• Localized tables and Entity Framework

  Hi all, I have a scenario where I need to localized values of objects in my database. Let's say you have an application that can create animals, if the user is english the value of the "Name" property of an animal would be entered as "Cat" in the UI whereas it would be entered as "Chat" in french. The animal culture table would contain 2 records pointing to the same animal in the parent table. When reading values back, if the value of "Name" does not exist in the user culture the default value (value the object was originally created with) would be used. The following diagrams demonstrate how the data is stored in SQL: I'm trying to map this schema to an object model using the Entity Framework, I'm a bit confused as to what the best way to approach the problem. • Ruby: change each value in a hash with something like #collect for arrays?

  Hi! I'd like to replace each value in a hash with value.some_method. For example in a simple hash {"a" = "b", "c" = "d"} every value should be .upcase-d so it looks like {"a" = "B", "c" = "D"}. I tried #collect and #map but always just get arrays back. Is there an 'elegant' way to do this? Thanks in advance, Adam Nonymous UPDATE: Damn, I forgot: The hash is in an instance variable which should not be changed. I need a new hash with the changed values, but would prefer not to define that variable explicitly and then loop over the hash filling it. Something like new_hash = hash.magic {...} ;)

• SQL indexing on varchar

  I have a table whose columns are varchar(50) and a float - I need to (very quickly) look get the float associated with a given string. Even with indexing, this is rather slow. I know, however, that each string is associated with an integer, which I know at the time of lookup, so that each string maps to a unique integer, but each integer does not map to a unique string. One might think of it as a tree structure. Is there anything to be gained by adding this integer to the table, indexing on it, and using a query like SELECT floatval FROM mytable WHERE phrase=givenstring AND assoc=givenint? This is Postgres, and if you couldn't tell, I have very little experience with databases.

• Huge file in Clojure and Java heap space error

  I posted before on a huge XML file - it's a 287GB XML with Wikipedia dump I want ot put into CSV file (revisions authors and timestamps). I managed to do that till some point. Before I got the StackOverflow Error, but now after solving the first problem I get: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space error.   This is a follow-up question to What should every programmer know and Is mathematics necessary. So the question is, as a computer programmer, what is the most important/useful mathematical or numerical formula that you use? By Formula I mean anything that involves less obvious manipulations, whenever binomial coefficients or bit hacks. I work with multidimensional arrays and various matrix representations. So for me most commonly used formulas are: A(i,j,k,..) = a[i + j*Dim0 + k*Dim0*Dim1 + ... to map indexes to one dimension ( which is basic address calculation which many people do not seem to know). And triangular number T(i) = (i*i + i)/2 which is related to binomial coefficients, used to calculate address in triangular matrixes and many other things. What is your workhorse formula that you think programmer should know?

  Hi, I have just started learning Scala and I'm now wondering how I could implement two different Java interfaces with one Scala class? Let's say I have the following interfaces written in Java public interface EventRecorder { public void abstract record(Event event); } public interface TransactionCapable { public void abstract commit(); } But a Scala class can extend only one class at a time. How can I have a Scala class that could fulfill both contracts? Do I have to map those interfaces into traits? Note, my Scala classes would be used from Java as I am trying to inject new functionality written in Scala into an existing Java application. And the existing framework expects that both interface contracts are fulfilled.

• C++/MFC: Handling multiple CListCtrl's headers HDN_ITEMCLICK events

  I'm coding an MFC application in which i have a dialog box with multiple CListCtrls in report view. I want one of them to be sortable. So i handled the HDM_ITEMCLICK event, and everything works just fine .. Except that if i click on the headers of another CListCtrl, it does sort the OTHER CListCtrl, which does look kind of dumb. This is apparently due to the fact that headers have an ID of 0, which make the entry in the message map look like this : ON_NOTIFY(HDN_ITEMCLICK, 0, &Ccreationprogramme::OnHdnItemclickList5) But since all the headers have an id of zero, apparently every header of my dialog sends the message. Is there an easy way around this problem ?

• Strange Google Maps v3 geocode behavior when a quote is in the address

  See my test page. When on the page, click the top left button "Geocode". If you are in Firefox, geocoder.geocode() will have it's status equal to ERROR (and pop an alert after a few seconds). In Internet Explorer (at least 7), everything is fine and the marker is added to the map. If you remove the quote from the address (l'Assomption -- lAssomption), everything execute fine in Firefox. Now with my question: how a quote can "crash" the Google Maps V3 API only in Firefox!?

