• Blank Screen after inactive time

  I am using Ubuntu 11.04 , on a DELL Vostro 1510. If I am inactive for a certain time, the screen usually gets locked and the login prompt will be there. Yes sometimes I am able to see the login screen and logging in as normal. But sometimes after its locked and when the mouse or keyboard is moved also nothing happens. This is happening for the second time. And its not happening always . I can switch from one terminal to other from the locked screen with Alt + + Ctrl F1 etc . But when I switch to the graphical one with Alt + Ctrl + F7 ( from the locked time ) I can see only a blank screen. I tried once login in ( Alt + Ctrl + F1 ) and trying to startx, but it said something was locked and want to delete the lock and try. So I removed don't remember what exactly it was . But it too was not a success , I was forced to press the powerbutton. Is this a bug ? I saw some but all are happening for switching users. Never experienced after logging out, but this happens only when its locked automatically actually. Update : I strongly feel this is a Bug. As I upgraded to 11.10 , I didn't noticed the same issues. But at some point if any one has an answer, you can post it. I can approve.

• Blank screen after GRUB (64 bit) - cannot install Ubuntu

  My laptop's specs: Lenovo IdeaPad Z570 Intel Core i5-2410M @ 2.3Ghz 6 Gb RAM DDR3 640 Gb ATAPI Hard-disk Drive @ 5,200 RPM NVIDIA GeForce G520M with Optimus switching technology Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter REALTEK soundcard Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit I downloaded Ubuntu Studio 11.04 and burned the iso image onto two different DVDs, using two different programs (one DVD is RW, the other is just R). I verified the hash MD5sum thing. I get as far as GRUB with the 4 options (install, advanced install, disk verification, system rescue) but no matter which one I select, I get a blank screen and nothing happens. The DVD drive spins down after about 30 seconds. Also just before the GRUB screen I get a message saying Error: "Prefix" is not set. I'm not sure if that's relevant. I have tried all the options using both DVDs. Same thing happens. I have changed the graphics setting in BIOS to UMA or Optimus, but still happens either way. I've tried booting with the wireless switch turned off, same thing happens. I downloaded 'vanilla' Ubuntu 64-bit and burned onto a CD, and the same thing happens. I have downloaded Ubuntu 32-bit and I am able to boot from the live CD (interestingly the wireless card won't work, but that's maybe another issue). I have searched extensively through these forums and other sites but I can't see anything that will help me. Is there something I'm missing? I'd really appreciate help on this. The laptop is less than 2 weeks old. I was so looking forward to getting Ubuntu Studio up and running. I've gone about as far as my technical abilities will allow.

• Blank pale blue screen with Live USB Kubuntu on AMD Sempron 2800+ processor

  I am trying to install Kubuntu onto a USB stick to use on my Acer Aspire 1362 laptop with an AMD Sempron 2800+ chip. Using Windows XP, I downloaded and saved to the laptop's hard drive: kubuntu-2.04.1-desktop-i386.iso from the GetKubuntu website and LinuxLive USB Creator 2.8.16.exe from the Linux live website I then installed the latter and ran it, installing the kubuntu onto the Memory stick. Leaving the Bios setup unchanged, the USB stick is ignored and Windows boots. If I change the Bios boot order so that the memory stick takes precedence, I see a dark blue screen announcing Kubukntu 12.04, and on selecting either “live Mode” or “Persistent mode”, messages flash by quickly, some of which appear to be error messages, including “trying to unpack rootfs image as initramfs”, “cannot allocate resource for mainboard”, “no plug and play device found”. Eventually I see a pale blue screen with four moving dots announcing Kubukntu 12.04, similar to the login screen of my Kubuntu desktop, but no invitation to log in or indeed any dialog. After several minutes, this changes to a black screen with more messages including “no caching mode present”, “ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready”, then degrades to a blank pale blue screen which can only be moved by switching the computer off. Finding no way to log the error messages passing by, I managed to photograph most of them, but know no way to attach the photo to this forum. As suggested by User 68186 (to whom thanks!), I have edited my original post to reflect the recent progress, so the following two comments are now superseded.

• Lubuntu 12.04 on Acer laptop boots to blank blue screen

  My previous question on this was closed, but I am posting it again as the solution which my son eventually found may assist other users of the forum, or someone may be able to tweak the solution to improve the performance. Having installed Kubuntu 12.04.01 from a live USB onto my desktop, I wanted to do the same on my laptop, an Acer Aspire 1362 Laptop, which has 256MB RAM (actually 512 "on the box", but a good deal can be borrowed by the graphics!). I found Kubuntu wouldn't run on so little memory but downloaded: Lubuntu-12.04-alternate-i386.iso, which I understood was light enough to go. The laptop has one internal 40GB Toshiba hard drive divided into 3 partitions: C,19GB with Windows XP, Windows program files and some data, D, 19GB mostly data, and a small 2GB partition with some Acer software, which XP can't normally “see”. I transferred most of the contents of D to a memory stick, leaving 16GB free for Lubuntu. I did not want to dump XP yet, though it is painfully slow. I installed Lubuntu from then USB stick, accepting the default answers to most of the questions. The D: partition was further partitioned into a 500MB boot partition, 10GB for Linux, 2GB Swap and 6GB for data shareable between Linux and Windows. I had no error messages during installation, rebooted, was offered the choice of Ubuntu or XP, and selected the former. After a few minutes, I get a dark blue screen announcing Lubuntu with five dots underneath which lighten in turn. Eventually the lights stopped, and whatever I try the screen remains blank apart from “Lubuntu” I tried several solutions suggested on the forum for “identical” questions but without success.

