• How to make custom libraries accessible?

  I am trying to compile and install every custom module under it's own designated folder. (ex: /myApps/myLinux/compiled_app) I had luck with python so far, where my python is compiled from source and lives in: /myApps/myLinux/python2.5 and "python2.5" - /myApps/myLinux/python2.5.6-gcc463 so I can access this python through a wrapper script that sets the right environment. The question is recently I had to compile and add something called gperf3.0.4. So now it lives: /myApps/myLinux/gperf3.0 and "gperf3.0" - /myApps/myLinux/gperf3.0.4-gcc463 The question is: How will I point to this lib if some other app needs to access it? Is it done through the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable? Thanks.

• Is type safety worth the trade-offs?

  I began coding in in Python primarily where there is no type safety, then moved to C# and Java where there is. I found that I could work a bit more quickly and with less headaches in Python, but then again, my C# and Java apps are at much higher level of complexity so I have never given Python a true stress test I suppose. The Java and C# camps make it sound like without the type safety in place, most people would be running into all sorts of horrible bugs left an right and it would be more trouble than its worth. This is not a language comparison, so please do not address issues like compiled vs interpreted. Is type safety worth the hit to speed of development and flexibilty? WHY? to the people who wanted an example of the opinion that dynamic typing is faster: "Use a dynamically typed language during development. • What's shell script's advantage over interpreted programming languages?

  (I'm not sure if it's a appropriate question here) Shell script, like bash, can do many things. It can call Unix programs, pipe their output, redirect I/O from/to files, control flow, check whether a file exists, etc. But a modern programming language, e.g, python and ruby, can also do these all. And their are (I think) more readable and maintainable. bash is worldwide spreaded. But many distributions have installed python interpreter, too. So what's the advantage of shell script? If I could write python, ruby or perl, is it worth to learn bash?

• How to choose a language, when taking in account the community it includes?

  I was reading the following article: Great Hackers The following part grabbed my attention: "When you choose a language, you're also choosing a community. The programmers you'll be able to hire to work on a Java project won't be as smart as the ones you could get to work on a project written in Python. And the quality of your hackers probably matters more than the language you choose. Though, frankly, the fact that good hackers prefer Python to Java should tell you something about the relative merits of those languages." I would like to apply his advice on a commercial web application I am building (I am a strong believer in culture and community), yet this article was written in 2004, and python has increased in popularity in the recent years. How can I decided a language when taking in consideration its community, rather than the popularity? Any recommendations? Is there any language community that show dedication and passion for developing, rather than learning a language to get a Job and a paycheck?

• What is a *slightly* less extreme equivalent to being "fluent" in a language?

  tl;dr: What is a less extreme (but still noticeable) alternative to the word "fluent", when saying e.g. "I am fluent in C++/Python/whatever?" I think I can call myself "fluent" in C#, because I know the language and runtime very well, and I'm very familiar with the .NET framework's APIs and classes, etc. I would like to claim the same thing for Python and C++. But while I can program in Python (I did so for an entire summer, making a website with Django), for example, I would not call myself fluent because my code isn't always "Pythonic" (e.g. using map/filter vs. list comprehensions), and I'm not too intimate with some aspects of the language and standard library yet (e.g. the introspection API, etc.). Is there a word or phrase I can use on e.g. a resume to describe what I know? I can think of "very familiar with", but is there a better word/phrase I can use?

I'm still a novice (I've been doing it for about a year), so the majority of my code pertains to only two fields (GUI design in Python and basic algorithms in C/C++). I have become intrigued with how the actual languages themselves are written. I mean this in both senses. Such as how it was literally written (ie, what language the language was written in). As well as various features like white spacing (Python) or object orientation (C++ and Python). Where would one start learning how to write a language? What are some of the fundamentals of language design, things that would make it a "complete" language?

• How can the little guys effectively learn and use puppet?

  Six months ago, in our not-for-profit project we decided to start migrating our system management to a Puppet controlled environment because we are expecting our number of servers to grow substantially between now and a year from now. Since the decision has been made our IT guys have become a bit too annoyed a bit too often. Their biggest objections are: "We're not programmers, we're sysadmins"; Modules are available online but many differ from one another; wheels are being reinvented too often, how do you decide which one fits the bill; Code in our repo is not transparent enough, to find how something works they have to recurse through manifests and modules they might have even written themselves a while ago; One new daemon requires writing a new module, conventions have to be similar to other modules, a difficult process; "Let's just run it and see how it works" Tons of hardly known 'extensions' in community modules: 'trocla', 'augeas', 'hiera'... how can our sysadmins keep track? I can see why a large organisation would dispatch their sysadmins to puppet courses to become puppet masters. But how would smaller players get to learn puppet to a professional level if they do not go to courses and basically learn it via their browser and editor?

