  • Logger.setLevel() doesn't enable logging correctly

    - by ripper234
    Situation: I have this log4j logger: private static final Logger logger = Logger.getLogger(ThisClassName.class); And am trying to set it programatically through: Logger.getLogger(ThisClassName.class).setLevel(Level.DEBUG); Still, DEBUG level prints are swalloed (while INFO prints are printed successfully). Even this bit has no effect: Logger.getRootLogger().setLevel(Level.DEBUG); Calling logger.debug("foo") reaches Category.forcedLog() and ConsoleAppender.doAppend(), and then fails (quits) at: if(!isAsSevereAsThreshold(event.getLevel())) Any idea why this is happening?

  • Force download through markup or JS

    - by mschoening
    Lets assume I have a file on a CDN (Cloud Files from Rackspace) and a static html page with a link to that file. Is there any way I can force download this file (to prevent it from opening in the browser -- for mp3s for example)? We could make our server read the file and set the corresponding header to: header("Content-Type: application/force-download") but we have about 5 million downloads per month so we would rather let the CDN take care of that. Any ideas?

  • Speeding up Math calculations in Java

    - by Simon
    I have a neural network written in Java which uses a sigmoid transfer function defined as follows: private static double sigmoid(double x) { return 1 / (1 + Math.exp(-x)); } and this is called many times during training and computation using the network. Is there any way of speeding this up? It's not that it's slow, it's just that it is used a lot, so a small optimisation here would be a big overall gain.

  • A question about making a C# class persistant during a file load

    - by Adam
    Apologies for the indescriptive title, however it's the best I could think of for the moment. Basically, I've written a singleton class that loads files into a database. These files are typically large, and take hours to process. What I am looking for is to make a method where I can have this class running, and be able to call methods from within it, even if it's calling class is shut down. The singleton class is simple. It starts a thread that loads the file into the database, while having methods to report on the current status. In a nutshell it's al little like this: public sealed class BulkFileLoader { static BulkFileLoader instance = null; int currentCount = 0; BulkFileLoader() public static BulkFileLoader Instance { // Instanciate the instance class if necessary, and return it } public void Go() { // kick of 'ProcessFile' thread } public void GetCurrentCount() { return currentCount; } private void ProcessFile() { while (more rows in the import file) { // insert the row into the database currentCount++; } } } The idea is that you can get an instance of BulkFileLoader to execute, which will process a file to load, while at any time you can get realtime updates on the number of rows its done so far using the GetCurrentCount() method. This works fine, except the calling class needs to stay open the whole time for the processing to continue. As soon as I stop the calling class, the BulkFileLoader instance is removed, and it stops processing the file. What I am after is a solution where it will continue to run independently, regardless of what happens to the calling class. I then tried another approach. I created a simple console application that kicks off the BulkFileLoader, and then wrapped it around as a process. This fixes one problem, since now when I kick off the process, the file will continue to load even if I close the class that called the process. However, now the problem I have is that cannot get updates on the current count, since if I try and get the instance of BulkFileLoader (which, as mentioned before is a singleton), it creates a new instance, rather than returning the instance that is currently in the executing process. It would appear that singletons don't extend into the scope of other processes running on the machine. In the end, I want to be able to kick off the BulkFileLoader, and at any time be able to find out how many rows it's processed. However, that is even if I close the application I used to start it. Can anyone see a solution to my problem?

  • Painted JPanel won't show up in JFrame

    - by javawarrior
    When I run my code, I expect to see a JPanel in my JFrame, but nothing shows up. I had a button in the frame, and it shows up. But the JPanel doesn't show up, I even colored it in red. Here is the code for my JPanel: import java.awt.*; import javax.swing.JPanel; public class graphic extends JPanel { private static final long serialVersionUID = -3458717449092499931L; public Game game; public graphic(Game game){ this.game = game; this.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(400,400)); this.setBackground(Color.RED); } public void paintComponent(Graphics g){ for (Line l:game.mirrors){ g.setColor(Color.BLACK); g.drawLine(l.start.x, l.start.y, l.end.x, l.end.y); } } } And my JFrame code: import java.awt.Container; import java.awt.event.*; import java.util.Timer; import java.util.TimerTask; import javax.swing.*; public class Viewer implements ActionListener { public JFrame frame; public JButton drawShoot; public boolean draw; public Game game; public graphic graphic; public TimerTask timert; public Timer timer; public Viewer(){ draw = true; game = new Game(); } public static void main(String args[]){ Viewer v = new Viewer(); v.setup(); } public void setup(){ frame = new JFrame("Laser Stimulator"); drawShoot = new JButton("Edit Mode"); graphic = new graphic(game); graphic.repaint(); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frame.setBounds(300, 300, 600, 600); Container contentPane = frame.getContentPane(); SpringLayout layout = new SpringLayout(); contentPane.setLayout(layout); drawShoot.addActionListener(this); timert = new TimerTask() { @Override public void run() { } }; timer =new Timer(); timer.scheduleAtFixedRate(timert, 0, 1000/30); contentPane.add(graphic); layout.putConstraint(SpringLayout.NORTH, graphic, 0, SpringLayout.NORTH, contentPane); layout.putConstraint(SpringLayout.WEST, graphic, 0, SpringLayout.WEST, contentPane); frame.setVisible(true); } @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { if (e.getSource()==drawShoot){ draw = !draw; drawShoot.setText((draw)?"Edit Mode":"Shoot Mode"); } } }

  • Looking for a simple CMS with WYSIWYG and image gallery

    - by abeger
    I'm building a new site that consists entirely of: 8-10 pages of static content that rarely changes (like once every few months or once every year) An image gallery Since I don't plan to be the primary maintainer of the site, I'd like to use a CMS with some security and a WYSIWYG editor so non-web-savvy people can tweak the site when necessary. I started out using Drupal, but started wondering if it was overkill. So, two questions: 1) is it overkill? 2) What CMS would you recommend for a project this simple?

  • c++ Function pointer inlining

    - by wb
    I know I can pass a function pointer as a template parameter and get a call to it inlined but I wondered if any compilers these days can inline an 'obvious' inline-able function like: inline static void Print() { std::cout << "Hello\n"; } .... void (*func)() = Print; func(); Under Visual Studio 2008 its clever enough to get it down to a direct call instruction so it seems a shame it can't take it a step further?

  • Java: Converting UTF 8 to String

    - by kujawk
    When I run the following program: public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception { byte str[] = {(byte)0xEC, (byte)0x96, (byte)0xB4}; String s = new String(str, "UTF-8"); } on Linux and inspect the value of s in jdb, I correctly get: s = "ì–´" on Windows, I incorrectly get: s = "?" My byte sequence is a valid UTF-8 character in Korean, why would it be producing two very different results?

  • Call c++ function pointer from c#

    - by Sam
    Is it possible to call a c(++) static function pointer like this typedef int (*MyCppFunc)(void* SomeObject); from c#? void CallFromCSharp(MyCppFunc funcptr, IntPtr param) { funcptr(param); } I need to be able to callback from c# into some old c++ classes. C++ is managed, but the classes are not ref classes (yet). So far I got no idea how to call a c++ function pointer from c#, is it possible?

  • Adding a wrapper to an overloaded function

    - by Cev
    Say you had a timestamp function and then wanted to create a new function to combine your timestamp and Console.WriteLine(), e.g. public static void Write(string msg) { WriteTimeStamp(); Console.WriteLine( msg ); } But the WriteLine() method has 18 or so overloads, which will not be reflected in the signature of the wrapper function. How would you have the wrapper take non-strings and pass them on to WriteLine()?
