    So we have all heard of these overnight millionaires in the app store. We know it would be great, but somewhat unlikely to do ourselves. What I do know is, that learning and developing for the iPhone can sometimes be overwhelming. I continue to push on and learn more and more, even when my brain just cant take anymore I turn my mac on and read up on how to do new and different things I haven't done yet in my app yet. I would like to see a few post's of a common day developer's story and how their life has improved now that they are sitting up on the golden pedestal of an iphone developer. I look at these Dice.com jobs on think how nice it would be to be making that kind of money offered for an experienced iphone developer. Im on my way... and while I'm on that road i'd like to look over and see your story... Please include how you got into iPhone development and any apps you have out there and your success with them.   • Is the Windows dev environment worth the cost?

    I recently made the move from Linux development to Windows development. And as much of a Linux enthusiast that I am, I have to say - C# is a beautiful language, Visual Studio is terrific, and now that I've bought myself a trackball my wrist has stopped hurting from using the mouse so much. But there's one thing I can't get past: the cost. Windows 7, Visual Studio, SQL Server, Expression Blend, ViEmu, Telerik, MSDN - we're talking thousands for each developer on the project! You're definitely getting something for your money - my question is, is it worth it? [Not every developer needs all the aforementioned tools - but have you ever heard of anyone writing C# code without Visual Studio? I've worked on pretty large software projects in Linux without having to pay for any development tool whatsoever.] Now obviously, if you're already a Windows shop, it doesn't pay to retrain all your developers. And if you're looking to develop a Windows desktop app, you just can't do that in Linux. But if you were starting a new web application project and could hire developers who are experts in whatever languages you want, would you still choose Windows as your development platform despite the high cost? And if yes, why?

I'm working withTFS2012 and When I want to export an user story to excel I see the following error: "TF400422: Failed to open in Microsoft Excel: Error loading type library/Dll. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80029C4A (TYPE_E_CANTLOADLIBRARY))" I'm using Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010. I do most of my development in Visual Studio 2010 and also use Eclipse and Weblogic 10. Also planning to use WPF/Silverlight in the future. Will going for a i7 really benefit me or an i3 or an i5 will suffice for my needs?

  • Windows web server and SQL Server on same dedicated server

    I'm currently trying to decide on the best approach to handle hosting a few moderate traffic websites for production e-commerce and online applications. We'd like to move to a dedicated server and are looking at this as the most likely machine: Quad Core Intel Core2Quad Q9550 Processor, 2.83 Ghz X 4, 4 GB Kingston Ram This would run Windows Web Server 2008 R2 x64 and potentially also Sql Server Web 2008 and SmarterMail server. Given that we already pay for a high-end VPS for development, testing, shared version control we'd like to avoid going with two servers for production. We'd like to avoid using shared sql server hosting and have thought of using the development server as the database server as an option too - but potentially a security risk due to use for development by internal and contract users. The questions are: - Do you feel there would be performance degradation by running this on the same machine? - Are there significant issues to be concerned about if we do this? We understand that best practice would be to run separate db and app servers but the volume of traffic is currently not that high and adding another server just for database is currently too costly. - What are others doing out there? Alternatively, would you recommend instead going with two separate VPS servers with 2GB RAM each on Hyper-v which would be about the same cost as the single dedicated server above? Thanks!

  • iPad UIWebView PDF rendering is giving me weird visual artifacts

    I am having some difficulty using a UIWebView to render PDF files on the iPad. Everything works fine in portrait mode, but turning the device to landscape produces strange visual quirkiness. Zooming in (but not out) even the slightest will correct it, but obviously that's not an ideal workaround. The issue occurs with any PDF file (I have tried several, all stored locally in the bundle, not retrieved from the web). I also created a clone of the project for iPhone, which seems to work just fine, so the problem is iPad-specific. The problem occurs both in the simulator as well as on a physical iPad.   • Font Setting in VS2010 - missing FixedSys

    After installing VS2010 yesterday - (both VS2005 and VS2010 installed), I can't find the "FixedSys" style font from the Fonts and Colors - Font (pull down list). I can still use the font in VS2005. [update] I just searched "C:\WINDOWS\Fonts", there is no Fixedsys style in the folder. Any suggestions on how to make FixedSys available as a choice in Visual Studio 2010?

  • VSS: Move file from one folder to another?

    Is there a way in Visual SourceSafe to move a file from one directory to another while retaining its history? Edit I actually found a round about way to do this. First I drag the file I want to move to the directory I want to move it to, this creates a "Link" to the file there and then I "permanently destroy" the file in its original location. Does this actually do what I thing it does?

