  • [Java] Safe way of exposing keySet().

    - by Jake
    This must be a fairly common occurrence where I have a map and wish to thread-safely expose its key set: public MyClass { Map<String,String> map = // ... public final Set<String> keys() { // returns key set } } Now, if my "map" is not thread-safe, this is not safe: public final Set<String> keys() { return map.keySet(); } And neither is: public final Set<String> keys() { return Collections.unmodifiableSet(map.keySet()); } So I need to create a copy, such as: public final Set<String> keys() { return new HashSet(map.keySet()); } However, this doesn't seem safe either because that constructor traverses the elements of the parameter and add()s them. So while this copying is going on, a ConcurrentModificationException can happen. So then: public final Set<String> keys() { synchronized(map) { return new HashSet(map.keySet()); } } seems like the solution. Does this look right?

  • Wordpress issue with footer

    - by Raelona
    I've been trying to turn my simple html/css site into a wordpress site. my big issue which no one seem to be able to solve appears in my footer. The footer is pretty much ignoring everything and just staying in the top of the site ( like it was a part of my header). All my files is split into 3 files. A header.php a footer.php and the page.php (one for each site). Header! <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" <?php language_attributes(); ?>> <head profile="http://gmpg.org/xfn/11"> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="<?php bloginfo('html_type'); ?>; charset=<?php bloginfo('charset'); ?>" /> <?php if (is_search()) { ?> <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow" /> <?php } ?> <title> <?php if (function_exists('is_tag') && is_tag()) { single_tag_title("Tag Archive for &quot;"); echo '&quot; - '; } elseif (is_archive()) { wp_title(''); echo ' Archive - '; } elseif (is_search()) { echo 'Search for &quot;'.wp_specialchars($s).'&quot; - '; } elseif (!(is_404()) && (is_single()) || (is_page())) { wp_title(''); echo ' - '; } elseif (is_404()) { echo 'Not Found - '; } if (is_home()) { bloginfo('name'); echo ' - '; bloginfo('description'); } else { bloginfo('name'); } if ($paged>1) { echo ' - page '. $paged; } ?> </title> <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" /> <link rel="stylesheet" href="<?php bloginfo('stylesheet_url'); ?>" type="text/css" /> <link rel="pingback" href="<?php bloginfo('pingback_url'); ?>" /> <?php if ( is_singular() ) wp_enqueue_script( 'comment-reply' ); ?> <?php wp_head(); ?> </head> <body <?php body_class(); ?>> <div id="Menu" ></div> <div id="Mainbody"> <div id="Portfolio"><a href="<?php echo get_option('home'); ?>"><?php bloginfo('name'); ?></a> </div> <div id="Slogan"><a href="index.html"><?php bloginfo('description'); ?></a></div> <div id="nav-menu"> <?php $defaults = array( 'theme_location' => '', 'menu' => '', 'container' => 'div', 'container_class' => 'menu-{menu slug}-container', 'container_id' => '', 'menu_class' => 'menu', 'menu_id' => '', 'echo' => true, 'fallback_cb' => 'wp_page_menu', 'before' => '', 'after' => '', 'link_before' => '', 'link_after' => '', 'items_wrap' => '<ul id="%1$s" class="%2$s">%3$s</ul>', 'depth' => 0, 'walker' => '' ); ?> <?php wp_nav_menu( $defaults ); ?> </div> <div class="Box"> <div id="Mainindhold"> page ! <?php get_header(); ?> <div id="Arbejde"> <h2>Uddrag af mine webdesigns</h2> <br /> <br /> <?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> <?php $key='link'; $custom = get_post_meta($post->ID, $key, true); ?> <?php $key2='brugt'; $custom2 = get_post_meta($post->ID, $key2, true); ?> <?php $key3='linkexternal'; $custom3 = get_post_meta($post->ID, $key3, true); ?> <?php $billede = get_the_post_thumbnail($post->ID, 'full'); ?> <div class="Raekke"> <div class="Arbejds_Billede"> <a href="<?php echo $custom; ?>" rel="lightbox"> <?php print $billede; ?></a> </div> <div class="Arbejdsbeskrivelse"> <h3><?php the_title(); ?></h3> <?php the_content(); ?> <div id="program"> <img src="<?php echo $custom2; ?>" /> </div> <div class="Knap"><a href="<?php echo $custom3; ?>"><p>Besøg siden</p></a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="clear"></div> <?php endwhile; else: ?> <?php _e('No posts were fond.   • Help me build a CouchDB mapreduce

