• Interesting SSMS issue with waittype of PREEMPTIVE_OS_LOOKUPACCOUNTSID

  Saw a recent issue with SQL2008 sp 1 where SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) appeared to hang when a DBA expanded the database users tab of a database… ie like this :-   When we looked at the waittype of the SSMS session - via sys.dm_os_waiting_tasks– it was waiting on PREEMPTIVE_OS_LOOKUPACCOUNTSID. I’d not come across this waittype before, and there was very little information out on the web for it.. Looking at this issue using SQL Profiler – it them became apparent that SSMS was waiting on the function SUSER_SNAME. I did a quick test using SET STATISTICS TIME to prove it was the SUSER_SNAME function causing our issue :- SELECT * FROM sys.database_principals   -- completes in 6 milliseconds SELECT SUSER_SNAME(sid),* FROM sys.database_principals  -- completes in 188941 milliseconds. suser_sname validates a sid against Active Directory.. What I haven’t mentioned so far is that the database in question had been restored from a server on a different domain. This domain was untrusted from the current domain. However, it appeared that SSMS was still trying to validate the Windows login of each user when displaying the users list…. and taking a long time to return NULL for each user from the untrusted domain. When all users that had a login from the untrusted domain are removed from the database – this fixed the issue. To find out the users that had this issue :- SELECT name FROM sys.database_principals WHERE type_desc IN(‘WINDOWS_USER’, ‘WINDOWS_GROUP’) and SUSER_SNAME(sid) IS NULL Although I have not raised this as a case with MS – I do think this is a bug in SSMS – I do not see why windows logins should need to be validated when displaying only user details..

• Suppress EXT3-fs warning on mount

  I am familiar with output suppress on Unix machines, ie: cat /file/that/doesnt/exist > /dev/null 2>& However I can't seem to suppress the output of mount when an ext3 filesystem is mounted for the nth time, and it recommends an fsck. As it happens, fscks are run regularly by another machine, so these warning messages are needlessly interrupting the flow of output to my pretty bash script. These are the errors: # mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 /mnt > /dev/null 2>& kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds EXT3-fs warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended EXT3 FS 2.4-0.9.19, 19 August 2002 on sd(8,1), internal journal EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Can anyone shed some light on this? I'm clearly blocking both fd's, but somehow output is still getting through. This is GNU Bash v2.05a

• 0xC0017011 and other error messages - what is the error message text?

  Recently there was a bug raised against BIDS Helper which originated in my Expression Editor control. Thankfully the person that raised it kindly included a screenshot, so I had the error code (HRESULT 0xC0017011) and a stack trace that pointed the finger firmly at my control, but no error message text. The code itself looked fine so I searched on the error code but got no results. I’d expected to get a hit from Books Online with the Integration Services Error and Message Reference topic at the very least, but no joy. There is however a more accurate and definitive reference, namely the header file that defines all these codes dtsmsg.h which you can find at- C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\SDK\Include\dtsmsg.h Looking the code up in the header file gave me a much more useful error message. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// // The parameter is sensitive // // MessageId: DTS_E_SENSITIVEPARAMVALUENOTALLOWED // // MessageText: // // Accessing value of the parameter variable for the sensitive parameter "%1!s!" is not allowed. Verify that the variable is used properly and that it protects the sensitive information. // #define DTS_E_SENSITIVEPARAMVALUENOTALLOWED ((HRESULT)0xC0017011L) Unfortunately I’d forgotten all about this. By the time I had remembered about it, the person who raised the issue had managed to narrow it down to something to do with having  sensitive parameter. Putting that together with the error message I’d finally found, a quick poke around in the code and I found the new GetSensitiveValue method which seemed to do the trick. The HResult fields are also listed online but it only shows the short error message, and it doesn’t include that all so important HRESULT value itself. So let this be a lesson to you (and me!), if you need to check  SSIS error go straight to the horses mouth - dtsmsg.h. This is particularly true when working with early builds, or CTP releases when we expect the documentation to be a bit behind. There is also a programmatic approach to getting better SSIS error messages. I should to take another look at the error handling in the control, or the way it is hosted in BIDS Helper. I suspect that if I use an implementation of Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper.IDTSInfoEvents100 I could catch the error itself and get the full error message text which I could then report back. This would obviously be a better user experience and also make it easier to diagnose any issues like this in the future. See ExprssionEvaluator.cs for an example of this in use in the Expression Editor control.

