  • Will the Global Demand for Water Outstrip the Supply by 2030?

    - by Evelyn Neumayr
A recent study conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit and sponsored by Oracle Utilities, titled “Water for All?”,considers the preparedness of utilities to supply water to the current global population of over 7 billion people, with a further 1 billion expected by 2030. It compares strategies used by utilities in 10 major countries to address this challenge. This study’s findings show that wide-ranging water management efforts and large-scale investments must be made if utilities are to meet near-certain water stress—demand outstripping supply—by 2030. The report is based on an online survey of 244 executives of water utilities in these countries, supplemented by in-depth interviews with 20 water utility executives and independent experts. The research concludes that utilities worldwide expect to meet future demand, despite increased supply pressure on supplies, due to improvements in water productivity that the wide range of measures utilities and governments will take to ensure that water is used more efficiently. • Failed GRUB after 10.04 to 12.04 upgrade in system with LVM

    - by Vagelis L
I am using Ubuntu Server as a SMB server at work and two days ago I have tried to upgrade it to 12.04. After reboot, I got this grub_xput missing grub rescue> and all attempts to start from this prompt failed (missing components, although grub directory is normally set as prefix). My system sits and boots on an LVM (soft raid-5). I have read almost all posts in many forums, tried grub rescue, boot-repair, ubuntu-secure-remix with boot-repair but without positive result. This is the log of my last (and best so far) attempt to fix this system. Any suggestions? Please help.

  • Are things slow for you today - Check your DNS

    - by simonsabin
Domain name resolution is a very common cause of delays when doing anything over the network whether its accessing a web page or connecting to SQL Server. Everything uses DNS. TCP/IP works with IP addresses and not friendly names. When using names you have to have a way of resolving names to IP addresses and thats what DNS does. If your DNS is wrong then you'll get delays and also potentially odd results. For instance if you have multiple DNS servers configured you may find that occasionally...(read more)

  • How do I create a WiFi hotspot sharing wireless internet connection (single adapter)?

    - by Ruppesh Nalwaya
I know how to create a hotspot when connected to a wired network, but when I am using internet from a WiFi connection, this disconnects the wireless connection the moment I activate the hotspot. In Windows I can use Connectify Hotspot, which enables me to share the internet connection from the same wireless adapter as I am creating an access point on. As you can read on the technology overview page: Access Point mode allows you to create a hotspot using the same Wi-Fi card that you are using to access the Internet. How do I do this on Ubuntu?

  • An honor to be among the SQL Server MVPs

    - by dbaduck
I just found out last night that I was officially awarded SQL MVP.  I am honored to be among those that I respect and admire.  I don’t contribute for the recognition and as a former MVP Lead I know the caliber of those that contribute to the SQL Server community, and even those that are not MVP, I am grateful for those of you who have helped me get where I am in SQL Server land. I just wanted to say thanks to the SQL Community for the support and also to Microsoft for this award. Here’s...(read more)

  • Basic memcached question

    - by Aadith
I have been reading up on distributed hashing. I learnt that consistent hashing is used for distributing the keys among cache machines. I also learnt that, a key is duplicated on mutiple caches to handle failure of cache hosts. But what I have come across on memcached doesn't seem to be in alignment with all this. I read that all cache nodes are independent of each other and that if a cache goes down, requests go to DB. Theres no mention of cache miss on a host resulting in the host directing the request to another host which could either be holding the key or is nearer to the key. Can you please tell me how these two fit together? Is memcached a very preliminary form of distributed hashing which doesnt have much sophistication?

  • Alternatives to sql like databases

    - by user613326
Well i was wondering these days computers usually have 2GB or 4GB memory I like to use some secure client server model, and well an sql database is likely candidate. On the other hand i only have about 8000 records, who will not frequently be read or written in total they would consume less then 16 Megabyte. And it made me wonder what would be good secure options in a windows environment to store the data work with it multi-client single server model, without using SQL or mysql Would for well such a small amount of data maybe other ideas better ? Because i like to keep maintenance as simple as possible (no administrators would need to know sql maintenance, as they dont know databases in my target environment) Maybe storing in xml files or.. something else. Just wonder how others would go if ease of administration is the main goal. Oh and it should be secure to, the client server data must be a bit secure (maybe NTLM files shares https or...etc)

  • Windows 8 Location Services

    - by ryanabr
I spent the afternoon with the Geolocator object in the WinRT and Widows 8 platform. I have also been working with doing Windows Phone 7 development, and first had to wrap my head around the fact that while similar, it is not the same as the GeoCoordinateWatcher that environment. I found a nice example here http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsapps/Geolocation-2483de66 But the behavior of my app wasn’t the same. Once you ensure that location services is enabled by following these instructions: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh768219.aspx Location Services was still disabled. From everything I read, it sounded like the first time you try to use the Geolocator object, the user would be prompted to allow to “Access to your location”. After nosing around I found the issue. You need to add the location service as a Capability in the Package.appxmanifest file: After checking the box, I was prompted to allow access to location services as expected the first time I needed to use it.

