• Looking for open-source solutions for a knowledge sharing website

  There is a need in my workplace to setup a knowledge sharing site, a place where users can discuss projects they are working share documentation ask questions I am looking for a open-source system that answers these needs, and that can be setup in a week, and requires only PHP and MySQL. I am a Wordpress fan and developer and could easily implement such a system in Wordpress, however this system needs to be very simple to use for the technically challenged. Without customization, Wordpress users would still need to login to the "back-end" to post. I like the Stackexchange (OSQA) format, but these do not allow for file uploading out of the box. I do not have experience with Buddy Press, would this be an alternative?

• How to handle situation of programmer stealing credit for your project [on hold]

  There is a coworker who has stolen credit for my work. I created a system that will show live statuses of printing machines throughout the plant. There was one glitch in it so the coworker made an improvement and then re-wrote the entire system (copying 90% of my code, yet he added a new piece of hardware then took over the project). Now he asks me programming questions from time to time. I don't mind teaching coworkers how to program, but since he has stolen my ideas and credit in the past I am reluctant to teach him all I know. Today he asks me for a particularly challenging algorithm for this system. His code now looks exactly like the way I would program! How would you handle the situation? How can I decline helping him without appearing to not being a team player?

• Error Setting Java Environment Variables

  Problem:  Not exactly SharePoint, but the issue is when setting the %JAVA_HOME% environment variable, Java installs to the Program Files directory by default.  The space in the path seems to stop the variable from being read.  You get an error. • Why use binary files to stack up different versions on DMSs?

  I've used both Liferay and Alfresco trying to use them as the Document Management System for an intranet. I noticed the following: They use the file system and the database to store files They use a GUID to name the file on the filesystem and that GUID is used as an Id in the database. The GUID-named file is a binary file The GUID-named binary file stores all versions for a given file The path for the file in the DMS doesn't match the one in the file system The URL makes reference to the GUID when a certain file is requested What I want to know is why is this, and what would be the best way of doing it. Like how to would you create the binary file (zip?), and what parts would you keep in the binary file and what parts would you store in the database (meta-data, path?). I'm assuming some of the benefits of doing it like this. As having the same URL for a file, regardless of its current document path. And having only one file even if the file has changed names over time.

• suspend error on 14.04 LTS

  I've looked around and seems like various problems around suspend are wide spreaded for 14.04 release, nevertheless I haven't seen exactly my problem reported, nor my laptop model mentioned. So, the problem. When I press sleep button system seems to be going into suspend, i.e. screen goes black, it stops responding on the keyboard and wireless LEDs turn off, however the power LED doesn't go into suspend state and CPU fan also keeps spinning. But unlike the other problem described here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1315435 when I close the lid and reopen it - system wakes up and goes back to normal locked screen state, so reboot is not needed. System details: This is a clean freshly installed Ubuntu 14.04, 32bit Laptop Dell D630 kernel 3.13.0-34-generic

• Math behind multivariate testing for website optimization

  I am looking for theoretical resources (books, tutorials, etc.) to learn about making sound statistical inferences given (plenty of) multivariate website conversion data. I'm after the math involved, and cannot find any good non-marketing stuff on the web. The sort of questions I want to answer: how much impact does a single variable (e.g. color of text) have? what is the correlation between variables? what type of distribution is used for modelling (Gaussian, Binomial, etc.)? When using statistics to analyze results - what should be considered as a random variable - the web-page element that gets different variations or the binary conversion-or-no-conversion outcome of an impression? There's plenty of information about different website optimization testing methods and their benefits\pitfalls, plenty of information about multivariate statistics in general, do you guys know of resources that discuss statistics in this specific context of website optimization ?   I'm looking for a preferably PHP and web based system, to run on Ubuntu server. Basically it should be a "file forum" in the sense that users can register and be approved to post files to categories. Users with "read" privileges can then go through the categories and download files. Basically I sort of want a FTP-like system, but it should be as easy to manage users, categories, etc as that of a forum system like vB or phpBB. If it could have a forum look and feel that would also be great, but I don't want any discussions taking place.

