  • Microsoft Windows 64-bit application development best practises installation folder.

    My problem is that a vendor is providing me with a 64bit application (packed in a 64bit installer) but it goes and installs to the x86 (Program Files) Folder and he keeps telling me its OK but I want it to install in the Program Files directory; as the 32 bit version does that and scripts for the app are developed based on this assumption. Can someone direct me to the Microsoft recommended best practices for 64bit applications(links). Thanks in advance.

  • Problem installing from Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32bit cd

    Older laptop currently running xp, only 128mb ram too. Is 128 just too small? But, 20+ gigs free hard drive and it's been defragmented. When I try to install Ubuntu from a CD I get the screen that says ubuntu and has the four red dots and then eventually goes blank and I just hear hard drive noises. Stays this way indefinitely (shut it off after half a day). Burned another cd, at slow writing speed too, and dl is from Ubuntu and get same result. Any help much appreciated!

  • Wubi downloaded and installed 64bit 12.10 on my 32bit netbook

    I downloaded the Wubi installer on my atom N450 netbook. When I started up Ubuntu I got an error that read failed to change the mode of /ect/passwd- to 0600. Then while it booted it froze and several strange characters filled the screen. Finally it loaded it ran pretty slow, and I could connect to my router, but not to the internet. Ping 8.8.8.8 showed no server found. So I checked the about computer and it said I was running the 64 bit installation. Now I know that my computer has a low power 32 bit chip and even the Ubuntu iso download suggested a 32 bit installation. So I went to double check and see if I just missed the option for a 32 bit Wubi install and I did not. There was no option. Is there any way to download a 32 bit version of 12.10 through the Wubi?

    Everything seemed to install fine. I can start google earth and all layers are available, I can even zoom in and look at 3-D buildings. But there is absolutely no image data displayed at all. If you look at the whole globe the outlines are there on an invisible globe. As you zoom in the base looks dark grey almost black but there is no image. I have tried. Tools Options Graphics Safe Mode Tools Options Texture colors all combinations Tools Options Cache (tried several changes to the numbers) lspci shows Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03) Running on a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop (1.5Gb memory)

    I have installed Ubuntu 64-bit alongside windows 7 32-bit. (Windows installed first.) The installation was successful, but when I restart it just goes directly to windows 7 without any sign of existence of Ubuntu. I'm a beginner who just wanted to get familiar with Ubuntu, but now I'm disappointed with it. Someone told me the not booting problem is related to EFI, but now I'm scared to play with this boot stuff because my information might be totally lost. How can I fix this boot problem and get to Ubuntu?

    Can't google out the solution through some time so I'm asking here. I have installed Linux Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in virtual box hosted by Windows 7 64bit Simple my 3D stopped working after some kernel headers update<<< few months ago. Just like that. I don't member which version was it. In meantime there was 2 or 3 new releases of VirtualBox which I have installed. Every time I am updating VirtualBox Guest Additions to the newest version.     I have tried posting on the forums, but I really need help (I'm a server admin and really don't want to have to switch to Windows just to run Minecraft). Anyhow, I originally was running openjdk6 as I was told that 7 was unstable and was getting periodical lag spikes while walking (at least once every 3 seconds the screen would freeze for a tenth of a second). After that, I attempted to install Sun's Java JDK7 (I couldn't get ahold of 6 without signing up for Oracle's newsletters).   • Windows 7 64bit will not register a 32bit DLL

    I'm trying to install a 32bit Oracle instant client onto several Windows 7 PCs. This version is the one required by the customer's software. I have successfully installed it on about a dozen PCs using the same installer, but two machines refuse to register a DLL. The two PCs are of different make and model. I have been able to install this software in the past on these models. This is the error that the installer throws up: The file copies to the location referenced above. If I choose to ignore the error and manually register it later, I get the following error: This error is returned whether I use the 32bit (syswow64) or 64bit version of regsvr32. Command Prompt is run as admin, and the ID with which I'm logged into the PC is an admin. I've tried copying the file into the syswow64 folder, but I get the same error. This same installer works on other PCs. To further complicate the issue, one of the two PCs also will not register an OCX file from a different 32bit installer: Both PCs are relatively new and have standard software installed. We use MS Forefront for security, but disabling that didn't change the behavior. What am I missing?

    Which OS (or distributions) comes with 64-bit kernels (x86_64, SPARC64, PPC64, ..smth else?..) and 32-bit userland? I want all small userspace programs (like ls, cat, etc) to be 32-bit, because they really no needs to be 64-bit. But OS kernel must be 64bit for using =3 Gb of RAM. Also database programs (when using a lot of memory) can be 64bit. 64bit mode can hurt some programs, makes them bigger, eating (wasting) memory on pointers (especially in big abstract datatypes like list, tree, etc). 64 bit programss WASTES twice memory on EACH Pointer. I don't want it. And the Question is not "Are the 32-bit programs needed when 64-bit porcessor is available". Question is "What OS comes with 32 bit userspace and kernels in 32/64 bit mode". Examples of such OS includes: Solaris/SPARC64, MACOSX/X86_64 (10.5)/....

