  • Is sudo dd taking too long to wipe hard drive?

    - by Adam133718
I have a 200gb HDD which I removed from a macbook due to several corrupt files in startup. One thing led to another and I decided that I needed to format the drive. I used the command sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb which is supposed to wipe everything off of the hard drive. It is my understanding that the command writes 0's over every bit on the drive, which I would imagine must take a while. The process has been going for about 18 hours now. I can use other functions of operating system like the web browser and I can even use another terminal window, so I know the system is not frozen. Should I restart the process or let it continue on? Any advice will help. Thanks. By the way, I already noticed a post similar to this that was previously answered though the user was not using the same command as I was.

  • Constant noise in speakers and headphones

    - by user103978
On my laptop, Samsung 300V5A-S19 I have the constant noise from the speakers. If I wear headphones, the sound becomes more pronounced (at half volume it mutes the music). The noise level is independent of the volume control. The noise disappears only when volume is completely muted. For the record, the sound is reminiscent of the noise of the waves or something like that. System information: Ubuntu 12.10, kernel 3.5.0-18 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04) All packages in the system updated. PS: Following the advice from this message (click) yielded no result.

  • "Google files": Building a web interface to find/ack/grep

    - by user27915816
I am working on a project where we would like to have build a web interface that gives the user the ability to "Google" files in a directory in a remote machine. For example, the user would type a string in a box, and then the system would find all files that contain that string and present them in the browser. The system would then give the user the ability click on any of the files to open them/display them in the browser. We want to avoid reinventing the wheel if possible, but don't really know where to start (none of us in the team have much experience building websites). What software packages, libraries or tools exist that can help us get this done?

  • Best book/source to learn the unix commands

    - by Kraken
So I was intern at this company wherein they'd use just putty. Now I've never worked with unix commands, apart from the basic , compile code , run C code. But now I would love to know all the things about the unix. Starting off with the commands, from the most basic of all to the decent level. Also, moving forward, how the different folders/files are arranged in a unix (ubuntu is installed on my system) system. I have picked up a couple of books, but they dont seem to help. Can someone suggest a comprehensive book that'll fulfill my needs. Because, working with a GUI on ubuntu does not really give me the real feel of things. Hence I'd want to move on to the terminal instead. Thanks.

  • When attaching AI to a vehicle should I define all steps or try Line of Sight?

    - by ThorDivDev
    This problem is related to an intersection simulation I am building for university. I will try to make it as general as possible. I am trying to assign AI to a vehicle using the JMonkeyEngine platform. AIGama_JmonkeyEngine explains that if you wish to create a car that follows a path you can define the path in steps. If there was no physics attached whatsoever then all you need to do is define the x,y,z values of where you want the object to appear in all subsequent steps. I am attaching the vehicleControl that implements jBullet. In this case the author mentions that I would need to define the steering and accelerating behaviors at each step. I was trying to use ghost controls that represented waypoints and when on colliding the car would decide what to do next like stopping at a red light. This didn't work so well. Car doesn't face right. public void update(float tpf) { Vector3f currentPos = aiVehicle.getPhysicsLocation(); Vector3f baseforwardVector = currentPos.clone(); Vector3f forwardVector; Vector3f subsVector; if (currentState == ObjectState.Running) { aiVehicle.accelerate(-800); } else if (currentState == ObjectState.Seeking) { baseforwardVector = baseforwardVector.normalize(); forwardVector = aiVehicle.getForwardVector(baseforwardVector); subsVector = pointToSeek.subtract(currentPos.clone()); System.out.printf("baseforwardVector: %f, %f, %f\n", baseforwardVector.x, baseforwardVector.y, baseforwardVector.z); System.out.printf("subsVector: %f, %f, %f\n", subsVector.x, subsVector.y, subsVector.z); System.out.printf("ForwardVector: %f, %f, %f\n", forwardVector.x, forwardVector.y, forwardVector.z); if (pointToSeek != null && pointToSeek.x + 3 >= currentPos.x && pointToSeek.x - 3 <= currentPos.x) { aiVehicle.steer(0.0f); aiVehicle.accelerate(-40); } else if (pointToSeek != null && pointToSeek.x > currentPos.x) { aiVehicle.steer(-0.5f); aiVehicle.accelerate(-40); } else if (pointToSeek != null && pointToSeek.x < currentPos.x) { aiVehicle.steer(0.5f); aiVehicle.accelerate(-40); } } else if (currentState == ObjectState.Stopped) { aiVehicle.accelerate(0); aiVehicle.brake(40); } }

