  • "Windows cannot find" file when opening Excel spreadsheet

    For all of my Excel spreadsheets when I attempt to open them (by double-clicking in explorer) I get the message "Windows cannot find C:...". The files are there, and are valid zip files as seen by 7-Zip. There are no apparent lock files in the directories. I did just install Norton-360 over the weekend (replacing Kasperski), but the Norton log shows no events related to Excel. However, while installing Norton I did reboot with some Excel files open. Presumably something is hosed in my Excel configuration but I don't know what. Update (Before actually posting) -- I found an article that suggested turning off Advanced Option "Ignore other applications that use DDE", then doing excel.exe /unregister followed by excel.exe /register. I tried this but I suspect that the two Excel calls were ignored (Excel opened, but no obvious change). With that option off the spreadsheets load OK, but not with it on. And, curiously, spreadsheets load OK with the option on or off if I open Excel first and then open the spreadsheet in it. Does anyone have any idea what effect leaving that option off will have? Update 2 -- I tried running the "repair" option. It said it corrected a couple of config things (without saying what they were), but I still get a failure if I double-click an Excel file with the "Ignore other applications..." option checked. Update 3 -- I managed to fix this problem, but failed at the time to come back and say what I did, and now I can't remember for sure. But I think it had something to do with "Options"/"Save" and some of the values there. Something to do with AutoRecover, perhaps. (Possibly there was a file in recovery and I had to specify "Disable AutoRecover for this workbook" to let bring-up get past it. Or perhaps the AutoRecover file location was hosed.) Anyway, if it happens to someone else, and you find the fix, post it below and I'll mark it answered.

  • Is there any special way to force GoBack to work with Windows Vista and 7?

    Norton/Roxio's GoBack doesn't work with Vista/7 for reasons unknown. I have tried several alternatives (Norton Ghost, RollbackRX, Norton Save and Restore), none of which offer the same functionality as GoBack. Not only does GoBack not eat up all your hard drive space while creating a legitimate fail safe for any pc problems, it also allows you to see ACTIVELY EXACTLY WHAT PROCESS ARE BEING EXECUTED ON YOUR COMPUTER. This feature (called Advanced Disk Drive Restore) also allows you to troubleshoot problems and determine causes for things in about half a second by seeing what is happening on your machine. It's how I learned everything I know about computers. GoBack also features something called Safe Try Mode where you can put it in SafeTry and then mess up the whole computer and when you come out of it, your computer will be exactly how it was before. Amazing for people who like to tinker without risking their machine stability. It also helps for that accidentally erased paper or whatever you may have erased. I believe GoBack installs a type44 partition around the drive, which loads prior to windows to allow this functionality. If you're going to recommend another program, please don't (unless it does all of the above). I've tried all the competition and nothing is as good. I just want my GoBack to work with 7 :) Any ideas of crazy ways to make this work?

  • unable to copy file to folder, permission denied without explanation

    Recently Norton Internet security deleted ml.exe (an assembler I use to program in masm32) off of my computer, thinking that one of the programs I had written with it was a virus (it was most certainly not). Fortunately, I had a copy of ml.exe backed up in an external hard drive, and tried to copy it over to my computer. The old ml.exe was located in C:\masm32\bin, so I tried to copy the new one to that location. After disabling Norton (which had opened the folder and preventing me from accessing it), I am still unable to copy the new file to C:\masm32\bin. When I tried, Windows announced that I would need Administrator permission to copy the file. Since I'm an admin, I figured this wouldn't be a problem although it was unexpected, as I have never had to provide administrator permission to access this folder before. However, instead of prompting me to enter my password, Windows simply refuses to copy the file: I repeat, I was not asked to provide a password. It simply says that I do not have permission. Does anyone know what's happening and how to fix it? Is Norton still causing problems, or it something else?

But I guess something is going wrong at my side and its not working for the above formats but my code is working fine for .txt and .pdf files. I have the read the document regarding Webview it states it supports viewing of the above document. below is my snippet for .doc [webView loadData:requestData MIMEType:@"application/msword" textEncodingName:@"UTF-8" baseURL:nil]; for .ppt I am using MIME type as "application/vnd.ms-powerpoint" Note: If I am making MIME type as "text/html" for .doc then it displays some garbage data So I think there is something missing in MIME type from my side.     I'm learning Ruby on Rails through Micheal Hartl's tutorial. In my web application, I require two types of Users, called publishers and subscribers. Currently I have a publishers resource and a subscribers resource. I'd like both of them to be able to use the sessions resource for signin/signout. I'm looking for some direction on how to implement this. Should my publisher and subscriber resource inherit from the User resource, so that, for example, the following code works through polymorphism? def create user = User.find_by_email(params[:session][:email]) if user && user.authenticate(params[:session][:password]) # Sign the user in and redirect to the user's show page. else # Create an error message and re-render the signin form. end end The publisher and subscriber do not have many common fields and different capabilities, so I think they should be modeled as two separate resources, but how to have them share the Sessions resource?