    I have been trying, with no success, to install a IBM DB2 ODBC driver so that my PHP server can connect to a database. I've tried installing the db2_connect and get all sorts of problems, I tried install I Access for Linux and the RPM did not install right nor did using alien breed any useful results. I've also tried the DB2 Runtime v8.1, no success. If I attempt to run the rpm it claims I need dependencies that I can't find in apt-get. Yum is also not very helpful as it appears I don't have any repositories installed or lists... I'm not using the DB2 Express C thing, even if I did try it to get the db2 php functions to work. And I don't have zend but I think I have every other package on the ubuntu repositories. The problem is that it returns "Win32NT" even when running on Windows Vista 64bit. Is there any other method to know the correct platform (32 or 64bit)? Note that it should also detect 64bit when run as 32bit app on Windows 64bit.

Given this, and the fact that my laptop runs a 32-bit version of the EFI and thus also a 32-bit kernel, how does the arch mixing work in general? Darwin Kernel Version 11.3.0: Thu Jan 12 18:48:32 PST 2012; root:xnu-1699.24.23~1/RELEASE_I386 Normally one would run 32b binaries on x86_64, but the other way around would require pushing the cpu into 64b mode, which AFAIK cannot be undone.     An application called DBGL (DosBox Game Launcher) requires JRE in order to run successfully. I had it installed and running on my old Windows 7 32Bit machine without any problems. Today I got my new PC with Windows 64Bit and I cannot get it running anymore. If I install the latest JRE 32Bit version to the \Program Files (x86) folder DBGL says it needs the latest JRE version in order to run and doesn't start. If I install the latest JRE 64Bit version to the \Program Files folder I do not get an error message anymore but the application doesn't start either. Clicking it has literally no effect. Right now I have both JRE versions running parallely and I get the same result I have when only the 64Bit version is installed. Thanks in advance!

I am confused. How to accurately get if the OS Kernel is in 64/32 bit mode on Solaris and on Linux?

As by specs 32bit domUs should work with 64bit dom0. DomUs are paravirtualized, and everything works, except iptables limit. Since It's was real pain to me to run Java Browser plugin, Flash Plugin, J2ME Toolkit, and many other tools. But It was 90% OK with me. This was Ubuntu 8.10 (a year ago), And now the Ubuntu 9.10 came and I'm thinking about installing the 32 bit on it and get rid of the pain. Is there a downside for that?? considering that the display card is not supported now so exclude this from your calculation, I will never play REAL games on it and I'm not a big fan of Compiz effects. I'm not here to ask about the performance (which is about 15%+ for the 64bit only), I just want compatibility!

  • Running Java 32bit and 64bit on same computer

    I ran into a rather puzzling problem, trying to install Vuze 4.2.0.2 on my Windows 7. I have a Java 6 JDK 64bit, but Vuze complains that it can't find a correct 32bit JRE. Yet, as far as I know it shouldn't matter which Java is installed on the computer. (See also these answers). Now I was wondering : if it makes sense running a 32bit and a 64bit Java on the same machine, Whether that is possible, and if so what I should pay attention to in order to make sure that the correct Java is found. Thank you in advance PS : I have my reasons no to use the latest Vuze, so please don't tell me to update Vuze. I know.

  • 32bit ODBC Postgres driver on Windows 2008 R2 x64

    I'm trying to install the Postgres ODBC 32bit driver on a Windows 2008 R2 64bit machine. After installing it, with no errors, I go to the ODBC panel, the 32bit version under the /syswow64 folder and try to add the driver, select the Postgres driver from the list but I get an error 126, saying he can't find the driver at the specified path. The problem is that the path he shows me, is the exact path the driver is in, I double checked on the registery (on the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\ODBC\ODBCINST.INI\ location) and it's fine there too. A couple more people on technet have the same issue too. Did anyone ever run into this? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. edit: the driver works fine on my win7 x64 test machine, this behaviour only happens on the server.

    I have an SDK that must install 32-bit and 64-bit files in the correct places under /usr/lib for a variety of Linux distributions. For example, it appears that for Fedora, /usr/lib64 is the 64bit lib, but for Debian based systems, /usr/lib is the 64bit directory. I want to find out if there is a reliable way to determine the correct locations. More specifically, is there a way an install script can determine programmatically which are the correct equivalents for /usr/lib for 32- and 64-bit libraries on a given distribution?