    I've currently got a ASP.NET MVC 2 application on .NET 3.5 and I want to migrate it over to the new .NET 4.0 with Visual Studio 2010. Reason being that it's always good to stay on top of these things - plus I really like the new automatic encoding with <%: %> and clean web.config :-) So, does anyone have any experience they could share? Looking for gotchas and the likes. I guess this could also apply to any ASP.NET Forms projects aswell. TIA, Charles

    I've just started getting this Javascript error running VS2010 with SL4 Error: Unhandled Error in Silverlight Application Code: 2104 Category: InitializeError Message: Could not download the Silverlight application. Check web server settings Everything was working fine, changed 1 line of code to use a RegularExpression in the web project (using the Silverlight Business Application template) then when rebuilding I get this error. Google says this is IIS and mimetype related. I'm using Cassini not IIS with VS2010. Rebooted, cleared xap from IE cache. Error on both IE and FF. What could be wrong?

    I have migrated a VS2008 ASP.NET MVC solution to VS2010/MVC2/.NET 4.0 The solution builds locally and all unit tests pass. Our TFS server is still TFS2008 and I am having problems getting the CI build to pass. The projects all build successfully, the unit tests all run and pass but the Running Tests item fails. Any suggestions as to why Visual Studio 2010's conversion wizard is doing this?

    I currently use AnkhSVN to integrate subversion into Visual Studio. Is there any reason I should switch to VisualSVN? AnkhSVN is free (in more than one sense of the word) while VisualSVN costs $50. So right there unless I'm missing some great feature of VisualSVN I don't see any reason to switch.

  • cPanel web servers mounting home partition to a NAS or SAN

    Hello, I currently have 2 cPanel web servers that are little 1RU dual cpu quad core xeons. They have a lot of resources for processing and handling web requests, and never exceed more than 10% cpu usage. They also have plenty of RAM. The problem is though that they both have RAID 1 160Gb SAS hard disk drives in them that are 75% full, and growing by the day. I didnt think that the amount of disk usage would be so high, but due to the nature of the sites hosted, this has become an issue. The easy fix would be just to upgrade the hard drives to something bigger (probably not of the SAS variety), but I am thinking of keeping the current machines as "processing servers" and buying a central "storage server" with about 12TB of storage. The /home/ partition on each of the 1RU servers would be mounted to a NAS or SAN point on this central storage server. My questions are: - Has anyone got a cPanel setup where they mount /home/ to a NAS or SAN elsewhere? If so, can you provide details as to what you did and how it went :) - Any recommendations on networking? Is gigabit ethernet enough? Is TCP/IP going to be a noticable performance problem? Anyone used a TOE key? - Anyone benchmarked or had any performance issues with SAN over NAS? Any help greatly appreciated. Scott

I am trying to use Rating Control from 3.0 Toolkit with VisualStudio 2008 Here are the problems: I am unable to see designer view after adding Rating Control and few other controls. I am not getting any errors or warnings on markup or while compiling. Trying to access Property window for any control is giving me this message " Property Editing not available". Is this the way silverlight was made available with Visual Studio or is there something I am missing here?

    I used to have DevPartner Profiler Community Edition installed on my machine, which was free to use indefinitely and was compatible with Visual Studio 2003. After I have rebuild my machine and downloaded a newer version (version 8.1) of the software, it turns out it is actually a 45 day trial eventhough it is still called a Community Edition.   • pros and cons with server management gui tools to manage linux web servers

    i have stumbled upon these GUI tools that could help you manage your linux server through a web interface. ebox, webmin, ispconfig, zivios, ispcp, plesk, cpanel etc. i wonder what the pros and cons are with these solutions. a lot of people is saying that they are not as good as using pure command line (ssh) to manage your server. but i think thats yet another "linux are for advanced users" talk. i agree that a lot of things may only be done with the command line by editing directly in the configuration files. but i don't really want to do that every time and for everything. especially basic configurations these could manage. its like not having phpmyadmin for managing mysql. it would be a pain in the ass right? so if one wants to throw up a web server serving a php site oneself developed and wants all the usual stuff up and running (mysql, phpmyadmin, svn, webdav etc) is these tools the right way to go? and for more advanced features, one just use the terminal like old days. is this a smart way of managing a linux server? and which one would you choose? have you used any of these and could share your thoughts about them?
