  • Python - output from functions?

    - by Seafoid
Hi I have a very rudimentary question. Assume I call a function, e.g., def foo(): x = 'hello world' How do I get the function to return x in such a way that I can use it as the input for another function or use the variable within the body of a program? When I use return and call the variable within another functions I get a NameError. Thanks, S :-)

  • How to get a debug flow of execution in C++

    - by Rich
Hi, I work on a global trading system which supports many users. Each user can book, amend, edit, delete trades. The system is regulated by a central deal capture service. The deal capture service informs all the user of any updates that occur. The problem comes when we have crashes, as the production environment is impossible to re-create on a test system, I have to rely on crash dumps and log files. However this doesn't tell me what the user has been doing. I'd like a system that would (at the time of crashing) dump out a history of what the user has been doing. Anything that I add has to go into the live environment so it can't impact performance too much. Ideas wise I was thinking of a MACRO at the top of each function which acted like a stack trace (only I could supply additional user information, like trade id's, user dialog choices, etc ..) The system would record stack traces (on a per thread basis) and keep a history in a cyclic buffer (varying in size, depending on how much history you wanted to capture). Then on crash, I could dump this history stack. I'd really like to hear if anyone has a better solution, or if anyone knows of an existing framework? Thanks Rich

  • Axis2 Web Service Client Generation - Types without modifying the client

    - by sstarcher
Is it possible with Axis2 and Eclipse to generate a Web Service client and have it use java types that you already have in packages instead of creating it's own types. Reason being of course if I have type A already created and it creates it's own Type A I can't just assign variable of type A to variable of type B. The wsdl is being generated from a Web Service deployed to an application server. If it's not possible to generate it from that would it be possible to generate a client from the already existing java files.

  • Why are these lines being skipped? (java)

    - by David
    Here's the relevant bit of the source code: class Dice { String name ; int x ; int[] sum ; ... public Dice (String name) { this.name = name ; this.x = 0 ; this.sum = new int[7] ; } ... public static void main (String[] arg) { Dice a1 = new Dice ("a1") ; printValues (a1) ; } public static void printDice (Dice Dice) { System.out.println (Dice.name) ; System.out.println ("value: "+Dice.x) ; printValues (Dice) ; } public static void printValues (Dice Dice) { for (int i = 0; i<Dice.sum.length; i++) System.out.println ("#of "+i+"'s: "+Dice.sum[i]) ; } } Here is the output: #of 0's: 0 #of 1's: 0 #of 2's: 0 #of 3's: 0 #of 4's: 0 #of 5's: 0 #of 6's: 0 Why didn't these two lines execute inside printDice: System.out.println (Dice.name) ; System.out.println ("value: "+Dice.x) ; if they had then i would expect to see "a1" and "Value: 0" printed at the top of the rows of #of's

  • DependencyProperty Orientation problem

    - by byte
I am learning WPF and am trying to create my first UserControl. My UserControl consists of StackPanel StackPanel contains a Label and TextBox I am trying to create two Dependency Properties Text for the Label Orientation for the StackPanel - The orientation will affect the position of the Label and TextBox effectively I have successfully created a Text dependency property and bind it to my UserControls . But when I created the Orientation property, I seem to get following error in get property The as operator must be used with a reference type or nullable type ('System.Windows.Controls.Orientation' is a non-nullable value type) public static DependencyProperty OrientationProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("Orientation", typeof(System.Windows.Controls.Orientation), typeof(MyControl), new PropertyMetadata((System.Windows.Controls.Orientation)(Orientation.Horizontal))); public Orientation Orientation { get { return GetValue(OrientationProperty) as System.Windows.Controls.Orientation; } set { SetValue(OrientationProperty, value); } } Appreciate your help.

  • Python: When passing variables between methods, is it necessary to assign it a new name?

    - by Anthony
I'm thinking that the answer is probably 'no' if the program is small and there are a lot of methods, but what about in a larger program? If I am going to be using one variable in multiple methods throughout the program, is it smarter to: Come up with a different phrasing for each method (to eliminate naming conflicts). Use the same name for each method (to eliminate confusion) Just use a global variable (to eliminate both) This is more of a stylistic question than anything else. What naming convention do YOU use when passing variables?

  • Cannot Generate ParameterSetMetadata While Programmatically Creating A Parameter Block

    - by Steven Murawski
I'm trying to programmatically create a parameter block for a function ( along the lines of this blog post ). I'm starting with a CommandMetadata object (from an existing function). I can create the ParameterMetadata object and set things like the ParameterType, the name, as well as some attributes. The problem I'm running into is that when I use the GetParamBlock method of the ProxyCommand class, none of my attributes that I set in the Attributes collection of the ParameterMetadata are generated. The problem this causes is that when the GetParamBlock is called, the new parameter is not annotated with the appropriate Parameter attribute. Example: function test { [CmdletBinding()] param ( [Parameter()] $InitialParameter) Write-Host "I don't matter." } $MetaData = New-Object System.Management.Automation.CommandMetaData (get-command test) $NewParameter = New-Object System.Management.Automation.ParameterMetadata 'NewParameter' $NewParameter.ParameterType = [string[]] $Attribute = New-Object System.Management.Automation.ParameterAttribute $Attribute.Position = 1 $Attribute.Mandatory = $true $Attribute.ValueFromPipeline = $true $NewParameter.Attributes.Add($Attribute) $MetaData.Parameters.Add('NewParameter', $NewParameter) [System.Management.Automation.ProxyCommand]::GetParamBlock($MetaData)

  • SSL_accept hangs... sometimes ( C, linux, openssl )

    - by zbigh
I'm currently working on an embedded linux system. There are two crucial client applications on the system that connect to an external server ( on another embedded system, all written in C ). The two apps use different certificates. The ssl connection works... At least usually, but from time to time an error occures: the server hangs on SSL_accept() when accepting connection from one of the applications - the one using older certificates. Restarting the server application does not help, nor does restarting the client - the only way is to reboot the server system, unless I create a symbilic link to the new certificates used by the other app - only then will restarting the server app work. Never does the error occur when both applications use the same, new certificate. Could this happen due to some strange openssl cache or something like that?

