• I can't get my Macbook Pro to print to an IP addressable printer

  Running Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.3 Accessing an HP OfficeJet 5610 plugged in the USB port of a US Robotics router. Driver: HP OfficeJet 5600 Series Whenever I try to print, it fails while saying "connected to printer" or "Printer is busy...zill try again in X seconds" Both Windows 7 and Windows XP computers on the network can successfully access this printer, identifying it as "HP5610 on http://192.168.1.10:1631/" I tried clearing all tasks and printers (ctrl-click in the menu), and resetting it to (socket, http://192.168.1.10:1631/printers/HP5610, HP5600 series) but to no success.

  I have a Windows 7 installation DVD that came with a computer with no optical drive. I have an empty USB thumb drive. I have access to two computers with optical drives, one running Linux and the other running Mac OS X. Notably, I do not have access to any Windows computer at this time. With the tools that I have, how can I create a thumb drive that I can boot with and install Windows 7? Do I have to look out for anything when making the ISO from the DVD (DRM or anything)? After the ISO is made, will UNetbootin work? How about dd?

• About C# objects and the possibilties it has

  As a novice programmer and I always wonder about c# capabilities. I know it is still early to judge that but all i want to know is can c# do complex stuffs or something outside windows OS. I think C# is a proprietary language (I don't know if I said that right) meaning you can't do it outside Visual Studio or Windows. Also you can't create your own controller (called object right?) like you are forced to use these available in toolbox and their properties and methods. Can C# be used with OpenGL API or DirectX API Finally it always bothers me when I think I start doing things in Visual Studio, I know it sounds arrogant to say but sometimes I feel that I don't like to be forced to use something even if its helpful, like I feel (do I have the right to feel?) that I want to do all things by myself? Don't laugh I just feel that this will give me a better understanding. Is Visual C# like using MaxScript inside 3ds max in that C# is exclusive to do Windows and Forms and Components that are Windows related and maxscript is only for 3d editing and manipulation for various things in the software. If it is too difficult for a beginner I hope you don't answer the fourth question as I don't have enough motivation and I want to keep the little I have. Note: Sorry for my English, I am self taught and never used the language with native speakers so expect so errors. I have a lot of questions regarding many things, what is the daily ratio you think for asking (number of questions) that would not bother the admins of the site and the members here. • Can I redeploy Citrix Xencenter Images in Amazon EC2?

  Okay - I'm running Citrix Xencenter in my datacenter. My understanding is that Amazon EC2 is a very customized flavor of Xencenter. Based on that, I would like to know whether there is a method to utilize the .VHD disk images generated by Citrix Xencenter in the Amazon EC2 cloud. I realize that I can install tools into the OS and make my own images but that is not what I'm looking for. I'd like the efficiency of taking the images and redeploying them, or at least converting then redeploying. I basically would like to have all my backups running in the cloud, so that is my motivation.

  i installed libxml2-2.9.0 and libxslt-1.1.27 then yum is broken any yum command that i ran i got the result of : There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. • Anything to share a printer from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows?

  I've got a printer which only has 32-bit drivers, so it's installed on a 32-bit machine (XP). I need it to appear as a printer (with duplex control etc) on a 64-bit machine (Vista). I can't just share it using Windows printer sharing because the 64-bit client requires drivers to connect to it. There's no 64-bit driver for a similar printer that works (using the new port named \\server\printername). I've tried the ghostscript approach but that doesn't seem to help with the duplex control etc. Printeranywhere doesn't support 64-bit OS yet. Is there another way to do this?

  I have iso image for Ubuntu 11.0.4 on a CD. My OS is windows XP. I have 3 partions c, E and F. Windows is installed on C, and F has data. E is empty drive. Now, after I start installation , I choose the third option. Then click forward and I am shown three figures -- /dev/sda1 52427(total)/50931(used) /dev/sda5 52427(total)/3221(used) -- surprised, since it should be empty. I had used wubi to install earlier but have uninstalled. /dev/sda5 215206(total)/37545(used) Now, it means I need to choose sda5. Now how should I go about creating 3 partions for /(root), /home and /swap. Click edit partion and give size for each of them?

• How do you passthrough native SATA drives to a guest on ESXi?

  I have ESXi 4.0 running on an Intel DX58S0 Mothboardboard with an Intel Core i7 930 processor. VT-d is also enabled. I have three drives in the system, drive 0 is used for ESXi. Drive 1 and 2 contain data from an older machine and show up under the "Storage Adapters" section in configuration. I would like to allow a guest machine to access the data on these drives (as nativly as possible). I have enabled passthrough of the motherboard's built in SATA controller (Intel/Marvell 88SE6121 ). This controller shows up in my guest OS, but the guest shows no drives aside from the normal virtual drive. I have tried a Linux guest and Windows7. I have also configured the host machine to try IDE/RAID/ACHI modes for the SATA controller. Any ideas how I can configure one of my guests to get at the raw data on these drives?

