  • rails: date type and GetDate

    - by cbrulak
This is a follow up to this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2930256/unique-responses-rails-gem I'm going to create an index based on the user id, url and a date type. I want date type (not datetime type) because I want the day, the 24 hour day to be part of the index to avoid duplication of page views counts on the same day. In other words: A view only counts once in a day by a visitor. I also want the default value of that column (viewdate) to be the function GETDATE(). This is what I have in my migration: execute "ALTER TABLEpage_viewsADD COLUMN viewdate datetime DEFAULTGETDATE()`" But the value viewdate is always empty. What am I missing? (as an aside, any other suggestions for accomplishing this goal?)

  • How to ensure that a Serialized object is completely read over a Socket ?

    - by Amitd
Hi guys, I am trying to write a socket server and Client that communicate with each other via serialized Objects.eg:To Login, Client sends server a serialized Login object and then the server deserialises the object to read login details. Similarly for other types of request/response. I just wanted to be sure if Socket.receive() can read(untill) large serialized objects completely. I have tried this code but seems to fail when a large object is serialised and sent over the internet.(seems to work fine in LAN situations.) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2134356/sending-large-serialized-objects-over-sockets-is-failing-only-when-trying-to-grow using(MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream()) { int bytesRead; while((bytesRead = m_socClient.Receive(buffer)) > 0) { ms.Write(buffer, 0, bytesRead); } // access ms.ToArray() or ms.GetBuffer() as desired, or // set Position to 0 and read } Are there any other ways to ensure that the object gets completely read.

  • LINQ-to-SQL vs stored procedures?

    - by scottmarlowe
I took a look at the "Beginner's Guide to LINQ" post here on StackOverflow (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8050/beginners-guide-to-linq), but had a follow-up question: We're about to ramp up a new project where nearly all of our database op's will be fairly simple data retrievals (there's another segment of the project which already writes the data). Most of our other projects up to this point make use of stored procedures for such things. However, I'd like to leverage LINQ-to-SQL if it makes more sense. So, the question is this: For simple data retrievals, which approach is better, LINQ-to-SQL or stored procs? Any specific pro's or con's? Thanks.

  • Accessing the Identity object in a MVC repository

    - by Rod
Hi, I have a pretty generic repository that does basic CRUD for many of my business entities. The entities enherit form a generic object that has a few fields I maintain for all objects. eg. ModifiedBy, CreatedBy, CreatedDate, ModifiedDate. These fields ModifiedBy and CreatedBy will always be set before any update/save. My questions is: Is there any way to gain access to the Identity object from my MVC web application in my repositories? I was hoping to set the modifiedby to the identity user for any update in one shot?? Best Regard, Rod

  • What is the scope of require_once in PHP?

    - by TMG
Simple question: Is the scope of require_once global? For example: <?PHP require_once('baz.php'); // do some stuff foo ($bar); function foo($bar) { require_once('baz.php'); // do different stuff } ?> When foo is called, does it re-parse baz.php? Or does it rely on the already required file from the main php file (analagous to calling require_once twice consecutively for the same include file)? I saw this thread before, but it didn't quite answer the question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1669707/should-require-once-some-file-php-appear-anywhere-but-the-top-of-the-file Thanks for your help!

  • OOP function and if statement

    - by Luke
    Not sure if I can ask two questions? If i run the following function in my database class function generateUserArray() { $u = array(); $result = $this->selectAllUsers(); while( $row=mysql_fetch_assoc($result)) { $u[] = $row['username']; } return $u; } Would i call it like this? $u[] = $datebase->generateUserArray(); My second question, will this work: else if($database->addLeagueInformation($subname, $subformat, $subgame, $subseason, $subwindow, $subadmin, $subchampion, $subtype) && $databases->addLeagueTable($name) && $_SESSION['players'] == $subplayers && $comp_name = "$format_$game_$name_$season" && $_SESSION['comp_name'] = $comp_name) Thankyou

  • How to track history of db tables that include many-to-many mapping tables?