• Does mod_rewrite in subdirectories' .htaccess override higher levels?

  I'm using mod_rewrite to map my old directory structure to a new one. I have the following rule in my top-level .htaccess file, and it works: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} /blog/archives/(.*) RewriteRule ^.*$ /archives/%1 [L,R=301] As you can guess, this takes http://example.com/blog/archives/00001.php and redirects it to http://example.com/archives/00001.php. But when I add these rewrite rules to the .htaccess file in the /blog directory RewriteEngine on RewriteRule atom.xml$ /atom.xml [L,R=301] the top-level redirect no longer works. If I move the rule in the /blog .htaccess file to the top-levle file both rules work. Can someone explain what is happening here?

  I have a query to get the IDs of people in a particular order, say: ids = [1, 3, 5, 9, 6, 2] I then want to fetch those people by Person.find(ids) But they are always fetched in numerical order, I know this by performing: people = Person.find(ids).map(&:id) => [1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9] How can I run this query so that the order is the same as the order of the ids array? I made this task more difficult as I wanted to only perform the query to fetch people once, from the IDs given. So, performing multiple queries is out of the question. I tried something like: ids.each do |i| person = people.where('id = ?', i) But I don't think this works.

• In django models, how to make all table names not have the app label?

  I have a database that was already being used by other applications before i began writing a web interface with django for it. The table names follow simple naming standards, so the django model Customer should map to the table "customer" in the db. At the same time I'm adding new tables/models. Since I find it cumbersome to use app_customer every time i have to write a query (django's ORM is definitely not enough for them) in the other applications and I don't want to rename the existing tables, what is the best way to make all models in my django app use tables without applabel_, besides adding a Meta class with db_table= to each model? Is there any reason why I shouldn't do this? I have only one web app that needs to access this db, everything else doesn't use django models.

• Asset tracking in "real-time" - how best to display in browser?

  I am developing an asset tracking system, standard LAMP, and now am wondering how best to present the data to the user in the browser. I expect to track and most a few thousand items, and to refresh them every second or so. I want to draw a floorplan or map of the area and represent the assets the assets symbolically on that (with different symbols for different classes of assets). Additionally, the user should be able to click on an asset to interact with it, and search for a particular asset and centre the screen on it, draw a circle round it, etc http://graphite.wikidot.com/ Looks good - is there any alternative? At its simplest, I suppose I could just generate a JPEG and display it, using CSS to let me know if/where a user clicks ... but what's the "best" way to do it?

  I am developing an application to read an excel spreadsheet, validate the data and then map it to a sql table. The process is to read the file via a streamreader, validate the data, manually make corrections to the excel spreadsheet, validate again -- repeat this process until all data validates. If the excel spreadsheet is open, then when I attempt to read the data via a streamreader I get an error, "The process cannot access the file ... because it is being used by another process." Is there a way to remove the lock or otherwise read the data into a streamreader without having to open and close excel each time?

I want to use a bitstream to pick letters of the English alphabet such that the odds of any one letter coming up is the same as the odds of any other letter (I know real words aren't like that and have specific frequency distributions for each letter but it doesn't matter here). What's the best way to use binary 0/1 decisions to pick letters fairly from the set A-Z? I can think of a few ways to map bits onto letters but it's not obvious to me that they won't be biased. • Can 3D OpenGL game written in Python look good and run fast?

  I am planning to write an simple 3d(isometric view) game in Java using jMonkeyEngine - nothing to fancy, I just want to learn something about OpenGL and writing efficient algorithms (random map generating ones). When I was planning what to do, I started wondering about switching to Python. I know that Python didn't come into existence to be a tool to write 3d games, but is it possible to write good looking games with this language? I have in mind 3d graphics, nice effects and free CPU time to power to rest of game engine? I had seen good looking java games - and too be honest, I was rather shocked when I saw level of detail achieved in Runescape HD. On the other hand, pygame.org has only 2d games, with some starting 3d projects. Are there any efficient 3d game engines for python? Is pyopengl the only alternative? Good looking games in python aren't popular or possible to achieve? I would be grateful for any information / feedback.
