• Thoughts on Development using Virtual Machines

  I'll be working as a development lead for a startup and I've suggested that we use VMs for development. I'm not talking about each developer having a desktop with VMs for testing/development, I mean having a server rack where all VMs are managed and have the developers work from a microPC (ChromeOS anyone?) locally, or even remotely from their home computer. To me, the benefits are the fact that it's extremely scalable, cheaper in the long run, easier to manage and that we utilize the hardware its maximum potential. As for cons, I can't think of any particular showstoppers other than we'll need someone to setup/maintain said setup. I was hoping that some of you might of had a similar setup at your place of employment and be able to weight in with your opinions. Thanks.

• What's better than outputdebugstring for windows debugging?

  So, before I came to my current place of employment, the windows OutputDebugString function was completely unheard of, everyone was adding debug messages to string lists and saving them to file or doing showmessage popups (not very useful for debugging drawing issues). Now everybody (all 6 of us) is like "What can I say about this OutputDebugString?" and I'm like, "with much power comes much responsibility." I kind of feel as though I've passed a silent but deadly code smell to my colleagues. Ideally we wouldn't have bugs to debug right? Ideally we'd have over 0% code coverage, eh? So as far as petty debugging is concerned (not complete rewriting of a 3 million line Delphi behemoth) what's a better way to use debug running code than just adding OutputDebugString all over?

  I just started working a year ago, and I want to join an open source project for the same reasons as anyone else: help create something useful and develop my skills further. My problem is, I don't know how to find a project where I'll fit in. How can I find a beginner-friendly project? What attributes should I be searching for? What are warning signs that a project might not be the right fit? Are there any tools out there to help match people with open source projects? • How do I start working as a programmer - what do I need?

  i am currently learning Java and PHP as I have some projects from university, which require me to apply both languages. Specifically, a Java GUI application, connecting to a MySQL database and a web application that will be implemented in PHP/MySQL. I have started learning the MVC pattern, Struts, Spring and I am also learning PHP with zend. My first question is: How can I find employment as a programmer/software engineer? The reason I ask is because I have sent my CV into many companys, but all of them stated that I required work experience. I really need some guidance on how to improve my career opportunites. At present, I work on my own and haven't worked in collaboration with anyone on a particular project. I'm assuming most people create projects and submit them along with their CVs. My second question is: Everyone has to make a start from somewhere, but what if this somewhere doesn't come? What do I need to do to create the circumstances where I can easily progress forward? • Good Intro to Computer Science Book for FE Developer [on hold]

  I am a JavaScript developer/architect who, like many developers these days, did not come from a Computer Science background (I studied Philosophy at a liberal arts college), but instead learned development by actually building applications, and by reading books explaining language grammars, design patterns, and best practices. I have never felt that my ignorance of CS concepts has hurt my ability to build great apps or find employment. Recently, however, I have felt the itch to grow in this direction. Do you have any suggestions for some good introductory CS resources/books? I know that Computer Science is a huge field and my question is very general, but I am looking for a 101-type survey of the high-level concepts, from which I can branch off into more specific areas of study. • Does attending the upcoming Devdays 2011 have some value for a resume?

  This fall I'm 99% going to London to attend the awesome Devdays 2011; I have many reasons to go there and some of them are: Professional stuff Great people Awesome topics Unicorns Passion London :) Obviously all the cool technologies that will be discussed are light years far from my daily work but useful for my side projects and maybe for some future employment. Now, to get to the point; a coworker said to me that he won't come with me because Devday London is expensive, and something expensive should reward you with a certificate, a certificate that could have some value to the eyes on an employer.   I am familiar with the C++ programming language, and I have been using it for some time now. Recently, I have been applying for C++ Software Development/Engineering jobs, but I feel like there is still so much I need to learn. When first-class companies, such as Google, hire a software programmer, they obviously put them through some initial training. How/Where can I find a similar source of training material/source that would prepare me for commercial/industrial programming in C++? I know there is millions of good tutorials on line, but I would rather work through something different. I actually don't know how an organization training courses in software development would be different to text books. Has anyone been in the same boat - feeling under-confident at the employment stage and then realizing they shouldn't have been?

