• What's the .proto equivalent of List<T> in protobuf-net?

  To keep some consistency, we use code generation for a lot of our object models, and one of the offshoots of that has been generating the .proto files for ProtocolBuffers via a separate generation module. At this point though, I'm stumped at how to implement the generation for when it happens upon a List<T> object. It looks like this is possible via contracts: [ProtoMember(1)] public List<SomeType> MyList {get; set;} but outside of that, I'm not sure how or if it's possible to do this only from creating the .proto file/using the VS custom tool. Any thoughts?

• Virtual Function Implementation

  Hi, I have kept hearing this statement. Switch..Case is Evil for code maintenance, but it provides better performance(since compiler can inline stuffs etc..). Virtual functions are very good for code maintenance, but they incur a performance penalty of two pointer indirections. Say i have a base class with 2 subclasses(X and Y) and one virtual function, so there will be two virtual tables. The object has a pointer, based on which it will choose a virtual table. So for the compiler, it is more like switch( object's function ptr ) { case 0x....: X->call(); break; case 0x....: Y->call(); }; So why should virtual function cost more, if it can get implemented this way, as the compiler can do the same in-lining and other stuff here. Or explain me, why is it decided not to implement the virtual function execution in this way? Thanks, Gokul.

• Action script 3 bitmap glitch, alpha fade in out

  I have actually solved this problem but it was a weird one so I will post it and my solution. I had a movie clip with several children each of which had it's own alpha settings. It also had a bitmap child object with a masked movie clip sitting on top of it. I was fading in and out the parent movie clip and was getting some odd results all of the alpha settings of the children were being removed and the bitmap was glitching and showing the contents of the masked object that was above it. The problem was that my alpha value for fully opaque was 100 (as in AS2) not 1 (as per AS3). It took me ages to work this out so hopefully this helps someone else.

In the "real" object I have: StreamWriter createFile( string name ) { return new StreamWriter( Path.Combine( _outFolder, name ), false, Encoding.UTF8 ) ); } In the mock object I'd like to have: StreamWriter createFile( string name ) { var ms = new MemoryStream(); _files.Add( Path.Combine( _outFolder, name ), ms ); return new StreamWriter( ms, Encoding.UTF8 ) ); } where _files is a dictionary to store created files for later inspection. However, when the consumer closes the StreamWriter, it also disposes the MeamoryStream... :-( Any thoughts on how to pursue this?

• Ruby Equivalent of Python Requests Library (HTTP Client)

  There is a library in python that I love called requests. requests is a http client build on urllib3, top-notch :) (http://docs.python-requests.org/en/latest/) I am looking for something similar in ruby, basically what I need is : Upload files support (multipart/form-data) Easy get/post Cookies can be passed from a response object to a request object (build manually login script) Stable and Flexible Sessions support (to not have to handle cookies manually if we don't have too) I've looked at Typhoeus, but the code example in the home page doesn't work (they have moved code along and the get method is not longer directly accessible like that), so it's not starting well! :) Curb seems nice and I like curl, there is alson RestClient which seems popular and em-http seems pretty fast according to benchmark. There is a aso Patron and CurlFu which I haven't have the time to try. And of course Net:Http. But it doesn't seems to have a main stream solution that everyone point. I think a lot of people have been in my situation and I wonder what they have choosen and why?

I can successfully change the style of another object type on this WebTextEdit ClientSide MouseMove event: document.getElementById("Object2").style.backgroundColor = '#F0F5F7'; But when I want to change the style of the WebTextEdit control: document.getElementById("WebTextEdit1").style.backgroundColor = '#F0F5F7'; Then nothing happens. When I execute the script on the same WebTextEdit Clientside for another object which is not a WebtextEdit: Object2.style.border='1px solid #FFE6A0'; Then it works. But when I want to change the WebtextEdit Clientside style: WebTextEdit1.style.border='1px solid #FFE6A0'; Then I get Error: Can't Eval WebTextEdit1.style.border='1px solid #FFE6A0';

• Flash AS3 - Dispatching Events from Parent Class to Child Class

  I think this is a pretty simply problem but I do not seem to be able to pull it off. Basically I have a parent class A, and a child class B. Class A instantiates class B with addChild. There is a shared object which is being updated from a java server (red5) that has an event listener attached to it in class A. I have a function in class A which will pass certain, specific updates from this shared object to class B. The problem occurs is that when class B is instantiated, the event listener from class A doesn't work anymore. I have not removed the event listener from A. Any thoughts?