  • Unable to mount Windows (NTFS) filesystem due to hibernation

    - by yotamoo
Whenever I boot Ubuntu, I get a message that it cannot mount my windows partition, and I can choose to either wait, skip or manually mount. When I try to enter my Windows partition through Nautilus I get a message saying that this partition is hibernated and that I need to enter the file system and properly close it, something I have done with no problem so I don't know why this happens. • Where are the values of java.library.path being set?

    - by lmestre
This one could be a WebLogic Server question, but this post is general for any java environment. We were getting  at the very beginning  java library path something like this: /home/lmestre/jdk1.6/jre/lib/amd64/server:/home/lmestre/jdk1.6/jre/lib/amd64:/home/lmestre/jdk1.6/jre/../lib/amd64So, the question was: Where WebLogic Server is setting java.library.path?I never found the answer, so why don't we try to try to answerWhere the JVM is setting java.library.path?public class LibraryPathPrinter {   public static void main(String[] args) {       String javaLibraryPath= System.getProperty("java.library.path");       System.out.println("java.library.path "+javaLibraryPath );   }}after a simplejavac LibraryPathPrinter.javaand then an easyjava LibraryPathPrintervoila! The program printed something like thisjava.library.path  /home/lmestre/jdk1.6/jre/lib/amd64/server:/home/lmestre/jdk1.6/jre/lib/amd64:/home/lmestre/jdk1.6/jre/../lib/amd64So the JVM was the culprit.Enjoy!

  • How do I restore logging in with an X session graphics instaed of text-only session?

    - by ajThree9
I was able to set up a text UI by editing the file /etc/default/grub in Ubuntu 12.04 as per the instructions in: How do I disable X at boot time so that the system boots in text mode? But, how do I revert to X-session as the default one? I don't want to log into text mode and 'start' the lightdm every time. So I tried replacing back the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash", and did update-grub too, but something unexpected happened, an unbootable system! How do I fix this?

However I get the impression that the CPU got's hotter in average than without this file. What changes from 13.10 to 14.04 may be responsible for this? If this is a bug, for which package I should report the bug?

  • Ubuntu 13.10 vs 12.04 LTS

    - by Shaun
I am migrating my workflow to ubuntu from windows. I have a macbook pro at home and I really enjoy being able to use the workspaces feature on ubuntu to increase my productivity. As myself being someone that isn't very familiar with doing command line things and hasn't worked with linux a whole lot other than doing basic commands like cd, ls, rm, screen, and sudo. I was wondering what you think would be the best choice for a ubuntu version. I am looking for ease of use as well as stability. I spend most of my time working with eclipse, as well as writing documents. On a side note, right now I have a pretty high end workstation, but I am using a crappy notebook 2.5 inch 1TB hard drive for my system. Would it be worth it to switch to a top of the line SSD, or would the difference not really be noticeable? How difficult would it be for a newcommer to setup the system with the os and important folders running on a SSD and then other folders for storage running on a HD.

