• VB.NET 2008 Application crashing during Do Loop

- by RedHaze
I am writing an application to compare each item on listbox1 to all items on listbox2. If the item is found, then remove it from both lists. The goal is to only have the items that were not found remain on both lists. The problem is, the application just hangs and I never get any results. I looked at my code several times and I cannot figure out what's going on (programming noob I know...). Can anybody help me with this? Code Snippet: Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click Dim a As String Dim b As String Dim y As String For i As Integer = 0 To ListBox1.Items.Count - 1 a = ListBox1.Items(i) y = 1 Do While y = 1 For x As Integer = 0 To ListBox2.Items.Count - 1 b = ListBox2.Items(x) Dim res As Int16 = String.Compare(a, b) If res = 0 Then y = 0 ListBox2.Items.Remove(i) ListBox2.Items.Remove(x) ElseIf x = ListBox1.Items.Count Then Exit Do End If Next Loop Next End Sub

• How to foreach through a 2 dimensional array?

- by Scott Langham
If I've got a 2 dimensional array. string[,] table = { { "aa", "aaa" }, { "bb", "bbb" } }; And I'd like to foreach through it like this. foreach (string[] row in table) { Console.WriteLine(row[0] + " " + row[1]); } But, I get the error "Can't convert type string to string[] Is there a way I can achieve what I want, i.e. iterate through the first dimension of the array with the iterator variable returning me the 1 dimensional array for that row? Thanks.

• C++: Conceptual problem in designing an intepreter

- by sub
I'm programming an interpreter for an experimental programming language (educational, fun,...) So far, everything went well (Tokenizer & Parser), but I'm getting a huge problem with some of the data structures in the part that actually runs the tokenized and parsed code. My programming language basically has only two types, int and string, and they are represented as C++ strings (std class) and ints Here is a short version of the data structure that I use to pass values around: enum DataType { Null, Int, String } class Symbol { public: string identifier; DataType type; string stringValue; int intValue; } I can't use union because string doesn't allow me to. This structure above is beginning to give me a headache. I have to scatter code like this everywhere in order to make it work, it is beginning to grow unmaintainable: if( mySymbol.type == Int ) { mySymbol.intValue = 1234; } else { mySymbol.stringValue = "abcde"; } I use the Symbol data structure for variables, return values for functions and general representation of values in the programming language. Is there any better way to solve this? I hope so!

• Java: ListA.addAll(ListB) fires NullPointerException?

- by HH
The err part is Capitalized in the code, it also comes in foreaching. Because of the abstract list, it cannot be initialized, declaration is in a static field. The lists have the same type. import java.util.*; public class Test { public static final List<String> highPrio = Arrays.asList("*","/"); public static List<String> ops; public static void main(String[] args) { //ERROR HERE, why do it throw nullPointer? ops.addAll(highPrio); for(String s : ops) { System.out.println(s); } } }

I am using preon lib to parse binary data it contain short, int data The structure as follows @BoundNumber(size="32", byteOrder=ByteOrder.BigEndian) public int time;// @BoundString(size="2") public String alphaChar;// 2 byte array @BoundNumber(size="16", byteOrder=ByteOrder.BigEndian) public int code1;//short @BoundNumber(size="16", byteOrder=ByteOrder.BigEndian) public int code2;//short @BoundNumber(size="16", byteOrder=ByteOrder.BigEndian) public int code3;//short @BoundString(size="8") public String firstName;// 8 byte array @BoundString(size="8") public String middleName;// 8 byte array @BoundString(size="8") public String lastName;// 8 byte array @BoundNumber(size="16", byteOrder=ByteOrder.BigEndian) public int code4;//short I am getting correct values for code1, code2, code3 but for code4 it not giving me correct value. It always gives me 0(Zero); When I checked with position of byte array; it shows me correct value. Is there any kind padding require?

• When should ThreadLocal be used instead of Thread.SetData/Thread.GetData?

