  • IP KVM switch, or serial console box for remote admin?

    - by grahzny
We have a small server farm (11 now, may add more in the future) of HP Proliant DL160 G6s. They all run either Linux (server only, no X11) or VMware ESX. We had intended to get models with iLO, in case BIOS-level remote admin became an issue, but that didn't happen. I had an IP KVM switch recommended to me (along with some sort of Remote Reboot hardware.) I've since realized that none of our machines need GUI administration, so perhaps a serial console switch would be a cheaper and more appropriate option. Something like this: http://www.kvm-switches-online.com/serimux-cs-32.html Do you folks have an opinions on which way is a better choice? Should we go for the ease of setup (plug and go, instead of turning on the feature in the BIOS and making sure the serial settings are correct) and the flexibility of an IP KVM switch even with the extra cost? Or is a serial console switch just fine?

  • Getting Dictionary<string,string> from List<Control>

    - by codymanix
    I want a dictionary containing the names and text of all controls. Is it possible with predefined framework methods/LINQ/colection initializers or do I have to make a loop and add all entries by myself? This gives me an error message: List<Control> controls; // .. initialize list .. controls.ToDictionary((Control child,string k)=>new KeyValuePair<string,string>(child.Name, child.Text));

  • How do I validate XML via RELAX NG in Ruby?

    - by cdleary
The REXML module appears to have support for RELAX NG validation, but the docs don't have any real information on using the validation portion of the framework. How would you validate an XML document with a RELAX NG schema? A code snippet would be most helpful. TIA!

  • Windows7 x64 clipboard failure

    - by Konoplianko
Hi. I'm using windows 7 x64 and i need to work with citrix client. Unfortunately my clipboard stops working after 5-10 minutes with citrix apps. I can't copy/paste anything. But on citrix clipboard is still working. Problem disappears after rebooting computer. But it's takes too much time. Is there any way to restart clipboard process or fix this problem without rebooting ? Thanks ! UPD.1 Copy/Paste is broken only on my local computer. It means that when I'm pressing ctrl+c (also when doing the same with mouse) ctrl+v pastes nothing (in GUI menu it's highlighted with gray - disabled). Occasionally it repairs itself when I'm starting rebooting: nsd.exe crashes with some exception, reboot stops and then it works again. But I'm still not sure that problem is in nsd.exe (Lotus notes)

  • Understanding the Linux Root

    - by Zac
I've been using Linux (Ubuntu) for about 2 weeks now and am still struggling with some basic concept surrounding the root user: (1) Some terminal operations (such as making subdirectories inside a FHS directory such as /opt) require me to prefix the command with sudo - why? I guess what I'm choking on is: if I'm already logged in as a valid system user, why do I have to be a superuser/root in order to modify things that the sysadmin has already deemed me worthy of accessing? (2) Is there a GUI (Gnome, KDE) equivalent to sudo? Is there a way to assume a superuser role through a graphical context, rather than from inside a new shell? (3) I can't access the /root directory logged in as myself... but I installed the system to begin with and was never asked to create a root account! How do I log in as root and gain access to /root?!? Thanks for all feedback & input!

  • GPL liscensed frameworks on eccommerce websites

    - by Adam McMahon
Ok this may be a foolish question, but I just want some clarification on this. If you build a website on a GPL licensed web framework, let's say a browser based game or some kind of kind of sophisticated web application are you required to redistribute all the code? If this is so what licenses would allow you to build on top of an opensource project without requiring you to redistribute the code?

  • What does the * symbol do near a function argument and how to use that in others scenarios?

    - by user502052
I am using Ruby on Rails 3 and I would like to know what means the presence of a *simbol near a function argument and to understand its usages in others scenarios. Example scenario (this method was from the Ruby on Rails 3 framework: def find(*args) return to_a.find { |*block_args| yield(*block_args) } if block_given? options = args.extract_options! if options.present? apply_finder_options(options).find(*args) else case args.first when :first, :last, :all send(args.first) else find_with_ids(*args) end end end

  • How does the setup bootstrapper detect if prerequisites are installed?

    - by Marek
Trying to solve this problem. I would like to learn how the bootstrapper detects if prerequisites (specifically .NET 3.5) are installed. According to this reference, a way to detect if .NET is installed is to check the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\v3.5 Using process monitor, I have inspected registry queries done by the bootstrapper (setup.exe) and it did not show any access to this registry key. Does anybody know how the bootstrapper determines whether the prerequisites are installed on the target system?

