  • Linux distro for notebooks

    What might be the most compatible linux distro for notebooks. Mine is an compaq b1200. With windows 7 installed and I want to dual boot it with a linux distro. I already tried ubuntu 10.04 notebook edition but no luck because the graphics is so slow. When you try to point on an option it takes about 30 seconds for it to respond. Please recommend a distro that is most likely compatible with most notebooks.

    I'm looking to setup a quick and dirty network boot server to install xp on a beatup laptop that has a bad cdrom but the option to "network boot" (compaq pasario 700) 1) what is the diffrence between pxe and Ris 2) which one is most likely to be the one used on the laptop mentioned above 3) is there a windows program to run a boot server 4) what files will i need to have can i jut use the cd or do i need to rip it to files or and iso? thanks Rob

  • Freezing a dead(ish) laptop battery...

    I have a Compaq CQ50-215CA laptop with a battery that does not properly hold charge. Vista's battery meter does not read the remaining charge left; the laptop will randomly shut down at ~60% and sometimes the meter goes back up to 100% before shutting down without warning. So, does freezing a dead-ish laptop battery somehow repair it and allow it to hold charge again?

  • Mouse and touchpad move at different speeds

    I have a compaq 610 running windows 7, and I use a USB mouse on it. The pointer speed is different for the mouse and the touchpad, so when I go to a meeting and take the notebook but not the mouse, the pointer moves too slow using the touchpad and I have to manually adjust it (of course when I return, I have to slow it down because the mouse would move the pointer too fast). Is there any way to fix this, or to have this setting separate for both devices?

    I have a Compaq CQ50-215CA laptop and after a year and 5 months, the screen is completely distorted now. I plan on removing the screen soon, but I realize that the BIOS screen, OS select and Vista boot sequence are all displayed on the laptop screen rather than the external display. Is there some way to get the laptop to display everything (From boot-up to shutdown) on an external display (VGA port)?

  • How to stop computer waking up from sleep when LAN connected.

    I have a Compaq desktop machine that wakes up from sleep only when the LAN cable is connected to it. The WOL feature is DISABLED in the BIOS, so why does it keep waking up? And why is it getting told to wake up? I was under the impression that an application or service has to specifically send a message to the machine in order to wake it up but I am not aware of any software on my network that would do this.

    Laptop: HP Compaq 6710b I can boot from usb just fine with the following usb flash drives: Cruzer micro 4GB HP 4GB The flash drive that will not boot: Flash Voyager 8GB To knock out variables I did the following: Using Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool I performed a low level format Full erase with Flash Memory Tookit In windows 7 I formated the drive to fat32 Used USB-Boot-Tester to write to the drive Also used uNetbooting with various distros to see if that would make a difference My guesses on what could be preventing the drive from booting: The laptop does not support booting to usb flash drives larger than 4GB The drive is defective in some way

  • Can't start computer, it only boots into BIOS update

    My son has a Compaq Presario computer running on Windows 7 and he has brought it down to me cause it's 'not working'. When I start up the computer I get a HP BIOS update that fails and keeps restarting with the same screens, only to fail every time. I have read some forum posts that suggest taking it back to default settings – how do I do this when I cant get anything on the computer screen except for the update? I'm a complete novice with computers.

Now I also have this wireless mouse (Logitech M215), which also has a teeny-weeny dongle.     I have a new Toshiba Satellite L645-S4059. This is an Intel i3 64 bit machine. Two problems have occurred that I would like to fix before transferring my work from my old compaq laptop. First I can't get the wireless driver to work properly. I went to the realtek driver site and couldn't find the 8176. Instead I was shuttled to the 8188 which uses a 8192 software release. I am not sure if the kernel is just missing the name. Second I have a synaptics V7.2 touchpad which is just flaky. It eventually freezes up so I am just using a USB mouse. Appreciate anybody's experience on this.

I am using a: 2009 Compaq Presario CQ40-415AU Notebook AMD Athlon X2 Dual core Processor 2.1 GHz 1024 MB L2 cache 3GB DDR2 RAM ATI Radeon + HD 3200 Graphics 256 MB, screen is 14 inch widescreen with resolution of 1280*800. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32bit on my laptop. It works brilliantly until I installed graphics driver. When I installed the driver, the graphics became slow. Everything slowed down. Even the splash screen resolution changed to something like 640*480. I have liked Ubuntu since 9.10 and for the freedom it provides and its versatility, but graphics problem remains the same. I even installed Ubuntu on a 50 GB partition with 6 GB swap partition. My HDD is 320 GB. Please tell me what is wrong.

