  • Variable-byte encoding clarification

    - by Myx
Hello: I am very new to the world of byte encoding so please excuse me (and by all means, correct me) if I am using/expressing simple concepts in the wrong way. I am trying to understand variable-byte encoding. I have read the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable-width_encoding) as well as a book chapter from an Information Retrieval textbook. I think I understand how to encode a decimal integer. For example, if I wanted to provide variable-byte encoding for the integer 60, I would have the following result: 1 0 1 1 1 1 0 0 (please let me know if the above is incorrect). If I understand the scheme, then I'm not completely sure how the information is compressed. Is it because usually we would use 32 bits to represent an integer, so that representing 60 would result in 1 1 1 1 0 0 preceded by 26 zeros, thus wasting that space as opposed to representing it with just 8 bits instead? Thank you in advance for the clarifications.

  • DESPERATE Request - jQuery tag suggestion, How is it inserting the DOM Element SPAN?

    - by nobosh
Take a look at this snazy plugin: http://remysharp.com/2007/12/28/jquery-tag-suggestion/ ** it's real small Source: http://remysharp.com/downloads/tag.js For the life of me, I can't figure out where in the plugin JS the code is injecting the SPAN which contains the tags... I see the following around line 73: var tagMatches = document.createElement(settings.tagContainer); But where is it injecting it into the doc? I ask because I need to find a way to control where it goes based on an ID, something like this: document.body.insertBefore(newDiv, my_div); Thanks so much, and good luck, It's tricky!

  • Javascript - why do I sometimes fail to read file content with GDownloadUrl?

    - by Daj pan spokój
    Hi everybody. I try to read some file with google's GDownloadUrl and it works only from time to time. failure means fileRows == "blah blah" success means fileRows == (real file content) I've noticed, however, that when I cease (with Firebug) the execution on line 3 for a couple of seconds, it succeeds more often. Maybe it is some kind of threading bug, then? Do You guys have any tip or idea? 1 var fileContent = "blah blah"; 2 availabilityFile = "input/available/" + date + ".csv"; 3 GDownloadUrl(availabilityFile, function(fileData) { 4 fileContent = fileData; 5 }); 6 fileRows = fileContent.split("\n");

  • VB Script - Unmount USB drive

    - by user736887
I have tedious project coming up. I need to insert a usb flash drive into a computer, then copy over three files to that drive, and then unmount it and repeat 3000 times (literally). I was hoping to come up with some VB Script that can reduce my input to just 1.) insert the usb and 2.) double click on the .vbs file and remove the usb flash drive. I figure it isnt too difficult to come up with the copy and paste part of the code as long as I am inserting the usb into the same port every time. Is this assumption correct? However, the real problem is unmounting/ejecting the usb drive. Is there any simple VB Script code that can accomplish this? Thank you, -Corey

  • Debug.WriteLine not working

    - by Velika
In the past, perhaps versions of Visual Studio prior to the 2008 that I am using now, I would do something like this in my VB.NET code: System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Message") ..and the output would go to the output window. Now it doesn't. Something must first apparently be enabled. If this involves "attaching a debugger", please explain how to do it. It seems to me that it should just work without too much of a fuss. Here's a video explaining the issue in real time and showing you all my settings http://screencast.com/t/YQnPb0mJcs I'm using VS2008

  • Web Services vs Persistent Sockets

    - by dsquires
I plan on doing a little benchmarking around this question, myself. But I thought it would be good to get some initial feedback from "the community". Has anyone out there done any analysis regarding the pros and cons of these two technologies? My thoughts: Opening and closing TCP/IP connections for web service calls is relatively expensive compared to persistent connections. Dealing with intermittent connection errors and state, etc... would be easier with a web service based framework. You don't see World of Warcraft using web services. One question that I can't seem to find much of answer for anywhere (even on here)... are the limits on the # of persistent connections a single network card can support, etc?

  • Server Development Tool?

    - by aloneguid
Hi, For my programming tasks I use about 2-3 remote servers to deploy and run my code against different conditions. This cannot be emulated locally as the server configuration requires powerful hardware. Most of time I need to stop service, update binareis, start service, view logs in realtime, download logs. Currently I'm doing this manually and over time this becomes a real pain in the ass, especially because the environment is not ideal in terms of network badwidth, reliability etc. I just wonder if someone from server programmers have the similar problems and how do you bear with them. Any special tools/hints/secrets?

