  What is the exact point of using external database system if I have simple relations (95% querries are dependant on ID). I am storing users and their stats. Why would I use external database if I can have neat constructions like: db.users[32] = something Array of 500K users is not that big effort for RAM Pros are: no problematic asynchronity (instant results) easy export/import dealing with database like with a native object LITERALLY ps. and considerations: Would it be faster or slower to do collection[3] than db.query("select ... I am going to store it as a file/s There is only ONE application/process accessing this data, and the code is executed line by line - please don't elaborate about locking. Please don't answer with database propositions but why to use external DB over native array/object - I have experience in a few databases - that's not the case. What I am building is a client/gateway/server(s) game. Gateway deals with all users data, processing, authenticating, writing statistics e.t.c No other part of software needs to access directly to this data/database.

• Windows Upgrade vs Full Install

  I'm in the process of purchasing a Netbook for use while traveling. The included OS is XP, however, I would like to upgrade(?) to Windows 7. My question: Does a Windows Upgrade have the same physical footprint and performance as a full install? Does an upgrade leave behind non used files/resources that were originally included in XP? If so, are there ways to reduce this? I'm trying to reduce as much OS bloat as possible. Please let me know if my question is unclear. Thanks.   I can't seem to find the answer to my questions -- hence my posting this here. 1) I have encrypted my home folder in LinuxMint 15 Cinammon x64. If I create images of LM's partitions via fsarchiver, how do I go about selectively restoring home folders, and files from the FS images? 2) I haven't done this yet; but can I restore another users home folder into another user; both unencrypted. Is that a fairly common thing to do in Linux/ubuntu? I mean is the process fairly straightforward? What if the home folder I want to copy over to another user is encrypted? Thx

• Cloning Win 7 installation from MBR to GPR drive and make it bootable

  I've seen threads on similar topics - such as this one - but the answers never seem to solve how to make it bootable. I have Win 7 64-bit on a PC installed on a 2tb MBR volume. The motherboard is UEFI compatible. I just installed a secondary internal 3TB drive which will be partitioned as GPT. Is there a relatively easy way to clone my installation over to the new drive and have that drive be bootable? I have used EaseUS Partition Master to clone the C volume to the D volume, but that would not boot and I assume the issue is that one is MBR and one is GPT. Is there a process to do this?

• SSH login to Cisco switch using Rancid times out

  I have a 3560 switch that I have configured to accept SSH logins, and this works fine. However I cannot get Rancid to complete the login process to any of my switches using SSH. I get a timeout error after a minute or so. Telnet logins work fine with the same username and password. Here is my rancid setup in .cloginrc: add user * {myuser} add password * {strongAccessPassword} {strongEnablePassword} add method * ssh telnet Then, when I run bin/clogin 10.10.1.10 I get: # bin/clogin 10.10.1.10 10.10.1.10 spawn ssh -c 3des -x -l myuser 10.10.1.10 ############################################### Please authenticate. ############################################### Password: Error: TIMEOUT reached Again, when I do this using telnet as my preferred mothod in .cloginrc, it works without issue.

• Firefox: This connection is untrusted + Behind corporate firewall

  I've seen some similar issues strewn throughout Google's results about this, but none seem to be corporate-specific. I continually get the 'This connection is untrusted' screen every time I attempt to log into a secure site...for instance Gmail. This is pretty annoying as sometimes I have to go through the process of adding the exception two or three times before it finally lets me into Gmail. I am behind a corporate firewall, going through an internal proxy server to get to the Internet, so there is no possibility for me to update the firewall...etc. Does anybody know a way around this? Can it simply be disabled (and is that safe)? EDIT I'm going to reopen this question with a bit of new information. I have been using Google Chrome lately until today, and one thing that I noticed was that I never had this issue when using either Chrome or Internet Explorer. Is there something that these other browsers do that I need to manually do in FF?

• Linux: find thin server running on port 80 and kill it

  On my Linux server I ran: sudo thin start -p 80 -d Now I'd like to restart the sever. The trouble is, I can't seem to get the old process to kill it. I tried: netstat -anp But what I see on port 80 is this: Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - So, it didn't give me a PID to kill... I tried pgrep -l thin but that gave me nothing. Meanwhile pgrep -l ruby gives me like 6 processes running. I don't really understand why multiple ruby threads would be running, or which one I need to kill... How do I kill / restart the thin daemon?