  Hello, This is how I have setup my environment, atm. An apache2 instance on port 80. Jetty instance on the same server, on port 8090. Use-Case: When I visit foo.com, I should see the webapp, which is hosted on jetty, port 8090. If I put foo.com/blog, I should see the wordpress blog, which is hosted on apache. (I read howtos on the web, and installed it using AMP.) Below are my various configuration files: /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/proxy.conf: ProxyPass / http://foo.com:8090/ << this is the jetty server ProxyPass /blog http://foo.com/blog ProxyRequests On ProxyVia On <Proxy *> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Proxy> ProxyPreserveHost On ProxyStatus On /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: LoadModule proxy_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_proxy.so LoadModule proxy_balancer_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_proxy_balancer.so LoadModule proxy_http_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_proxy_http.so LoadModule proxy_ajp_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_proxy_ajp.so I have not created any other files, in sites-available or sites-enabled. The proxy server could not handle the request GET /blog. Reason: Error reading from remote server I also cannot access /phpmyadmin, giving the same 404 NOT_FOUND error as above. I am running Debian squeeze on an Amazon EC2 Instance. Question: Where am I going wrong? What changes should I make in the proxy.conf (or another conf files) to be able to visit the blog?

• dovecot login issue with plain passwords

• Debugging apache seg fault with gdb

  Apache on a production server of mine is seg faulting intermittently. I have enabled core dump option in apache configuration and have several dumped core files. Unfortunately, since it is a production server, apache or the loaded modules are not compiled with debug symbols. From what I understand, gdb cannot do much without debug symbols. Can I at least find out which module is causing the seg fault, without debug symbols? If so, how? • Removing HttpModule for specific path in ASP.NET / IIS 7 application?

  Most succinctly, my question is whether an ASP.NET 4.0 app running under IIS 7 integrated mode should be able to honor this portion of my Web.config file: <location path="auth/windows"> <system.webServer> <modules> <remove name="FormsAuthentication"/> </modules> </system.webServer> </location> I'm experimenting with mixed mode authentication (Windows and Forms). Using IIS Manager, I've disabled Anonymous authentication to auth/windows/winauth.aspx, which is within the location path above. I have Failed Request Tracing set up to trace various HTTP status codes, including 302s. When I request the winauth.aspx page, a 302 HTTP status code is returned. If I look at the request trace, I can see that a 401 (unauthorized) was originally generated by the AnonymousAuthenticationModule. However, the FormsAuthenticationModule converts that to a 302, which is what the browser sees. So it seems as though my attempt to remove that module from the pipeline for pages in that path isn't working. But I'm not seeing any complaints anywhere (event viewer, yellow pages of death, etc.) that would indicate it's an invalid configuration. I want the 401 returned to the browser, which presumably would include an appropriate WWW-Authenticate header. A few other points: a) I do have <authentication mode="Forms"> in my Web.config, and that is what the 302 redirects to; b) I got the "name" of the module I'm trying to remove from the inetserv\config\applicationHost.config file; c) I have this element in my Web.config file: <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="false">; d) I tried a <location> element for the path in which I set the authentication mode to "None", but that gave a yellow exception page that the property can't be set below the application level. Anyone had any luck removing modules in this fashion?

• Cloned Centos 6.4 websrver for test purpose. Virtual host, .htaccess, redirecting url issue

  I see similar questions, but not my exact challenge. What I have done so far I cloned a prod server over to a vmware to use it as a test server for new functionality I'm going to write. I'm not a sysadmin by trade, but I'm new to this company and I have to do some thing that are outside of my comfort zone (thats a good thing :) ) The prod server has 2 sites on it s1.com and s2.com. In /html/s1/, /html/s2/ there's an .htaccess file under each s*/. Looking like this: RewriteEngine ON RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} id=([0-9]+) RewriteRule ^.* %1.htm RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} page=modules/checkout RewriteRule ^.* order.php RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} page=pages/sidekart RewriteRule ^.* pages/sidekart.htm The issue is that s1 has a lot of pages that really belongs under a third domain s3, the rule in line 4 and 5 redirects them to /html/s1/. An example of such URL is: s3.com/?page=modules/product&id=521614 I'm trying then to get those URLs (without modifying the URL) to redirect to s3's /html/s3/ server structure, which I set up making a new virtualhost s3 in test servers httpd.conf with a test3.com as servername and changing the other sites to tests1.com and tests2.com, and adding .htaccess also to this s3 root directory, and making a html/s3/ directory structure I populated with an index.html, etc. But, when I take the same URL (s3.com/?page=modules/product&id=521614) changing it to tests3.com/?page=modules/product&id=521614, I get s1's index page showing up in my browser. I've poked around about a day now and i cant figure out why this happens.