  • Hidden features of x86 assembly

    - by Earlz
I am still a fan of x86 assembly(sorta) and know a lot of developers still using x86 assembly, although by far there are very few features available in assembly, let us list out the most useful and not so well known ones. Of course the question is on the lines of the Hidden Features questions listed below.: Hidden Features of JavaScript Hidden Features of CSS Hidden Features of C# Hidden Features of VB.NET Hidden Features of Java Hidden Features of ASP.NET Hidden Features of Python Hidden Features of TextPad Hidden Features of Eclipse Hidden Features of Classic ASP Please specify one feature per answer. Also, you can specify all bits of the x86 such as 16bit(real mode), 32bit, and 64bit. Please keep it neutral of assembler though. Both Intel and AT&T syntax is welcome but please don't for example demonstrate a useful macro feature for yasm.

  • How to keep views free of authorization logic in mvc?

    - by David Lay
I have a view to display a list of items. The user can edit, delete or create new items, but according to their authorizations they may or may not be allowed to do some of this actions. I have the requirement to display only the actions which the current user is allowed to do, but I don't want to clutter the views with authorization if-else's Despise of being a very common requirement, I can't find a real satisfactory way of doing it. My best approach so far is to provide an overload to the Html.ActionLink extension method that takes the permission to ask for, but there are going to be more complex scenarios, like hiding entire blocks of html or switching a textbox for a label+hidden. Is there a better way to do this?

  • Unit Testing in ASP.NET MVC: Minimising the number of asserts per test

    - by Neil Barnwell
I'm trying out TDD on a greenfield hobby app in ASP.NET MVC, and have started to get test methods such as the following: [Test] public void Index_GetRequest_ShouldReturnPopulatedIndexViewModel() { var controller = new EmployeeController(); controller.EmployeeService = GetPrePopulatedEmployeeService(); var actionResult = (ViewResult)controller.Index(); var employeeIndexViewModel = (EmployeeIndexViewModel)actionResult.ViewData.Model; EmployeeDetailsViewModel employeeViewModel = employeeIndexViewModel.Items[0]; Assert.AreEqual(1, employeeViewModel.ID); Assert.AreEqual("Neil Barnwell", employeeViewModel.Name); Assert.AreEqual("ABC123", employeeViewModel.PayrollNumber); } Now I'm aware that ideally tests will only have one Assert.xxx() call, but does that mean I should refactor the above to separate tests with names such as: Index_GetRequest_ShouldReturnPopulatedIndexViewModelWithCorrectID Index_GetRequest_ShouldReturnPopulatedIndexViewModelWithCorrectName Index_GetRequest_ShouldReturnPopulatedIndexViewModelWithCorrectPayrollNumber ...where the majority of the test is duplicated code (which therefore is being tested more than once and violates the "keep tests fast" advice)? That seems to be taking it to the extreme to me, so if I'm right as I am, what is the real-world meaning of the "one assert per test" advice?

  • Cufon delay in WordPress, Mac/Safari/FF...

    - by luke
Using cufon 'manually' not the plugin.... I have a delay on many page loads in Safari and FF on the Cufon enabled headings.... http://www.budewebdesign.com/haf Tried moving Cufon higher up (eg before wp_head() and the plugin code that calls, without any real effect. Some pages no problem but others just a long enough delay to be annoying. I'm not really keen on hiding the headings before the page load completes as is suggested elsewhere. If it loads without delay some of the time, I wonder if it can be made to 'all' of the time :) My connection speed is good. Thanks for any ideas on this.

  • store everything only once, smarter

    - by hsmit
In the digital world a lot is stored multiple times. As a thought experiment or creative challenge I want you to think about making this more efficient and maybe reuse more. Think of the following cases: an mp3 track is downloaded multiple times, copied over various devices on website a login form is often rebuild many times, why not reuse more code? words themselves are used many times questions and answers are accidentally saved at many places in parallel images or photos often describe the same data (Eiffel tower, Golden gate, Taj Mahal) etc etc Are you aware of solutions? Or are you thinking about similar topics? Ideas? Blueprints? I'd love to hear from you!

  • Has anybody use javafx on CDC J9?

    - by 4NDR01D3
Is that possible?? I mean, I have an already working project that runs in windows mobile using the J9 virtual machine for CDC. My user interface there is using AWT and it works fine and it looks OK, but been honest it doesn't take real advantage of the devices were is running... So I start reading about JavaFX and that looks really cool, but all that I see about mobiles there is applied to CLDC, MIDP, etc. but my application is already running on CDC J9 and I can't change this cause I'm using a Derby database on it. So, my plan is to code the GUI again, but keeping the logic of the application. So do you guys think javafx is the way to go? or, am I wasting my time learning javafx for this project. Thanks in advance, Gustavo.