• django search and filter in Google App Engine

  Hi, I'm trying to add filter and search to my site. It's exactly the same code as in another working django project. The difference is that this time I do it with app engine. my views: http://slexy.org/view/s21GMw2sh1 I have 2 problems: 1.) I get error: "'Query' object has no attribute 'all'" on line 59 in views. As I understand it's something to do with the fact that GAE queryset is different from django queryset. How can I fix that? 2.) If I have 'search' in my request.GET I also fall on line 54 in my views. This is because I can't search by Q object in GAE, I guess. How can I fix that? Thanks, Alex A.

• Why can't my main class see the array in my calender class

  This is a homework problem. I'm already 5 days late and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.. this is my 1st semester in Java and my first post on this site Here is the assignment.. Create a class called Calendar. The class should contain a variable called events that is a String array. The array should be created to hold 5 elements. Use a constant value to specify the array size. Do not hard code the array size. Initialize the array in the class constructor so that each element contains the string “ – No event planned – “. The class should contain a method called CreateEvent. This method should accept a String argument that contains a one-word user event and an integer argument that represents the day of the week. Monday should be represented by the number 1 and Friday should be represented by the number 5. Populate the events array with the event info passed into the method. Although the user will input one-word events, each event string should prepend the following string to each event: event_dayAppoinment: (where event_day is the day of the week) For example, if the user enters 1 and “doctor” , the first array element should read: Monday Appointment: doctor If the user enters 2 and “PTA” , the second array element should read: Tuesday Appointment: PTA Write a driver program (in a separate class) that creates and calls your Calendar class. Then use a loop to gather user input. Ask for the day (as an integer) and then ask for the event (as a one word string). Pass the integer and string to the Calendar object’s CreateEvent method. The user should be able enter 0 – 5 events. If the user enters -1, the loop should exit and your application should print out all the events in a tabular format. Your program should not allow the user to enter invalid values for the day of the week. Any input other than 1 – 5 or -1 for the day of the week would be considered invalid. Notes: When obtaining an integer from the user, you will need to use the nextInt() method on your Scanner object. When obtaining a string from a user, you will need to use the next() method on your Scanner object. • connection string reading data from excel in asp.net

  Hello, I am trying to read data from excel file in asp.net. I have added the connection string to webConfig file: <add name="xls" connectionString="Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=HPM_DB.xls;Extended Properties=Excel 8.0"/> But it shows me an errormessage when I run this query: string query = "Select * from [IO_Definition$]"; IO_Definition is the name of the spreadsheet in my excel file. I also added the excel file to the App_Data folder of the website. The error is: The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object 'IO_Definition$'. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly. The thing is, when I write the absolute path of the excel file in the connectionString it does work. Is there anyway I can make it work without writing the absolute path? Thanks, Greg

  Hi The major problem in .net programs is "How manage memory for best performance". so Microsoft use garbage collector in .net and with that, we don't need to do something for managing memory(or better say we can use GC easily) But when you develop big project(business app), you make too many tables and database for your own project. so if you use Linq-to-sql, we must build DataContext include hundred or more tables. That make problem for program when you create an object from datacontext, that object give big amount of memory. also we cant divide datacontext to datacontexts(cuz relation between tables) so "How manage datacontext and memory"?

  I'm just exploring ruby and was wondering about the theoretical possibility of adding a method to the class of an object. For example, define a method that takes in a parameter and would add a method to the class of that parameter (not just to the parameter object itself). Something like this example: class SomeClass end class AnotherClass end alpha = SomeClass.new beta = AnotherClass.new def AddHelloMethodTo param # This is where I'm trying to # add a method to the class of the parameter def param.class.Hello "Hello" end end AddHelloMethodTo alpha AddHelloMethodTo beta gamma = AnotherClass.new alpha.Hello beta.Hello gamma.Hello (Excuse me if I have syntax errors / typos I'm REALLY new to this!) Notice how I don't call the AddHelloMethodTo on gamma but I expect Hello to be defined because I added it to the class. Is this possible?

  Drupal propose completely different approach in web development (comparing with RoR like frameworks) and it is extremely good from development speed perspective. For example, it is quite easy to clone 90% of stackoverflow functionality using Drupal. But it has several big drawbacks: it is f''cking slow (100-400 requests per page) db structure very complicated, need at least 2 tables for easy content (entity) type, CCK fields very easy generate tons of new db tables anti-object oriented, rather aspect-oriented bad "view" layer implementation, no strange forward layouts and so on. After all this items I can say I like Drupal, but I would like something same, but more elegant and more object oriented. Probably something like http://drupy.net/ - drupal emulation on the top of django. P.S. I wrote this question not for new holy word flame, just write if you know alternative that uses something similar approach.