You reach a point near the end, where you're starting to speak about terms of employment, salary, etc.., and you're trying to show off the environment he'll be working in. When you mention that programmers at your company have systems with two monitors, the interviewee stops you and informs you that he won't need a computer. He only ever writes code by hand, in a note-book, and relies on his phone for sending/receiving email. This is not something he's willing to budge on. Would you still hire him? • Best skill set for a max. income entry level job? [closed]

  I am interested in getting a bit more experience with programming before I get a job. What languages/skills are currently seeing the highest rates of employment? Are web-developers typically better-paid than desktop software programmers? Do web-developers require a wider skill set? I often see a number of different languages being listed as necessary on web development job applications. Will most potential employers except me to be very familiar with command line Linux? (I'm a Windows guy myself, but I've used Linux in the past). I realize that specialists in dying languages like COBOL or FORTRAN can make a lot of money too, but I am not interested in stuff like that.

• How to get some experience in a new programming language? [closed]

  I have commercial experience in one programming language but I want to make a switch to another programming language (C#/.NET). I am in full-time employment so whenever I get free time I read relevant books or use online resources available. My questions are - How do I develop experience in the new language of interest (without leaving current job)? The best way I find to learn is to develop a project - How do you / Where can you find new test projects which you can refer to in the interview (these don't have to be real projects but perhaps I can take the code with me in a usb stick as proof). Do you have any tips/advice for me regarding best way to switch career? My lanugauge of choice is C# - so c# related answers will be appreciated.

• How strict are standard employer IP agreements about coding outside of work?

  I'm in negotiations for a position with a large corporation and I'm reading their employment terms. In their IP/copyright section they state that anything that I do outside of work that is "similar" to what I perform on the job is also theirs. I understand that it's intentionally very vague to protect them, but I'm also a little nervous that it could be abused. The way I read it, anything I produce outside of work could be claimed as well, because it would fall under "programming". Is this relatively standard? Could I negotiate more specific terms (I have asked if I could get clarification)? Should I be worried that they could abuse this? I just don't want to be caught in a situation where come up with a (potentially) great idea outside of work and they swoop down and lay claim to it.

• Working environment

  I realise that this might not be the right place to ask questions about employment and that the question my raise debate etc. The company I work for recently decided that rather than having one web developer working on sites from a branch it would be better to make that person come into head office and work in the middle of a busy call centre. Also they're expecting the developer to answer the phone if it rings and take messages. Does anyone find that strange? Is it really the right place for a programmer to work? Thanks for the advice

  My java module gets a huge input xml from a mainframe. Unfortunately, the mainframe is unable to skip optional elements when it is not a leaf node, with the result that I get a LOT of empty tags in my input : So, <pre><code><SSN>111111111</SSN> <Employment> <Current> <Address> <line1/> <line2/> <line3/> <city/> <state/> <country/> </Address> <Phone> <phonenumber/> <countryCode/> </Phone> </Current> <Previous> <Address> <line1/> <line2/> <line3/> <city/> <state/> <country/> </Address> <Phone> <phonenumber/> <countryCode/> </Phone> </Previous> </Employment> <MaritalStatus>Single</MaritalStatus> </code></pre> should be <SSN>111111111</SSN> <MaritalStatus>Single</MaritalStatus> I use jaxb to unmarshall the input xml string that the mainframe sends it. Is there a clean/ easy way to remove all the empty group tags, or do I have to do this manuall in the code for each element. I have over 35 elements in my input xml, so I would love to it if jaxb itself had a way of doing this automatically? Thanks, SGB

• How can I access an Apple Xserve with no I/O ports

  I have an Apple Xserve at my place of employment, that I stumbled across one day going through some old equipment. The Xserve has one card installed on it, being the NIC, and is labelled with the static IP adresses that it has assigned, but other than that it is totally 'headless'. I would like to put it to use ( by either rolling it over to a Linux, or Windows Server 08 environment... 0_o ) but have yet to figure out how to get into the system to manage it. • What are the minimum required modules to run WordPress

  Recently a 'consultant' came in to talk to bean counters at my place of employment, with regards to being more efficient with our IT infrastructure. They suggested to be more efficient we should only load the Apache modules that are required on our web servers. (This is just 1 of 1Ks of suggestions). The Bean Counters are very excited, and prepared for me to spend the time to investigate this avenue of cost cutting. I don't mind this mundane exercise, I see it as a learning experience! • How do I scale EC2 and push out code / data to my instances?