  • Cloud Computing Business Benefits

    - by workflowman
If you have been living under a rock for the past year, you wouldn't have heard about cloud computing. Cloud computing is a loose term that describes anything that is hosted in data centers and accessed via the internet. It is normally associated with developers who draw clouds in diagrams indicating where services or how systems communicate with each other. Cloud computing also incorporates such well-known trends as Web 2.0 and Software as a Service (SaaS) and more recently Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS). Its aim is to change the way we compute, moving from traditional desktop and on-premises servers to services and resources that are hosted in the cloud.  Benefits of Cloud Computing  There are clearly benefits in building applications using cloud computing, some of which are listed here:  Zero up- front investment:  Delivering a large-scale system costs a fortune in both time and money. Often IT departments are split into hardware/network and software services. The hardware team provisions servers and so forth under the requirements of the software team. Often the hardware team has a different budget that requires approval. Although hardware and software management are two separate disciplines, sometimes what happens is developers are given the task to estimate CPU cycles, disk space, and so forth, which ends up in underutilized servers.  Usage-based costing:  You pay for what you use, no more, no less, because you never actually own the server. This is similar to car leasing, where in the long run you get a new car every three years and maintenance is never a worry.  Potential for shrinking the processing time:  If processes are split over multiple machines, parallel processing is performed, which decreases processing time.  More office space:  Walk into most offices, and guaranteed you will find a medium- sized room dedicated to servers.  Efficient resource utilization:  The resource utilization is handed by a centralized cloud administrator who is in charge of deciding exactly the right amount of resources for a system. This takes the task away from local administrators, who have to regularly monitor these servers.  Just-in-time infrastructure:  If your system is a success and needs to scale to meet demand, this can cause further time delays or a slow- performing service. Cloud computing solves this because you can add more resources at any time.  Lower environmental impact:  If servers are centralized, potentially an environment initiative is more likely to succeed. As an example, if servers are placed in sunny or windy parts of the world, then why not use these resources to power those servers?  Lower costs:  Unfortunately, this is one point that administrators will not like. If you have people administrating your e-mail server and network along with support staff doing other cloud-based tasks, this workforce can be reduced. This saves costs, though it also reduces jobs.

  • Time display and Cursor bug in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

    - by user291774
Just installed Ubuntu 14.04. Noticed the time in seconds speeds up then slows down to normal speed. The cursor for the keyboard has a strange rhythm; it stays normal, then slowly speeds up faster and faster till it looks like it's not blinking anymore, then goes back to normal and starts the process again. It almost seems like my whole operating system speeds up then slows down again. Even the hour circle that spins when it's loading starts slowly then it picks up speed till it spins so fast it looks like it's not even spinning. It interferes with video and the whole system. I have a Dell Vostro 3750 dual video cards and dual boot with Windows 7. Windows is running fine.

Therefore I tried to find the drive for my wireless card, but actually I have no clue how to get it work. Could someone please help me out? So here are the specs: System installed as mentioned: Ubuntu 9.10 Computer: Acer Aspire 3100 Wireless according to laptop specs: 10/100 Fast Ethernet, Wake-on-LAN ready, Acer InviLink™ 802.11b/g Wi-Fi CERTIFIED I would really appreciate some detailed description to setting up my internet Thanks!!

    - by Enrique Lima
I will be not only attending SPS Cincinnati, but also speaking. And I am very happy and excited about it! The topic: The difference between learning and training: Creating a SharePoint based Learning Management System The description: Training and learning have been defined as synonyms by many organizations. The difference is, training has focused on a classic and traditional model. Learning on the other hand, refers to achieving something from the receiving side of the story, not just delivery. In focusing on driving adoption it is important to have a strategy where learning is also part of the plan. This session focuses on how to create a SharePoint Learning Plan, and how to deliver the plan through the implementation of a Learning Management System. Come join us! • After upgrading to 12.04 lts server, the mouse is intermittently working

    - by Jason
After this upgrade, I've had a problem with the mouse intermittently working and programs crashing (like zentyal crashing and the error reporting application crashing) I also had an error on the screen that said: "Could not grab your mouse. A malisious client may be eavesdropping on your session or you may have just clicked a menu or some application just decided to get focus. Try again." What's going on with this system? Did I really get malware that quickly? This system has been boxed up since 2011. I only did the upgrade today... In regards to the mouse I can move it around, but when I click on something, it doesn't work.
