• How do I copy a JavaScript object into another object?

  Say I want to start with a blank JavaScript object: me = {}; And then I have an array: me_arr = new Array(); me_arr['name'] = "Josh K"; me_arr['firstname'] = "Josh"; Now I want to throw that array into the object so I can use me.name to return Josh K. I tried: for(var i in me_arr) { me.i = me_arr[i]; } But this didn't have the desired result. Is this possible? My main goal is to wrap this array in a JavaScript object so I can pass it to a PHP script (via AJAX or whatever) as JSON.

• Remove redundant CSS rules

  I have several CSS files all being used in a large application; most are legacy, with one "main" css file that is the most current. This setup came about after a rebranding, and instead of redoing all of the CSS, we simply added a new CSS file that would override the rules from the legacy files. So now, I'd like to distill all of this CSS (1000's of lines) into 1 file. NOTE: I don't want to simply combine the files (as in copy/pasting them all into 1 file); I need an application to semi-intelligently look at the rules, reduce them down to only the effective rules (after inheritance), but I can't find anything like that. Example; given: /* legacy.css */ .foo { color: red; margin: 5px; } ..and: /* current.css */ .foo { margin: 10px; } I need a tool to output: /* result.css */ .foo { color: red; margin: 10px; } Does such an application exist?

• Why are listener lists Lists?

  Why are listener lists (e.g. in Java those that use addXxxListener() and removeXxxListener() to register and unregister listeners) called lists, and usually implemented as Lists? Wouldn't a Set be a better fit, since in the case of listeners there's No matter in which order they get called (although there may well be such needs, but they're special cases; ordinary listener mechanisms make no such guarantees), and No need to register the same listener more than once (whether doing that should result in calling the same listener 1 times or N times, or be an error, is another question) Is it just a matter of tradition? Sets are some kind of lists under the hood anyway. Are there performance differences? Is iterating through a List faster or slower than iterating through a Set? Does either take more or less memory? The differences are certainly almost negligible.

  I'm getting memory leak with UIImagePickerController class. Here's how I'm using it: UIImagePickerController *picker = [[UIImagePickerController alloc] init]; picker.delegate = self; picker.sourceType = UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypePhotoLibrary; [self presentModalViewController:picker animated:YES]; [picker release]; To remove the picker i call [picker dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES]; in didFinishPickingImage and imagePickerControllerDidCancel. -- Instruments show around 160bytes leaking as a result of this instruction: +[UIImagePickerController _loadPhotoLibraryIfNecessary] Apparently this issue has and is disturbing many people, and solution to avoid this problem is to build a singleton class dedicated for picking images from library or capturing using device's build in camera. Anyone want to add something?

• How do I share a WiX fragment in two WiX projects?

  We have a WiX fragment in a file SomeDialog.wxs that prompts the user for some information. It's referenced in another fragment in InstallerUI.wxs file that controls the dialog order. Of course, Product.wxs is our main file. Works great. Now I have a second Visual Studio 2008 Wix 3.0 Project for the .MSI of another application and it needs to ask the user for the same information. I can't seem to figure out the best way to share the file so that changing the information requested will result in both .MSIs getting the new behavior. I honestly can't tell if a merge module, an .wsi (include) or a .wixlib is the right solution. I would have hoped to find a simple example of someone doing this but I have failed thus far. Edit: Based on Rob Mensching's wixlib blog entry, a wixlib may be the answer, but I am still searching for an example of how to do this.

• Hibernate list operation question

  I'm working on a utility to update a list of entities in a database as a group. The database contains a list of entities. The result of the update is a new list. The API accepts this new list. The update may end up modifying some of the entities in the list, creating new ones and deleting some. So at the entity level, I may have to do any of an insert, delete or update operation. But it's always true that the final list in the database will be the same as the list passed down to the API. Is there in Hibernate a way to treat this operation at the list level, that is, tell Hibernate to persist this list of entities, and let it take care of which need to be created, updated or deleted? There is no entity/table representing this list, btw. Just the entities themselves in a table.