  • Write depth buffer to texture

    - by innochenti
    I need to read depth buffer from GPU and write it to texture. How this can be done? Here is how texture for depth buffer is created: depthBufferDesc.Width = screenWidth; depthBufferDesc.Height = screenHeight; depthBufferDesc.MipLevels = 1; depthBufferDesc.ArraySize = 1; depthBufferDesc.Format = DXGI_FORMAT_D24_UNORM_S8_UINT; depthBufferDesc.SampleDesc.Count = 1; depthBufferDesc.SampleDesc.Quality = 0; depthBufferDesc.Usage = D3D10_USAGE_DEFAULT; depthBufferDesc.BindFlags = D3D10_BIND_DEPTH_STENCIL; depthBufferDesc.CPUAccessFlags = 0; depthBufferDesc.MiscFlags = 0; m_device->CreateTexture2D(&depthBufferDesc, NULL, m_depthStencilBuffer); Also, I've got another question: is it possible to bind depth buffer texture as sampler to the pixel shader?

  • iOS NSError with global handler

    - by Sebastian Dressler
I am in the beginning of programming an iOS app. Having read the Apple guides on how to deal with errors, I got the following most important points: Exceptions are for programmers Use NSError for the user Now, NSError is usually passed as out-argument which can then be used inside and has to be checked by the caller. However, I'm asking myself whether it is a good idea to use a global error handler, say a singleton which wraps around NSError and could be used to trigger errors and error handling from within the called function. Is there anything against that method or would it be a bad practice?

  • Firefox installed on my ubuntu 12.04 machine but I am unable to connect to the internet(Nobody know???)

    - by Chella
every other browser installed is working fine..! except this Firefox. what are the things that I need to check, to make firefox work on my computer. I am a newbie for ubuntu. I tried googling not got enough and clear information. Please help me. Thanks in advance..! This is the error that I am getting just before launching of the application..! Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features.

  • Is it illegal to forward copyrighted content? [closed]

    - by Mike
Ok, this may be a strange question, but let's start: If I illegally download a movie (for example...) from a HTTP Web Server, there are many routers between me and the Web Server which are forwarding the data to my PC. As I understand, the owners of the routers are not legally responsible for the data they forward (please correct if I'm wrong). What if I would install a client of a peer-to-peer network on my PC and this client (peer) would forward copyrighted content received from peers to other peers? Hope someone understand what I mean ;-) Any answer or comment would be highly appreciated. Mike Update 1: I'm asking this question because I want to develop a p2p-application and try to figure out how to prevent illegal content sharing/distribution (if forwarding content is really illegal...) Update 2: What if the data forwarded by my peer is encrypted, so I'm technically not able to read and check it?

  • WCF + AppFabric training (4+1 days)

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint 2010 Training: more information If there is one part of .NET that I think is the most important for you to master, it has to be WCF. It is something I have used, learnt, and talked about extensively. If there is one part of future looking technologies that I think will be extremely important going forward, it is AppFabric, both for Windows Server and Windows Azure. Both these topics are so incredibly valuable that I exude with excitement every time I touch them or talk about them. I have finally put together an exhaustive training on these two extremely relevant and important technologies, that you as a .NET developer must know. Here are the details, Read full article ....

  • What is this called?

    - by robertlewis2001
    I'm hoping there's a book or something out there for me to get... If I have a class that has Collection as an instance variable, what is that method of coding called? A design pattern? If so, where can I find more information on it? As I've been working with this mentor, he's really helped me understand my programming weakness and that weakness is thinking in terms of collections or relationships between objects. It just seems so difficult for me right now and I need to read to become smarter. My mentor is a great guy, but he gets frustrated when I start asking lots of questions, so I'm starting to feel like I need to learn more on my own. public class Evaluation { private List<Criterion> criterion = null; public Evaluation() { criterion = new List<Criterion>(); } }

  • https (SSL) instead of http

    - by user1332729
I am building myself a new website, out of privacy and security concerns I am contemplating trying to make it https only. It will be mobile-friendly using media queries but I am concerned--especially for mobile users--about the increased bandwidth. How much will doing so increase my bandwidth or slow load times? For pages where I'm not transferring sensitive information, should I leave external links (to a jQuery library, or a web font for instance) in http? Simply put, I have read articles saying the entire web would be more secure if everything was SSL but my actual knowledge of implementation is limited to payment gateways and log-in pages and such. I apologize for the open-ended nature of the question but anything, even just simple answers to the specific questions is welcomed.

  • Free serif font with clearly distinguishable 0 (zero) character

    - by l0b0
I'm using gLabels to create some small pieces of paper to give away to people - Just two lines of about 15-20 characters each. One of the important parts of the design is that there are no "o" ("oh") characters, but there are "0" ("zero") characters in an all-lowercase URL. Therefore I need a non-monospaced (and very legible in print) font where "0" cannot be confused with "o" even without reference. The closest thing I've found so far is Andale Mono and Inconsolata , but they are both monospace, and as such not very easy to read in print. Alternatively, to find a font myself, is there some way to preview all fonts in the Ubuntu repositories without installing them?

  • Issues with external mounting after pysdm removed

    - by K. R. Huard
So, I'm very new to ubuntu. I was having troubles getting my external hard drive to be read/write permission. It's owner is my macbook, and writing on the drive was repeatedly denied. In trying to sort this out, I tried the Nautilus commands (no success), installed the PYSDM application, changed some things (as suggested by this user in this forum http://askubuntu.com/a/113992 )but then found that I was getting an error message whenever I tried to mount an external storage device. The error is: Unable to mount DERPSTICK error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: [mntent]: line 14 in etc/fstab is bad mount: only root can mount /dev/sdc1/ on /media/sdc1 Others with similar problems put their fstab up here, but I'm not sure how to bring it up, or if I should even try. Thanks for your time!
