny a request that exceeds the request content length.".   • Why people are so afraid of using clone() (on collection and JDK classes) ?

    A number of times I've argued that using clone() isn't such a bad practice. Yes, I know the arguments. Bloch said it's bad. He indeed did, but he said that implementing clone() is bad. Using clone on the other hand, especially if it is implemented correctly by a trusted library, such as the JDK, is OK. Just yesterday I had a discussion about an answer of mine that merely suggests that using clone() for ArrayList is OK (and got no upvotes for that reason, I guess). If we look at the @author of ArrayList, we can see a familiar name - Josh Bloch. So clone() on ArrayList (and other collections) is perfectly fine. (Just look at the implementation). Same goes for Calendar and perhaps most of the java.lang and java.util classes. So, give me a reason why not to use clone() with JDK classes?

  • Is it bad practice to use python's getattr extensively?

    I'm creating a shell-like environment. My original method of handleing user input was to use a dictionary mapping commands (strings) to methods of various classes, making use of the fact that functions are first class objects in python. For flexibility's sake (mostly for parsing commands), I'm thinking of changing my setup such that I'm using getattr(command), to grab the method I need and then passing arguments to it at the end of my parser. Another advantage of this approach is not having to update my (currently statically implemented) command dictionary every time I add a new method/command. My question is, will I be taking a hit to the efficiency of my shell? Does it matter how many methods/commands I have? I'm currently looking at 30 some commands, which could eventually double.

    I am serializing a generic dictionary in VB.net and I am very surprised that it is about 1.3kb with a single item. Am I doing something wrong, or is there something else I should be doing?   • Fixing VB6 inaccurate mathmetical results due to rounding

    Try running this in a .VBS file MsgBox(545.14-544.94) You get a neat little answer of 0.199999999999932! This rounding issue also occurs unfortunately in Sin(2 * pi) since VB can only ever see the (user defined) variable pi as accurate as 3.14159265358979. Is rounding it manually (and loosing accuracy) the only way to improve the result? What is the most effective way of dealing with this kind of problem?

  • Injecting EntityManager Vs. EntityManagerFactory

    A long question, please bear with me. We are using Spring+JPA for a web application. My team is debating over injecting EntityManagerFactory in the GenericDAO(a DAO based on Generics something on the lines provided by APPFUSE, we do not use JpaDaosupport for some reason) over injecting an EntityManager. We are using "application managed persistence". The arguments against injecting a EntityManagerFactory is that its too heavy and so is not required, the EntityManager does what we need. Also, as Spring would create a new instance of a DAO for every web request(I doubt this) there are not going to be any concurrency issues as in the same EntityManager instance is shared by two threads. The argument for injecting EFM is that its a good practice over all its always good to have a handle to a factory. I am not sure which is the best approach, can someone please enlighten me? SB

What i am looking to do is make the tooltip box a multiline box.     I currently have a website with a standard web interface on index.php, and I made an iPhone-friendly version in iphone.php. Both pages handle the same arguments. It works fine when I manually go to .../iphone.php, but I'd like to rewrite anything on .../path/ and .../path/index.php to iphone.php if %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} contains mobile, and optionally add the query string (not sure if/when I'd need to add it). So far, this is what I have in my .../path/.htaccess: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^.+mobile.+$ [NC] RewriteRule index.php?(.*) iphone.php?$1 [L] RewriteRule index.php iphone.php [L] The problems are, it matches index.php in any subfolder, and it won't match .../path/?args… Special thanks to anyone who can correct/simplify/optimize anything =)

  • Experience using IRC to coordinate software development?

    I am part of a growing software project with at least 200 active developer in 10 locations. I would like to set up an on-line chat forum for developers because I think it would help to coordinate efforts. We have an email mailing list but I feel like some questions or announcements are too informal to send to everyone while mentioning it in a chat forum might be a useful community resource. I have never participated in a software project that used an on-line chat forum so I would like to hear about peoples experiences. I am particularly interested in technical issues: Use of IRC vs. alternative platforms; how to manage access, eg. for developers only, allowing users to participate; the value of requiring certain announcements to be made on the chat forum eg who is resolving broken builds etc. If I pitch the idea to the community I would like to have some good arguments why it would be a good idea and some prospective of its usefulness in other software projects.
