  • Accessing Active Directory Role Membership through LDAP using SQL Server 2005

    I would like to get a list of Active Directory users along with the security groups they are members of using SQL Server 2005 linked servers. I have the query working to retrieve records but I'm not sure how to access the memberOf attribute (it is a multi-value LDAP attribute). I have this temporary to store the information: DROP TABLE #ADUSERGROUPS CREATE TABLE #ADUSERGROUPS ( sAMAccountName varchar(30), UserGroup varchar(50) ) Each group/user association should be one row. This is my SELECT statement: SELECT sAMAccountName,memberOf FROM OpenQuery(ADSI, '<LDAP://hqdc04/DC=nt,DC=avs>; (&(objectClass=User)(sAMAccountName=9695)(sn=*)(mail=*)(userAccountControl=512)); sAMAccountName,memberOf;subtree') I get this error msg: OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'ADSDSOObject' IRowset::GetData returned 0x40eda: Data status returned from the provider: [COLUMN_NAME=memberOf STATUS=DBSTATUS_E_CANTCONVERTVALUE], [COLUMN_NAME=sAMAccountName STATUS=DBSTATUS_S_OK]]. Msg 7346, Level 16, State 2, Line 2 Could not get the data of the row from the OLE DB provider 'ADSDSOObject'. Could not convert the data value due to reasons other than sign mismatch or overflow.

  • What is the best database structure for this scenario?

    I have a database that is holding real estate MLS (Multiple Listing Service) data. Currently, I have a single table that holds all the listing attributes (price, address, sqft, etc.). There are several different property types (residential, commercial, rental, income, land, etc.) and each property type share a majority of the attributes, but there are a few that are unique to that property type. My question is the shared attributes are in excess of 250 fields and this seems like too many fields to have in a single table. My thought is I could break them out into an EAV (Entity-Attribute-Value) format, but I've read many bad things about that and it would make running queries a real pain as any of the 250 fields could be searched on. If I were to go that route, I'd literally have to pull all the data out of the EAV table, grouped by listing id, merge it on the application side, then run my query against the in memory object collection. This also does not seem very efficient. I am looking for some ideas or recommendations on which way to proceed. Perhaps the 250+ field table is the only way to proceed. Just as a note, I'm using SQL Server 2012, .NET 4.5 w/ Entity Framework 5, C# and data is passed to asp.net web application via WCF service. Thanks in advance.

    I recently got following email from one of the reader. Hi Pinal, Even thought my database is in full recovery mode when I try to take log backup I am getting following error. BACKUP LOG cannot be performed because there is no current database backup. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) How to fix it? Thanks, [name and email removed as requested] Solution / Fix: This error can happen when you have never taken full backup of your database and you try to attempt to take backup of the log only. Take full backup once and attempt to take log back up. If the name of your database is MyTestDB follow procedure as following.   • Change the logical name of sql server express 2005 database file?

    In Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express for Sql Server Express 2005, I needed to copy a database for testing and keep it on the same server as the old database. I did the following: Right Click on Databases Created new database Detached the database I wanted to copy "Restored" my new database from the backup file of my old database. I did this by clicking the 'Overwrite the existing database' box on the Options pane, and I changed the paths in the 'restore as' options so that they pointed to my new .mdf and .ldf files. Everything is working like I want. Problem is, when I right-click - Properties - Files on my new database, the logical name of the .mdf file is the same as the logical name of the old .mdf file. They are actually different files - they just share the same logical name? I guess maybe this isn't a short-term problem, but I can see it confusing somebody down the road. Any way to change the logical name of the .mdf file? UPDATE EDIT - Apparently you can just change the logical name through the GUI by, get this, clicking on it and typing a new name. I could swear that was not possible when I posted this, but maybe it was and I somehow missed it! Either way - the solution below should still work but doing it through the GUI is also an option.

    So today was RTM of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials released. I immediately tried to do an in-place upgrade of an existing RTM 2012 Essentials to RTM 2012 R2 Essentials, but get: Windows Server 2012 Essentials cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You’ll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced)”. This seems a bit odd, is this really the case? I can't find anything in the official documentation stating that this upgrade isn't possible.

    Our application fetches the correct database server from a pool of database servers. So each query is really 2 queries, and they look like this: Fetch the correct DB server Execute the query We do this so we can take DB servers online and offline as necessary, as well as for load-balancing. But the first query seems like it could be cached to memory, so it only actually queries the database every 5 or 10 minutes or so. What's the best way to do this? Thanks.

