• Accessing Oracle DB through SQL Server using OPENROWSET

  I'm trying to access a large Oracle database through SQL Server using OPENROWSET in client-side Javascript, and not having much luck. Here are the particulars: A SQL Server view that accesses the Oracle database using OPENROWSET works perfectly, so I know I have valid connection string parameters. However, the new requirement is for extremely dynamic Oracle queries that depend on client-side selections, and I haven't been able to get dynamic (or even parameterized) Oracle queries to work from SQL Server views or stored procedures. Client-side access to the SQL Server database works perfectly with dynamic and parameterized queries. I cannot count on clients having any Oracle client software. Therefore, access to the Oracle database has to be through the SQL Server database, using views, stored procedures, or dynamic queries using OPENROWSET. Because the SQL Server database is on a shared server, I'm not allowed to use globally-linked databases. My idea was to define a function that would take my own version of a parameterized Oracle query, make the parameter substitutions, wrap the query in an OPENROWSET, and execute it in SQL Server, returning the resulting recordset. You must access this provider through a linked server. which makes no sense to me. The Microsoft explanation for this error relates to a registry setting (DisallowAdhocAccess). This is set correctly on my PC, but surely this relates to the DB server and not the client PC, and I would expect that the setting there is correct since the view mentioned above works. One alternative that I've tried is to eliminate the enclosing EXEC in the Open statement: rs.Open(e,db); but this generates the same error. I also tried putting the OPENROWSET in a stored procedure. This works perfectly when executed from within SQL Server Management Studio, but fails with the same error message when the stored procedure is called from Javascript. Is what I'm trying to do possible? If so, can you recommend how to fix my code? Or is a completely different approach necessary? Any hints or related information will be welcome. Thanks in advance.

• Java: ArrayList bottleneck

  Hello, while profiling a java application that calculates hierarchical clustering of thousands of elements I realized that ArrayList.get occupies like half of the CPU needed in the clusterization part of the execution. The algorithm searches the two more similar elements (so it is O(n*(n+1)/2) ), here's the pseudo code: int currentMax = 0.0f for (int i = 0 to n) for (int j = i to n) get content i-th and j-th if their similarity > currentMax update currentMax merge the two clusters So effectively there are a lot of ArrayList.get involved. Is there a faster way? I though that since ArrayList should be a linear array of references it should be the quickest way and maybe I can't do anything since there are simple too many gets.. but maybe I'm wrong. I don't think using a HashMap could work since I need to get them all on every iteration and map.values() should be backed by an ArrayList anyway.. Otherwise should I try other collection libraries that are more optimized? Like google's one, or apache one.. Thanks

• Wrapping/warping a CALayer/UIView (or OpenGL) in 3D (iPhone)

  I've got a UIView (and thus a CALayer) which I'm trying to warp or bend slightly in 3D space. That is, imagine my UIView is a flat label which I want to partially wrap around a beer bottle (not 360 degrees around, just on one "side"). I figured this would be possible by applying a transform to the view's layer, but as far as I can tell, this transform is limited to rotation, scale and translation of the layer uniformly. I could be wrong here, as my linear algebra is foggy at this point, to say the least. How can I achieve this?

• Recognize objects in image

  Hello I am in the process of doing a school project, where we have a robot driving on the ground in between Flamingo plates. We need to create an algorithm that can identify the locations of these plates, so we can create paths around them (We are using A Star for that). So far have we worked with AForged Library and we have created the following class, the only problem with this is that when it create the rectangles dose it not take in account that the plates are not always parallel with the camera border, and it that case will it just create a rectangle that cover the whole plate. So we need to some way find the rotation on the object, or another way to identify this. • Creating a GraphicsPath from a semi-transparent bitmap

  I want to create a GraphicsPath and a list of Points to form the outline of the non-transparent area of a bitmap. If needed, I can guarantee that each image has only one solid collection of nontransparent pixels. So for example, I should be able to record the points either clockwise or counter-clockwise along the edge of the pixels and perform a full closed loop. The speed of this algorithm is not important. However, the efficiency of the resulting points is semi-important if I can skip some points to reduce in a smaller and less complex GraphicsPath. I will list my current code below which works perfectly with most images. However, some images which are more complex end up with paths which seem to connect in the wrong order. • How optimize code with introspection + heavy alloc on iPhone

  I have a problem. I try to display a UITable that could have 2000-20000 records (typicall numbers.) I have a SQLite database similar to the Apple contacts application. I do all the tricks I know to get a smoth scroll, but I have a problem. I load the data in 50 recods blocks. Then, when the user scroll, request next 50 until finish the list. However, load that 50 records cause a notable "pause" in loading and scrolling. Everything else works fine. I cache the data, have opaque cells, draw it by code, etc... I swap the code loading the same data in dicts and have a performance boost but wonder if I could keep my object oriented aproach and improve the actual code.   Well BindingList and ObservableCollection work great to keep data updated and to notify when one of it's objects has changed. However, when notifying a property is about to change, I think these options are not very good. • Android: Changing LinearLayout in a widget.