    - by mit
    There are CouchDB documents that are list elements: { "type" : "el", "id" : "1", "content" : "first" } { "type" : "el", "id" : "2", "content" : "second" } { "type" : "el", "id" : "3", "content" : "third" } There is one document that defines the list: { "type" : "list", "elements" : ["2","1"] , "id" : "abc123" } As you can see the third element was deleted, it is no longer part of the list. So it must not be part of the result. Now I want a view that returns the content elements including the right order. The result could be: { "content" : ["second", "first"] } In this case the order of the elements is already as it should be. Another possible result: { "content" : [{"content" : "first", "order" : 2},{"content" : "second", "order" : 1}] } I started writing the map function: map = function (doc) { if (doc.type === 'el') { emit(doc.id, {"content" : doc.content}); //emit the id and the content exit; } if (doc.type === 'list') { for ( var i=0, l=doc.elements.length; i<l; ++i ){ emit(doc.elements[i], { "order" : i }); //emit the id and the order } } } This is as far as I can get. Can you correct my mistakes and write a reduce function? Remember that the third document must not be part of the result.

  • Does the managed main UI thread stay on the same (unmanaged) Operation System thread?

    - by Daniel Rose
    I am creating a managed WPF UI front-end to a legacy Win32-application. The WPF front-end is the executable; as part of its startup routines I start the legacy app as a DLL in a second thread. Any UI-operation (including CreateWindowsEx, etc.) by the legacy app is invoked back on the main UI-thread. As part of the shutdown process of the app I want to clean up properly. Among other things, I want to call DestroyWindow on all unmanaged windows, so they can properly clean themselves up. Thus, during shutdown I use EnumWindows to try to find all my unmanaged windows. Then I call DestroyWindow one the list I generate. These run on the main UI-thread. After this background knowledge, on to my actual question: In the enumeration procedure of EnumWindows, I have to check if one of the returned top-level windows is one of my unmanaged windows. I do this by calling GetWindowThreadProcessId to get the process id and thread id of the window's creator. I can compare the process id with Process.GetCurrentProcess().Id to check if my app created it. For additional security, I also want to see if my main UI-thread created the window. However, the returned thread id is the OS's ThreadId (which is different than the managed thread id). As explained in this question, the CLR reserves the right to re-schedule the managed thread to different OS threads. Can I rely on the CLR to be "smart enough" to never do this for the main UI thread (due to thread-affinity of the UI)? Then I could call GetCurrentThreadId to get the main UI-thread's unmanaged thread id for comparison.

  • before filter not working as expected

    - by Jimmy
    Hey guys I have a ruby on rails app with a before filter setup in my application controller to ensure only the owner can edit a document, but my permission check is always failing even when it shouldn't. Here is the code: def get_logged_in_user id = session[:user_id] unless id.nil? @current_user = User.find(id) end end def require_login get_logged_in_user if @current_user.nil? session[:original_uri] = request.request_uri flash[:notice] = "You must login first." redirect_to login end end def check_current_user_permission require_login logger.debug "user id is #{params[:user_id]}" logger.debug "current user id is #{session[:user_id]}" if session[:user_id] != params[:user_id] flash[:notice] = "You don't have permission to do that." redirect_to :controller => 'home' end end The code to note is in the check_current_user_permission. Here is an example of my log output: user id is 3 current user id is 3 Redirected to http://localhost:3000/home Filter chain halted as [:check_current_user_permission] rendered_or_redirected. Can anyone shed some light into why this is failing? Obviously the user_id of 3 is equal to the session's user_id of 3. What is going wrong?

  • Adding extra data to a Variable

    - by DogPooOnYourShoe
    Right now, my code plucks out only one value using Mysql. So I thought I might aswell add each found result to a variable, however I dont know how to do this. This must be a very basic question, but I cant find a answer for it echo '<table border="1">'; echo "<tr><td><b>Surname</b></td><td><b>Title/Name</b></td><td><b>Numbers</b></td><td><b>Telephone</b></td><td><b>Edit</b></td><td><b>Del</b></td></tr>\n"; while ($row= mysql_fetch_array($result)) { $Surname = $row["Surname"]; $Title = $row["TitleName"]; $Email = $row["Email"]; $Telephone = $row["Telephone"]; $id = $row["id"]; $MooringNumbers = $row['Number']; $Assignedto['AssignedTo']; } $MooringQuery = "select * FROM mooring WHERE AssignedTo='$id'"; $MooringResult = mysql_query($MooringQuery) or die("Couldn't execute query"); while ($row1= mysql_fetch_array($MooringResult)) { $AssignedTo = $row1["AssignedTo"]; $MooringNumbers = $row1["Number"]; echo '<tr><td>' .$Surname.'</td><td>'.$Title.'</td><td>'.$MooringNumbers . '</td><td>'.$Telephone.'</td><td>' . '<a href="rlayCustomerUpdtForm.php?id='.$id.'">[EDIT]</a></td>'.'<td>'. '<a href="deleteCustomer.php?id='.$id.'">[x]</a></td>'. '</tr>'; }