  Paypal offer Automatic Billing Buttons (https://merchant.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?cmd=_render-content&content_ID=developer/e_howto_html_autobill_buttons#id105ED800NBF) which allow regular billing for different amounts. After a couple of hours googling I cannot find how to access this functionality using the API, so that it can be automated as opposed to done manually via the paypal account. Is it possible? Can someone point me to a sample/reference?

Dependent on the use case the session Id is looked up for, the difference may not be important. Another difference however, is of importance. The cookie reading only works if the session Id is added as a cookie to the request, which is configurable for applications in the weblogic-application.xml file. If cookies are disabled, then the server adds the session ID to the request URL (actually it appends it to the end of the URI, so right after the view Id reference). In this case however no cookie is set so that the lookup returns empty. In both cases however, the getId variant works.

• How do I import my first sprites?

  Continuing from this question (new question - now unrelated) So I have a thorough background in programming already (algorithms, math, logic, graphing problems, etc.) however I've never attempted to code a game before. In fact, I've never had anything more than minimal input from a user during the execution of a program. Generally input was given from a file or passed through console, all necessary functions were performed, then the program terminated with an output. I decided to try and get in on the world of game development. From several posts I've seen around gamedev.stackexchange.com XNA seems to be a favorite, and it was recommended to me when I asked where to start. I've downloaded and installed Visual Studio 2010 along with the XNA Framework and now I can't seem to get moving in the right direction. I started out looking on Google for "xna game studio tutorial", "xna game development beginners", "my first xna game", etc. I found lots of crap. The official "Introduction to Game Studio 4.0" gave me this (plus my own train of thought happily pasted on top thanks to MSPaint): http://tinypic.com/r/2w1sgvq/7 The "Get Additional Help" link (my best guess, since there was no "Continue" or "Next" link) lead me to this page: http://tinypic.com/r/2qa0dgx/7 I tried every page. The forum was the only thing that seemed helpful, however searching for "beginner", "newbie", "getting started", "first project", and similar on the forums turned up many threads with specific questions that are a bit above my level ("beginner to collision detection", for instance) Disappointed I returned to the XNA Game Studio home page. Surely their own website would have some introduction, tutorial, or at least a useful link to a community. EVERYTHING on their website was about coding Windows Phone 7.... • BizTalk Send Ports, Delivery Notification and ACK / NACK messages

  Recently I worked on an orchestration which sent messages out to a Send Port on a 'fire and forget' basis. The idea was that once the orchestration passed the message to the Messagebox, it was left to BizTalk to manage the sending process. Should the send operation fail, the Send Port got suspended, and the orchestration completed asynchronously, regardless of the Send Port success or failure. However, we still wanted to log the sending success, using the ACK / NACK messages. On normal ports, BizTalk generates ACK / NACK messages back to the Messagebox, if the logical port's Delivery Notification property is set to 'Transmitted'. Unfortunately, this setting also causes the orchestration to wait for the send port's result, and should the Send Port fail, the orchestration will also receive a 'DeliveryFailureException' exception. So we may end up with a suspended port and a suspended orchestration - not the outcome wanted here, there was no value in suspending the orchestration in our case. There are a couple of ways to fix this: 1. Catch the DeliveryFailureException  (full type name Microsoft.XLANGs.BaseTypes.DeliveryFailureException) and do nothing in the orchestration's exception block. Although this works, it still slows down the orchestration as the orchestration still has to wait for the outcome of the send port operation. 2. Use a Direct Port instead, and set the ACK request on the message Context, prior passing to the port: msgToSend(BTS.AckRequired) = true; This has to be done in an expression shape, as a Direct logical port does not have Delivery Notification property - make sure to add a reference to Microsoft.BizTalk.GlobalPropertySchemas. Setting this context value in the message will cause the messaging agent to create an appropriate ACK or NACK message after the port execution. The ACK / NACK messages can be caught and logged by dedicated Send Ports, filtering on BTS.AckType value (which is either ACK or NACK). ACK/NACK messages are treated in a special way by BizTalk, and a useful feature is that the original message's context values are copied to the ACK/NACK message context - these can be used for logging the right information. Other useful context properties of the ACK/NACK messages: -  BTS.AckSendPortName can be used to identify the original send port. - BTS.AckOwnerID, aka http://schemas.microsoft.com/BizTalk/2003/system-properties.AckOwnerID - holds the instance ID of the failed Send Port - can be used to resubmit / terminate the instance Someone may ask, can we just turn off the Delivery Notification on a 'normal' port, and set the AckRequired property on the message as for a Direct port. Unfortunately, this does not work - BizTalk seems to remove this property automatically, if the message goes through a port where Delivery Notification is set to None.

