  • Ruby 1.9 Ramaze App Failing with "Illegal instruction"

    - by pkulak
I've got an app that I'm trying to get working again after wiping my system and installing Snow Leopard. I installed Ruby 1.9 from Macports (now a later version) and the dev server starts up just fine, but then dies on the first request, only telling me "Illegal instruction". I have no idea what's causing this or even how to go about debugging it. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Is Page-Loading Time Relevant?

    - by doug
Take this (ServerFault) page for instance. It has about 20 elements. When the last of these has loaded, the page is deemed "loaded"--but not before. This is certainly the protocol used by our testing service (which is among the small group of well-known vendors that offer that sort of service). Obviously this method is based on a clear, definite endpoint--therefore it's easy to apply w/ concomitant reliability. I think it's also the metric used by the popular Firefox plugin, 'YSlow.' For my employer's website, nearly always the last-to-load items are tracking code, tracking pixels, etc., so from the user's point of view--their perception--the page was "loaded" well before it had actually loaded based on the criterion used by our testing service (15-20% is a rough estimate). I'm sure i'm not the first person to consider this nor the first to wonder if it is causing micro-optimization while ignoring overall system-level, or user-perceived performance. So my question is, are there are other more practical (yet still reasonably precise) measures of page loading time?

  • Website with Microsites & Blog - recommendations

    - by pingu
Hi guys, I'm in the process of scoping a solution for an events organisation. Their main website features information about them and blog entries etc, but they hold major events which require microsites (domain.com/event). The microsites all have a different look-and-feel, different nav structure, and custom content-managed components. The one thing that's common across everything is the blog - it will have a category for each event under which users can post. The main site will display all blog posts, but the microsites will only display posts for their category. How would you guys implement this? The solution needs to be PHP, and my initial thought was CodeIgniter but if possible I'd like to avoid building the blog functionality - so I guess I could integrate it with EE or Wordpress. If anyone has any other suggestions they would be most appreciated.

  • Building a modular Website with Zend Framework: Am I on the right way?

    - by Oliver
Hi, i´m a little bit confused by reading all this posts an tutorials about staring with Zend, because there a so many different ways to solve a problem. I only need a feedback about my code to know if iam on the right way: To simply get a (hard coded) Navigation for my side (depending on who is logged in) i build a Controller Plugin with a postDispatch method that holds following code: public function postDispatch(Zend_Controller_Request_Abstract $request) { $menu = new Menu(); //Render menu in menu.phtml $view = new Zend_View(); //NEW view -> add View Helper $prefix = 'My_View_Helper'; $dir = dirname(__FILE__).'/../../View/Helper/'; $view->addHelperPath($dir,$prefix); $view->setScriptPath('../application/default/views/scripts/menu'); $view->menu = $menu->getMenu(); $this->getResponse()->insert('menu', $view->render('menu.phtml')); } Is it right that i need to set the helper path once again? I did this in a Plugin Controller named ViewSetup. There i do some setup for the view like doctype, headlinks, helper paths...(This step is from the book: Zend Framework in Action) The Menu class which is initiated looks like this: class Menu { protected $_menu = array(); /** * Menu for notloggedin and logged in */ public function getMenu() { $auth = Zend_Auth::getInstance(); $view = new Zend_View(); //check if user is logged in if(!$auth->hasIdentity()) { $this->_menu = array( 'page1' => array( 'label' => 'page1', 'title' => 'page1', 'url' => $view->url(array('module' => 'pages','controller' => 'my', 'action' => 'page1')) ), 'page2' => array( 'label' => 'page2', 'title' => 'page2', 'url' => $view->url(array('module' => 'pages','controller' => 'my', 'action' => 'page2')) ), 'page3' => array( 'label' => 'page3', 'title' => 'page3', 'url' => $view->url(array('module' => 'pages','controller' => 'my', 'action' => 'page3')) ), 'page4' => array( 'label' => 'page4', 'title' => 'page4', 'url' => $view->url(array('module' => 'pages','controller' => 'my', 'action' => 'page4')) ), 'page5' => array( 'label' => 'page5', 'title' => 'page5', 'url' => $view->url(array('module' => 'pages','controller' => 'my', 'action' => 'page5')) ) ); } else { //user is vom type 'client' //.. } return $this->_menu; } } Here´s my view script: <ul id="mainmenu"> <?php echo $this->partialLoop('menuItem.phtml',$this->menu) ?> </ul> This is working so far. My question is: is it usual to do it this way, is there anything to improve? I´m new to Zend and in the web are many deprecated tutorials which often is not obvious. Even the book is already deprecated where the autoloader is mentioned. Many thanks in advance

  • Elevate the weight of browsing history in Google Chrome's autocomplete

    - by maayank
Google Chrome has the feature of auto-completing web addresses while you type them in the address bar. Alas, it gives absurdly more weight to Google's own auto-suggest v.s. my own browsing history, which seems a bit foolish - if I regularly (i.e. twice a week) check a certain website with the keywords "foo bar ponies" in its url, it is reasonable to expect that I will want to visit that site again and not other sites. While a bit subjective, to the very least I would expect such URLs to be in the list Chrome suggests, even if not at the top. Is there some plugin/secret option that alters the default behavior?

  • How can I disable HTML5 content in popular browsers like Firefox and Chrome?

