• Resource Pool sharing in Hyper-V Virtual Machines

  I understand that we can install Hyper-V on one server and run a number of Virtual Machines on it, upto the limit of resources of that server. I want to know if it is possible to install Hyper-V lumped on two or more servers, so that the Virtual Machines can use the underlying resources pool of both the servers? And also if that same is possible for an “n” number of servers, instead of just 2 servers.

  We've introduced a default my.cnf / my.ini file for MySQL Server that you can now see in the 5.6.8 release candidate: # For advice on how to change settings please see # http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.6/en/server-configuration-defaults.html [mysqld] # Remove leading # and set to the amount of RAM for the most important data # cache in MySQL. Start at 70% of total RAM for dedicated server, else 10%. # innodb_buffer_pool_size = 128M   # Remove leading # to turn on a very important data integrity option: logging # changes to the binary log between backups. # log_bin   # These are commonly set, remove the # and set as required. # basedir = ..... # datadir = ..... # port = ..... # socket = ..... # server_id = .....   # Remove leading # to set options mainly useful for reporting servers. # The server defaults are faster for transactions and fast SELECTs. # Adjust sizes as needed, experiment to find the optimal values. # join_buffer_size = 128M # sort_buffer_size = 2M # read_rnd_buffer_size = 2M   sql_mode=NO_ENGINE_SUBSTITUTION,STRICT_TRANS_TABLES    There is also a template file called my-default.cnf or my-default.ini that has these lines near the start: # *** DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE. It's a template which will be copied to the # *** default location during install, and will be replaced if you # *** upgrade to a newer version of MySQL.   On Linux systems, the mysql_install_db command will copy the template file to the final location, where the server will read and use the file, removing the extra three lines. On Windows, the installer will create extra settings based on the answers you gave during installation. Neither will overwrite an existing my.cnf or my.ini file. The only initially active setting here is to change the value of  sql_mode from the server default of NO_ENGINE_SUBSTITUTION to NO_ENGINE_SUBSTITUTION,STRICT_TRANS_TABLES. This strict mode changes warnings for some non-standard behaviour into errors. This can cause applications which rely on the non-standard things, like dates that aren't valid, to lose data. If we had just changed the server default, the new setting would affect all servers that lack an explicit sql_mode setting, including those where strict mode is harmful. So we did it in the default file instead because that will only affect new server installations. You should expect that in our next version after 5.6, the server default will include STRICT_TRANS_TABLES. Our Windows installer and some of our connectors already use STRICT_TRANS_TABLES by default. Strict has been our preferred setting for many years and it is good to see some development platforms are using it. If you need the old behaviour, just remove the STRICT_TRANS_TABLES setting. If you do this, please also ask your application provider to make it unnecessary. They can do that by setting the session sql_mode setting in their own connections, so the rest of the applications using the server don't have to have an undesirable default. We've kept this file as small as possible because we found that our old files were too big and confused people. We've also now removed the old my-huge and related example files. One key part of this is the link to the documentation, where we will provide an introduction to some key settings. We'd like to hear your feedback on settings that will benefit most users or are most important to call out for existing users. • How to automatically start VM created by virt-manager?

  I have created a virtual machine with virt-manager that runs on kvm/qemu. The machine works well when started through virt-manager. However, I would like to be able to start and stop the VM through a script in init.d, so that it comes up and down along with the host. I need to have virt-manager show that the machine is running, and to be able to connect to its console through there. When I use the command line that is produced by running ps -eaf | grep kvm after starting the vm through virt-manager, I get some console messages about redirected character devices, but the machine does start and runs properly. However, I do not get any indication from virt-manager that it has started. How can I modify the command line to get virt-manager to pick up the running VM? Is there anything else about the command line that should change when starting outside of virt-manager? • What are optimal strategies for using mapreduce and other applications on the same server?

  I have two applications that I need to run continuously to process data. 1.) An app that processes and aggregates information from sources 2.) A mapreduce workflow* that processes the above info I've thought about either getting vps hosting or getting my own inexpensive server and using xen to split the resources of the server. Getting a quad core box with 2 GB of Ram seems a lot cheaper than the grid options I've seen at slicehost, rackspace and others...

System requirements Supported operating systems: Windows Server 2008 R2 Additionally you will need: •Windows Server 2008 R2 (SP1 recommended) with the Hyper-V role enabled. •Drive Formatting: NTFS •Processor: Intel VT or AMD-V capable •RAM: 8 GB or more recommended •Hard disk space required for install: 100 GB ------------------------- So, the above text seems to indicate that you need a physical Windows 2008 Server (r2) server running, but from the googling I've done on the subject I've yet to come across a discussion that definitively answers the question. Many posts I've read seem to indicate it might be possible to run it on Windows 7 using one of the following: VirtualBox, Windows Virtual PC, VMWare but I'm not entirely sure.

• Is it possible to cause artificial network packet loss or latency?