  Hello all, I have this really annoying problem: In my widget, i would like to change the background by code. I noticed on the Google doc than I can easily change the background of an Imageview: remoteViews.setImageViewResource(R.id.my_iv, R.drawable.my_bg); Ok, too easy, i want to change now the Linear layout.. What I read about the remoteview id that I can change a Bitmap, Int, Bool, String, etc... but not a drawable. So i guess i cannot use: remoteViews.setBitmap(R.id.my_ll,"setBackgroundDrawable",BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), R.drawablemy_bg)); I am totally disapointed and tried a last idea: views.setInt(R.id.my_ll,"setBackgroundResource",R.drawable.my_bg); But The logcat told me: android.widget.RemoteViews$ActionException:view: android.widget.LinearLayout can't use method with RemoteViews: setBackgroundResource(int) I am totally lost and I really don't know what to do... I would really appreciate any help. Thank a lot!

• Multithreading/Parallel Processing in PHP

  I have a PHP script that will generate a report using PHPExcel from data queried from a MySQL DB. Currently, it is linear in processing in that it gets the data back from MySQL, reads in the Excel template, writes the data to the template, then outputs it. I have optimized the code to the point that the data is only iterated over once, and there is very little processing done on the PHP side. The query returns hundreds of lines in less than .001 seconds, so it is running fast enough. After some timing I have found my bottlenecks to be (surprise, surprise) reading the template and writing the output. I would like to do this: Spawn a thread/process to read the template Spawn a thread/process to fetch the data Return back to parent thread - Parent thread will wait until both are complete Proceed on as normal My main questions are is this possible, is it worth it? If yes to both, how would you tackle it? Also, it is PHP 5 on CentOS

But I noticed that menubar that i was using stopped working, it was supposed to drop horizontaly but it is not being displayed now. I have used jquery for it. Please see the source of the web page. What can be the problem ? Mootools conflicting with javascript or some other problem. I implemented a solution of this using sockets, but there were some issues so I am investigating a new/better way to send a file. • Adding audio channel using ffmpeg

  Hi all, I am working on ffmpeg and trying to add a audio stream on the fly. I am using AudioQueues and I get raw audio buffer. I am encoding audio with linear PCM and hence the audio I get will be of raw format, which I know ffmpeg does accept it. But I cannot figure out how. I have looked into AVStream, where in we have to create a new stream for this audio channel but how do I encode it to a video which is already initialized in another AVStream structure. Overall, I would like to have an idea of the architecture of ffmpeg. I found it difficult to work since it is least documented. Any pointers or details are appreciated.   Okey, this is only half programming, but let's see how you are on terms with manual calculations. I believe many of you did this on your university's while giving "linear systems" ... the problem is it's been so long I can't remember how to do it any more. I know quite a few algorithms for calculating determinants, and they all work fine ... for large systems, where one would never try to do it manually. Unfortunatelly, I'm soon going on an exam, where I do have to calculate it manually, up to the system of 5. So, I have a K(omega) matrix that looks like this: [2-(omega^2)*c -4 2 0 0] [-2 5-(omega^2)*c -4 1 0] [1 -4 6-(omega^2)*c -4 1] [0 1 -4 5-(omega^2)*c -2] [0 0 2 -4 2-(omega^2)*c] and I need all the omegas which satisfy the det[K(omega)]=0 criteria. What would be a good way to calculate it so it can be repeated in a manual process ?