    - by HRJ
The bad thing about Flash video was that it required a third-party plugin to play the content. The good thing was I could select which content to play; using the click-to-play feature in Firefox and Chrome. But now that HTML5 video is getting popular, I see a lot of ads popping into view again. They are not only a distraction, they hog resources on my computer and make the fans spin full speed. Is there a way to disable HTML5 audio/video content by default, and enable it only selectively?

  • Regex to replace 'li' with 'option' without losing class and id attributes

    - by Earthman Web
    I am looking for a solution using preg_replace or similar method to change: <li id="id1" class="authorlist" /> <li id="id2" class="authorlist" /> <li id="id3" class="authorlist" /> to <option id="id1" class="authorlist" /> <option id="id2" class="authorlist" /> <option id="id3" class="authorlist" /> I think I have the pattern correct, but not sure how to do the replacement part... Here is the (wordpress) php code: $string = wp_list_authors( $args ); //returns list as noted above $pattern = '<li ([^>]*)'; $replacement = '?????'; echo preg_replace($pattern, $replacement, $string); Suggestions, please?

  • Is it possible to have tab completion of drop-down lists in web pages in Firefox?

    - by Nick Booker
Does anyone know of a Firefox plugin that would enable tab-completion (or some other key sequence like Alt-L) of items in drop-down lists in web forms? e.g. ou<TAB>in<TAB>s<TAB> for 'OurCompany - Internal Support' Vimperator's hints mode makes it very ergonomic to focus the drop-down list with a key sequence like f13 but the keyboard interface to the drop-down list still sucks. I very frequently have to pick items from a very long list with very long common prefixes among the entries (e.g. 30-40 starting with OurCompany -), which renders both the built-in keyboard interface and the mouse pretty slow and unergonomic. I basically want readline support for filling webforms!

  • Is it possible to dump the names of all the open files in notepad++ to a file?

    - by mark
So, I dragged and dropped multiple files onto notepad++. The files came from different directories and were selected using different criteria. So, I have many files open in Notepad++. Now I need to have a list of all the open files in another file. Right now, my only option is to script the decisions used to guide me in selecting the files in the first place. Which is probably the best in the long term, but I wonder if there is a quicky one in Notepad++. Some plugin magic or whatever. Suggesting another free editor which has this function is a good option too (not that I am going to ditch notepad++, God forbid)

  • Is there a way of disabled byte-range requests in Apache?

    - by Sam Minnée
I have a web page with a link to a PDF file (target="_blank"). If I click the link, the PDF reader just shows a grey screen within the Firefox browser. If I copy that link and manually open it in a new tab, the PDF will display correctly, and subsequent requests made by clicking the original link now work, suggesting that the problem occurs when loading the file into the cache. It appears as though the Adobe PDF reader plugin is making byte-range requests (I see lots of 206 responses) and I suspect that this may be the cause of the issue. I am running an Apache webserver. Has anyone had problems with Apache and Adobe's byte-range requests? Are there any workarounds? Perhaps a way of configuring Apache to ignore byte-range requests on PDFs?

Does anyone know if what I'm wanting is possible? Thanks.

  • feedback for programming newbies looking to build a social networking site?

    - by kgardnr
my partner and i are launching a social learning platform - the requirements have been mapped out and are quite basic/intuitive. we are familiar with html/css, and have some very basic understanding of php, but we would love some feedback on whether we should tackle this ourselves or not. we've built websites, but in the past relied mostly on pre-fab code, i.e. wordpress, ning, etc. we've been looking specifically at ruby for developing the network, but i haven't delved into it fully yet. we're looking for some guidance and feedback - e.g. thoughts on ruby on rails? what's the learning curve? are we getting in over our heads? thanks in advance!

  • Should I uniform different API calls to a single format before caching?

    - by bluedaniel
The problem is that I am recreating the social media widget/icons on http://about.me/bluedaniel (thats me). Anyhow there can be up to 6 or 7 different API calls on the page and obviously I am caching them, at the moment with Memcached. The question is, as they arrive in various formats and sizes (fb-json, linkedin-xml, wordpress-rss etc), should I universally format/convert them before storing it in the cache. At present I have recreated the html widget and then stored that, but I worry about saving huge blocks of html in the cache as it doesn't seem that smart.

  • SonicWALL NetExtender - Client Install?

    - by JArmani
We are about to push out a new VPN solution for our organization. One of the beautiful things we saw in SonicWALL's SSL-VPN was the thin, browser-based solution of NetExtender. Does anybody have experience with this? My specific concern is that, at least in Windows 7 during testing, it prompts for admin credentials to install the ActiveX NetExtender plugin, which is standard for installing anything in a Windows domain environment. But doesn't this mean I actually have to go in and install the client on all domain laptops that will be using the VPN in the field? They wouldn't actually be able to simply visit the site and run the client, as advertised? By the way, we're using the SonicWALL NSA 3500 device. We do have ManageEngine's Desktop Central, which can push out software installations, but it usually has to be in the form of a .MSI package. Is there any solution to this, besides hitting up all my organization's computers?

  • After binding Mac to AD, first login successfully creates mobile account and logs in, after that next login locks AD account

    - by user132844
Mac os x 10.7 and 10.8 AD Server 2008 R2 Binding using AD Plugin or dsconfigad -add mydomain -username myuser -ou "OU=Computers,OU=Sites,OU=Mysite,DC=mycompany,DC=com" Works fine. First login happens fine. Creates mobile account, no issues noticed. After I logout, the next login attempt fails, and after only shaking one time, their AD account is locked out. opendirectory.log makes a vague mention of account being expired but honestly I don't see much in the logs that pops out as useful. Any help?
