• Huwawei E220 broadband dongle not working

  The problem is, I have used Ubuntu from 6.10 upto 11.10. And upto 11.04 I used my same USB 3G dongle to connect to broadband and it worked fine. But 2 days ago I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 and broadband is not working. It detects my dongle and creates a connection without a problem, but when connecting it just keeps on and on for a long time and then say I'm offline. So I did a clean install and the same thing occurred. But I also have a netbook and its got Ubuntu 11.10. I tried using the same dongle for internet on that netbook and it worked fine without any issues. But this isn't a problem with my USB port on my main machine or something like that because I'm also using Windows on my main machine (dual-boot) and its working fine. My hardware: Main computer (one that I'm trying to connect): 2.8GHz dual core Intel 2GB RAM 500GB Sata II HDD 384MB Video Memory (Intel G31/G33 chipset) Ubuntu 11.10 (32bit) My NetBook (broadband working fine): 1.6GHz Intel Atom (dual core) 1GB DDR3 RAM 250GB HDD 128MB Video Memory (Intel something-I-can't-remember) Ubuntu 11.10 (32bit) My dongle is a Huawei E220 and ISP is Dialog GSM (I'm in Sri Lanka) So any idea why this is? • What's the fastest way to store/access large files?

  I do a lot of video editing on my Mac and need a way to store very large (30 GB) files, and don't have room on my HD. A USB/Firewire external hard drive would work, but it seems way too slow for consistently working with such large files. I've also considered buying another computer, with a large hard drive, and putting it on the same network with a shared folder. What's the fastest / most efficient way to do this? Please consider USB 2.0 speeds, hard drive read times, ethernet speeds, etc. Are there other options I should consider?

• Need to use wusa to stop endless rebooting on R2

  I installed 3 updates, which after rebooting resulted in a reboot loop, never going past the "configuring your computer for windows" stage. Last known good configuration, safe mode etc make no difference (as expected). I have no system restore images available. I used dism to uninstall one of the updates, but the other two appear to be MSP patches, and so I cannot use dism to uninstall them. From what I have been reading it appears I must use wusa, however wusa does not seem to be included in WinRE. Does anyone have a suggestion of how I can access wusa to uninstall these updates, and hopefully reverse this problem?

• Broadcom BCM4313 takes ages to connect

  I'm having issues with my broadcom BCM4313 wireless adapter. Everything works just fine when connected (with additional drivers & Connman), but it takes about 5 minutes to connect to my network when i just started my computer! When resuming from hibernation it goes very quick though, so just when I boot my pc it's taking forever...   iTunes <- iPhone. At sync time, a back-up is performed. Which data is included, which data is not? i.e. are songs (potentially redundant) backed-up so that a computer ends up having both the source file on the filesystem and the copy within the device back-up? Is anything on the iPhone filesystem not backed up? (i.e. on a Mac using Time Machine, some files are excluded from the back-up even if not all of them can be recreated upon restore - I lost my postfix config this way..)

How do I get the best quality?(Even if the difference is in fact so small it's neglectible) By making the music louder in my music player, game or other sound-producing software program. By raising the volume at the Operating System level (for instance, by clicking the 'speaker' icon on the windows bar and turning the volume up) By turning the volume up on the Amplifier or Speakers that are attached to your computer, and thus changing the volume on the 'hardware' Does programs vs OS matter? Many of my colleagues have shared their experiences with this productivity cancer to me in support groups or in moments of inebriated intimacy. Often, I observe friends unknowingly surrendering to it - sitting at their computer, cycling through the same set of web sites (blogs, facebook, youtube, news providers, wikipeida, etc.), over and over again. Intermittently, they get up, take a walk around the office, make small talk with their colleagues, get another cup of coffee, then sit down and start the cycle all over again. It is completely controlled by the subconscious mind and will destroy your ability to get into that groove you used to live in back in your better days. Programming requires extended periods of focused attention, and this type of behavior will really kill productivity and in the end, when deadlines are near, launch your stress level to near emotional breakdown levels.DiagnosisThe best way to diagnose infection is to completely disconnect your devices from the internet while working. If you find yourself launching web browsers every minute or so, then you're down with the sickness.TreatmentA few techniques I've found that will help send this ailment into regression are as follows:Segment your day into two to three hour work segments. For example: 9:00-11:00, 1:00-3:00, 3:30-5:00.Define a few small one to two hour tasks you want to accomplish in your day. • What music players (or related applications) are there that would allow displaying/editing embedded lyrics of music tracks?

