• Accessing network shares on Windows7 via SonicWall VPN client

  I'm running Windows7 x64 (fully patched) and the SonicWall 4.2.6.0305 client (64-bit, claims to support Windows7). I can login to the VPN and access network resources (eg SSH to a machine that lives behind the VPN). However I cannot seem to be able to access shared filesystems. Windows is refusing to do discovery on the VPN network. I suspect part of the problem is Windows persistently considers the VPN connection to be a 'public network'. Normally, you can open the network and sharing center and modify this setting, however it does not give me a choice for the VPN. So I did the expedient thing and turned on file sharing for public networks. I also disabled the Windows firewall for good measure. Still no luck. I can access the server directly by putting \\192.168.1.240 in the taskbar, which brings up the list of shares on the server. However, trying to open any of the shares simply tells me "Windows cannot access \\192.168.1.240\share You do not have permission to access ..."; it never asks for a domain password. I also tried Windows7 native VPN functionality - it couldn't successfully connect to the VPN at all. I suspect this is because SonicWall is using some obnoxious special/undocumented authentication system; I had similar problems trying to connect on Linux with the normal IPsec tools there. What magical invocation or control panel option am I missing that will let this work? Are there any reasonable debugging strategies? I'm feeling quite frustrated at Windows tendency to not give me much useful information that might let me understand what it is trying to do and what is going wrong.

• How can I quickly zoom in on the Mac OS X version of Word without having to use the menu?

  (I'm using the Mac version MS Word 2011) I used to happily use the wheel mouse to zoom but, after upgrading to the Mac Magic mouse (using only finger slide movement to scroll and pan) I can no longer hold Ctrl and roll the mouse to zoom (driving me crazy) and I can't see a useful keyboard shortcut and the zoom slider bar in the lower right of the Word screen isn't practical (in my experience). Is there any way to zoom in on the Mac Version of Microsoft Word 2011 without resorting to using a menu?

The number of columns is between 1 & 6, so I cant limit it that way. I was able to get a script that allows me to put each individual on one row. However, I am having a hard time getting the first column to copy over to each row. • Macbook Pro Triple Boot OS X Lion, Windows 7 and Windows 8

  MacBook Pro (Summer 2010 Model, Basic Model) I currently have OS X Lion and Windows 7 running side by side on my MacBook Pro. However I have a need to get Windows 8 running as well in this mix (a Virtual Machine is not good enough, I need the performance). I have created a suitably sized parition (80GB) that is recognizable in Boot Camp. However every time I try to boot from the USB stick (that worked to install Windows 8 on my PC) using the latest version of rEFIt, it just boots Windows 7 and not the Windows 8 installer. I cannot start the installation within Windows 7 as it will just install over Windows 7. I'm guessing the Boot Camp emulation is doing something werid to stop the "Press any key to install Windows..." message from appearing (which should happen if the installer detects Windows is already installed (e.g. if you left your install disk in). Is there a way to get around this / force the installer to start? (Note I cannot start the Windows 7 installer either if I wanted to install a second copy of Windows 7 to upgrade to Windows 8)

• PHP - post data ends when '&' is in data.

  Hi all, im posting data using jquery/ajax and PHP at the backend. Problem being, when I input something like 'Jack & Jill went up the hill' im only recieving 'Jack' when it gets to the backend. I have thrown an error at the frontend before that data is sent which alerts 'Jack & Jill went up the hill'. When I put die(print_r($_POST)); at the very top of my index page im only getting [key] => Jack how can I be loosing the data? I thought It may have been my filter; <?php function filter( $data ) { $data = trim( htmlentities( strip_tags( mb_convert_encoding( $data, 'HTML-ENTITIES', "UTF-8") ) ) ); if ( get_magic_quotes_gpc() ) { $data = stripslashes( $data ); } //$data = mysql_real_escape_string( $data ); return $data; } echo "<xmp>" . filter("you & me") . • Virtual box lost files

  I have been running Virtual Box on a Macbook Pro for a year or more, with an old version of Windows XP running on the virtual machine. Recently my Mac battery dies completely and I had left VB / Windows running. When I re-started the Mac, VB would not load. I reinstalled a recent download of VB from a DMG file I had stored. Now VB starts but when I try to start the virtual machine I get the following message, Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows XP. Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_WRITE_NON_SYS_GROUP). Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} I have been backing up the MAC using Time Machine and have backups going back months. I really need to access the windows files as they have my Accounts and other business critical stuff. Any ideas please, or does anyone know where I can get some support for this combination of hardware / software, apologies I am a novice in this area. Thanks in advance.