  • Winlogon.exe causes C++ runtime error

    - by Evan
Recently I've become unable to log into my Dell Precision M2400. It uses the Dell Controlpoint login GUI instead of the typical windows one, and has now started giving me a runtime error on winlogon.exe that ends with a c000021a BSOD. I have tried running through safe mode and a restore to the last known good setting with no success. Unfortunately by BIOS password is locked and the one IT guy with the password is on vacation and unreachable until after I leave for a business trip. Is there anyway to bypass the Dell logon screen and get to the default windows one? Thanks.

  • Get methods covered by a unit test

    - by Victor Hurdugaci
Is is possible to do the following from a Visual Studio 2010 plugin? If yes, how? Run all unittests in solution (with code coverage enabled) Wait for all tests to complete For successfully completed tests: Determine which methods were called during each test (directly by the test or indirectly by the tested methods). What I actually don't know is how to interact with the testing framework...

  • Reasons to start a new project in COBOL

    - by luvieere
Are there any feasible reasons to start a new project in COBOL? What benefits of this language one would find convincing enough to start a new project in it? I'm thinking more about viewing the language in terms of Behavior Driven Development, something related to the steps involved in using a framework such as Cucumber, only that behavior description and step definition would be integrated into one unit by using tha language's features.

  • How can I make Windows Media Player ignore global hotkeys in Windows 7?

    - by schnapple
I have Windows 7 and a Logitech G15 keyboard. One of the programs with the Logitech G15 allows you to control media players such as Winamp with the playback keys on the keyboard. Problem I'm having is that, even though I have told this program to not control Windows Media Player, every time I use it to pause Winamp, it then hits plays (or unpauses) Windows Media Player. Even more annoying given that Windows Media Player isn't even running as an active GUI program and instead as a background process, so I hear the sound of whatever the last video it was I playing. If I end-task wmplayer.exe it spins right back up but at least now it has no knowledge of a video to play, but this is annoying. How can I either a) Have Windows Media Player in Windows 7 completely unload when I close it, or b) Have Windows Media Player in Windows 7 ignore any sort of global hotkeys?

  • Pintura OR Perserve 2.0 - Production Ready?

    - by Scott
I'm very interested in this framework, coupled with a NoSQL backend like MongoDB. Basically, my blue-sky vision is this: ExtJS/Pintura/MongoDB. I would probably plug in Rhino as the js engine. Is there anybody here using Pintura in a production environment? What are the pitfalls? What is your general experience? Thanks.

  • How to select and AMI when creating an instance of EC2

    - by Prashant
I am using Amazon EC2 for the first time, and need to create an instance that runs Windows, MSSQL Server 2008, .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 and IIS Server 6.0. I am unable to decide what AMI (out of the huge list of community AMIs) should I choose to meet my requirements. Is there a way I can make this decision without doing trial and error.

  • Adobe Flex 4.0 vs Silverlight 4.0

    - by Jason Towne
While this not necessarily a technical question, I believe it will help a lot of developers (including myself!). With Silverlight 4.0 and Flex 4.0 both in beta, I thought I would put out an open question to the community and see what everyone likes and dislikes about each framework and why. I've worked with Flex in the past but have decided to take another look at Silverlight with the new version being released. Thoughts anyone? Edit: Made it a community wiki. :)

  • Remote login/access on windows

    - by acidzombie24
Hi I was wondering what software I can use to access my and other machines remotely? I used ssh which is nice but i don't know how it would be like on windows. (I assume its the same idea but windows console instead of a bash terminal?) Windows has a lot of applications that require GUI/MouseClicks. Actually I don't know a single ssh or vpn command line installer not that i'm complaining (but is helpful if you can mention some). I haven't use a VPN, is this taking control of a users screen/session? Or is it another instance/session as if you logged in as a different user on that box? What solutions are at my disposal for windows? (7)

  • Validating method arguments with Data Annotation attributes

    - by schemer
The "Silverlight Business Application" template bundled with VS2010 / Silverlight 4 uses DataAnnotations on method arguments in its domain service class, which are invoked automagically: public CreateUserStatus CreateUser(RegistrationData user, [Required(ErrorMessageResourceName = "ValidationErrorRequiredField", ErrorMessageResourceType = typeof(ValidationErrorResources))] [RegularExpression("^.*[^a-zA-Z0-9].*$", ErrorMessageResourceName = "ValidationErrorBadPasswordStrength", ErrorMessageResourceType = typeof(ValidationErrorResources))] [StringLength(50, MinimumLength = 7, ErrorMessageResourceName = "ValidationErrorBadPasswordLength", ErrorMessageResourceType = typeof(ValidationErrorResources))] string password) { /* do something */ } If I need to implement this in my POCO class methods, how do I get the framework to invoke the validations OR how do I invoke the validation on all the arguments imperatively (using Validator or otherwise?).