  I want to use Fabric to deploy my web app code to development, staging and production servers. Please specify (single) host string for connection: When I create a set_hosts() task as shown in the Fabric docs, env.hosts is set properly. However, this is not a viable option, neither is a decorator. Passing hosts on the command line would ultimately result in some kind of shell script that calls the fabfile, I would prefer having one single tool do the job properly. It says in the Fabric docs that 'env.hosts is simply a Python list object'. From my observations, this is simply not true. Can anyone explain what is going on here ? How can I set the host to deploy to ?

I.e., 2.2.12 is greater than 2.2.7, and 2.3.15 is greater than 2.3.9, etc. Unfortunately, I can't think of an easy way to do that without using CHARINDEX or some complicated other split-like logic. Running this query: SELECT MAX(Version) FROM my_table will yield the erroneous result: 2.3.9 When it should really be 2.3.15. Any bright ideas that don't get too complex?

• How to mask tilde (~) character in C# MVC routing table?

  I'm moving my home-baked web site to MVC and got the trouble with url routing. The site already serves several links that contain tilde (~) character in the path; something like http://.../~files/... http://.../~ws/... and I want each of them are handled by separate controller, like filesController, wsController, so my route table looks like routes.MapRoute( "files", "~files/{*prms}", new { controller = "files", action = "index", prms = "" } ); routes.MapRoute( "ws", "~ws/{*prms}", new { controller = "ws", action = "index", prms = "" } ); ... but when I try to get the result I got the error saying "The route URL cannot start with a '/' or '~' character and it cannot contain a '?' character." As I understand those characters have the special meaning in ASP.net but is it possible to mask them somehow, at least tilde? Should I parse and route requests like this myself? What the best practice to handle urls like this? Thanks!

  Hello, I've recently been bitten by the (way too commmon in my opinion) gotcha of Concat returns it's result, rather than appending to the list itself. For instance. List<Control> mylist=new List<Control>; //.... after adding Controls into mylist MyPanel.Controls.Concat(mylist); //This will not affect MyPanel.Controls at all. MyPanel.Controls=MyPanel.Controls.Concat(mylist); //This is what is needed, but the Controls reference can not be reassigned (for good reason) So is there some other way of combining two lists that will work when the collection reference is read-only? Is the only way to do this with a foreach? foreach(var item in mylist){ MyPanel.Controls.Add(item); } Is there a better way without the foreach?

Sometimes it's very useful to be to fetch data stored on your remote server simply by invoking netcat with some shell kung fu, for example: To download the XML result of your nightly data crunching job you might run something like: echo "get 95ec6c7693ec53771c8a3fb1061562b8" | nc localhost 11211 > console_overview_06_04_2010.xml The interesting part here is get SOME_UNIQUE_KEY which is part of the memcached protocol.   I have a project I'm looking to manually manage via perforce version control as I only have the Express edition. What I'm looking for is which files should be excluded in the version control as locking many of the files can result in a problem for visual studio compiling and debugging. What I have, so far, included. .cs files (except properties folder) .resx files .csproj files Excluded bin folder obj folder Properties folder .user file Let me know if there is something more that should be included that I have excluded or if there is a better way to do this.

I want to see the generated SQL and after reading this answer, I use LinqPad. How can I see the generated SQL if LINQPad fails?

• How to debug a tcl script which is argument to an executable?

  I have a application which takes tcl script as argument. I want to debug tcl script when the application processes it. My development environment consists of Dynamic Languages Toolkit from www.eclipse.org/dltk along with Active state remote debugger -dbgp_tcldebug. I am able to debug the individual tcl scripts with this setup. I created a tcl project in eclipse and added 'startup.tcl' and 'argumentScript.tcl' scripts and added following command to the startup script, set ExecutableName "xyz.exe" set returnValue [catch {eval exec $ExecutableName "argumentScript.tcl" } result] My debugger works fine with 'startup.tcl' script. I added the breakpoint in 'argumentScript.tcl' but it is not working. How can I debug the "argumentScript.tcl" script ? Edit: A solution without using eclipse environment is Tcl Dev Kit with remote debugging feature.