• Troubleshoot dropped wireless connections

  I was recently hired in the IT department of a small company (~180 users) and one of the issues that people have been complaining about is having their wi-fi connections drop during meetings. The company is using an HP ProCurve Wireless LAN with 10 APs and a controller unit located in the server room. I don't have any experience troubleshooting WLAN in a multi-AP environment, so I'm trying to at least gather information using free or cheap tools. I did a basic site survey using the free version of Ekahau HeatMapper and discovered the following in one of the conference rooms that has been a problem. The program picked up three access points (plus a bunch of others with much lower signals that were out of range): AP 1: SSID: "Unknown SSID" - Signal strength: -48 dBm - -40 dBm. Channel: 2 AP 2: SSID "CompanyMain" - Signal strength: -35 dBm or greater. Channel: 2. Security: WEP (This is the main SSID for the company's WLAN.) AP 3: SSID: "CompanyGuest" - Signal strength: -40 dBm - -35 dBm. Channel: 2. Security: WPA2 (This SSID is the company's "guest" WLAN, which was setup to allow Internet access, but prevent network access.) Is there anything that you see that is clearly a problem from the above? I'm assuming that the unknown SSID might be a big problem, and that it is an AP from a neighboring office that is causing interference. Does that seem likely? Also, regarding channel, should we try changing the channels of our APs to avoid interference with that unknown SSID? (Since everything seems to be on Channel 2?) Should our APs be on different channels? In other words, should the CompanyMain and CompanyGuest APs be on different channels? Finally, any recommendations for free/cheap tools to help me figure this out, and/or a good methodology to follow? Thanks in advance for any help. Jack

• Home server - HP Proliant Microserver - Software and setup - OS on USB stick?

  I've just purchased a HP ProLiant Microserver for home use. I want to set up with web server, samba shares, the usual stuff. My question is really about system setup. It has an internal USB socket so I've attempted to install a copy of Fedora 14 onto it. I turned off X/Gnome, but it still ran like a pig. I've now put the OS on one of the internal disks (250Gb, 7200rpm), but I was wondering if there was a way to utilise the internal USB to give me better power-saving allowing the hard drives to be shut down when not in use. How would you set this server up? I'd rather not go to the extra cost of an SSD right now, but if that's the best way then so be it.

• How to access Windows Server 2008 R2 file shares from a different subnet

  We have a couple of severs that used to be Windows Server 2003 that we recently upgraded to Windows Server 2008 R2. A couple of details to set the situation up: We wiped the OS and re-installed. These servers are on one subnet (172.16.x.x) and we are trying to access some file shares on them from another subnet (10.34.x.x). Firewall is disabled on these servers. Trying to access with UNC "\172.16.x.x\sharename" and net use \172.16.x.x However, we're having problems doing this. We are getting "The network path was not found". Here's some of the things we've tried so far and the result: Tried accessing the share from other (non-2008) servers on the same subnet... Success! Ping servers from different subnet... Success! Telnet connection into port 139 from different subnet... Success! Took a scan through Local Security Policies to see if something obvious needed to be enabled / disabled / configured... Fail I'm not sure where to look next. I know that the router between the two subnets is locked down pretty good, but this did work for our 2003 servers. Has anything changed in the way of ports used for UNC / file share access in 2008? Maybe I'm missing some security policy setting? Hoping somebody can take pity on a poor programming guy that can't figure out something really simple. :-) Thanks!