  I'm trying to reproduce some issues on a deployed application where the MSSQL server and client are running in two separate machines. I think there may be network issues between the two machines, so I'd like to try and reproduce these conditions on two Hyper-V virtual machines (on the same virtual server). Of course, the network for these virtual machines is "local" so it's actually far from the conditions in a live environment. Is there a program I can run on either virtual machine which will degrade the network performance? Or maybe any other work arounds? For example, one way to reproduce the conditions may be to run the VMs on separate Hyper-V servers in geographically dispersed locations (so the SQL traffic goes over VPN or something) -- but this is a little long winded I think. There must be a simpler way.

  How do you decrease or shrink the size of a KVM virtual machine disk? I allocated a virtual disk of 500GB (stored at /var/lib/libvirt/images/vm1.img), and I'm finding that overkill, so now I'd like to free up some of that space for use with other virtual machines. There seems to be a lot answers on how to increase image storage, but not decrease it. I found the virt-resize tool, but it only seems to work with raw disk partitions, not disk images.

• Windows 8 / Server 2012 RDP connection is slow

  I recently installed Windows Server 2012 for development purposes at our office and noticed immediately that connecting via RDP is slow. It can take 5-10 seconds to connect at times, where as connecting to any of our Win7 or Win2008R2 boxes takes at most 1-3 seconds. At first, I chalked this up to the box itself needing a driver update or something, but just yesterday, I installed Win8 on my desk PC and connecting from home to that machine produces the same result. There is a 3-4 second pause at "securing remote connection" and then again at "configuring remote session". I don't see any warnings in the event log, and once connected, there do not appear to be any performance issues. Is there a known problem with RDP connections on Windows 8 systems? Anything I should look for?

  When somebody did mention "PSY" during a dinner at OOW this year with customers and colleagues from Korea I was completely clueless. I even didn't understand correctly who or what "PSY" is. I did forget about that until last week as a German online magazine did report on over 500 mio youtube hits for "Gangnam Style". Well ... I didn't know that I've almost missed a global phenomenon. And now I've learned that the song is omnipresent in Korea (and not only here) - and Gangnam is a really nice (and expensive) quarter of Seoul not that far away from my hotel. And if you need some rest during your lunch break you may watch these youtube vids - but don't blame me if you don't get the song out of your head anymore ... Gangnam Style by PSY Eton Style - my personal favorite Jakarta Flash Mob - wow! And NO - that's not the type of music I'd usually listen to!!!

Changing this is not possible with the simple personalization, the details below provide the instructions to change the Prompt. Create a custom class, I call it CustomHeaderKffCO.java in the package oracle.apps.ap.oie.entry.header.webui  (or any other). This class will have to extend from oracle.apps.ap.oie.entry.header.webui.HeaderKffCO. • Xen command xl doesn't create a vm but xend/xm does

  I'm a newbie to Xen, and I've recently installed Xen 4.2 by sources on my system. I've found a strange thing I've a VM when I start it via the command "xm create machine.cfg" all work fine, but if I use "xl create machine.cfg" it gives me the following error xc: error: panic: xc_dom_core.c:442: xc_dom_alloc_segment: segment ramdisk too large (0x4ba 0x2000 - 0x1bd9 pages): Out of memory libxl: error: libxl_dom.c:208:libxl__build_pv xc_dom_build_image failed: Invalid argument cannot (re-)build domain: -3 xenconsole: Could not read tty from store: No such file or directory What could be the problem? Any idea?

It feels like I could install some application on both ends and have them communicate over TCP and proxy the URL opening. Does something like this exist?

• Working the Chart Percentages

  Charting in BIP is such fun, well sometimes it is. Not so much today, at least not for Ron in San Diego. He needed a horizontal bar chart showing values plotted for various test areas with value labels at the end of the bars. Simple enough right? The wrinkle, they were percentage values so he needed to see '56%' not '56'! Still, it should be simple enough but the percentage formatting has a requirement for your values to be in a decimal format i.e. 0.56 not 56.0. 56.0 gets formatted as 5600%. OK, so either pull the values out as decimals or use the div function to divide the values in the chart by 100 e.g. <xsl:value-of select="myval div 100)" /> Now I can use the following the chart XML to format the percentages as I need them:   <Graph ... > ... <MarkerText visible="true"> <Y1ViewFormat> <ViewFormat numberType="NUMTYPE_PERCENT" decimalDigit="0" numberTypeUsed="true" leadingZeroUsed="true" decimalDigitUsed="true"/> </Y1ViewFormat> </MarkerText> ... </Graph>   That gets me the values shown the way I want but the auto axis formatting gets me from 0 >> 1. I now need to go in and add the formatting for the axis too.   <Graph ...> ... <Y1Axis axisMinAutoScaled="false" axisMinValue="0.0" axisMaxAutoScaled="false" axisMaxValue="1.0" majorTickStepAutomatic="true"> <ViewFormat numberType="NUMTYPE_PERCENT" decimalDigit="0" scaleFactor="SCALEFACTOR_NONE" numberTypeUsed="true" leadingZeroUsed="true" decimalDigitUsed="true" scaleFactorUsed="true"/> </Y1Axis>   Now I have a chart that's showing the percentage values and formatting axis scale correctly for me too. You can of course mess with the attributes above to get more decimal points on your labels, etc. Happy Charting!