• When copying VM filesystem over netcat, dd copies double the disk size

  I'm attempting to copy the disk of a working headless virtualbox VM (VM1) on one server to a new VM (VM2) on a vCloud server. I don't have access to the host of VM2. The OS is Windows Server 2003 (32-bit) I start both VMs with a live Knoppix image. I run 'nc -l | dd of=/dev/sda bs=512' on VM2 I run 'dd if=/dev/sda bs=512 | nc ' on VM1 I previously did this with another windows VM and it worked fine. VM1 has a disk of size ~70GB (verified with fdisk); however, the amount of data dd reports read/written is ~139GB. Of course the target machine doesn't work properly. I get a Windows splash screen, then blue error screen with general 'system not working' information. I'm at a loss what could cause this. Any ideas?

• Can I format a USB key in GUID mode in windows 7 to make it Mac OSX boot friendly?

  I have a macbookpro that wont boot properly. I've tried resetting the PRAM (holding down option - alt - P - R), but it doesn't work, it gets halfway through the boot process and says "You need to restart your computer" in several languages. Recently I downloaded a USB Key compatible Linux OS. This USB Key works as a boot loader on Windows machines, but on OSX it can only find the Harddrive partitions when I go into the boot loader menu (holding down Option on startup). I am assuming it is because it is formatted as FAT32, and not GUID Table. I believe my CD drive is also bust, it hasn't worked in a long time. I don't have another Mac computer, so is there a way I can format the USB key as GUID Partition from a windows 7 machine?

  I know there are ways to share a folder across computers making it easy to move files. But I was wondering how one would setup a single login which lets you access the same files regardless of which machine you login on? What I would like is something similar to something you would see in a college campus where students login on machines in the lab and see their files regardless of which machine they use. I know there are server involved here. I have a need to create this on a smaller scale where we have a few computers available (and one of these could act as the server if needed and host the files) that every one shares. Note, the specific install of software might be different on each computer but the login and OS are the same. Since some computers have additional capability that our group members will need to use at rotating schedules (software licenses or hardware components, etc.). I have not done this before, so I would appreciate detailed instructions if possible or a reference to a guide that describes this. Thanks in advance.

• Same album repeatedly updates when syncing iTunes with iPhone

  I have many many albums and tracks purchased via the iTunes store both through iTunes directly and via the iPhone. They all synchronise properly and are on iTunes eventually (i.e. if purcashed originally on the iPhone). There's one album, though, purchased via the iTunes app in June this year. Virtually every time I sync the iPhone it says "updating files" and this album gets updated. The rest of the sync goes just fine, new tracks added, listened to podcasts are removed, playlists are updated (notwithstanding that smart playlists' orderings are now utterly broken) fine - but this album is always getting updated. In finder I've looked at the permissions and nothing seems unusual. FWIW, I'm on Mac OS X 10.5.8, iPhone 3.1.2, iTunes 9.02. Anyone with any ideas? It's not a fundamental problem, but it does means that each sync takes an extra 30-60 seconds, which is annoying!

  I'm having trouble installing Windows 7 onto my old laptop. The problem appears to be the laptop's DVD-ROM no longer seems to work. Sucks. So, I'm trying to figure out how to get a bootable USB with my Windows 7 DVD info onto it. I found this link here on superuser.com: http://superuser.com/questions/66948/place-a-bootable-iso-on-a-usb-drive That looks good, except for the detail about making the USB bootable. It said that the OS you're making it bootable on must be the same as the machine you're going to be installing it on. I can't do that. The machine I would make it bootable from is a 64-bit version of Windows 7. The target machine is 32-bit. So, how's this going to work?

• ESXi5 - management services crashes - vms running

  I have a setup with two ESXi5 servers. We are(were) running with a ISCSi box to server disk for the VM's - however we are in the progress of migrating away from it, because the storage os disk is bad. Now, one of the ESXi hosts has been running for ~20hrs, and it seems like the management services just crashed on that host.. The vms are still running - so it's not really serious. However, I want to fix it. Should I be worried? Will the VM's keep running? The hosts does respond on pings. I am running a vcenter to administrate the hosts. Thanks in advance.