    - by Ankit Rathod
Hello, I am beginner in WPF. I am basically a Silverlight guy and as i know it doesn't support the full real 3d model of WPF. I am getting interested in learning 3D in WPF. I googled up for WPF and i get very old links which are 3 years old back when WPF was known as Avalon. They may not be of any use in V4.0. Can anybody refer me some links where i can learn WPF 3D from basics? Thanks in advance :)

  • Python lazy property decorator

    - by detly
Recently I've gone through an existing code base and refactored a lot of instance attributes to be lazy, ie. not be initialised in the constructor but only upon first read. These attributes do not change over the lifetime of the instance, but they're a real bottleneck to calculate that first time and only really accessed for special cases. I find myself typing the following snippet of code over and over again for various attributes across various classes: class testA(object): def __init__(self): self._a = None self._b = None @property def a(self): if self._a is None: # Calculate the attribute now self._a = 7 return self._a @property def b(self): #etc Is there an existing decorator to do this already in Python that I'm simply unaware of? Or, is there a reasonably simple way to define a decorator that does this? I'm working under Python 2.5, but 2.6 answers might still be interesting if they are significantly different.

  • How to detect if a page is an RSS or ATOM feed

    - by Pepper
Hello, I'm currently building a new online Feed Reader in PHP. One of the features i'm working on is feed auto-discovery. If a user enters a website URL, the script will detect that its not a feed and look for the real feed URL by parsing the HTML for the proper tag. The problem is, the way im currently detecting if the URL is a feed or a website only works part of the time, and I know it can't be the best solution. Right now im taking the CURL response and running it through simplexml_load_string, if it can't parse it I treat it as a website. Here is the code. $xml = @simplexml_load_string( $site_found['content'] ); if( !$xml ) // this is a website, not a feed { // handle website } else { // parse feed } Obviously, this isn't ideal. Also, when it runs into an HTML website that it can parse, it thinks its a feed. Any suggestions on a good way of detecting the difference between a feed or non-feed in PHP? Thanks, Pepper http://feedingo.com

  • What is the need of functional programming?

    - by Lazer
I have read about functional programming which is stateless, gives the same result invocation after invocation, about closures and other related concepts. I still feel that I have very little idea what these things are about. Thinking about this, right now, I feel complete in C, C++, and Java. Any programming problem and I start thinking in one of these languages. So, I never feel and understand the need for functional languages. A good starting point therefore would be to try to understand some things that are not possible in imperative languages but possible in functional languages. I feel unless I understand where exactly functional languages fit inside my already complete world of C, C++ and Java, I would never be able to appreciate and understand them. So, can somebody help me understand the real need for functional programming? Where exactly do they fit in?

  • How to translate small bash code to csh / tcsh (setting GNOME terminal title)

    - by user1069609
I need help to translate the following bash code to tcsh : case $TERM in (xterm*) PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\033]0;${USER}@${HOSTNAME}\007"' ;; esac It is part of my .bashrc on all the machines which have bash as login shell. The code sets the GNOME terminal title to user@somehost (obviously with the real user name and host name). However some hosts have tcsh as login shell, so I need to translate the code into tcsh and add it to the .tcshrc . I considered to somehow source another file with the bash code from inside the .tcshrc file, but I couldn't make it work.

  • Tools to create maximum velocity in a .NET dev team

    - by Søren Spelling Lund
If you were to self-fund a software project which tools, frameworks, components would you employ to ensure maximum productivity for the dev team and that the "real" problem is being worked on. What I'm looking for are low friction tools which get the job done with a minimum of fuss. Tools I'd characterize as such are SVN/TortioseSVN, ReSharper, VS itself. I'm looking for frameworks which solve the problems inherient in all software projects like ORM, logging, UI frameworks/components. An example on the UI side would be ASP.NET MVC vs WebForms vs MonoRail.

  • Localization — how to check that Filename1 and Filename2 are the same

    - by modosansreves
I want to know that Filename1, provided by the user is the same as stored in DB (Filename2). I was about to use string.Equals(Filename1, Filename2, StringComparison.CurrentCultureIgnoreCase) but then I doubted whether I should use StringComparison.InvariantCultureIgnoreCase. Obviously, I need to do this the same way OS does, or use appropriate API. In some cultures, AFAIK, characters (e.g. vocals) may change if the next one is Capitalized. As I primarily target English-speaking market, I'd like my software to work well throughout the world.

  • Is FastCGI still a right answer?

    - by Ted Henry
FastCGI is old but it still seems like it must be the right answer in some cases. It seems like the preferred deployment of Perl/Catalyst web applications is with FastCGI. FastCGI was popular with Rails but seems to no longer be. (Why?) The Java world doesn't seem to have anything to do with FastCGI. Is something like Tomcat way better than Apache+FastCGI? Is choosing FastCGI still a good idea or just a lingering technology? Ted