  • Out Of disk, but still boots

    I have a HP Compaq nx6310 notebook wth 4gb memory & a new 250gb hdd. After installing Ubuntu 12.04, i got an "out of disk" error & was unable to boot. I rebooted in live, instaled & ran Boot Repair then rebooted. Grub menu loaded fine, followed by "out of disk.....press any key to continue". I pressed a key & Ubuntu booted, a bit slow but still booted.   • Installation taking a very long time

    I am installing Ubuntu 14.04(32-bit) on my laptop (Compaq Presario V2000), and after about 7 hours, it is still in Congiguring bcmwl-kernel-source (i386) mode. The messages I read are as follows: ubuntu kernel: [22814.858163] ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.LPC0.LPC0.ACAD: ACPI_NOTIFY_BUS_CHECK event: unsupported with the numbers in the square brackets increasing. I have had Windows XP professional on this laptop, and I am erasing it. I am not sure if I should turn off the laptop, and start all over again. About 4 years ago I installed Ubuntu on this laptop, and that was very fast. The only problem I encountered was my wireless, and could not make it to work, and switched back to Windows. I appreciate any comments regarding this installation taking such a long time.

    Good morning, I'm very new to Ubuntu. I decided to change to Ububtu (12.10) for my old laptop (Compaq Presario R3000 with AMD Athlon XP 2800+) that previously used Windows XP. After the installation, the PC restarted but, after a certain activity of the HDD stopped. Menwhile, no information from the screen (blank). Then I retried in recovery mode and the activity stopped at a certain point. I write the last two lines: [ 11.020922] pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: cs: IO port probe 0x3000-0x7fff: [ 11.021676] excluding 0x3000-0x30ff 0x3400-0x34ff 0x3800-0x38ff 0x3c00-0x3cff I don't know how to solve the problem.   • Packard Bell Easynote NJ65 not saving gamma Setup.

    Hi. There seems to be a issue with the Easynote range of PB laptops. Since Ubuntu 10.10 does not use a Xorg.conf file to save your gamma / resolution /brightness setting, everytime I turn on my laptop I have to open up a terminal window and use the x-gamma command to set it up to my personal preference. Is there a way to create a configuration file which can save that into the system everytime I load up the OS? When I used to have a Compaq Presario (an F564LA with integrated nVIDIA graphics), I could save a config. file into the system which loaded up everything on startup To those who don't know the spec's for a NJ65 laptop, I'll provide them Processor: Intel® Pentium Dual Core @ 2.2 GHZ Video: Integrated Intel® GMA 4500MHD graphics HDD: 320GB SATA RAM: 2GB DDR2

  • How do I make Powertop changes permanent?

    I'm on a Compaq 615 and it's fan is loud as hell. Not much you can do about that but I'm trying to keep the CPU/GPU as cool as possible. This is what Powertop has to say: If I change all of them to "good", the changes don't survive a reboot.   • How do I get my ART USB Dual Pre preamp to work?

    I am using Audacity. I have an ART USB Dual Pre preamp. Ubuntu is not recognizing it whatsoever. I am able to record in Audacity, but it is using the mic that is built into my computer (which is a compaq Presario CQ50) instead of the one plugged into the preamp. How do I get Ubuntu to recognize the preamp that is plugged into my computer? Something tells me it has to do with the installation of the preamp software. It came with a installation CD, but when I go to "install", the nothing happens. I can view what is on the CD, but there is no installing of anything. Please help!

  • Can't enable Bluetooth 13.10

    I'm a new user to Ubuntu. I previously installed Xubuntu 13.04 on my Compaq nx8420 and was able to use Bluetooth with no issues. I recently performed a clean install of Ubuntu 13.10 (not Xubuntu), and now can't enable bluetooth. I go to the default Bluetooth app, move the slider to 'On' and it slides straight back to 'Off'. Do I need to install any extra packages or use an alternative app to get Bluetooth working? I can't think of a reason why it would work in Xubuntu 13.04, but not Ubuntu 13.10.
