  • How can I make my Ruby on Rails 2.3.4 application "Rails 3-ready"

    - by marcgg
    I'm developing an application with Ruby on Rails that I want to maintain for at least a few years, so I'm concerned about the next version coming up soon. Going from Rails 1 to Rails 2 was such a big pain that I didn't bother and froze my gems and let the application die, alone, in the dark. On this project I don't want to do that. First because this new version looks awesome, but also because this application may turn into a real product. How can I prepare my application so that it will be upgradable with as little changes as possible. How time consuming do you think switching version will be? And what about my server? Deployment? I'm already looking at deprecation notices... what else can I do?

  • Problem using PHP to open text file - blank spaces are removed

    - by Reg H
    Hi All, I'm trying to open and process ASCII files using PHP, but am having problems. The problem is that the blank spaces are removed, which I don't want to have happen, since the files are fixed width. The PHP script I used is this: $myFile = Test.SEG"; $file_handler = fopen ($myFile, r) or die ("Can't open SEG File."); while (!feof($file_handler)) { $dataline = fgets($file_handler); echo $dataline, ""; } I tried pasting samples of the original file in here, but the spaces were removed here as well! At this stage I'm just building the script in steps, getting one step working at a time, but this is as far as I've gotten. I plan to use substr() on '$dataline' to pick out the fields I need. Any suggestions on how to keep the spaces intact? Something tells me it's something to do with encoding, but I don't know for sure. Thanks!

  • jQuery Form Processing With PHP to MYSQL Database Using $.ajax Request

    - by FrustratedUser
    Question: How can I process a form using jQuery and the $.ajax request so that the data is passed to a script which writes it to a database? Problem: I have a simple email signup form that when processed, adds the email along with the current date to a table in a MySQL database. Processing the form without jQuery works as intended, adding the email and date. With jQuery, the form submits successfully and returns the success message. However, no data is added to the database. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! <!-- PROCESS.PHP --> <?php // DB info $dbhost = '#'; $dbuser = '#'; $dbpass = '#'; $dbname = '#'; // Open connection to db $conn = mysql_connect($dbhost, $dbuser, $dbpass) or die ('Error connecting to mysql'); mysql_select_db($dbname); // Form variables $email = $_POST['email']; $submitted = $_POST['submitted']; // Clean up function cleanData($str) { $str = trim($str); $str = strip_tags($str); $str = strtolower($str); return $str; } $email = cleanData($email); $error = ""; if(isset($submitted)) { if($email == '') { $error .= '<p class="error">Please enter your email address.</p>' .   • IIS7 Modules - managed or native?

    - by Simon Linder
    Hi all, as the old ISAPI filters are going to die sooner or later, I want to rewrite an old ISAPI filter that was used in IIS 6 into a module for use in IIS 7. The module will be used globally, meaning it will be used within each site, on a Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5 installed, that will host several thousand web sites and managing about 50 application pools. My question now is if I should write that module in managed or unmanaged code? One of my concerns regarding managed code is the massive memory consumption due to the .NET framework overhead. I don't know how this would effect the server's performance. I already wrote modules in managed as well as in unmanaged code. So this is not the bothering my decision. But I would prefer to write the module in C# if there are no huge drawbacks. Any suggestions about that issue?

  • Inheritance Problem in Perl OOP

    - by Sam
    Hello, I have a sub class that calls a method from a super class. and the method in the super class use a method that is defined in the super class as asbstract(not really abstract) but implemented in the sub class. for example: package BaseClass; sub new { } sub method1 { return someAbstractMethod(); } sub someAbtsractMethod { die "oops, this is an abstract method that should be implemented in a subclass" ; } 1; package SubClass; sub new { } sub someAbtsractMethod { print "now we implement the asbtract method"; } 1; now when I do: $sub = new SubClass(); $sub-method1(); It calls the abstract message and i get the specified error message. if I took off the abstractmethod from the super class and just leave the implementation in the subclass, It does not recognize the method and I get subroutine abstractmethod not found error.

  • Perl unit test - start a tcp server & continue

    - by John
    I am trying to write a unit test for a client server application. To test the client, in my unit test, I want to first start my tcp server (which itself is another perl file). I tried to start the tcp server by forking: if (! fork()) { system ("$^X server.pl") == 0 or die "couldn't start server" } So when I call "make test" after "perl Makefile.PL", this test starts & I can see the server starting but after that the unit test just hangs there. So I guess I need to start this server in background and I tried the "&" at the end to force it to start in background & then test to continue. But, I still couldn't succeed. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

  • How can I parse this configuration file format (allowing comments) in Perl?