  • Python - do big doc strings waste memory?

    I understand that in Python a string is simply an expression and a string by itself would be garbage collected immediately upon return of control to a code's caller, but... Large class/method doc strings in your code: do they waste memory by building the string objects up? Module level doc strings: are they stored infinitely by the interpreter? Does this even matter? My only concern came from the idea that if I'm using a large framework like Django, or multiple large open source libraries, they tend to be very well documented with potentially multiple megabytes of text. In these cases are the doc strings loaded into memory for code that's used along the way, and then kept there, or is it collected immediately like normal strings?

  • HTML - Word Doc Images

    Okay I have roughly 150 + pages of procedures all written in MS word. The person who wrote the procedures did an excellent job of recording the process how to perform specific tasks. This individual went though and created screen shots a MS word doc. There are approx 2 screen shots per page. So it is roughly 300 images and I do not want to recreate the wheel. Does anyone know a quick way of handling the images? The written portion is pretty straightforward but the images is what I am struggling with. Regards, Mike

    After about 15 minutes, a Norton Ghost 14 backup fails with Error EBAB03F1: The specified network name is no longer available. The source computer is a P4 laptop running Windows XP SP3. The target computer is a Core2 Quad desktop running Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. It does not help to disable Norton 360 on the source computer or Norton Antivirus 2008 on the target computer. The Event Viewer consistently shows the same two VSS-related errors after Norton Ghost starts but before it fails. It makes no difference if the VSS service is started or stopped. The VSS errors do not appear elsewhere in the event log, only after Ghost starts. The MSS event messages, however, are quite common, appearing throughout the log, and they may have nothing to do with the problem.   • Microsoft Word restores all open documents when clicking on a .DOC file

    I tend to have a few Word documents that I keep open all the time, with notes for a long-running project. Normally they are all minimized. The problem is that when I click on a different .doc or .docx file in Windows Explorer, even though the new document opens in its own window, the other, minimized Word documents get restored, too. Now I have several restored windows that I wanted to keep minimized. I started noticing this problem on Windows 7, but I'm not sure if it's unique to Windows 7. I'm using Word 2007.

  • Natively open .doc or .odt file in LaTex

    I have looked at ways to convert word or open office text files to LaTex format, and those have been addressed on SU here and here. These will work, but I'd rather have a native single-step solution. Does anyone know of any module or add-on for LaTex that will let one open .doc and/or .odt files without the use of third-party conversion tools? It would be ideal if it would allow for editing and saving in the same format. If it makes any difference, I am using LaTex Editor in Windows.

  • Word 2007 cannot open old doc files anymore

    Since last week I am unable to open old doc files with Microsoft Word 2007. Whenever I try that I first get a warning about converters being a security issue. (I can disable that in the registry). After accepting (or disabling) this warning, however, I just get the following error message: Unglütiger Datentyp (Word 6.0/95 für Windows & Macintosh which means in English: Invalid document type (Word 6.0/95 for Windows & Macintosh I tried to goolge both the German and the translated error message but did not find anything related. The files in question can be opened by other users for the windows terminal server without problems.

  • Nokogiri Doc Element Not Returning Correctly

    I am trying to scrape a wiktionary entry: uri = URI.parse("http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/" + CGI.escape('abjure')) doc = Nokogiri::HTML(open(uri, 'User-Agent' => 'ruby')) but the doc shows no elements for this word. The other words work fine and this word used to work. I have no idea what changed. Anyone see anything wrong with this?

  • Automating rake doc:app

    For you rails programmers, what's the easiest way to keep your RDoc files up-to-date? I know I can run rake doc:app manually, but I really don't feel like adding a manual step to the check-in process, and since we're already using cruisecontrolrb to handle deployment and testing automation, it seems like there should be an easy way to regenerate these files on check-in. Is anyone already automating rake doc:app? And, if so, what are your suggestions?