  Trying to deploy a JSF 2 app with Spring 3.1 + JPA 2 (Hibernte 3.6.8) into JBoss 7.1.1 AS. The app was working fine on tomcat 7. Now, I have already added and changed some configurations. Added jboss-deployment-structure.xml <jboss-deployment-structure xmlns="urn:jboss:deployment-structure:1.1"> <deployment> <exclusions> <module name="org.apache.log4j" /> <module name="javax.faces.api" slot="main"/> <module name="com.sun.jsf-impl" slot="main"/> <module name="org.hibernate"/> <module name="org.javassist" /> <module name="javaee.api" /> <module name="org.hibernate.validator" /> <module name="org.jboss.as.web" /> <module name="org.jboss.logging" /> <module name="javax.persistence.api" /> <module name="org.jboss.interceptor" /> </exclusions> </deployment> </jboss-deployment-structure> 2. • Mixing Forms and Token Authentication in a single ASP.NET Application (the Details)

  The scenario described in my last post works because of the design around HTTP modules in ASP.NET. Authentication related modules (like Forms authentication and WIF WS-Fed/Sessions) typically subscribe to three events in the pipeline – AuthenticateRequest/PostAuthenticateRequest for pre-processing and EndRequest for post-processing (like making redirects to a login page). In the pre-processing stage it is the modules’ job to determine the identity of the client based on incoming HTTP details (like a header, cookie, form post) and set HttpContext.User and Thread.CurrentPrincipal. The actual page (in the ExecuteHandler event) “sees” the identity that the last module has set. So in our case there are three modules in effect: FormsAuthenticationModule (AuthenticateRequest, EndRequest) WSFederationAuthenticationModule (AuthenticateRequest, PostAuthenticateRequest, EndRequest) SessionAuthenticationModule (AuthenticateRequest, PostAuthenticateRequest) So let’s have a look at the different scenario we have when mixing Forms auth and WS-Federation. Anoymous request to unprotected resource This is the easiest case. Since there is no WIF session cookie or a FormsAuth cookie, these modules do nothing. The WSFed module creates an anonymous ClaimsPrincipal and calls the registered ClaimsAuthenticationManager (if any) to transform it. The result (by default an anonymous ClaimsPrincipal) gets set. Anonymous request to FormsAuth protected resource This is the scenario where an anonymous user tries to access a FormsAuth protected resource for the first time. The principal is anonymous and before the page gets rendered, the Authorize attribute kicks in. The attribute determines that the user needs authentication and therefor sets a 401 status code and ends the request. Now execution jumps to the EndRequest event, where the FormsAuth module takes over. The module then converts the 401 to a redirect (302) to the forms login page. If authentication is successful, the login page sets the FormsAuth cookie.   FormsAuth authenticated request to a FormsAuth protected resource Now a FormsAuth cookie is present, which gets validated by the FormsAuth module. This cookie gets turned into a GenericPrincipal/FormsIdentity combination. The WS-Fed module turns the principal into a ClaimsPrincipal and calls the registered ClaimsAuthenticationManager. The outcome of that gets set on the context. Anonymous request to STS protected resource This time the anonymous user tries to access an STS protected resource (a controller decorated with the RequireTokenAuthentication attribute). The attribute determines that the user needs STS authentication by checking the authentication type on the current principal. If this is not Federation, the redirect to the STS will be made. After successful authentication at the STS, the STS posts the token back to the application (using WS-Federation syntax). Postback from STS authentication After the postback, the WS-Fed module finds the token response and validates the contained token. If successful, the token gets transformed by the ClaimsAuthenticationManager, and the outcome is a) stored in a session cookie, and b) set on the context. STS authenticated request to an STS protected resource This time the WIF Session authentication module kicks in because it can find the previously issued session cookie. The module re-hydrates the ClaimsPrincipal from the cookie and sets it.     FormsAuth and STS authenticated request to a protected resource This is kind of an odd case – e.g. the user first authenticated using Forms and after that using the STS. This time the FormsAuth module does its work, and then afterwards the session module stomps over the context with the session principal. In other words, the STS identity wins.   What about roles? A common way to set roles in ASP.NET is to use the role manager feature. There is a corresponding HTTP module for that (RoleManagerModule) that handles PostAuthenticateRequest. Does this collide with the above combinations? No it doesn’t! When the WS-Fed module turns existing principals into a ClaimsPrincipal (like it did with the FormsIdentity), it also checks for RolePrincipal (which is the principal type created by role manager), and turns the roles in role claims. Nice! But as you can see in the last scenario above, this might result in unnecessary work, so I would rather recommend consolidating all role work (and other claims transformations) into the ClaimsAuthenticationManager. In there you can check for the authentication type of the incoming principal and act accordingly. HTH