  • MySQL PHP | "SELECT FROM table" using "alphanumeric"-UUID. Speed vs. Indexed Integer / Indexed Char

    - by dropson
    At the moment, I select rows from 'table01' using: SELECT * FROM table01 WHERE UUID = 'whatever'; The UUID column is a unique index. I know this isn't the fastest way to select data from the database, but the UUID is the only row-identifier that is available to the front-end. Since I have to select by UUID, and not ID, I need to know what of these two options I should go for, if say the table consists of 100'000 rows. What speed differences would I look at, and would the index for the UUID grow to large, and lag the DB? Get the ID before doing the "big" select 1. $id = "SELECT ID FROM table01 WHERE UUID = '{alphanumeric character}'"; 2. $rows = SELECT * FROM table01 WHERE ID = $id; Or keep it the way it is now, using the UUID. 1. SELECT FROM table01 WHERE UUID '{alphanumeric character}'; Side note: All new rows are created by checking if the system generated uniqueid exists before trying to insert a new row. Keeping the column always unique. The "example" table. CREATE TABLE Table01 ( ID int NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, UUID char(15), name varchar(100), url varchar(255), `date` datetime ) ENGINE = InnoDB; CREATE UNIQUE INDEX UUID ON Table01 (UUID);

  • What prevents a user from adding controls to an ASP.NET page client side?

    - by Curtis White
    This goes back to my other question which I thought was sufficiently answers but upon reflect am not sure that it was (sorry). Backgrounder: I am generating a form dynamically. I am pulling from the database the controls. I must associate each control with a database ID which is not the user's session id. I do this currently by storing my ID in the ID for the web control with some other stuff to make it unique/clear what I am doing. On the post back, I iterate through all the controls on my web page checking for my special identifier, ie, MyGeneratedTextBox_ID_Unique. This process enables for 2 important steps, identifying the control was one I generated and also getting the ID for this input field. And, all of this works but I'm still concerned about the security of it. I do not see a security issue with showing the actual database ID's in this case, although agree it is not desirable. However, I am concerned of the following possibilities: If a user could add a nefarious control to my collection and use that for a SQL injection attack. More academic, but if a user could somehow store data for fields they do not have access too by changing the id's. I agree this is a "hack" of a way to do it. But my question is, is it a security risk and is there an 'easy' way to do it in a less hack way? I assume that only the controls that are created/instantiated on the page are added to the controls list.. thus all controls must be created server side and thus the security issue is address but just wanted to validate. Thanks again. PS: I could see adding a property for each control and encrypting the viewstate would be a little more secure.

    I had a query working just fine, but after converting it to PDO I am getting no results when I do a var_dump($row). But there are no error messages. Can anyone see what I might be doing wrong? //Here is the original query that worked fine and returned results global $wpdb; $results = $wpdb->get_results("SELECT stories.story_name, stories.category, stories.SID, wp_users.ID, wp_users.display_name FROM stories LEFT JOIN wp_users ON stories.ID=wp_users.ID where stories.active = 1"); //Here is the query in PDO form which returns no results $results = $dbh->prepare("select wp_users.ID, wp_users.display_name, stories.SID, stories.story_name, stories.category, FROM stories LEFT JOIN wp_users ON stories.ID=wp_users.ID WHERE stories.active=1"); $results->bindParam(':wp_users.ID', $user_ID, PDO::PARAM_INT); $results->bindParam(':display_name', $display_name, PDO::PARAM_STR); $results->bindParam(':stories.SID', $SID, PDO::PARAM_INT); $results->bindParam(':story_name', $story_name, PDO::PARAM_STR); $results->bindParam(':category', $category, PDO::PARAM_STR); $results->execute(); $row = $results->fetchAll(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC); //returns 0 results but should return 8 as original code above did echo var_dump($row);