    - by chacmool
I have seen several questions here on tracking db history, but can't seem to find one that matches our situation. We need to track the history of several tables, some of which are many-to-many linking tables. Eg say we have this schema: EntityA id name EntityB id name ABLink A_id B_id So, tracking changes to EntityA or EntityB seems pretty straightforward. We can keep a log table with the same columns plus a date stamp and user. But what about the links? How do we maintain the set of links that are valid for a given version of the data? We need to be able to recreate a history of the data showing changes in chronological order. So if a link added or deleted, we indicate that. Etc.

  • NSOpenGLView in NSSplitView

    - by Remizorrr
When i put an NSOpenglView in NSSplitView, a problem occurs while dragging splitter. The openGLView and SplitView are resizing asynchronously. i found a solution in apple mail list thread http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/samplecode/GLChildWindowDemo/Introduction/Intro.html and i found a solution with some carbon calls. but now i get link error (only in release mode). so i'v got two questions - is there any cocoa way to fix the splitter - gl problem? if no - how can i fix carbon linker errors in release mode?

  • posmax: like argmax but gives the position(s) of the element x for which f[x] is maximal

    - by dreeves
Mathematica has a built-in function ArgMax for functions over infinite domains, based on the standard mathematical definition. The analog for finite domains is a handy utility function. Given a function and a list (call it the domain of the function), return the element(s) of the list that maximize the function. Here's an example of finite argmax in action: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/471029/canonicalize-nfl-team-names/472213#472213 And here's my implementation of it (along with argmin for good measure): (* argmax[f, domain] returns the element of domain for which f of that element is maximal -- breaks ties in favor of first occurrence. *) SetAttributes[{argmax, argmin}, HoldFirst]; argmax[f_, dom_List] := Fold[If[f[#1]>=f[#2], #1, #2]&, First[dom], Rest[dom]] argmin[f_, dom_List] := argmax[-f[#]&, dom] First, is that the most efficient way to implement argmax? What if you want the list of all maximal elements instead of just the first one? Second, how about the related function posmax that, instead of returning the maximal element(s), returns the position(s) of the maximal elements?

  • Connecting to TFS from iPhone

    - by Andrei
Hi. I'm building this iPhone application to connect to a secured TFS server (one that requires authentication before letting you access its web services). When I access this server in a browser, the first thing it will do is ask me for credentials (username/password) and then connect me to the TFS server if those credentials are correct. I am using web services, as I don't think there is any other way to use TFS functionality for an outside platform...without changing stuff on the TFS host machine. So my questions are: Are there any web services that can be accessed to log into the TFS server? This authentication mechanism seems to be something common among multiple websites (I have seen it in other websites). Is there a way to replicate that authentication mechanism by sending an HTTP request? Is there a way to replicate this authentication procedure in any way? Thanks!

  • Using JS to POST a form in an iframe.

    - by Stavros Korokithakis
I would like to POST a form in an iframe, generated like so: My JS loads an iframe inside the page, adds a form to the iframe and submits the form. What I would like to happen is the iframe to load the result of that request. So, I would effectively like to post a form and render the result inside the iframe, without touching the parent (apart from putting the iframe up for display in the first place). I am using the code from this answer: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/133925/javascript-post-request-like-a-form-submit/134003#134003 but I can't get it to not reload the parent. I post the form, and instead of the iframe refreshing, the entire parent refreshes. I don't know why that is, since the url it's posting to is different and would at least redirect there. Can anyone help me with this problem? I just want a post inside an iframe and only within the iframe, basically.

  • Software Metrics in Agile Methodologies

    - by geowa4
Agile methodologies are rather prevalent these days, but I cannot seem to find much documentation on what metrics are most useful and why. I have found many more things saying that some traditional metrics like LOC and code coverage of tests are not appropriate, leaving two main questions: Why are those two (and other) metrics inappropriate? What metrics are best for Agile and why? Even with an Agile process, wouldn't you want to know how much code coverage you have with your unit tests? Or is it simply that this metric (and others) just are not as useful as other metrics like cyclomatic complexity and velocity?

  • image with json and iphone

    - by alecnash
Hi, I've got some images saved inside a db in a server and want to use them for my iphone. I created a php file so I can access them with json, got some questions though. I save all the text data from the db to a nsdictonary and it works fine. For the images should I use nsdata? Should I write a new php file for getting the image or is one enough because I am using an array to store my objects and then I use json_encode($arr) for json. Is it ok to store data to an array or is everything gonna crash?