• Getting Correct Edition of Office 2007 from Serial Key

  I have been asked by a Client to refresh one of their Machines. To do this i managed to get Windows XP Setup to run in Repair mode, and while in setup i ran a serial key grabber, which grabbed the key for Office 2007 The only thing is that the key grabber didnt tell me what edition of Office 2007 was installed. I have aqquired a number of ISO's for the different editions (Home & Student, Standard, Professional, Ultimate) but the key doesnt work in any of them. Is there a way to get the edition from the Serial Key, or is there a generic ISO that will install any edition depending on the Serial Key?

• Parallels Plesk returning strange numbers

  Hi everyone, As a relatively new Server Admin I've become a bit confused by some statistics Parallels Plesk Panel 10.0.1 is returning to me. I have a domain ('subscription') set up, mysite.com. Mysite.com only hosts files, mostly images Its file contents use up about 390MB of disk space Here's a screenshot: this is what Plesk is reporting mysite.com to use: And some more info: Now this is pretty confusing... I thought at first my site might have been hacked and had contents written to disk, but I checked and all is in order, nothing has been hacked into as far as I can tell. So I had a look in the site's CP for some more in-depth statistics, and this is what's returned... Now - sod's law - when I go to check my disk space statistics in more depth via the control panel, this morning it says "The data were not collected yet." - not too sure what that means, but, last night when I checked it was reporting something odd. It said Files were using up 390MB, but 1.80GB or so were being used up by 'Mail Accounts'. This is really strange, as there are no mail accounts set up for the domain. The only hint of 'mail' there is, is the catchall set up to forward *@mysite.com to a separate, ISP-hosted email account. Any ideas anybody? I can post more details if you need it. • How to find date/time used by Cassandra

  Earlier this morning I noticed that one of the nodes in our Cassandra cluster is writing logs an hour in the future, despite the date/time being correct on the OS. A couple of other nodes I checked via logs appear to be writing logs at the correct time. I now need to go through and check each node in our 80 node cluster and ensure cassandra is running on the correct time, problem being is some of the nodes don't write to the logs very often as they aren't doing much... the question is, is there some form of tool/utility (ie nodetool) that can tell me the time that cassandra is running on? All the systems date/times are correct, ntpdate cron in place has been for a while. Servers are set to Belize timezone to avoid DST changes so its nothing to do with that.

• iMac 20inch (Mid 2007) SL DVD Boot Prohibitory Sign

  iMac 20inch (Mid 2007 Build) with Ubuntu 12.0.4 How I got in this situation I had a perfectly healthy Intel iMac running Snow Leopard several months ago. Then I got the dreaded spinning gear and several kernel panics. After getting a little frustrated (failing to find a solution online), I found an old macbook installation disk and used it to access Disk Utility. From here, I erased my entire hard drive leaving me with no OS. I then created a Ubuntu DVD and installed Ubuntu onto the system. Now, on Ubuntu, I wine installed Transmac and burned a Single layer copy (with languages, etc. removed to save space) of Snow Leopard onto a 4.7GB DVD. I tried to boot from it and was met with first the grey apple screen and a spinning cog before the grey apple shortly turned into the infamous prohibitory sign. Note: I met this problem previously when using Disk Utility to create a bootable USB of Snow Leopard, hence I severely doubt it has anything to do with the DVD created. Resources at my disposal 1 x iMac running Ubuntu 6 x 4.7GB DVDs 1 x USB Stick 12GB 1 x Windows 7 Laptop Resources I do not have Firewire cables Access to a prebuilt retail disk (Misplaced) Access to another Mac Apple Warranty I would be hugely grateful if someone was able to tell me how to install Snow Leopard again.

• How to test/debug bad network wiring?