  I use OSD Lyrics and CoverGloobus. They are good, they search and eventually download lyrics, when they can find them. The sources used by OSD Lyrics, for example, are rather limited (although I love the way it displays them. The latter accesses a reacher database, but the display is not adjustable as far as I know). Couldn't find a way to make these programs see lyrics from a file selected by me. What I want is to be able to add the lyrics myself, and even to embed them into the music file - and, of course, to display them from there. The last feature alone would be very valuable to me, as I have a large music database with lyrics already embedded, but I cannot see them with these programs: they are just looking for new lyrics on the Internet, although the lyrics are on my computer. In Windows I used Foobar2000 to find, display and embed lyrics (with the add-on lyricsgrabber) and when I needed to add the lyrics manually I used to embed them in MediaMonkey (this player allows finding them, but also editing and embedding - just by copy/paste). I am not able to run MediaMonkey in Wine. Foobar works, but with a lot of problems. And anyway, Wine is of last resort. I am looking for a Linux program that would be able to do something similar to what I have described above.

• Fixing restore active desktop on windows xp

All I know is that the computer crashed from a power outage. I've tried clicking the restore button and rebooting. Nothing. What else is there to try? Would like to have the desktop back. It powers on fine. I can login and use windows just fine. Just you get that annoying restore active desktop screen.

• suddenly can't connect to windows 7 pc from xbmc

  I have xbmc installed on a softmodded classic xbox and all of a sudden I cannot connect to the shared folders on my windows 7 PC. Well, it can connect but it wants a username and password, but none exist on my computer. It's been several weeks since I last used it, but it was working fine then! and no particular changes I can think of aside from I guess a few windows updates. I've seen reference online to windows live essentials causing issues with file sharing, but I don't even have that installed. And I made sure to tick 'turn off password protected sharing' in my advanced network setup. I had the guest account turned off and working fine before, and tried turning it on but no luck. I can access my shared folders fine from other Computers and a ps3. I've read a couple threads of similar situations on various folders and none of their solutions have worked.

• DVI to HDMI - displaying bad.

  I currently have a computer with a ASUS EAH5770 (ATi Radeon HD 5770) 1GB GDDR5 video card, and 4GB ram, 2.6 GHZ i5 processor. I just switched from a DVI (the blue one) to an HDMI cable. (Bigben Flat cable HDMI 1.3c) I use a Samsung SyncMaster 2032 MW, which has a HDMI input. The weird thing is, that my screen is off-the-corner of the tv (so it's too wide) (1920x1080), and windows icons and text are not displaying well, though 1080p videos in YouTube are looking brilliant, just like pictures. So i think it has something to do with Windows. I already have the ATI Catalyst Control Center with the drivers i received with my video card. I do not currently know how to fix these problems. Do i have to reinstall Windows or so? Or is it (hopefully) easier?