  • jQuery autocomplete works with a local string but not when the same String is called off the server

    - by Ankur
    This is related to the question I asked at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2802948/how-to-make-an-ajax-call-immediately-on-document-loading My code is: $(document).ready(function(){ $.ajax({ type: "GET", url: "../AutoComplete", success: function(data) { var dataArray = data; alert(dataArray); $("#example").autocomplete(dataArray); } }); }); The value that is printed in the alert is: "Manuscript|Text|Information Object|Basketball|Ball|Sporting Equipment|Tarantula|Spider|Australian Spider|Cricket Player|Medieval Artefact|Person|Sportsperson|Leonardo Da Vinci|Country|Language|Inventor|Priest|Electronics Manufacturer|Object|letter|Artefact|governance model|Organism|Animal".split("|"); If instead I do this: $(document).ready(function(){ $.ajax({ type: "GET", url: "../AutoComplete", success: function(data) { var dataArray = "Manuscript|Text|Information Object|Basketball|Ball|Sporting Equipment|Tarantula|Spider|Australian Spider|Cricket Player|Medieval Artefact|Person|Sportsperson|Leonardo Da Vinci|Country|Language|Inventor|Priest|Electronics Manufacturer|Object|letter|Artefact|governance model|Organism|Animal".split("|"); alert(dataArray); $("#example").autocomplete(dataArray); } }); }); It works fine?

  • What are the typical reasons Javascript developed on Firefox fails on IE?

    - by karlthorwald
I developed some javascript enhanced pages that run fine on recent Firefox and Safari. I missed to check in Internet Explorer, and now I find the pages don't work on IE 6 and 7 (so far). The scripts are somehow not executed, the pages show as if javascript wasn't there, although some javascript is executed. I am using own libraries with dom manipulation, from YUI 2 I use YUI-Loader and the XML-Http-Request, and on one page I use "psupload", which depends on JQuery. I am installing Microsoft Script Editor from Office XP and will now debug. I will also write specific tests now. What are the typical failing points of IE? What direction I can keep my eyes open. I found this page, which shows some differences: http://www.quirksmode.org/compatibility.html Can you from your experience name some typical things I should look for first? I will also ask more questions here for specific tasks later, but for now I am interested in your experience why IE usually fails on scripts that run fine in Firefox

  • Enumerating all combinations of lists of different types

    - by jball
Given two IEnumberables of different types, what is the best practice (considering readability and maintainability) for iterating over both lists to perform an action on all possible combinations? My initial solution was to use nested foreach loops, iterating over the first IEnumerable, and then within that loop, iterating over the second IEnumerable and passing the value from the outer and the current loop into the target method. Eg.: enum ParamOne { First, Second, Etc } List<int> paramTwo = new List<int>() { 1, 2, 3 }; void LoopExample() { foreach (ParamOne alpha in Enum.GetValues(typeof(ParamOne))) { foreach (int beta in paramTwo) { DoSomething(alpha, beta); } } } I tried to restructure it with LINQ, but ended up with something that had no obvious advantages and seemed less intuitive. A search here shows lots of questions about nesting foreachs to iterate over child properties, but I couldn't find anything about iterating over two distinct lists.

  • How to find an available port?

    - by Roman
I want to start a server which listen to a port. I can specify port explicitly and it works. But I would like to find a port in an automatic way. In this respect I have two questions. In which range of port numbers should I search for? (I used ports 12345, 12346, and 12347 and it was fine). How can I find out if a given port is not occupied by another software?

  • ValidateInput Attribute Doesn't Seem To Work in ASP.NET MVC

    - by JC Grubbs
I'm trying to get around the "potentially dangerous Request.Form value" error and I'm having no luck. Yes, yes, I've read all the other StackOverflow related questions and none of them seem to get me closer to an answer. I am using [ValidateInput(false)] on all related controller actions...and I've checked many times. I'm using ValidateRequest='false' in all the related ASPX views. I am using ASP.NET MVC 2 Preview 1, but I don't think that's an issue since the error is being generated lower in the framework; Page.ProcessRequest to be exact. I can't see anything I'm doing wrong, I even set <page validateRequest='false'> in the web.config and that didn't solve it either. HELP!!!!!