  • Unicode version of base64 encoding/ decoding

    - by Yan Cheng CHEOK
    I am using base64 encoding/decoding from http://www.adp-gmbh.ch/cpp/common/base64.html It works pretty well with the following code. const std::string s = "I Am A Big Fat Cat" ; std::string encoded = base64_encode(reinterpret_cast<const unsigned char*>(s.c_str()), s.length()); std::string decoded = base64_decode(encoded); std::cout << _T("encoded: ") << encoded << std::endl; std::cout << _T("decoded: ") << decoded << std::endl; However, when comes to unicode namespace std { #ifdef _UNICODE typedef wstring tstring; #else typedef string tstring; #endif } const std::tstring s = _T("I Am A Big Fat Cat"); How can I still make use of the above function? Merely changing std::string base64_encode(unsigned TCHAR const* , unsigned int len); std::tstring base64_decode(std::string const& s); will not work correctly. (I expect base64_encode to return ASCII. Hence, std::string should be used instead of std::tstring)

  • Cast exception being generated when using the same type of object

    - by David Tunnell
    I was previously using static variables to hold variable data that I want to save between postbacks. I was having problems and found that the data in these variables is lost when the appdomain ends. So I did some research and decided to go with ViewStates: static Dictionary<string, linkButtonObject> linkButtonDictonary; protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (ViewState["linkButtonDictonary"] != null) { linkButtonDictonary = (Dictionary<string, linkButtonObject>)ViewState["linkButtonDictonary"]; } else { linkButtonDictonary = new Dictionary<string, linkButtonObject>(); } } And here is the very simple class I use: [Serializable] public class linkButtonObject { public string storyNumber { get; set; } public string TaskName { get; set; } } I am adding to linkButtonDictionary as a gridview is databound: protected void hoursReportGridView_OnRowDataBound(Object sender, GridViewRowEventArgs e) { if (e.Row.RowType == DataControlRowType.DataRow) { LinkButton btn = (LinkButton)e.Row.FindControl("taskLinkButton"); linkButtonObject currentRow = new linkButtonObject(); currentRow.storyNumber = e.Row.Cells[3].Text; currentRow.TaskName = e.Row.Cells[5].Text; linkButtonDictonary.Add(btn.UniqueID, currentRow); } } It appears that my previous issues are resolved however a new one has arisin. Sometime when I postback I am getting this error: [A]System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary2[System.String,linkButtonObject] cannot be cast to [B]System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary2[System.String,linkButtonObject]. Type A originates from 'mscorlib, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' in the context 'LoadNeither' at location 'C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\assembly\GAC_32\mscorlib\v4.0_4.0.0.0__b77a5c561934e089\mscorlib.dll'. I don't understand how there can be a casting issue when I am using the same class everywhere. What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?

  • Java: JGraphT: Iterate through nodes

    I'm trying to iterate through all nodes, so I can print them out for graphviz. What is the best way to do that using the JGraphT library? public static void main(String[] args) { UndirectedGraph<String, DefaultEdge> g = new SimpleWeightedGraph<String, DefaultEdge>(DefaultEdge.class); String odp = "ODP"; String cck = "CCK"; String mfe = "MFE"; g.addVertex(odp); g.addVertex(cck); g.addVertex(mfe); g.addEdge(odp, cck); g.addEdge(odp, mfe); } Also, how do I add edge weights? • Elegant and 'correct' multiton implementation in Objective C?

    - by submachine
    Would you call this implementation of a multiton in objective-c 'elegant'? I have programmatically 'disallowed' use of alloc and allocWithZone: because the decision to allocate or not allocate memory needs to be done based on a key. I know for sure that I need to work with only two instances, so I'm using 'switch-case' instead of a map. #import "Multiton.h" static Multiton *firstInstance = nil; static Multiton *secondInstance = nil; @implementation Multiton + (Multiton *) sharedInstanceForDirection:(char)direction { return [[self allocWithKey:direction] init]; } + (id) allocWithKey:(char)key { return [self allocWithZone:nil andKey:key]; } + (id)allocWithZone:(NSZone *)zone andKey:(char)key { Multiton **sharedInstance; @synchronized(self) { switch (key) { case KEY_1: sharedInstance = &firstInstance; break; case KEY_2: sharedInstance = &secondInstance; break; default: [NSException raise:NSInvalidArgumentException format:@"Invalid key"]; break; } if (*sharedInstance == nil) *sharedInstance = [super allocWithZone:zone]; } return *sharedInstance; } + (id) allocWithZone:(NSZone *)zone { //Do not allow use of alloc and allocWithZone [NSException raise:NSObjectInaccessibleException format:@"Use allocWithZone:andKey: or allocWithKey:"]; return nil; } - (id) copyWithZone:(NSZone *)zone { return self; } - (id) retain { return self; } - (unsigned) retainCount { return NSUIntegerMax; } - (void) release { return; } - (id) autorelease { return self; } - (id) init { [super init]; return self; } PS: I've not tried out if this works as yet, but its compiling cleanly :)