• Which containers / graphics components to use in a simple Java Swing game?

  I'm creating a simple labyrinth game with Java + Swing. The game draws a randomized labyrinth on the screen, places a figure in the middle, and the player is then supposed to find the way out by moving the figure with arrow-keys. As for now, I'm using a plain background and drawing the walls of the labyrinth with Graphics.drawLine(). I have a custom picture of the figure in a .gif file, which I load as a BufferedImage object. However, I want the player to see only part of the labyrinth at a time, and the screen should follow the figure in the game, as the player moves around. I'm planning to do this by creating an Image object of the whole labyrinth when it is created, and then "cutting" a square around the current position of the figure and displaying this with Graphics.drawImage(). I'm new with Swing though, and I can't figure out how to draw the figure at different positions "above" the labyrinth without redrawing the whole thing. Which container/component should I use for the labyrinth and then for the figure to achieve this?

  A nice feature in XSD is the IDREF restriction, e.g.: <xs:restriction base="xs:IDREF"> <xs:pattern value="[0-9a-zA-Z\-]+"/> </xs:restriction> I used this restriction with great benefit in a Java JAXWS-project. An object serialized in a SOAP XML datamodel can hold a reference (pointer) to another object in the same SOAP message. I want to try the same approach in a C# WCF-project, can it be done? On the web site Data Contract Schema Reference I can see e.g. Id ignored, Ref forbidden, but I am not sure whether I understand what that means.

  I'm trying to do an Update on my solution but I'm getting the following subversion error: SharpSvn.SvnFileSystemException: Working copy path 'Path_to_image/logo LoRes.jpg' does not exist in repository but I can see that the image is in the repository.   I'm looking for a barebones javascript example that demonstrates how the javascript plugin architecture works with large javascript libraries (such as raphael or jquery). In either scenario, you build plugins by ensuring your custom plugin follows this pattern: jQuery.fn.pluginName -- so assume I have a library: myLibrary = (function() { //my fancy javascript code return function() { //my return object }; }); How would fn be incorporated into the above myLibrary object to ensure that he resulting plugin is callable? I instantiate myLibrary like so: var lib = new myLibrary(); And now I have included a reference to my plugin in my page: myLibrary.fn.simplePlugin = function() { //more fancy code } So finally, I can just call: lib.simplePlugin(); Basically, what magic is actually occuring when the .fn is used during the creation of the plugin?

  Hi All I just setup up member ship roles and registration on my website with visual web developer using the tutorial on msdn. It works perfectly locally, but when i uploaded it to my server, I get the following page: "Server Error in '/' Application. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Configuration Error Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately. Parser Error Message: The connection name 'LocalSqlServer' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty. Source Error: [No relevant source lines] Source File: machine.config Line: 160 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.4200; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.4016 " Does anybody know why I'm seeing this and how I may go about fixinf this? EDIT: I have just looked at my web.config file after reading the following line in the error message: "The connection name 'LocalSqlServer' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty." ... And have noticed that the following element is completely empty: <connectionStrings/> // Is this one supposed to be empty? if not what should go here? In the error it implies it shouldn't be empty. Also, I don't know where I should place LocalSqlServer LATEST EDIT After changing DataSource to LocalHost i get the following error: Server Error in '/JTS' Application. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.   I have two datagridviews. So for the second one, i just copy-pasted the code from the first and changed where the difference was. But i get an error at the secod data grid when i want to view the result of my sql code. Translated in english the error show something like that there was no value given to at least one required parameter. • Is it possible to create ICriteria/ICriterion from LINQ or HQL?

The problem is that using Expression. methods (Expression.Or etc) is quite tedious (the method is generated and i have multiple or statements that have to be joined into an expression somehow). Is there a way to avoid using Expression.Or() and create ICrietrion / ICriteria using LINQ or HQL?

• Why connection in Python's DB-API does not have "begin" operation?

  Working with cursors in mysql-python I used to call "BEGIN;", "COMMIT;", and "ROLLBACK;" explicitly as follows: try: cursor.execute("BEGIN;") # some statements cursor.execute("COMMIT;") except: cursor.execute("ROLLBACK;") then, I found out that the underlying connection object has the corresponding methods: try: cursor.connection.begin() # some statements cursor.connection.commit() except: cursor.connection.rollback() Inspecting the DB-API PEP I found out that it does not mention the begin() method for the connection object, even for the extensions. Mysql-python, by the way, throws the Deprecation Warning, when you use the method. sqlite3.connection, for example, does not have the methd at all. And the question is why there is no such method in the PEP? Is the statement somehow optional, is it enough to invoke commit() instead?