  • using crypto++ on iphone sdk with pycrypto on app engine

    - by Joey
Hi, I'm trying to encrypt http requests using crypto++ and decrypt them with pycrypto on the app engine server end. Using Arc4 encryption, I can successfully encrypt and decrypt on the iphone end but when I try decrypting on app engine, the result is garbled. I thought maybe it has something to do with the encoding of the NSString but am not certain. It's not clear to me if I need to call encode() on the cipher on the server end before decrypting, although that does seem to resolve a failure to decrypt involving ascii values. I have a separate post that delves a bit into this. Can anyone offer some advice? http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2794942/crypto-pycrypto-with-google-app-engine

  • Converting MS Word Documents to PDF in ASP.NET

    - by glaxaco
Similar questions have been asked, but nothing exactly like mine, so here goes. We have a collection of Microsoft Word documents on an ASP.NET web server with merge fields whose values are filled in as a result of user form submissions. After the field merge, the server must convert the document to PDF and stream it down to the browser. Our first inclination was to use the Visual Studio Tools for Office API; however, we ran into this warning from Microsoft: Microsoft does not currently recommend, and does not support, Automation of Microsoft Office applications from any unattended, non-interactive client application or component (including ASP, ASP.NET, DCOM, and NT Services), because Office may exhibit unstable behavior and/or deadlock when Office is run in this environment. It looks like the field manipulation can be done using the Open XML SDK, but what's the best way to convert Word 2007 documents to PDF without opening Word? The optimal solution would be low-cost, scalable, have a low memory footprint, be easy to deploy, and have a .NET API.

  • Best library to parse HTML with Python 3 and example?

    - by TMC
I'm new to Python completely and am using Python 3.1 on Windows (pywin). I need to parse some HTML, to essentially extra values between specific HTML tags and am confused at my array of options, and everything I find is suited for Python 2.x. I've read raves about Beautiful Soup, HTML5Lib and lxml, but I cannot figure out how to install any of these on Windows. Questions: What HTML parser do you recommend? How do I install it? Do you have a simple example on how to use the recommended library to snag HTML from a specific URL and return the value out of say something like this: fooLink (say we want to return "/blahblah")

  • Google Maps API Key alert problem

    - by taudorf
I have a problem with my Google Maps API key. I get an alert saying "This web site needs a different Google Maps API key." When I prees OK to the alert the map are loading and working fine. The same problem is already posted: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1803327/google-maps-api-key-not-working I have tried to request the API key for both "http://www.domain.com" and "http://domain.com" but I still get the alert. When I follow the instructions from their FQA and use alert(window.location.host) I get www.domain.com but the api key generator will only accept the domain if the prefix is http:// Does anyone have a solution to this?

  • (For what) Are Fortran, Cobol and Co. used today?

    - by lamas
I'm a relatively young programmer and so I don't really know much about languages like Fortran or Cobol that have their origins in the beginning of modern informatics. I'm a bit confused because it seems like there are many people out there saying that these two languages are still very alive and being used all over the world whereas others say the opposite. In addition, it seems like there are only very few questions tagged Fortran or Cobol here on stackoverflow. Can someone "demystify" the situation for me? Who uses these senior languages these days and are they even used anymore? Do you have any experiences with one of the languages or do you know something about their latest developments?

  • gdb: SIGTRAP on std::string::c_str() call

    - by sheepsimulator
So I've been trying to use gdb to return the value of a string I have by calling > print <member variable name>.c_str() But everytime I do so, I get this: Program received signal SIGTRAP, Trace/breakpoint trap. <some address> in std::string::c_str() from /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 GDB remains in the frame where the signal was received. To change this behavior use "set unwindonsignal on" Evaluation of the expression containing the function (std::string::c_str() const) will be abandoned. Two questions: Why/how is the standard library throwing SIGTRAP? I checked basic_string.h and c_str() is defined as: const _CharT* c_str() const { return _M_data(); } I don't see any SIGTRAP-throwing here... is there a way to get around this SIGTRAP? How can I read the text value of the std::string out (without getting some crazy extension library) in gdb?
