  • ASP.NET MVC unit testing

    Hi, I'm getting started with unit testing and trying to do some TDD. I've read a fair bit about the subject and written a few tests. I just want to know if the following is the right approach. I want to add the usual "contact us" facility on my web site. You know the thing, the user fills out a form with their email address, enters a brief message and hits a button to post the form back. The model binders do their stuff and my action method accepts the posted data as a model. The action method would then parse the model and use smtp to send an email to the web site administrator infoming him/her that somebody filled out the contact form on their site. Now for the question .... In order to test this, would I be right in creating an interface IDeliver that has a method Send(emailAddress, message) to accept the email address and message body. Implement the inteface in a concrete class and let that class deal with smtp stuff and actually send the mail. If I add the inteface as a parameter to my controller constructor I can then use DI and IoC to inject the concrete class into the controller. But when unit testing I can create a fake or mock version of my IDeliver and do assertions on that. The reason I ask is that I've seen other examples of people generating interfaces for SmtpClient and then mocking that. Is there really any need to go that far or am I not understanding this stuff?

  • NetworkStream.Read delay .Net

    I have a class that inherits from TcpClient. In that class I have a method to process responses. In that method I call I get the NetworkStream with MyBase.GetStream and call Read on it. This works fine, excpet the first call to read blocks too long. And by too long I mean that the socket has recieved plenty of data, but won't read it until some arbitrary limit is reached. I can see that it has recieved plenty of data using the packet sniffer WireShark. I have set the recieve buffer to small amounts, and very small amounts (like just a few bytes) to no avail. I have done the same with the buffer byte array I pass to the read method, and it still delays. Or to put it another way. I am download 600k. The download takes 5 seconds (at a little over 100k/second connection to the server which makes sense). The initial Read call takes 2-3 seconds and tells me only 256 bytes are availble (256 is the Recieve buffer and the size of the array I read in to). Then magically, the other few hundred thousand bytes can be read in 256 byte chunks in only a few process ticks each. Using a packet sniffer, I know that during those initial 2-3 seconds, the socket has recieved much more than just 256 bytes. My connection wasn't .25k/second for 3 seconds and then 400k for 2 seconds. How do I get the bytes from a socket as they come in?

  • crazy asp.net error

    Hi I am having a problem debugging an issue on a website. Everything works locally, the local and server databases are the same The strange thing about the error is that it points to my local dev machine in the error stack. Is that crazy or what, The files are published and being hosted on a server machine and the error is pointing to a line of code on my local dev box. I feel like I am losing the plot.   • Problem with CruiseControl.net configuration

    Hi I started using ccnet to build my project. This is quite new issue for me so I have some problems. First thing: Why does ccnet copy directory with my project to another directory (ccnet creates new folder named the same as project name included in ccnet.config file and copies to them directory with my project) Second thing: Dashboard page cannot show reports for recent build (When I click on any item in recent build then I get page: "The page Cannot be found" I suppose that page cannot link files with logs. but I don't know how to link it. I create one publisher: <publishers> <xmllogger logDir="c:\Branches" /> Can anyone help me?

  • Session Variable Not Being Updated? ASP.NET

    I have a three step wizard. On the first step I use a repeater to create a series of buttons that an individual can select from. When the user selects one of the buttons the value of the button is saved to session state. They are taken to the next step and shown a similar list of buttons that are based on what they previously selected. Thus, if you choose "Hamburger" you might receive the options of "onion", "lettuce", "tomato" while if you choose "Hot Dog" you might receive "sauerkraut" and "ketchup". Lets say an individual chooses Hamburger. This is saved into session state like so: Public Sub Button_ItemCommand(ByVal Sender As Object, ByVal e As RepeaterCommandEventArgs) ' ******** Lets pass on the results of our query in LinqDataSource1_Selecting. Session("food_select") = RTrim(e.CommandName) Wizard1.ActiveStepIndex = 1 End Sub Now, this works fine and dandy. But lets say I select hamburger and then realize I'm really hankering for a hot dog. I go back to the first wizard step and click on the hot dog button - but when the wizard progresses to the next step I still see the options for hamburgers! The session variable has not been updated.   • ASP.Net Problem with Event Handlers and Control Creation Timing

    What I am trying to achieve here is to display a number of LinkButtons in a RadGrid Column. The buttons are generated from a collection property member of the bound grid row item. The CollectionLinkButton control is nothing more than a asp:Panel derived control that populates its Child Controls from "DataItem.SomeCollection" and this is working fine.   • Copy EXIF Metadata from TIF to JPEG in C# / VB.NET