• Multithreading: Communication from Parent thread to child thread

  I have a List of threads normally 3 threads each of the threads reference a webbrowser control that communicates with the parent control to populate a datagridview. What I need to do is when the user clicks the button in a datagridviewButtonCell corresponding data will be sent back to the webbrowser control within the child thread that originally communicated with the main thread. but when I try to do this I receive the following error message 'COM object that has been separated from its underlying RCW cannot be used.' my problem is that I can not figure out how to reference the relevant webbrowser control. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me.   When creating unit tests for those other objects, what is the best way to create mock objects that provide data to other objects. Should they be created at a 'high level' and intercept the calls as soon as possible, or should they be done at a 'low level' and so make as much as the real code still be called? e.g. I'm writing a test for some code that requires a NoteMapper object that allows Notes to be loaded from the DB. class NoteMapper { function getNote($sqlQueryFactory, $noteID) { // Create an SQL query from $sqlQueryFactory // Run that SQL // if null // return null // else // return new Note($dataFromSQLQuery) } } I could either mock this object at a high level by creating a mock NoteMapper object, so that there are no calls to the SQL at all e.g. class MockNoteMapper { function getNote($sqlQueryFactory, $noteID) { //$mockData = {'Test Note title', "Test note text" } // return new Note($mockData); } } Or I could do it at a very low level, by creating a MockSQLQueryFactory that instead of actually querying the database just provides mock data back, and passing that to the current NoteMapper object. It seems that creating mocks at a high level would be easier in the short term, but that in the long term doing it at a low level would be more powerful and possibly allow more automation of tests e.g. by recording data in an out of a DB and then replaying that data for tests.   When you go to the Appendix D in Oracle Text Reference they provide lists of stopwords used by Oracle Text when indexing table contents. When I see the English list, nothing puzzles me. But the reason why the French list includes moyennant (French for in view of which) for example is unclear. Oracle has probably thought it through more than once before including it. How would you constitute a list of appropriate stopwords if you were to design an indexer?

Is there a way to tell the crontab to be silent or only e-mail on error? • How do I make the launcher progress bar work with my application?

  Background Research I am attempting to update the progress bar within the Unity launcher for a simple python/Gtk application created using Quickly called test; however, following the instructions in this video, I have not been able to successfully update the progress bar in the Unity launcher. In the Unity Integration video, Quickly was not used, so the way that the application was structured was slightly different, and the code used in the video does not seem to function properly without modification in a default Quickly ubuntu-application template application. Screenshots Here is a screenshot of the application icon as it is currently displayed in the Unity Launcher. Here is a screenshot of the kind of Unity launcher progress bar functionality that I would like (overlayed on mail icon: wiki.ubuntu.com). Problem Investigation I believe that the problem is that I am not properly getting a reference to the application's main window, however, I am not sure how to properly fix this problem. I also believe that the line: self.launcher = Unity.LauncherEntry.get_for_desktop_id("test.destkop") may be another source of complication because Quickly creates .desktop.in files rather than ordinary .desktop files, so I am not sure if that might be causing issues as well. Perhaps, another source of the issue is that I do not entirely understand the difference between .desktop and .desktop.in files. Does it possibly make sense to make a copy of the test.desktop.in file and rename it test.desktop, and place it in /usr/share/applications in order for get_for_desktop_id("test,desktop") to reference the correct .desktop file?