• C# to develop Android app

  I am learning C# and I'm wondering if there is the potential to develop an Android app that satisfy the need that I'm going to explain. I would basically need an app that, when launched retrieves some data from a webpage (i.e. realtime stock prices), trim the xml to find the data i need and store this value into a variable. Then some calculation is performed on this data and the result is sent via email. It is already possible to launch an app automatically based on some conditions (e.g. every 5 minutes) by using the software Tasker. It is actually also possible to retrieve the data from a webpage and save to a Tasker variable or to a txt file somewhere in the phone (or Dropbox/Box...). But I would like to do that directly via an app so that everything is done "internally" once the app is launched. If that's possible, how should I proceed? Is there any good reference I can use to address my need?

• Ubuntu installation time problem

  I am installing Ubuntu and I am stuck at a point. The step is when it is asking me to select partition. It is showing me error: "No file system is defined Please correct this from partitioning menu". I am getting this error when I am clicking "Install". I want Ubuntu to install in /dev/sda7 which is 226727 Mb. I have Windows 8 in my system and I want to dual boot the system. So how to correct this error? I want to allocate this whole partition to Ubuntu only. Secondly, What should I put in the option: "Device for boot loader installation"? By default it is somewhat like this: "ATA WDC WD5000..." something like this. Please tell my both these questions. I would be very thankful to you. Thanks.

  Sorry for asking this here, I bet it has been asked plenty of times before but this time it's something specific which I haven't understood anywhere else: Suppose I have a service which requires to seek the database for different data once and in a while. For this I have 2 or 3 SSE, each one with a different retry basetime (20000 miliseconds, 1000 miliseconds...). What I'd like to know is if websockets can handle different "data type" accordingly to the request, for example, could I create one websocket to handle a notification system, a chat system, a group system instead of separated SSEs and treat data differently with javascript? And if so, would it be of higher interest (performance) than actually performing different queries to the server through different SSEs?

  When I tried searching this I would just get things on equality. When I was reading through some documentation for navigation in Android I had come across something I had never seen before. I came across this: mTitle = mDrawerTitle = getTitle(); It almost looks like something you can do in JavaScript where you can take the first not-null variable and assign it to a variable. In JavaScript I would do this: mTitle = mDrawerTitle || getTitle(); And it would return the first not null, in Java, is this double equals usage the equivalent in Java? What is this type of expression called?

• (SYSLINUX QUESTION) How to launch command prompt once syslinux boots up

  I have created a bootable USB drive using SYSLINUX I am booting my x86 system correctly. Once system boots I want to stop at console (command prompt) where I can type linux commands (cd etc) and run my executable file manually. Does that mean I have to have busy box installed (for basic commands). What makes system stop at command prompt? I do have /dev/console. My serial console is tty1. • VBA functionality in Word 2007 [closed]

  I have a VB system that utilises VBA and MSWord 20078. I have a few problems that I am hoping you solve for me. I need to search for a string in a Word 2007 document and then pickup all characters into a VB Variable from that string to the next carriage return inclusive. I will then manipulate the contents of the VB variable. When I find the search string I need to know what section of the document I am in. Once I have these two pieces of information I then need to continue to the next occurrence of the search string and repeat my functionality. Once I have dealt with the last occurrence of the search string I need to know that so that I can exit the process. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

• Disk drive won't let go of password prompt at bootup?

  I had a hacker intrude into my system, at the time it was obvious, so I reinstalled. However, I am left with what appears to be a fatal problem as far as one of my disk drives goes. When I install that drive in my system, a prompt comes up for the disk password, and what it is asking for is a root password. The disk works otherwise normally but despite all my efforts, I have not been able to fix this disk. I have gotten the operating system parted magic and done the most extreme clean up available, the internal one which sends a signal to the disk electronics which runs a built in clean up program. Darik's boot and nuke, I've tried them all but I can't seem to remove this with anything in the Linux line. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've run gparted, created a Sun, an Apple and various other schemes to partition the disk, all to no avail. Can anyone help?

• It would be nice to gain reputation in AskUbuntu from helping in Ubuntuforums [migrated]

  I know they are different but also they are very related. By implementing a reputation system in UbuntuForums you could harmonize points here and there. This would integrate both communities and avoid those competitive people to isolate from UbuntuForums (no idea the extent of this but I guess there is some of it). There are tons of questions never solved in UbuntuForums and that means people coming to AskUbuntu. That is plainly inefficient. Since there will not be a centralize system (different owners), why not to integrate them? Certainly, beans are not the proper measure to associate with reputation since you gain beans for anything but UbuntuForums could implement a differentiated system where users "like" one answer if solved they problem. Do you think it would be a good idea? PS: Amazing Askubuntu and reputation are tags not created yet!