- by Jon Ediger
Prior to .net 4.0, I implemented a solution using named data slots in System.Threading.Thread. Now, in .net 4.0, there is the idea of ThreadLocal. How does ThreadLocal usage compare to named data slots? Does the ThreadLocal value get inherited by children threads? Is the idea that ThreadLocal is a simplified version of using named data slots? An example of some stuff using named data slots follows. Could this be simplified through use of ThreadLocal, and would it retain the same properties as the named data slots? public static void SetSliceName(string slice) { System.Threading.Thread.SetData(System.Threading.Thread.GetNamedDataSlot(SliceVariable), slice); } public static string GetSliceName(bool errorIfNotFound) { var slice = System.Threading.Thread.GetData(System.Threading.Thread.GetNamedDataSlot(SliceVariable)) as string; if (errorIfNotFound && string.IsNullOrEmpty(slice)) {throw new ConfigurationErrorsException("Server slice name not configured.");} return slice; }

• Java: I've created a list of word objects to include the name and the frequency, but having trouble

- by adam08
Hi Everyone, I'm working on a project which has a dictionary of words and I'm extracting them and adding them to an ArrayList as word objects. I have a class called Word as below. What I'm wondering is how do I access these word objects to update the frequency? As part of this project, I need to only have one unique word, and increase the frequency of that word by the number of occurrences in the dictionary. Word(String word) { this.word = word; this.freq = 0; } public String getWord() { return word; } public int getFreq() { return freq; } public void setFreq() { freq = freq + 1; } This is how I am adding the word objects to the ArrayList...I think it's ok? String pattern = "[^a-zA-Z\\s]"; String strippedString = line.replaceAll(pattern, ""); line = strippedString.toLowerCase(); StringTokenizer st = new StringTokenizer(line); while (st.hasMoreTokens()) { String newWord = st.nextToken(); word.add(new Word(newWord)); count++; }

• Getting a substring in Ruby by x number of chars

- by wotaskd
I'm trying to produce some Ruby code that will take a string and return a new one, with a number x number of characters removed from its end - these can be actual letters, numbers, spaces etc. Ex: given the following string a_string = "a1wer4zx" I need a simple way to get the same string, minus - say - the 3 last digits. In the case above, that would be "a1wer". The way I'm doing it right now seems very convoluted: an_array = a_string.split(//,(a_string.length-2)) an_array.pop new_string = an_array.join Any ideas?

• Does RazorEngine require MVC3 to be installed?

- by tkha007
I am working on a web project that uses MVC2. I decided to try out RazorEngine to do some e-mail templating. This appeared to work fine when I was protyping using an MVC2 project so I assumed that RazorEngine will work fine for my e-mail templating solution. What I had forgotten at the time was that I actually had MVC3 installed on my local development machine. After deploying the project on a pre-test server I get the following error in the logs when the application attempts to do anything with RazorEngine: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Razor, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. File name: 'System.Web.Razor, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' at RazorEngine.Compilation.DefaultCompilerServiceFactory.CreateCompilerService(Language language) at RazorEngine.Templating.TemplateService.CreateTemplateType(String razorTemplate, Type modelType) at RazorEngine.Templating.TemplateService.CreateTemplate[T](String razorTemplate, T model) at RazorEngine.Templating.TemplateService.Parse[T](String razorTemplate, T model) at RazorEngine.Razor.Parse[T](String razorTemplate, T model) at System.Dynamic.UpdateDelegates.UpdateAndExecute3[T0,T1,T2,TRet](CallSite site, T0 arg0, T1 arg1, T2 arg2) at Persistence.Utility.RazorEngineHelper.Parse(String templateName, Object model) in The fact that it can't find 'System.Web.Razor' means that this DLL does not exist on the deployed server. The only difference I can think of between the deployment server and my local dev machine is that the deployment server does not have MVC3 installed but I may be mistaken because the deployment server is not something I normally control and as such I don't have a lot of information about it. It is meant to host this particular application so there have been previous deployments of this application to this server. This is the first time I'm making a deployment with RazorEngine as a dependency.

• How do you make long SQL invoked from other code readable?