  I recently bought a place already wired with Cat 5E (8 ports, leading to a central closet). However attempting to get link, nothing works. On closer examination, it was obvious that the ends in the closet were wired backwards (brown on pin 1, etc). The jacks that I've pulled out of the wall do look to be correctly done. However, testing with a network cable tester shows zero link between any of the jacks and any of the ports in the closet - I had expected to just see a 1/8, 2/7, ... 8/1 mismatch, but instead get nothing at all. The runs are accessible and look neat, though they take some bends that seem quite sharp and are in some cases much longer than they need to be (the person who put this in was a professional electrician but I suspect this was the first time he ran network cabling). My best guess at this point is that he either bought bad cable, or put so much tension on it that he snapped wires. Though it seems surprising/unlikely that I wouldn't get at least one active wire on one of the 8 lines. So, my question: is there anything else I should try or test before I go ripping out everything and running new cable?

• Why Does Private Access Remain Non-Private in .NET Within a Class?

  While cleaning some code today written by someone else, I changed the access modifier from Public to Private on a class variable/member/field. I expected a long list of compiler errors that I use to "refactor/rework/review" the code that used this variable. Imagine my surprise when I didn't get any errors. After reviewing, it turns out that another instance of the Class can access the private members of another instance declared within the Class. Totally unexcepted. Is this normal? I been coding in .NET since the beginning and never ran into this issue, nor read about it. I may have stumbled onto it before, but only "vaguely noticed" and move on. Can anyone explain this behavoir to me? Am I doing something wrong? I found this behavior in both C# and VB.NET. The code seems to take advantage of the ability to access private variables. • Android Signal analysis + some filters.

  Hello, as the world cup is the main sport event and the Vuvuzelas are the most annoying sound in the world, I had an idea to remove them definitively by reading this new ( http://www.popsci.com/diy/article/2010-06/simple-software-can-filter-out-vuvuzela-whine) that told us that the sound has some frequencies at 233Hz + 466,932,1864Hz. I have already made a lot of Android application by myself but never touching the signal analysis and filtering part, so here are a few questions, I do not ask for precise answer but maybe links and tutorial to find something to work on. I guess that a new Android phone has the CPU and power to make real-time filtering. 1) How can I intercept the sound coming from the Jack microphone - Line-IN plug- ( I plan to link my TV to my phone with Jack to Jack plug). My question is totally software and coding, I have all the wires and adapters to plug a jack into my android phone Line IN. 2) Are there some Fourier analysis librairies, may I have a look to Java libraries on the web and import them to my Android project? • Front panel audio replacement

  I have experienced some problems with my headphones and it turned out the front 3.5mm audio jack is defective..and it doesn't make a good contact. I can't replace the jack because it's built-in. I am wondering if there are such things as "modular" Front panels to be inserted into the available external 3.5" bay and, of course, to support (natively, internal connector) Realtek HD Audio. (my case is Asus TA-K5, but I guess it doesn't make any difference)

• Wrapping a C# service in a console app to debug it.

  I want to debug a service written in C# and the old fashioned way is just too long. I have to stop the service, start my application that uses the service in debug mode (Visual studio 2008), start the service, attach to the service process and then navigate in my Asp.Net application to trigger the service. I basically have the service running in the background, waiting for a task. The web application will trigger a task to be picked up by the service. What I would like to do is to have a console application that fires the service in an effort for me to debug. Is there any simple demo that anybody knows about? Thank you Jack

• How will a search engine read data from my Ajax-based webapp?

  OK, not entirely related to programming, so I'm sorry. But I'd like to know about this: So I've got a webapp. There's one column where a list of results are fetched from the database. When you click one, jQuery fetches the information associated with that result and puts it into the second column - all without a refresh and using Ajax. Is it possible for Google to still read it etc.? I understand it can follow links... but presumably not Javascript actions etc.? If this is the case, what do other Ajax-heavy websites do about search engine optimisation? Jack

• Turning HTML character entities to 'regular' letters... why is it only partially working?

  I'm using all of the below to take a field called 'code' from my database, get rid of all the HTML entities, and print it 'as usual' to the site: <?php $code = preg_replace('~&#x([0-9a-f]+);~ei', 'chr(hexdec("\\1"))', $code); $code = preg_replace('~&#([0-9]+);~e', 'chr("\\1")', $code); $code = html_entity_decode($code); ?> However the exported code still looks like this: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader(src=’img/the_image.png’); See what's going on there?