  Possible Duplicate: How do you manage your knowledge base? What do you use for personal note taking to keep track of everything you learn? Are you always Googling or searching StackOverflow to answer the same questions? Or searching for and copying and pasting existing code? I feel like I have a poor memory, especially remembering things like syntax. Are there any knowledge management systems that would work well for a programming language or operating system? It would be great if there were a way to save everything I learn in an easy to search system. Does such a thing exist? Maybe you would be able to search by question (How to sort an array?, How to set static IP?), or by tag (sort, array, enumeration, iterator, IP). I know it would be easy to develop my own system, but I thought it would be great to learn what works for other people.

  Possible Duplicate: How to remove Ubuntu and put Windows back on? I have no idea what was deleted or uninstalled or even what system ran previously on the computer. The computers are public computers for an office and no one know's how to use this system! Most people can't figure it out and have never even heard of it (I have because I knew someone who ran it)!! So how do I remove it? Is there anyway to just do a virtual restore? I'm hoping it was windows 7 on here previously cause don't most 7 systems have a built in windows installation disk iso? Anyone know how or if this can be fixed?? No we don't have the re-installation disks (if we did I would know the system and not have a problem) HELP!!!!

But it doesn't work :( I've looked in EXSLT stylesheet and it has got the logic to do that. Also there is logic to display the name of the week for a day using 'E' pattern, which doesn't work for me.   I am using the below piece of XSL to select the id of the text nodes whose content has a given index. This index value in input will be relative to a spcified node whose id value is known. The criteria to select the text node is, The text node content should contain a index say 'i' relative to node say 'n' whose id value i know. 'i' and 'id of n' is got as index and nodeName from the input param as seen in the xsl. Node 'd1e5' has the text content whose index ranges from 1 to 33. • Better, simpler example of 'semantic conflict'?

  I like to distinguish three different types of conflict from a version control system (VCS): textual syntactic semantic A textual conflict is one that is detected by the merge or update process. This is flagged by the system. A commit of the result is not permitted by the VCS until the conflict is resolved. A syntactic conflict is not flagged by the VCS, but the result will not compile. Therefore this should also be picked up by even a slightly careful programmer. (A simple example might be a variable rename by Left and some added lines using that variable by Right. The merge will probably have an unresolved symbol. Alternatively, this might introduce a semantic conflict by variable hiding.) Finally, a semantic conflict is not flagged by the VCS, the result compiles, but the code may have problems running. In mild cases, incorrect results are produced. In severe cases, a crash could be introduced. Even these should be detected before commit by a very careful programmer, through either code review or unit testing. My example of a semantic conflict uses SVN (Subversion) and C++, but those choices are not really relevant to the essence of the question. So my question is as follows. Is there a simpler example than this? Is there a simple example where the compiled executable has a new crash? Does it have a solution or should I just choose to import from an excel sheet, thats better? • DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

  I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). A very similar issue is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-gaming/direct3d-acceleration-is-not-available-in-windows/4c345e6e-dc68-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?page=1 The proposed answer, which looks very promising, doesn't seem to work for me. Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping somebody knows the solution here! :) Here's what I see when I open dxdiag: DxDiag has detected that there mgiht have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used. • Coding With Windows Azure IaaS

  This post will focus on some advanced programming topics concerned with IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) which provided as windows azure virtual machine (with its related resources like virtual disk and virtual network), you know that windows azure started as PaaS cloud platform but regarding to some business cases which need to have full control over their virtual machine, so windows azure directed toward providing IaaS. Sometimes you will need to manage your cloud IaaS through code may be for these reasons: Working on hyper-cloud system by providing bursting connector to windows azure virtual machines Providing multi-tenant system which consume windows azure virtual machine Automated process on your on-premises or cloud service which need to utilize some virtual resources We are going to implement the following basic operation using C# code: List images Create virtual machine List virtual machines Restart virtual machine Delete virtual machine Before going to implement the above operations we need to prepare client side and windows azure subscription to communicate correctly by providing management certificate (x.509 v3 certificates) which permit client access to resources in your Windows Azure subscription, whilst requests made using the Windows Azure Service Management REST API require authentication against a certificate that you provide to Windows Azure More info about setting management certificate located here.