Here is the code $('a').click(function() { var id = $(this).attr('class'); if(id == 'first') { $('.active').removeClass('active'); $('a.first').addClass('active'); } else if(id == 'second') { $('.active').removeClass('active'); $('a.second').addClass('active'); } $('#first').toggle(id == 'first'); $('#second').toggle(id == 'second'); });? <a class="first">one</a> <a class="second">two</a> <div> <li id="first"> <h2>pen</h2> <div> <div>parker</div> </div> </li> <li id="second" style="display: none;"> <h2>car</h2> <div>Bugatti</div> </div> </li> </div>? .active { color: green; }

  • Textarea (asp:Textbox TextMode="Multiline") overlapping buttons

    - by Gogster
    Hi all, I'm having this problem with form buttons overlapping an asp:Texbox with TextMode set to multi-line: Here is the code: <asp:Panel ID="pnlGiftStep" Visible="false" runat="server"> <img src="/images/shopping-cart/form-separator.png" alt="separator" /> <div class="form-title">GIFT OPTIONS</div> <div class="row"> <asp:TextBox ID="txtGiftName" Height="31" Width="323" BorderStyle="None" Font-Names="Arial" Font-Size="116.7%" runat="server"></asp:TextBox> <cc1:TextBoxWatermarkExtender ID="wmeGiftName" TargetControlID="txtGiftName" WatermarkText="Gift Name" WatermarkCssClass="watermark" runat="server"></cc1:TextBoxWatermarkExtender> </div> <br class="clear" /> <div class="row"> <asp:TextBox ID="txtGiftMessage" Rows="5" Width="323" BorderStyle="None" Font-Names="Arial" TextMode="MultiLine" Font-Size="116.7%" runat="server"></asp:TextBox> <cc1:TextBoxWatermarkExtender ID="wmeGiftMessage" TargetControlID="txtGiftMessage" WatermarkText="Gift Message" WatermarkCssClass="watermark" runat="server"></cc1:TextBoxWatermarkExtender> </div> <br class="clear" /> <div class="button-row"> <asp:ImageButton ID="imbShippingDetails" ImageUrl="/images/shopping-cart/ship-details-btn.png" OnClick="ReturnToShipping" ValidationGroup="shipping" runat="server" /> <asp:ImageButton ID="imbPayDetails" ImageUrl="/images/shopping-cart/pay-details-btn.png" ValidationGroup="pay" runat="server" /> </div> <br class="clear" /> </asp:Panel> Here is the CSS: .row { float:left; height:40px; } .button-row { float:left; width:323px; text-align:right; } Any ideas how I can stop this? Thanks.

  • Java SOAP - Need help on Body and ChildElement manipulation

    - by techventure
    Hi guys I'm trying to write some code in java to learn more about coding with WSDL and SOAP. I've been able to build up a BodyElement for a given namespace. But when i come to adding the childElements I'm runnig intp problems. For example given :'<'to:checkAccount xmlns:to="http://foo" '<'to:id test' <'/to:id '<'to:password test '<'/to:password '<'to:checkAccount " I'm able to set the bodyElement(to:checkAccount), but when i try to add the childElements (to:id, to:password) , the childElement needs to have the "to" prefix otherwise it won't work. ie. sf = SOAPFactory.newInstance(); Name childName = sf.createName("id"); SOAPElement symbol = bodyElement.addChildElement(childName); this doesn't work since it doesn't have the "to" prefix to id and password. I cannot do Name childName = sf.createName("id","to",null); as it gives me an error saying wrong namespace... can someone tell me how i can add to:id and to:password to to:checkAccount ?

  • jQuery script works in Firefox but not in IE. Why am I not surprised?