• Multiple Audio Issues

  I am having issues with my audio on Ubuntu 12.04, I will try and give as much detail as possible so sorry if there's too much detail. The Problem Audio plays from both speakers and headphone regardless of what connector I choose and regardless of the profile I use. The microphone is constantly being played through headphones & speakers. The headphone audio is extremely quiet but plays from both ears when I select "Headphones" for the connector in Sound Settings. The headphone audio only plays from one ear and is quiet (but not as quiet as above) when I select "Analogue Output" for the connector in Sound Settings. I can only select "Headphones" as the connector in Sound Settings if I set the profile to either "Analogue Stereo Output/Duplex", all others only allow me to choose "Analogue Output" for the connector. Despite the headphone sound issues, the speaker sound is fine apart from the fact that I am not able to select which output is used, they just both play. My headphone and microphone are plugged into the front and my speakers are plugged into the back. What I have tried I have put everything in alsamixer to 100 apart from "Front Mic Boost" which I have set to 0. • Suspend not working after kernel update on an HP Envy14 1050

  I just update ubuntu 12.04 to the kernel 3.2.0-30 and together with it a lot of packeges in the system. I am running it on an HP Envy14 1050. When I first made a fresh install of the clean ubuntu 12.04 I had the problem that when restoring from suspend the screen was black, although some backlight was there. I could fix it following this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/989674/comments/20. Now, after the update the black screen after suspend has reappeared but with no backlight at all and the led in the caps lock key blinking. The laptop is using a ATI radeon 5600 with the privative drivers. During the update process there was an error with depmod . You can see the /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt-term.log file at the end. UPDATE: suspend is not working at all. The problem is not when restoring from suspend, but when I try to suspend the system it gets blocked and the fan running. Only option is to press power button. • Educational, well-written FOSS projects to read, study or discuss

  Before you say it: yes, this "question" has been asked other times. However, I could not fine many of such questions and not that easily, and those I found had similar results. What I'm trying to say that there are no comprehensive lists of well written Open Source projects, so I decided to set some requirements for the entries (one or possibly more): Idiomatic use of the language in which they are written The project should be lightweight. Not as in "a few kbs", as in "clean" and possibly following the UNIX philosophy, making an efficient use of resources and performing its duty and nothing more. No code bloat, most importantly. Projects like Firefox and GNOME wouldn't qualify, for example. Minimal reliance on external, non-standard libraries, with exceptions for some common FOSS libraries (curses, Xlib, OpenGL and possibly "usual suspects" like gtk+, webkit and Boost). Reliance on well-written libraries is welcome. No reliance on proprietary software - for obvious reasons (programs that rely on XNA, DirectX, Cocoa and similar, for example). Well-documented code is welcome. Include link to web interfaces to their repositories if possible. Here are some sample projects that often pop up in these threads: Operating Systems Plan 9 from Bell Labs: More or less, the official "sequel" to UNIX. Written in C by the same people who invented C! NetBSD: The most portable BSD implementation, written in C and also a good example of portable and organized code. Network and Databases Sqlite: Extremely lightweight and extremely efficient, one of the best pieces of C software I've seen. Count the lines yourself! Lighttpd: A small but pretty reliable web server written in C. Programming languages and VMs Lua: extremely lightweight multi-paradigm programming language. Written in C. Tiny C Compiler: Really tiny C compiler. Not really comparable to GCC or Clang but does its job. PyPy: A Python implementation written in Python. Pharo: OK, I admit it, I'm not really a Smalltalk expert but Pharo is a fork of Squeak and looked rather interesting. Stackless Python - An implementation of Python that doesn't rely on the C call stack - written in C (with some parts in Python) Games and 3D: Angband: One of the most accessible roguelike codebases around here, written in C. Ogre3D: Cross-platform 3D engine. Gets bloated if you don't skip the platform-specific implementation code, otherwise is a pretty solid example of good C++ OO. Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection: Title says it all. Other - dwm: Lightweight window manager. Written in C. Emulation and Reverse Engineering - Bochs: x86 emulator, written in C++ and tiny enough. - MAME: If you want to see C at one of its lowest levels, MAME is for you. May not be as clean as the other projects but it can teach you A LOT. Before you ask: I didn't mention Linux because it has become quite bloated in the last few years, Linus has also confirmed it. Nonetheless, it'd be a great educational read the same, even if for other reasons. Same for GCC. Feel free to edit or wikify my post.   I am using Fedora 12, with kernel stv-fedora 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686 I have install VirtualBox OSE v3.1.4-1.fc12. When I start VirtualBox I get the following error: Failed to start the virtual machine WinXP32. Failed to open/create the internal network 'HostInterfaceNetworking-eth0' (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND). One of the kernel modules was not successfully loaded. Make sure that no kernel modules from an older version of VirtualBox exist. Then try to recompile and reload the kernel modules by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND). However, if I run /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup I get this error: -bash: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: No such file or directory How do I get rid of the error and run VirtualBox?