• accidentally concatenate a large file on a remote system

  Every once in a while on a computer I'm ssh'd into, I will accidentally type "cat largefile.txt" and my screen will start rushing with text for the next 10 minutes. I'm always working in a screen session, so my current solution is to just log out and then log back in, and since it can go 100X faster when I'm logged out, it'll finish in the short time it takes me to type my password in again. Is there a better way? Either involving the fact I'm in a screen session? Or a way to do this within SSH? What doesn't work: detaching from the screen session (doesn't respond until file is done outputting) trying command to move to a different window in the screen session (also doesn't respond) typing ctrl+C to kill cat command (also doesn't respond, probably because the command is done and the buffers just have to catch up)

  Hi Guys, I've got the following computer and I've just put in a new CPU QX9650 and I've run into this problem since making this hardware change. Whenever I put more than 1 of my 4 sticks of ram into my machine it wont load an OS. It'll go through the BIOS but BSOD on windows load. It also wont let me install an OS from disk or boot into Linux. I've ran memtest with all 4 sticks in and I get 10k+ errors on test5. Each stick of ram on it's own is fine and functions properly. I only have problems when all 4 sticks are in the machine at the same time. System specs.. CPU: QX9650 Mobo: Asus P5B 2104 BIOS RAM: 2xPC25400 DDR2 , 2xPC2 6400 both OCZ. Is the problem on my end or is the CPU faulty?

• Bizarre SSH Problem - It won't even start

  I recently got Ubuntu 12.04 Precise, got it up and running with some MediaWiki software, static IP on the box and router and was able to access the main page even from a cell phone. Everything seemed great... Then I wanted to finally get rid of the monitor and keyboard and login remotely via SSH. I installed openssh-server, let everything point to port 22 for a test run and installed putty on my Windows XP machine. I got a connection refused. Went back and started checking the Ubuntu install itself... (I'm under root from this point on) $ sudo -s $ service ssh status ssh stop/waiting $ service ssh start ssh start/running, process 2212 $ service ssh status ssh stop/waiting Apparently ssh has stopped or is waiting for something.... $ ssh localhost ssh: connect to host localhost port 22: Connection refused I can't even connect to myself... I checked ufw (firewall) to see if port 22 is doing alright... $ sudo ufw status Status: active To Action From 22 ALLOW Anywhere 22/tcp ALLOW Anywhere 22 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) 22/tcp ALLOW Anywhere (v6) sshd_config shows only Port 22 Is ssh not using the right IP address at all? I just don't get what I did wrong here. When this is up and running I will def change the port number, but for now, I don't want to mess with the default install too much until a test run with putty is successful. Edit: Here are my sshd_config file and my ssh_config file. The command /usr/sbin/sshd -p 22 -D -d -e returns: /etc/ssh/sshd_config line 159: Subsystem 'sftp' already defined. Edit: @phoibus moving the sshd_config file and reinstalling did the trick! service ssh status the above command shows that ssh is now running and I am now able to log in from my windows xp computer remotely via putty. Thanks so much! I can now use my monitor for other things!

• Compaq Q2009 monitor display Issues

  I have this compaq q2009 monitor 20' inches and I am having display issues. When I turn on the computer the image is displayed fine for a fraction of a second and then the display goes black. If I turn off the monitor and turn it on again the the same thing happens: the image is displayed for a fraction of a second and then goes black. This is odd. I've looked all over the web and I haven't found anything useful (not even in the HP website). So there is no "out of range" or "recommended resolution" message. It just displays and then goes black. I think the resolution is fine because it was working OK until recently and I haven't changed anything in that regard. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Sharing VPN from XP to Linux virtual

  Hi I will keep the question simple with few details, if more is needed tell me. Thanks. I am playing around with networking and virtualbox. So I have 2 virtual machines. One is windows xp and another has linux in it. Windows XP has 2 network cards. One for the internet and the other to connect to the linux computer. Linux has one 1 card and it can only access the internet passing through Windows XP. Internet works fine until I activate OpenVPN on Windows. When I turn on VPN, Linux has no access to it. How can I make linux use VPN too? I believe it has something to do with using the "route" command on XP to send VPN traffic to Linux but I was not able to figure it out how yet.