I'm going to be purchasing the necessary server licenses for Windows Server 2012 Standard and Microsoft Exchange 2013 Enterprise. I just have a few questions about the CAL's thing which seems like a complete ripoff to me. How are CAL's tracked for both Windows Server and Exchange? Is it tied to Active Directory profiles? What happens if I dont have the necessary CAL's for Windows Server? Will a client be denied access from Active Directory? Is there any enforcement for this? Also the same question for Exchange 2013 CAL's Thanks

    Hi everyone, We are currently planning the database structure of a quite complex e-commerce web app that has flexibility as it's main cornerstone. Our app features a large amount of data (products) and we have run into a slight headache trying to keep performance high without compromizing normalization rules in the database, or leaving our highly beloved flexibility concept behind when integrating product options (also widely known as product attributes or parameters). Based on various references and sources available, we have made up lists on pros and cons of all major and well known database patterns to solve this. After comparing these, we have come up with two final alternatives: EAV (Entity-attribute-value model) : Pros: Database is used for all sorting. Cons: All related queries will include a number of joins between multiple tables in order to complete the collection of data. SLOB (Serialized LOB, also known as Facade?) : Pros: Very flexible. Keeping the number of necessary joins low compared to a EAV design pattern. Easy to update/add/remove data from each product. Cons: All sorting will be done by the application instead of the database. Will use lots of performance (memory?) when big datasets is processed by a large number of users. Our main questions: Which pattern/structure would you use, or maybe even a different solution? Is there better databases besides mySQL available nowadays to accomplish what we want? Thanks a lot!     Hi, I am looking for a easy to use and deploy sql type database i can ship with a desktop application. This will be a small application user's can download from my website. In the vb6 days, access was the common database for small desktop apps, what is my option these days? Looking at SQL CE it seems to have a quite a few limitations such as count(distinct) etc SQL express needs to be installed and running as a service (could i include the SQL express deployments in my deployment so the user doesn't even know its been installed? I assume size would then be an issue) SQL 2005/2008 is not an option due to size and licensing restrictions. I would like to use c#, wpf and entity framework. What would seem to be the best options based on your knowledge and experience? Thanks

  • cloning mac address of physical server converted into vmware server

    We've recently converted a physical Windows Server 2003 into vmware using P2V. However, one of the pieces of software on the 2003 machine are still looking for the old server's network MAC address in order to run. I've read several articles where it's discussed that you can modify the last part of the generated address and set it to static, but I need to clone the whole mac address to mimic the one in the old server. We're running CentOS and VMware server 2.0 as the host system. I was told that maybe adding in a second network card in the host and setting the virtual system's nic to that card instead of "bridged" would allow me to edit the vmx file and clone the whole MAC address. I can't use the old network card from the physical server because it's ISA and our new bus is PCI Any ideas? Thanks, Mike

  • Virtualbox PXE Boot Failing with a Windows Server 2008 R2 Server

    Some fast help on this would be good, I have been on this problem for 14 hours. In a Virtualbox test environment I have 2 virtual machines networked together using a internal network (no traffic runs though the host, it is all at a software level). One is a fresh client with 512mb of ram and a dual core set-up, the other is the server with 1.5GB of ram and running server 2008 r2. The server is configured as a dns server, dchp server, domain controller and also serves PXE booting though WDS (Windows Deployment Services). Both machines can see each other and I am able to start a network boot. The issue comes at the second to last stage of the pre windows PE install. On TFTP download of boot.sdi it starts it but stops during the boot process.

  • MS Word reports files read-only on Win Server 2003 file server

    I'm not a sysadmin, but I play one on TV: I'm trying to fix a problem for my mom's tiny non-profit company's server. I set up a Windows Server 2003 machine as a domain controller and file server. Everything has been working well for a few months, but lately when she tries to save changes to a Word (Office XP) document stored on the server, Word will intermittently report that the file is read-only. Saving to an alternate file in the same directory works, and when she closes Word and re-opens the original document, it'll save changes just fine. No one else ever has these files open. I've checked security and share permissions, and everything's OK. We've tried rebooting the server, but the problem continues, but intermittently. I have no clue what's going on. Help!

  • SQL Server architecture - they want to move my database to new instance...Why?

    Our current production database environment contains about 10 similarily managed databases. Our agency has just purchased and is installing new blade chasses and wants to move my database to a new instance (leaving the other 9 on another). This decision is being driven by one of our IT staff, not a DBA. I am a project manager, not a DBA but I know enough to not necesarrily have a good feeling about this decision and I am urging our IT department to make a sound decision based on what is best for the database. Our IT department has stated that it is not good to have all our eggs in one basket, and has also stated that my database contains "regulatory data" so it should be on its own instance. A couple of truths: - None of the databases on the current instance are OLTP databases nor are any of them data warehouses - My database currently has joins/views to a couple of the other databases in the production environment So my questions are as follows: Am I wrong to disregard a statement about eggs in baskets? (hello, this is why we have maintenance plans/disaster recovery plans). I'll mention that other databases also have regulatory data too. What types of questions do I need to ask to determine if this is a sound decicion? (A DBA friend mentioned that if the service level agreement of said database does not radically differ from the others then why do they want to do this?) I have done some research on linked servers. What arguments should I bring forth about the fact that I have views setup that rely on data from other DBs currently?