• UINavigationController inside UINavigationController view issue

  I have two navigationcontrollers a main one and a sub one. The sub one is displaying inside the main one, which I am also hiding its navigationbar. as a result I am having some weird issues (things inside the view are being pushed down exactly the height of the navigationbar i am hiding) with the stuff I am displaying on the inside of the sub navigationcontroller. it looks like this. The left view is what I am doing in interface builder and the resulting view in the simulator. any help would be greatly appreciated. UPDATE: Here is the view with the subnav bar turned on so you can see the structure of my view. and here is the same view with the subnav turned off... can you see how the A is still sitting lower than it should be.. wel I think its because of the main navbar now as the whole subnavbar sits inside this view.. If I try to draw a line with the same semitransparent color, it works perfectly. I was thinking it may be that SolidBrush does not support transparency, but I found a predefined brush named Transparent (Brushes.Transparent) that was a SolidBrush when I looked at it in debug. I tried to use Brushes.Transparent as the brush when drawing the text, and it was successfully not showing at all. That means I get full transparency to work, but not partial transparency.

But imagine I'd like to pass the resulting string of $2 into a function, which returns another value. I tried doing this, but instead of getting the string "test", I get "$2". The documentation says that this method returns a View object, but in this example the author does not store the result anywhere. After inflation, how is the new View created fromt eh XML associated with this class? I thought about assigning it to "this", but that seems very wrong. thanks for any clarification.

  Just a quick question. Is there any performance difference between using PDO::fetchAll() and PDO::fetch() in a loop (for large result sets)? I'm fetching into objects of a user-defined class, if that makes any difference. My initial uneducated assumption was that fetchAll might be faster because PDO can perform multiple operations in one statement while mysql_query can only execute one. However I have little knowledge of PDO's inner workings and the documentation doesn't say anything about this, and whether or not fetchAll() is simply a PHP-side loop dumped into an array. Any help?

What I'm trying to do is take a UIImage and add a shadow to it, then return a whole new UIImage, shadow and all.   I'm designing and currently rethinking a low-level interpreted programming language with similarities to assembler. I very soon came across the functions/loops/gotos decision problem and thought that while loops like while and for would be too high-level and unfitting, gotos would be too low level, unmaintainable and generally evil again. Functions like you know them from most languages that have return values and arguments aren't fitting in the language's concept either. So I tried to figure out something between a function and a goto which is capable of Recursion Efficient loops After some thinking I came up with the idea of subroutines: They have a beginning and an end like a function They have a name but no arguments like a goto You can go into one with jump and go out of it again before its end with return (doesn't give back any result, only stops the subroutine) Handled just like normal code - Global scope like goto So I wanted to know: Is the idea above good? What are the (dis)advantages? Would there be a better combination of function and goto or even a completely new idea?

• Why is SwiftMailer throwing "Internal Server Error"?

  I am using Symfony + SwiftMailer and getting the following error from SwiftMailer: 500 | Internal Server Error | Swift_TransportException Expected response code 220 but got code "", with message "" and can't figure out why. I am using hMailServer on my local machine, and have setup my factories.yml file (as I'm using Symfony) as follows: mailer: class: sfMailer param: logging: %SF_LOGGING_ENABLED% charset: %SF_CHARSET% delivery_strategy: realtime transport: class: Swift_SmtpTransport param: host: splodge.loc port: 25 encryption: ~ username: ~ password: ~ I'm using the following code to send: $message = $this->getMailer()->compose( '[email protected]', '[email protected]', 'Reset Password', 'Message' ); $result = $this->getMailer()->send($message); Has anyone had an issue like this before? I have found that sometimes, and very randomly, the send goes through, but every other time, I get the above error message. So constantly refreshing the page that sends the mail, fails unpredictably, and as the code sometimes works, it's kinda hard to figure out what's wrong. Any help will be highly appreciated!

• Determine the width of the vertical scroll bar in a ScrollViewer

  I'm using a ScrollViewer to display an Image. The Image has a ScaleTransform set as one of it's LayoutTransforms. I've got it setup to fit the width of the image into the ActualSize of the ScrollViewer. My problem is that if the image height requires the vertical scrollbar to be present (I have it set to Auto) then my image is scaled just a little bit to much. I know how to determine if the scrollbar would be present and how to get the correct scale, but I cannot figure out how to determine what the actual width of the scrollbar is. I guess I could just guess at it, but I'd like something that would work if I later add styles to my application that would result in the scrollbars being a different size. Additionally I'm also doing Fit to Height and would need to get the Height of the horizontal scrollbar when it would be visible (I'm assuming that the answer to getting the width of the vertical scrollbar would make getting the height of the horizontal scrollbar obvious).