• A little bit of Ajax goes a long way

  ..except when you're having problems. My problem is this: I have a hierarchical list of categories stored in a database which I wish to output in a dropdown list. The hierarchy comes into place when the subcategories are to be displayed, which are dependent on a parent id (which equals out to the first seven or so main categories listed). My thoughts are relatively simple: when the user clicks the dynamically allocated list of main categories, they are clicking on an option tag. For each option tag, an id (i.e., the parent) is listed in the value attribute, as well as an argument which is sent to a Javascript function which then uses AJAX to get the data via PHP and sends it to my 'javascript.php' file. The file then does magic, and populates the subcategory list, which is dependent on the main category selected. I believe I have the idea down, it's just that I'm implementing the solution improperly, for some reason. Is there something specific that I'm missing here? Just looking up basic AJAX syntax (via jQuery) hasn't helped out, unfortunately.

• Linking LLVM JIT Code to Static LLVM Libraries?

  I'm in the process of implementing a cross-platform (Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux) application which will do lots of CPU intensive analysis of financial data. The bulk of the analysis engine will be written in C++ for speed reasons, with a user-accessible scripting engine interfacing with the C++ testing engine. I want to write several scripting front-ends over time to emulate other popular software with existing large user bases. The first front will be a VisualBasic-like scripting language. I'm thinking that LLVM would be perfect for my needs. Performance is very important because of the sheer amount of data; it can take hours or days to run a single run of tests to get an answer. I believe that using LLVM will also allow me to use a single back-end solution while I implement different front-ends for different flavors of the scripting language over time. The testing engine itself will be separated from the interface and testing will even take place in a separate process with progress and results being reported to the testing management interface. Tests will consist of scripting code integrated with the testing engine code. In a previous implementation of a similar commercial testing system I wrote, I built a fast interpreter which easily interfaced with the testing library because it was written in C++ and linked directly to the testing engine library. Callbacks from scripting code to testing library objects involved translating between the formats with significant overhead. I'm imagining that with LLVM, I could implement the callbacks into C++ directly so that I could make the scripting code work almost as if it had been written in C++. Likewise, if all the code was compiled to LLVM byte-code format, it seems like the LLVM optimizers could optimize across the boundaries between the scripting language and the testing engine code that was written in C++. I don't want to have to compile the testing engine every time. Ideally, I'd like to JIT compile only the scripting code. For small tests, I'd skip some optimization passes, while for large tests, I'd perform full optimizations during the link. So is this possible? Can I precompile the testing engine to a .o object file or .a library file and then link in the scripting code using the JIT? Finally, ideally, I'd like to have the scripting code implement specific methods as subclasses for a specific C++ class. So the C++ testing engine would only see C++ objects while the JIT setup code compiled scripting code that implemented some of the methods for the objects. It seems that if I used the right name mangling algorithm it would be relatively easy to set up the LLVM generation for the scripting language to look like a C++ method call which could then be linked into the testing engine. Thus the linking stage would go in two directions, calls from the scripting language into the testing engine objects to retrieve pricing information and test state information and calls from the testing engine of methods of some particular C++ objects where the code was supplied not from C++ but from the scripting language. In summary: 1) Can I link in precompiled (either .bc, .o, or .a) files as part of the JIT compilation, code-generation process? 2) Can I link in code using that the process in 1) above in such a way that I am able to create code that acts as if it was all written in C++?

  I'm trying to design a system in Node.js (an attempt at solving one of my earlier problems, using Node's concurrency) but I'm running into trouble figuring out how to draw a plan of how the thing should operate. I'm getting very tripped up thinking in terms of callbacks instead of returned values. The flow isn't linear, and it's really boggling my ability to draft it. How does one draw out an operational flow for an event-driven system? I need something I can look at and say "Ok, yes, that's how it will work. I'll start it over here, and it will give me back these results over here." Pictures would be very helpful for this one. Thanks. Edit: I'm looking for something more granular than UML, specifically, something that will help me transition from a blocking and object-oriented programming structure, where I'm comfortable, to a non-blocking and event driven structure, where I'm unfamiliar.

  Hi StackOverflow! My application requires several interface implementations which require a Jetty server to do their job. This is, however, not necessarily the case in every implementations of those interfaces so the Jetty server is only a dependency. Since it would be a huge amount of pain to wrap the entire jetty server with all its logging, connector and Handler configurations, I want to inject the server to those implementations with Spring. I decided that injecting the Server class is not a good idea because an implementation could stop the server even if its required at another location. Currently I inject empty HandlerList classes to those implementations and they register their handlers to avoid those problems. The Problem: Those handlers might interfere with other handlers for example: implementation one might register a handler for /foo and implementation two too... problem. Has anyone used Jetty in such an environment? And how could this problem be solved? • How to optimize this JSON/JQuery/Javascript function in IE7/IE8?