    - by Ben Tew
    I'm working with the context of a CMS system and trying to turn seperate div's into tabs. You can see it at http://www.wtvynews4.com/test I've kludged together some code from a tutorial site. <script charset="utf-8" type="text/javascript"> jQuery(function() { //When page loads... $("div[ondblclick$='87119417']").attr("id", "87119417"); $("div[ondblclick$='87119482']").attr("id", "87119482"); $("div[ondblclick$='87119672']").attr("id", "87119672"); $("div[ondblclick$='87119727']").attr("id", "87119727"); $("div[ondblclick$='87119812']").attr("id", "87119812"); $("div[ondblclick$='87119417']").addClass("tab_content"); $("div[ondblclick$='87119482']").addClass("tab_content"); $("div[ondblclick$='87119672']").addClass("tab_content"); $("div[ondblclick$='87119727']").addClass("tab_content"); $("div[ondblclick$='87119812']").addClass("tab_content"); $(".tab_content").hide(); //Hide all content $("ul.morenewstabs li:first").addClass("active").show(); //Activate first tab $(".tab_content:first").show(); //Show first tab content //On Click Event $("ul.morenewstabs li").click(function() { $("ul.morenewstabs li").removeClass("active"); //Remove any "active" class $(this).addClass("active"); //Add "active" class to selected tab $(".tab_content").hide(); //Hide all tab content var activeTab = $(this).find("a").attr("href"); //Find the href attribute value to identify the active tab + content $(activeTab).show(); //Fade in the active ID content return false; }); }); </script> Everything works fine in Firefox but not IE. can you provide any assistance? When the page loads the attribute ID's and classes aren't assigned. I tried changing jQuery(function() { to $(document).ready(function() still no luck.

  • Why can't we just use a hash of passphrase as the encryption key (and IV) with symmetric encryption algorithms?

    - by TX_
    Inspired by my previous question, now I have a very interesting idea: Do you really ever need to use Rfc2898DeriveBytes or similar classes to "securely derive" the encryption key and initialization vector from the passphrase string, or will just a simple hash of that string work equally well as a key/IV, when encrypting the data with symmetric algorithm (e.g. AES, DES, etc.)? I see tons of AES encryption code snippets, where Rfc2898DeriveBytes class is used to derive the encryption key and initialization vector (IV) from the password string. It is assumed that one should use a random salt and a shitload of iterations to derive secure enough key/IV for the encryption. While deriving bytes from password string using this method is quite useful in some scenarios, I think that's not applicable when encrypting data with symmetric algorithms! Here is why: using salt makes sense when there is a possibility to build precalculated rainbow tables, and when attacker gets his hands on hash he looks up the original password as a result. But... with symmetric data encryption, I think this is not required, as the hash of password string, or the encryption key, is never stored anywhere. So, if we just get the SHA1 hash of password, and use it as the encryption key/IV, isn't that going to be equally secure? What is the purpose of using Rfc2898DeriveBytes class to generate key/IV from password string (which is a very very performance-intensive operation), when we could just use a SHA1 (or any other) hash of that password? Hash would result in random bit distribution in a key (as opposed to using string bytes directly). And attacker would have to brute-force the whole range of key (e.g. if key length is 256bit he would have to try 2^256 combinations) anyway. So either I'm wrong in a dangerous way, or all those samples of AES encryption (including many upvoted answers here at SO), etc. that use Rfc2898DeriveBytes method to generate encryption key and IV are just wrong.

  • C++ and its type system: How to deal with data with multiple types?

    - by sub
    "Introduction" I'm relatively new to C++. I went through all the basic stuff and managed to build 2-3 simple interpreters for my programming languages. The first thing that gave and still gives me a headache: Implementing the type system of my language in C++ Think of that: Ruby, Python, PHP and Co. have a lot of built-in types which obviously are implemented in C. So what I first tried was to make it possible to give a value in my language three possible types: Int, String and Nil. I came up with this: enum ValueType { Int, String, Nil }; class Value { public: ValueType type; int intVal; string stringVal; }; Yeah, wow, I know. It was extremely slow to pass this class around as the string allocator had to be called all the time. Next time I've tried something similar to this: enum ValueType { Int, String, Nil }; extern string stringTable[255]; class Value { public: ValueType type; int index; }; I would store all strings in stringTable and write their position to index. If the type of Value was Int, I just stored the integer in index, it wouldn't make sense at all using an int index to access another int, or? Anyways, the above gave me a headache too. After some time, accessing the string from the table here, referencing it there and copying it over there grew over my head - I lost control. I had to put the interpreter draft down. Now: Okay, so C and C++ are statically typed. How do the main implementations of the languages mentioned above handle the different types in their programs (fixnums, bignums, nums, strings, arrays, resources,...)? What should I do to get maximum speed with many different available types? How do the solutions compare to my simplified versions above?