  Unfortunately I only have a limited knowledge of server architecture, I come from a development background. I am looking to ensure my new app can scale properly using EC2. I currently have a T1.micro for development running Windows with SQL server 2008. The system allows students to come to our site to search for a mentor, update their profile with pictures and employment history etc. Roughly the same sort of work as a LinkedIn profile. I need this to be able to scale very quickly without wasted resources. I understand the following is important. Separation of data, application etc. I will achieve this I think by hosting images using S3, Database instance via RDS and upgrade the EC2 instance. My main question is: How do I push data / code out to multiple ec2 / RDS instances seamlessly?

• MS Word Mac unable to use form in document

  I have a Word document given to me by a client. It is an employment application with form fields that the client wants to be downloadable from her web site. I'm opening it in Word 2008 for Mac (12.2.4). When I try to fill out the form, Word will not allow me to fill out the fields, it just treats them as objects that can be replaced or moved. It also will not allow me to turn off Track Changes, and it will not allow me to change the locked status of the form (the buttons are grayed out). Any idea what's going on here?

• Project Manager that wants to lock in time estimate with a signed contract

  At a previous employment, a project manager (PM) wasn't satisfied with the delivery time of the code on a project I was on. I was told by my project lead that that the PM was considering having me sign a contract to lock-in my time estimates I gave for tasks and delivery dates. The situation on the project was that we were working with new technologies, codebase, coding standards, and very prone-to-change requirements. I was learning new things and applying them the best I could on requirements that kept on changing. The requirements throughout the iterations grew by 2-3 times, with my estimate-to-complete growing by roughly 5-8 times. The only things that didn't change were the estimates and delivery dates. Yes, I did end up missing most deadlines. And I was working on some very new technologies that no one else on the entire development team could really help out on because they wouldn't be familiar with it. At least not easily. It seemed to me then, that the PM wanted his numbers to add up-- and thus wanted me to sign a contract to "ensure" that I would always deliver working code on time. I suppose with a signed contract the PM could use it against me if I couldn't deliver on time. I believe what happened next was that other project managers and/or project leads defended me, and didn't let this happen. My question is, should this raise a red flag about the manager? Is it common practice for a manager to lock-in time estimates of a software developer with a signed contract? Or in this case, try to. Please note, I was a full time employee, not an independent consultant. Update: I want to add that I did give new estimates weekly, but it seems the original estimates and delivery dates were what the PM was fixated on.

• If not gamedev, what do I do !

  Hi, I am a game dev who was working in the game-industry and then..got laid off. Ever since then, life couldn't get less stressful! During this time, I have met so many other devs who have also been laid off irrespective of the number of years they have been in the game. Now, the problem really gets worse, since I am not a US citizen (yes, I am in US) , and am on an international visa here, I might have to soon pack my bags and go back to my native country. Going back is not bad at all, apart from the fact, that gamedev is still in a very nascent stage there. There just aren't many opportunities. So, employment is the key to maintain a valid visa status. After giving it a lot of thought, I am thinking of staying away from gamedev jobs for the time being, given its job unstablity. This brings me to my current problem. I can't think of a domain/place where I can use my game development skills. I know graphics/simulation/visualization is huge, but I can't think straight and am left clueless where to go from here. What are some of the domains/companies where I can use my skills ? I'd appreciate any insight on this (and I apologize if this is not the place to post this kind of a question).

• Is it more valuable to double major in Computer Science/Software Engineering or get an undergraduate CS degree with a Masters in SE?

  A friend and I (both in college) are currently in a debate over which is better, in terms of employment opportunities, experience, and education: a Bachelors degree in both Computer Science and Software Engineering, or a Bachelors in Computer Science with a Masters in Software Engineering. My point of view is that I would rather go to school for 4-4.5 years to learn both sides of the field, and be out working on real projects gaining real experience, by going the double major route. His point of view is that it would look better to potential employers if he had a Bachelors in CS and Masters in SE. That way, when he's finally done after 4 years of CS and 2-4 of SE (depending on where he goes), he can pretty much have his choosing of what he wants to do. We are both in agreement on the distinction between the two degrees: CS is "traditional" and about the theory of algorithms, data structures, and programming, where SE is the study of the design of software and the implementation of CS theory. So, what's your stance on this debate? Have you gone one route or another? And most importantly, why?