  • Calling and writing javascript functions

    - by Ankur
I think I have not got the syntax correct for writing a javascript function and calling it to assign its return value to a variable. My function is: getObjName(objId){ var objName =""; $.ajax( { type : "GET", url : "Object", dataType: 'json', data : "objId="+objId, success : function(data) { objName = data; } }); return objName; } I am trying to call it and assign it to a variable with: var objName = getObjName(objId); However Eclipse is telling me that "there is no such function getObjName() defined"

  • lapply slower than for-loop when used for a BiomaRt query. Is that expected?

    - by ptocquin
I would like to query a database using BiomaRt package. I have loci and want to retrieve some related information, let say description. I first try to use lapply but was surprise by the time needed for the task to be performed. I thus tried a more basic for-loop and get a faster result. Is that expected or is something wrong with my code or with my understanding of apply ? I read other posts dealing with *apply vs for-loop performance (Here, for example) and I was aware that improved performance should not be expected but I don't understand why performance here is actually lower. Here is a reproducible example. 1) Loading the library and selecting the database : library("biomaRt") athaliana <- useMart("plants_mart_14") athaliana <- useDataset("athaliana_eg_gene",mart=athaliana) 2) Querying the database : loci <- c("at1g01300", "at1g01800", "at1g01900", "at1g02335", "at1g02790", "at1g03220", "at1g03230", "at1g04040", "at1g04110", "at1g05240" ) I create a function for the use in lapply : foo <- function(loci) { getBM("description","tair_locus",loci,athaliana) } When I use this function on the first element : > system.time(foo(cwp_loci[1])) utilisateur système écoulé 0.020 0.004 1.599 When I use lapply to retrieve the data for all values : > system.time(lapply(loci, foo)) utilisateur système écoulé 0.220 0.000 16.376 I then created a new function, adding a for-loop : foo2 <- function(loci) { for (i in loci) { getBM("description","tair_locus",loci[i],athaliana) } } Here is the result : > system.time(foo2(loci)) utilisateur système écoulé 0.204 0.004 10.919 Of course, this will be applied to a big list of loci, so the best performing option is needed. I thank you for assistance. EDIT Following recommendation of @MartinMorgan Simply passing the vector loci to getBM greatly improves the query efficiency. Simpler is better. > system.time(lapply(loci, foo)) utilisateur système écoulé 0.236 0.024 110.512 > system.time(foo2(loci)) utilisateur système écoulé 0.208 0.040 116.099 > system.time(foo(loci)) utilisateur système écoulé 0.028 0.000 6.193

  • nUnit Assert.That(method,Throws.Exception) not catching exceptions

    - by JasonM
Hi Everyone, Can someone tell me why this unit test that checks for exceptions fails? Obviously my real test is checking other code but I'm using Int32.Parse to show the issue. [Test] public void MyTest() { Assert.That(Int32.Parse("abc"), Throws.Exception.TypeOf<FormatException>()); } The test fails, giving this error. • Processes Allocation in .Net

    - by mayap
I'm writing some program which should perform calculations concurrently according to inputs which reach the system all the time. I'm considering 2 approaches to allocate "calculation" processes: Allocating processes in the system initialization, insert the ids to Processes table, and each time I want to perform calculation, I will check in the table which process is free. The questions: can I be sure that those processes are only for my use and that the operating system doesn't use them? Not allocating processes in advance. Each time when calculation should be done ask the operating system for free process. I need to know the following inputs from a "calculation" process: When calculation is finished and also if it succeeded or failed If a processes has failed I need to assign the calculation to another process Thanks in advance. Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to create a String Array and link it to a Grade array

    - by user1861544
I have a project that I need to create 2 Arrays, one to hold Student Names and one to hold Student Scores. The user inputs the size of the array, and the array needs to be sorted using BubbleSort (putting the high scores at the top). I have started the project, created the first array for scores, I have successfully done bubble sort and sorted the grades. Now I can't figure out how to make an array for Names, and once I do how do I make the names array correspond to the Grades array BubbleSort? Here is the code I have so far. import java.util.Scanner; public class Grades { public static void main(String[]args){ { Scanner UserIn = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.print( "How many students are there? " ); int[]GradeArray = new int[UserIn.nextInt()]; for( int i=0 ; i<GradeArray.length ; i++ ) { System.out.print( "Enter Grade for Student " + (i+1) + ": " ); GradeArray[i] = UserIn.nextInt(); } bubbleSort(GradeArray); for( int i : GradeArray ) System.out.println( i ); System.out.println(); } } private static void bubbleSort(int[]GradeArray){ int n = GradeArray.length; int temp = 0; String temp2; for(int i=0; i<n; i++){ for(int j=1; j<(n-i);j++){ if(GradeArray[j-1]<GradeArray[j]){ //swap temp=GradeArray[j-1]; GradeArray[j-1]=GradeArray[j]; GradeArray[j]=temp; } } } } } Also how do I change the grades to Double? I started with Int and when I try to change everything to double I get an error saying "Found Double, expected Int".