  For the last two days, Outlook has decided it doesn't like URL's. Any email message that comes in containing an URL will show the following in an error dialogue message box when I click on the link: General Failure. The URL was: "http:/something.com/somewhere/". The parameter is incorrect If I copy the link into a browser, it works correctly. OS is Windows XP SP 3, Microsoft Office 2007 (Outlook), Internet Explorer 8 (also Chrome).   I have two computers networked through a Netgear WG914 router which is connected to an Ipstar satellite modem via the RG47 LAN connector. The main computer is running Windows 7 Pro 64bit and the secondary computer is running Windows 7 Home Edition 32bit. On occasion there is a loss of internet connection usually on the main computer, often followed by a loss on the secondary comuter. Not, however, always the case. Windows troubleshooter, naturally, is about as much use as a politician in government.......NONE. There appears to be no problem with the ISP bad as it is and often the connection will be remade without any help from me. The difference in the OS's is not of any relevance since I had this problem before I changed over to Windows 7. Not being a nerd when it comes to networking I wonder if anyone has any constructive suggestions.

  I run BIND locally on my OS X machine, to enable wildcard Apache vhosts, which requires setting the DNS server for all network interfaces to 127.0.0.1. This works great, but means when I am on a network which uses an internal DNS server to route special (i.e. .companyname) URLs to a server on the network, the lookup fails. I tried adding both 127.0.0.1 and the DHCP provided DNS server, but this doesn't work either. Is there a way to make BIND use the DHCP DNS server for requests it cannot resolve locally?

  Hi there, I've written a little utility in haXe + Neko that needs to execute some GIT commands. To avoid hardcoding the path to the GIT executable I'd like to use the which command to find out where it is. Everything works as expected when running manually from the console, but not when the the app runs on a cron job. I'm aware of the restricted environment (here or here) when you run a script using cron, but still surprised this doesn't work: /usr/bin/which git >> /home/user/git.txt The text file is created but the content is empty.   At my new job, I have a production server with the following qualities: Windows (XP I think), ancient hardware Absolutely vital database No backups whatsoever Everyone in the company has full admin rights, the passwords are stored in a .txt on the global share No installers, except for the OS The machine itself is sitting on a wooden shelf 5 feet above the ground against an external wall with frequent truck traffic on the other side; the shelf is already bent from the constant load Hasn't been rebooted in $DEITY knows how long, my predecessor wasn't even sure if it would survive it UPS is installed, but since everything is hooked up to it, it would last 10 minutes tops No spare parts or hardware budget How do I make a full backup with minimal impact on the server? I'm not sure how close it is to a total meltdown. For all I know, plugging in a USB stick could kill the company, and of course it will be all my fault, since "it was running fine before you touched it". The ideal solution would be a VM, so I have a test environment as well (separate of course).

  I am using Linux mint OS since an Year , I use to consistently download updates and install , I use chrome as a default browser , when ever I open youtube and watch some video , I listen to some gestures in sound ( say repeated lyrics of song ) while it is playing , In firefox it is working fine . What is the problem am I missing any plugin , AFAIK Chrome doesn't need a flash player plug in , It has a built in flash player . IS that the problem ? • Ubuntu 14.04 says insufficient memory in my /boot memory alocation while updating

  I am new to Linux platform. I just tried installing Ubuntu alongside windows but allocated only 200 mb to the /boot partition which is not recommended. Now Ubuntu software update keep on insists me no enough space. What should I do? Is there any way to increase my /boot partition without removing the total OS? Or should I completely uninstall Ubuntu and put it back? Please anyone suggest me over this issue. I have no idea what to do. And please be elaborate, as I am new to Linux environment.

• MySQL documentation writer for MEM and Replication wanted!

  As MySQL is thriving and growing, we're looking for an experienced technical writer located in the UK or Ireland to join the MySQL documentation team. For this job, we need the best and most dedicated people around. You will be part of a geographically distributed documentation team responsible for the technical documentation of all MySQL products. Team members are expected to work independently, requiring discipline and excellent time-management skills as well as the technical facilities and experience to communicate across the Internet. Candidates should be prepared to work intensively with our engineers and support personnel. The overall team is highly distributed across different geographies and time zones. Our source format is DocBook XML. We're not just writing documentation, but also handling publication. This means you should be familiar with DocBook, and willing to learn our publication infrastructure. Your areas of responsibility would initially be MySQL Enterprise Monitor, and MySQL Replication. This means you should be familiar with MySQL in general, and preferably also with the MySQL Enterprise offerings. A MySQL certification will be considered an advantage. Other qualifications you should have: Native English speaker 5 or more years previous experience in writing software documentation Familiarity with distributed working environments and versioning systems such as SVN Comfortable with working on multiple operating systems, particularly Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux Ability to administer own workstations and test environment Excellent written and oral communication skills Ability to provide (online) samples of your work, e.g. books or articles If you're interested, contact me under [email protected].