    Hello! I would really appreciate if you could shed light on this problem. I have 2 images, one was created from TIF file with metadata, the other is an in-memory image that will be saved as jpeg. Then I use this routine to transfer exif metadata from first image to the second one (that is from the one created from tif file to the in-memory image): For Each _p In image1.PropertyItems image2.SetPropertyItem(_p) Next And this works perfectly fine. All exif items are successfully copied. I confirmed this by using watches in debug mode. The problem comes when you save image2 as jpeg using this: Dim eps As EncoderParameters = New EncoderParameters(1) eps.Param(0) = New EncoderParameter(Encoder.Quality, 85) Dim ici As ImageCodecInfo = GetEncoderInfo("image/jpeg") image2.Save("C:\1.jpg", ici, eps) Only very few EXIF properties are saved with image2 jpeg file however, namely only camera model and camera maker. However If I save image2 as TIF, all properties from the original tif will be there. Can anyone explain why is that? Thanks.

    Rather than displaying a PNG in the browser window, I'd like the action result to trigger the file download dialogue box (you know the open, save as, etc). I can get this to work with the code below using an unknown content type, but the user then has to type in .png at the end of the file name.   • Ajax in existing asp .net project.

    hi , I have a web page devoloped in visual studio 2008. I have 4 dropdowns and a repeater in the page.based on the selection(search criteria) from the dropdowns the repeater value will change. and one dropdown selection will bind values to the other dropdown also. Since the page is causing a lot of postback we decided to implement ajax here. I am yet to learn ajax. Can anyone tell what is the best way to do this .which ajax control replace dropdowns? i have already server side code written on all dropdowns.     I am trying to create a new website on a remote server via msbuild (I like to call it "msdeploy"). I've downloaded and used the SDC tasks, the MSBuildExtension tasks and the MSBuildCommunity tasks but I simply can't get it right. I figure that WebDirectorySetting (from MSBuild.Community.Tasks.IIS) is my best bet but I can't find the right SettingName to pass. I'd like to use some sort of MSBuild task to accomplish this but maybe it just doesn't exist. Custom VBS or WMI are my last resort... Thanks

    Hi I'd like to find a component that help me to build input forms in asp MVC. I find that ther are many components (grid, tree, tab...) but not a "Form component". I know that i can use the HTML HELPER (.labelfor(.. .inputTextFor(... ) ..but i don't like to write the html tags around the fields and labels ( ... ) I want that all the form in my application look similar and, if a change is needed i want to make it in one place ( ex in the "FormComponentFactory()" for example ) I created my own FormComponent but i find myself reinvent the wheel..

    Hi, I'm trying to rewrite the url: https://mydomain/phone-append to https://mydomain/Service/PhoneAppend using the following rule: <rewrite> <rules> <rule name="Phone Append"> <match url="phone-append" /> <action type="Rewrite" url="/Services/Index" appendQueryString="true" /> </rule> </rules> </rewrite> The rule works fine if the rewrite url is /Services but when I change it to /Services/PhoneAppend I get a page not found error.   • Check malicious Redirect URL in ASP.NET

    I heard of sites using other site to redirect users either to their own site or to hide behind another site. In my code i redirect in a few places such as post a comment (its easier to use a return url then figure out the page using data given). How do i check if the return URL is my own url? I think i use absolute paths so i can easily check if the first character is '/' but then i will lose relative flexibility. This also disallows me from doing http://mysite.com/blah in the redirect url. I could patch the url by adding mysite + string but i'll need to figure out if string is a relative url or already a mysite.com url. Whats the easiest way to ensure i am only redirecting to my site?

    I'm wondering if it is possibile to customize routing in a way that all requests are evaluated by a piece of code, redirected to the relevant controller if a match is found or passed to next rout in list if not found. sample request: /my coolpage/another one the code searches and determine that the right controller for this is Page, action is "list" and id is "123" and so redirects another request: /products/list/5 code finds no match al passes it back to next route that knows how to handle it... any idea on how to do this?

Web browser (tested on IE8, Firefox 3.5.2, Opera 10) shows file length before I start download the file. When I run this code on remote IIS7, web browser doesn't shows file length. File length is unknown. Why I don't get file length when this code runs under IIS7?