• How do I create a .deb file?

  Yes, I know that this question has been asked many times before, but none of the answers really helped. I'd like to package the Minecraft launcher (which has no proprietary code, AFAIK,) into a .deb file so that I can put it on a flash drive and share it with my friends. I have managed to install Minecraft it manually (put some files into /opt/minecraft, download an icon, and create a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications,) and I have made a shell script that completely automates the process, but it relies on wget to retrieve a few files, including the .desktop file. (It isn't a self-extracting archive, after all.) I'd like to be able to do this offline, as a lot of my friends have slow or no internet. (One of their internet lines was buried so shallowly that it actually got knocked out by the lawnmower.) I won't be loading it into a PPA or anything like that; I just want it to be a "formal" package that can be easily installed and uninstalled. (One thing that I would like is for sudo apt-get purge minecraft to also remove the .minecraft folder. It would also be nice to define the dependedcies as being able to accept OpenJDK or Sun's JVM.) Oh, just so you know, the Minecraft launcher is a .jar file, but I can very, very easily launch it via shell scripts. The exact command is right on the download page.

• How can I selectively increase latency? E.g. throttle games

  Basically, I want networked games to run poorly on a network, but I want everything else to run smoothly. I would also appreciate advice on blocking games in general. As far as I can tell, there's a few ways to completely prevent an internet game from running: Blocking entirely via DNS configuration (e.g. hosts file), or router DNS configuration Blocking entirely via a separate DNS server Blocking the application, by uninstalling or some kind of access control Blocking the application by automatically killing the process every once in a while Blocking the application by corrupting files periodically However, I would like a more subtle way to block a program. Something that either: Increases latency (would this be doable through some kind of QoS like what DD-WRT offers?) Increases latency by using a special routing configuration for specific target IPs Throttle other systems resources, such as memory, IO, or CPU Screw around with keyboard configurations when a game is launched I would like this to work on MacOSX and Windows, but Linux would be great too. FYI I don't have a kid, but I was brainstorming with some friends and parents.

• Print driver installs failing

  All of the Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise machines in my organization are failing to install a good number of printer drivers that previously installed without issue. This only happens with printer drivers. And not with all printer drivers. Just some. Network drivers, video drivers, etc. have had no problems. The error that appears in Device Manager is "The driver cannot be installed because it is either not digitally signed or not signed in the appropriate manner." It appears to be signed fine though. It has an accompanying .CAT file and worked previously. If I take it off the domain, it installs fine. But it doesn't seem to have anything to do with Group Policy. I moved the machine to an OU that blocks inheritance, ran a gpupdate, ran rsop.msc to verify, and tried again. And it still didn't work. Likewise, I removed a machine from the domain, manually set all of the domain Group Policy settings in gpedit.msc, and tried that way, and it worked fine. So it seems like the Group Policy settings are irrelevant. What other domain-related issue could be causing this though? Any ideas on what to try next would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure where to go from here. Thanks!

• How to track down a file descriptor leak?

  I have a java process (Glassfish) which is leaking file descriptors. I know this because I get the helpful java.io.IOException: Too many open files exception. I can look in /proc/PID#/fd and see all the open file descriptors. When I use lsof I get a very large number of entries like this: java 18510 root 8811u sock 0,4 1576079 can't identify protocol java 18510 root 8812u sock 0,4 1576111 can't identify protocol java 18510 root 8813u sock 0,4 1576150 can't identify protocol I see 12 new ones created per minute. What options can I use on lsof or what other tools are available to me to help track down socket file descriptors where the protocol can't be identified? thanks, chuck

  I sent a mail from my machine relayed through a public mail server to my gmail account using smtp on telnet. now when i select show original on for that mail in my gmail account. I see several headers just before the body of my mail. X-TM-AS-Product-Ver: X-TM-AS-Result: X-imss-scan-details: X-TM-AS-User-Approved-Sender: X-TM-AS-User-Blocked-Sender: Are these headers being added by gmail or my mail server. How do I find out. • Computer is totally crashed

  my computer kept restarting on its own at random times varying from 1 minutes, to 20 minutes(then goind in a constant restart loop every ~10 seconds). I had to turn it off and wait minutes or hours before attempting to restarting to go further in the boot process. Now, it just does not turn on. I posted this before: Computer crashes every 2 to 10 minutes but I did not have the time to check the temperature. I don't want to pay to get it checked up, but I want to know what is wrong. Is the processor fried? Thank you