This connection is distributed from the server several sub-networks / subnets as follows: Faculty: 172.33....../ 255.255.0.0 Administration: 172.34......./255.255.255.0 Students: 172.35...../255.255.216.0 A student has a laptop with a fixed IP address 172.35.23.123 / 255.255.216.0 where the IP address is on the ethernet port. The gateways for internet access are 172.31.1.1 and 172.31.1.2. Further the student has a wireless port which is inaccessible in the hostel area. The OS of the student is Ubuntu 12.10. The student in the possession of an android phone on which he wishes to install specific software and therefore wishes to activate the internet therein. The student has already attempted the Wireless hotspot solution which works for 12.04 but has not been successful. • Connecting to SQL Server on Parallels Desktop with PHP

  well I recently bought a Mac and am using it as my primary computer. Because I am required to work with MSSQL via PHP, I have installed Parallels Desktop and run Server 2008 R2 on it. I am using the same mixed mode authentication which I previously had on windows. When I attempt to connect to the server with PHP using either a new test file or my old code, it just doesn't find the server. I have tried running PHP on the XP install with parallels, and using the hostname as COMPUTERNAME\SQLEXPRESS, LOCALIP\SQLEXPRESS localhost localip etc, PHP never finds the server. Also note that I can connect to the database server using Management Studio without problems, so SQL Server is running. Please note that both PHP and MSSQL are running within the virtualised environment. Any contribution is appreciated

• How do I log which process is deleting a file on Windows XP?

  I'm having an issue with a file getting deleted seemingly randomly throughout the day. The vendor of the software whose file is getting deleete says that another piece of software installed on the computer is deleting it, while the other software's vendor says the opposite. I've tried using Process Monitor so I can pinpoint exactly what's deleting it, but even when filtered specifically to that file, createfile operations are being triggered a few times a second, and I can't seem to filter it to deletions specifically. Is there a tool or script I can use to specifically monitor deletion attempts on a single file?

• Creating a bootable flash without overlayfs

  I want to create an USB stick to carry my Ubuntu everywhere around with me. It's not intended to spread Ubuntu by installing it everywhere, but rather for running my configured system on any computer I come across. So far, I went with installing Ubuntu with unetbootin, however, I have some issues with this. When installed with netbootin, the original disk image is kept intact on the flash drive, forever. Also, a file is created for persistent storage and during boot it is accessed together with the image by overlayfs. This, in my opinion, has the following problems: If system is updated regularly, then files from the image are overwritten in persistent storage, doubling their size and wasting precious space. Persistent storage has a fixed size that you have to define from the start, again, wasting precious space. I'm not 100% sure, but maybe using overlayfs makes disk access slower, and more so on the relatively slow devices. So I'd like to find another solution: either to get rid of the original image or to install Ubuntu "normally" on the separate ext2 partition, or maybe even install it in the main vfat partition on the USB stick. Suggestions?

  When I format the computer and reinstall Windows, my first step is move the "my documents" folder to another partition. In Windows XP it wasn't enough because the desktop folder and another user folders was in the primary partition. Now in Windows Seven and Vista we can use HardLinks to "move" the folder to another partition and Windows and another programs will think that the data is in the primary parition. What the fastest and secure steps to move the Users folder to another partition and to create the hardlinks correctly? Thank you very much!

• First Installation

  I had windows xp on my desktop originally. Yesterday we were able to replace this with Ubuntu 12.04 from a thumb drive. The live CD did not work. I am more familiar with the system they introduced me to in School recently. Linux pretty much has similarity all around so I am finding the differences not as much of an issue. So, there were a few issues with the installation and getting Grub to start working. There is the low graphics issue which brings us to the command line basics. I am a little familiar with linux so it isn't too intimidating; I am really good with step by step instructions in simple order. My question is Ubuntu installed with out any basic driver's or generic header's. It also is not connecting my computer to the internet. My system is older not new. For the time it had above average parts. How do I solve the problem of Getting the header's, making sure the right configurations are set, and where do I get the driver's for my white box desktop to run Ubuntu properly? Thank you