- by Artem
This is a very open question, but I think it can be very beneficial for SQL readability. So you have a Java program, and you are trying to call a monster SQL statement from it, with many subqueries and joins. The starting point for my question is a string constant like this: static string MONSTER_STATEMENT = "SELECT " + " fields" + "WHERE "+ " fieldA = (SELECT a FROM TableC) " + "AND fieldB IN (%s)" + "AND fieldC = %d " + "FROM " " tableA INNER JOIN tableB ON ..."; It later gets filled using String.format and executed. What are you tricks for making this kind of stuff readable? Do you separate your inner joins. Do you indent the SQL itself inside the string? Where do you put the comments? Please share all of the tricks in your arsenal.

• stringindexoutofbounds with currency converter java program

- by user1795926
I am have trouble with a summary not showing up. I am supposed to modify a previous Java assignment by by adding an array of objects. Within the loop, instantiate each individual object. Make sure the user cannot keep adding another Foreign conversion beyond your array size. After the user selects quit from the menu, prompt if the user want to display a summary report. If they select ‘Y’ then, using your array of objects, display the following report: Item Conversion Dollars Amount 1 Japanese Yen 100.00 32,000.00 2 Mexican Peso 400.00 56,000.00 3 Canadian Dollar 100.00 156.00 etc. Number of Conversions = 3 There are no errors when I compile..but when I run the program it is fine until I hit 0 to end the conversion and have it ask if i want to see a summary. This error displays: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: 0 at java.lang.String.charAt(String.java:658) at Lab8.main(Lab8.java:43) my code: import java.util.Scanner; import java.text.DecimalFormat; public class Lab8 { public static void main(String[] args) { final int Max = 10; String a; char summary; int c = 0; Foreign[] Exchange = new Foreign[Max]; Scanner Keyboard = new Scanner(System.in); Foreign.opening(); do { Exchange[c] = new Foreign(); Exchange[c].getchoice(); Exchange[c].dollars(); Exchange[c].amount(); Exchange[c].vertical(); System.out.println("\n" + Exchange[c]); c++; System.out.println("\n" + "Please select 1 through 4, or 0 to quit" + >"\n"); c= Keyboard.nextInt(); } while (c != 0); System.out.print("\nWould you like a summary of your conversions? (Y/N): "); a = Keyboard.nextLine(); summary = a.charAt(0); summary = Character.toUpperCase(summary); if (summary == 'Y') { System.out.println("\nCountry\t\tRate\t\tDollars\t\tAmount"); System.out.println("========\t\t=======\t\t=======\t\t========="); for (int i=0; i < Exchange.length; i++) System.out.println(Exchange[i]); Foreign.counter(); } } } I looked at line 43 and its this line: summary = a.charAt(0); But I am not sure what's wrong with it, can anyone point it out? Thank you.

• C++ printf std::vector

- by Sebtm
How I can do something like this in C++: void my_print(format_string) { vector<string> data; //Fills vector printf(format_string, data); } my_print("%1$s - %2$s - %3$s"); my_print("%3$s - %2$s); I have not explained well before. The format string is entered by the application user. In C# this works: void my_print(format_string) { List<string> data = new List<string>(); //Fills list Console.WriteLine(format_string, data.ToArray); } my_print("{0} - {1} - {2}"); my_print("{2} - {1}");

• Compress small strings, With what to create external dictionary?

- by Chris
I want to compress much small strings (about 75-100 length c# string). At the time the dictionary is created I already know all short strings (nearly a trillion). There will no additional short strings in future. I need to extra exactly one string without decompress other strings. Now I am looking for a library or the best way to do the following: Create a dictionary using all strings I have Using this dictionary to compress each string a way to compress one string using the dictionary from 1. I found a good related question, but this is not c# specific. Maybe there is something for c# I do not know, or a fancy library or someone has already done that. That is the reason I ask this question.

• URL decoding Japanese characters etc. in Java

- by DanieL
I have a servlet that receives some POST data. Because this data is x-www-form-urlencoded, a string such as ???? would be encoded to サボテン. How would I unencode this string back to the correct characters? I have tried using URLDecoder.decode("encoded string", "UTF-8"); but it doesn't make a difference. The reason I would like to unencode them, is because, before I display this data on a webpage, I escape & to & and at the moment, it is escaping the &s in the encoded string so the characters are not showing up properly.