• Starting VMs with an executable with as low overhead as possible

  Is there a solution to create a virtual machine and start it by having an executable file, that will start the machine? If possible to start as quickly as possible. Strange situation? Not at all. Read on... Real life scenario Since we can't have domain controller on a non-server OS it would be nice to have domain controller in an as thin as possible machine (possibly Samba or similar because we'd like to make it startup as quickly as possible - in a matter of a few seconds) packed in a single executable. We could then configure our non-server OS to run the executable when it starts and before user logs in. This would make it possible to login into a domain.

• Cloud hosting and single hardware point of failure?

  From talking to sales I thought Rackspace Cloud was running on a SAN and compute nodes (as VMWare's offerings do), only to find out it doesn't, so when the host server goes down for maintenance all cloud servers on the server go down (in our case for 2.5 hours). I understand Amazon EC2 also has this single-server point of failure. Which cloud hosting solutions don't rely on a single server? I've yet to find a list by architecture Is there a term that distinguishes between these types of 'cloud'? Is one of these 'grid computing' and the other 'virtualisation'? Can a SAN backed solution provide the same reliability as 2 mirrored cloud servers on (say) Rackspace Cloud? I am more familiar with the VMWare architecture and would like to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. I understand the standard architecture is to have multiple cloud servers and mirrored data between them; until we need multiple database servers I'm wondering if a SAN/node hosting solution would provide the lack of downtime we need without the added complexity.

• Dynamic Monitoring Service (DMS) Configuration Dumping and CPU Utilization

  There was recently a report of CPU spikes on a system that were occuring at precise 3 hour intervals. Research revealed that the spikes were the result of the Dynamic Monitoring Service generating a metrics dump and writing it under the server 'logs' folder for every WLS server in the domain. This blog provides some information on what this is for and how to control it. The Dynamic Monitoring Service is a facility in FMw (JRF to be more precise) that collects runtime data on the components deployed to WebLogic. Each component is responsible for how much or how little they use the service and SOA collects a fair amount of information. To view what is collected on any running server you can use the following URL, http://host:port/dms/Spy and login with admin credentials. DMS is essentially always running and collecting this information in the runtime and to protect against loss of this data it also runs automatic backups, by default at the 3 hour interval mentioned above. Most of the management options for DMS are exposed through WLST but these settings are not so we must open the dms_config.xml file which can be found in DOMAIN_HOME/config/fmwconfig/servers/<server_name>/dms_config.xml. The contents are fairly short and at the bottom you will find the following entry: <dumpConfiguration>     <dump intervalSeconds="10800" maxSizeMBytes="75" enabled="true"/> </dumpConfiguration> The interval of 10800 seconds corresponds to the 3 hours and the maximum size is 75MB. The file is written as an archive to DOMAIN_HOME/servers/<server_name>/logs/metrics. This archive contains the dump in XML format. You can disable the dumps all together by simply setting the 'enabled' value to 'false' or of course you could modify the other parameters to suit your needs. Disabling the dumps will NOT impact DMS collections or display at runtime. It will only eliminate these periodic backups.

  According to all the sources I read (openvz wiki, various mailinglists, forums, ..) the values of the cpuunits settings are relative to each other. So when all are equal and the system is busy, all receive the same cpu share. But something still puzzles me with that: why is there a tool "vzcpucheck" which shows "the power of the node/ host": Current CPU utilization: 18000 Power of the node: 880001 Why is there (do I need) an absolute number when all settings are only relative? Shouldn't those two settings result in exactly the same? ve1: 1 ve2: 1 ve3: 1 = 3 ve1: 293334 ve1: 293334 ve1: 293334 = 880001 (power of the node) What's the difference?

• Software to create a virtual parallel port in Windows XP?

  I am writing a program that will eventually be used on a computer with a physical parallel port and will need to set certain pins high or low in order to signal to an external device. However, the development laptop I am using does not have any physical parallel ports and is too low powered to run a virtual machine. Is there any option available that will create a virtual parallel port within Windows XP? Ideally it would include a debug mode that would allow me to see what values have been pushed out on the parallel port.

  Some softwares contain tests to see if they are running on a virtual machine. It's very unpleasant to see alert messages such as "Sorry, this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine." and have your software stopped! There is a lot of legal reasons to override such tests. Moreover such limitations are (most of the time) not written in User License Agreement. So... how to hide a program that is running on a virtual machine? I'm using a Virtual Private Server (VPS) with Hyper-V... I'm administrator of the Operating System (Windows 2003) installed on this VPS, not administrator of Hyper-V.

• How to let Linux Python application handle termination on user logout correctly?

  I have written a Linux GUI application in Python that needs to do some cleanup tasks before being terminated when the user logs out. Unfortunately it seems, that on logout, all applications are killed. I tried both to handle POSIX signals and DBUS notifications, but nothing worked. Any idea what I could have made wrong? On application startup I register some termination handlers: # create graceful shutdown mechanisms signal.signal(signal.SIGTERM, self.on_signal_term) self.bus = dbus.SessionBus() self.bus.call_on_disconnection(self.on_session_disconnect) When the user logs out, neither self.on_signal_term nor self.on_session_disconnect are called.