  I was using UCK to customize an Ubuntu 11.10 image, and ran a dist-upgrade on it (from the console) to try to update all of the packages on it.   Already 10 days has passed since SQL Bits X in London. I really enjoyed it! Those kind of events are great not only for the content but also to meet friends that – due to distance – is not possible to meet every day. Friends from PASS, SQL CAT, Microsoft, MVP and so on all in one place, drinking beers, whisky and having fun. A perfect mixture for a great learning and sharing experience! I’ve also enjoyed a lot delivering my session on Temporal Snapshot Fact Tables. Given that the subject is very specific I was not expecting a lot of attendees….but I was totally wrong! It seems that the problem of handling daily snapshot of data is more common than what I expected. I’ve also already had feedback from several attendees that applied the explained technique to their existing solution with success. • Pub banter - content strategy at the ballot box?

  Last night, I was challenged to explain (and defend) content strategy. Three sheets to the wind after a pub quiz, this is no simple task, but I hope I acquitted myself passably. I say "hope" because there was a really interesting question I couldn't answer to my own satisfaction. I wonder if any of you folks out there in the ethereal internet hive-mind can help me out? A friend - a rather concrete thinker who mathematically models complex biological systems for a living - pointed out that my examples were largely routed in business-to-business web sales and support. He challenged me with: Say you've got a political website, so your goal is to have somebody read it and vote for you - how do you measure the effectiveness of that content? Well, you would. umm. Oh dear. I guess what we're talking about here, to yank it back to my present comfort zone, is a sales process where your point of conversion is off the site. The political example is perhaps a little below the belt, since what you can and can't do, and what data you can and can't collect is so restricted. You can't throw up a "How did you hear about this election?" questionnaire in the polling booth. Exit polls don't pull in your browsing history and site session information. Not everyone fatuously tweets and geo-tags each moment of their lives. Oh, and folks lie. The business example might be easier to attack. You could have, say, a site for a farm shop that only did over the counter sales. Either way, it's tricky. I fell back on some of the work I've done usability testing and benchmarking documentation, and suggested similar, quick and dirty, small sample qualitative UX trials. I'm not wholly sure that was right. Any thoughts? How might we measure and curate for this kind of discontinuous conversion?

• Idea of an algorithm to detect a website's navigation structure?

  Currently I am in the process of developing an importer of any existing, arbitrary (static) HTML website into the upcoming release of our CMS. While the downloading the files is solved successfully, I'm pulling my hair off when it comes to detect a site structure (pages and subpages) purely from the HTML files, without the user specifying additional hints. Basically I want to get a tree like: + Root page 1 + Child page 1 + Child page 2 + Child child page1 + Child page 3 + Root page 2 + Child page 4 + Root page 3 + ... I.e. I want to be able to detect the menu structure from the links inside the pages. This has not to be 100% accurate, but at least I want to achieve more than just a flat list. I thought of looking at multiple pages to see similar areas and identify these as menu areas and parse the links there, but after all I'm not that satisfied with this idea. My question: Can you imagine any algorithm when it comes to detecting such a structure? Update 1: What I'm looking for is not a web spider, but an algorithm do create a logical tree of the relationship of the pages to be able to create pages and subpages inside my CMS when importing them. Update 2: As of Robert's suggestion I'll solve this by starting at the root page, and then simply parse links as you go and treat every link inside a page simply as a child page. Probably I'll recurse not in a deep-first manner but rather in a breadth-first manner to get a more balanced navigation structure.

  I have always used the LinkedIn toolbar for Outlook to sort out, upload and sync my contacts. Because of this I have over 2000 contacts in my contacts list that I sync with my phone, Plaxo, live, Google and others. I got a surprise the other day when my LinkedIn account was suspended and I was unable to login.   Figure: Bad, account suspended   So I contacted LinkedIn customer services to find out what the problem is, and here is the response: Dear Martin, We have recently noticed a large number of page searches and profile views through your LinkedIn account. We are aware that you may be using an automated or manual process to systematically view LinkedIn web pages. The information within LinkedIn is provided by our users for usage on the site only. In order to protect user privacy, our User Agreement prohibits using: 1. Automated or manual means to view an excessively high number of profiles or mini-profiles. 2. Automated means to run searches to collect or store data obtained from our site.