    - by rockyurock
    I am reading some parameters (from user input) from a .txt file and want to make sure that my script could read it even a space or tab is left before that particular parameter by user. Also if I want to add a comment for each parameter followed by # , after the parameter (e.g 7870 # this is default port number) to let the user know about the parameter How can I achieve it in same file? Right now, I am using split /\|\s/. Code: $data_file="config.txt"; open(RAK, $data_file)|| die("Could not open file!"); @raw_data=<RAK>; @Ftp_Server =split(/\|\s/,$raw_data[32]); config.txt (user input file) PING_TTL | 1 CLIENT_PORT | 7870 FTP_SERVER | 192.162.522.222 Could any body suggest me a robust way to do it? /rocky

  • How to access stdClass variables stdClass Object([max(id)])=>64)

    - by Theopile
    I need the very last valid entry in a database table which would be the row with the greatest primary key. So using mysqli, my query is "SELECT MAX(id) FROM table LIMIT 1". This query returns the correct number(using print_r()) but I cannot figure out how to access it. Here is the main code. Note that the $this-link refers to class with a mysqli connection. $q="select max(id) from stones limit 1"; $qed=$this->link->query($q) or die(mysqli_error()); if($qed){ $row=$qed->fetch_object(); print_r($row); echo $lastid=$row;//here is the problem } The valid line print_r($row) echos out "stdClass Object ( [max(id)] = 68 )"

  • Guaranteed COM object release?

    I wrote the following code under the assumption that Excel will die with Monkey: class ExcelMonkey { private static Excel.Application xl = new Excel.Application(); public static bool parse(string filename) { if (filename.Contains("foo")) { var workbook = xl.Workbooks.Open(filename); var sheet = workbook.Worksheets.get_Item(1); // do stuff return true; } return false; } } How do I make sure it does? Do I need to release workbook and sheet separately? I want to have Excel around for the lifetime of the program, it's a huge performance improvement.

  • Why am I getting such random results when checking DNS?

    - by animuson
    The code is as follows: $domain = "fosajfjdkgdajfhsd.com"; $check1 = checkdnsrr($domain, "MX"); $check2 = checkdnsrr($domain, "A"); $check3 = (checkdnsrr($domain, "MX") || checkdnsrr($domain, "A")); $check4 = !(checkdnsrr($domain, "MX") || checkdnsrr($domain, "A")); die("{$check1} - {$check2} - {$check3} - {$check4}"); However when I check the output to see what it's returning, I get this: - 1 - 1 - The domain obviously wouldn't exist, so I don't understand why checking the A record is return true and checking the MX result doesn't give me anything at all. I don't understand what's going wrong here.

In Internet Explorer however when i'm debugging the $_SESSION i retrieve an empty array back, this means that in Internet Explorer the session isn't started on my second page. This is the code i'm using to print the session on my second page: session_start(); //unset($_SESSION['bp_email']); include("includes/_dbconnect.php"); print_r($_SESSION); die();

  • Using Inch or cm/mm from metric system for americans and canadians?

    - by gamma
    We're developing an international product that displays a ruler to the user. Now in Germany and many other countries its of course common to use the metric system: cm or mm. I'm aware that americans and canadians (and maybe others too) do still use inches, feet and yards. So the question is: will todays americans (and other inch-country-citizens) understand the metric system and take it for granted - or do they still love their inches so much that they'd rather die than use a product with incorrect measurements? ( sorry for being blunt ;) )

  • PHP: Strange behaviour while calling custom php functions

    - by baltusaj
    I am facing a strange behavior while coding in PHP with Flex. Let me explain the situation: I have two funcions lets say: populateTable() //puts some data in a table made with flex createXML() //creates an xml file which is used by Fusion Charts to create a chart Now, if i call populateTable() alone, the table gets populated with data but if i call it with createXML(), the table doesn't get populated but createXML() does it's work i.e. creates an xml file. Even if i run following code, only xml file gets generated but table remains empty whereas i called populateTable() before createXML(). Any idea what may be going wrong? • ASP.NET binding object to Request in asp.net mvc

    - by Alxandr
    I've created a object that I'd like to have accessible from wherever the request-object is accessible, and to "die" with the request, more or less like how you always in a mvc-application has access to the RouteData-collection. Especially it's important that I have access to this object in the execution of action-filters. And also there need to be created a new object of my class whenever a new request is made to the page (the object needs to be request-safe, ie. only one request modifies that one object). Any thoughts about how to achieve this?

    I have a few sites built with Cakephp. If any of these sites lose their connection to the database for whatever reason it does not handle it well. Basically it renders itself inside itself trying to display an error over and over until the browser crashes. The rendering itself inside itself is caused by the use of requestAction from elements. What I want to know is how can I check if the database connection exists I tried this in the app_controller before filter: if(!ConnectionManager::getDataSource('default')) { die(); //this will be a message instead } but it does not seem to work. I just want to check, that there isn't a great flaw in any of these technologies that would render my research time useless. E.g. performance is terrible, it's cool for simple apps but can only take you so far