A user can submit a blank a password/confirmation and rails will sign them in, because the User model allows blank on update. It's not a security concern, since an attacker would still need access to a user's email account before they could get anywhere near this action, but my problem is that a user submitting 6 blank chars would be signed in, and their password would not be changed for them, which could lead to confusion later on. • Creating an OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 OpenDIrectory database with a specific domain in mind

  Mountain Lion Server has been one of the most infuriating things ever recently. Above and beyond tons of crashing I've been completely unable to do the following in a way that makes sense to both me and Apple. Name your server srv01.myoffice.domain.com Create an OpenDirectory database as a Master from scratch as dc=domain,dc=com I can rename my server temporarily (taking down vital services in the process due to the automagicliciousness) and create a new profile, however when I switch back to the original domain name the default search base for server related authentication magic is now dc=srv01,dc=myoffice,dc=domain,dc=com. I've tried everything I can think of including using slapconfig backupdb/restoredb and slaving the server off of another then promoting it. This seems rather silly and Apple shows no response to many requests to resolve this. Does anybody out there have the magic to have OpenDirectory work as it should.. being able to give it any domain you want and then having all vital services operate correctly.

• Distributing processing for an application that wasn't designed with that in mind

  We've got the application at work that just sits and does a whole bunch of iterative processing on some data files to perform some simulations. This is done by an "old" Win32 application that isn't multi-processor aware, so new(ish) computers and workstations are mostly sitting idle running this application. However, since it's installed by a typical Windows Install Shield installer, I can't seem to install and run multiple copies of the application. The work can be split up manually before processing, enabling the work to be distributed across multiple machines, but we still can't take advantage of multiple core CPUs. The results can be joined back together after processing to make a complete simulation. Is there a product out there that would let me "compartmentalize" an installation (or 4) so I can take advantage of a multi-core CPU? I had thought of using MS Softgrid, but I believe that still depends on a remote server to do the heavy lifting (though please correct me if I'm wrong). Furthermore, is there a way I can distribute the workload off the one machine? So an input could be split into 50 chunks, handed out to 50 machines, and worked on? All without really changing the initial application? In a perfect world, I'd get the application to take advantage of a DesktopGrid (BOINC), but like most "mission critical corporate applications", the need is there, but the money is not. Thank you in advance (and sorry if this isn't appropriate for serverfault).

  If your laptop Screen is Blank and there is no POST, BIOS or boot, you can follow the steps mentioned here and there are chances that it will work if there is no hardware failure inside. Step 1: Remove the power cord from the laptop Step 2: Remove the battery from the laptop Step 3: Hold power button (keep it pressed) for almost 60 seconds Step 4: Plug power back in laptop Step 5: Start computer and it should just start normally. Step 6: Now shut down Step 7: Insert the battery back in the laptop Step 8: Start laptop again and it should work Note 1: If your laptop does not work after inserting back the memory. Remove the memory and repeat above process. Do not insert the battery back as it is malfunctioning. Note 2: If your screen is faulty or have issues with your hardware (motherboard, screen or anything else) this method will not fix your computer. Those, who care about how I come up with this not SQL related blog post, here is the very funny true story. If you are a married man, you will know what I am going to describe next. May be you have faced the same situation or at least you feel and understand my situation. My wife’s computer suddenly stops working when she was searching for my daughter’s mathematics worksheets online. While the fatal accident happened with my wife’s computer (which was my loyal computer for over 4 years before she got it), I was working in my home office, fixing a high priority issue (live order’s database was corrupted) with one of the largest eCommerce websites.  While I was working on production server where I was fixing database corruption, my wife ran to my home office. Here is how the conversation went: Wife: This computer does not work. I: Restart it. Wife: It does not start. I: What did you do with it? Wife: Nothing, it just stopped working. I: Okey, I will look into it later, working on the very urgent issue. Wife: I was printing my daughter’s worksheet. I: Hm.. Okey. Wife: It was the mathematics worksheet, which you promised you will teach but you never get around to do it, so I am doing it myself. I: Thanks. I appreciate it. I am very busy with this issue as million dollar transaction are not happening as the database got corrupted and … Wife: So what … umm… You mean to say that you care about this customer more than your daughter. You know she got A+ in every other class but in mathematics she got only A. She missed that extra credit question. I: She is only 4, it is okay. Wife: She is 4.5 years old not 4. So you are not going to fix this computer which does not start at all. I think our daughter next time will even get lower grades as her dad is busy fixing something. I: Alright, I give up bring me that computer. Our daughter who was listening everything so far she finally decided to speak up. Daughter: Dad, it is a laptop not computer. I: Yes, sweety get that laptop here and your dad is going to fix the this small issue of million dollar issue later on. I decided to pay attention to my wife’s computer. She was right. No matter what I do, it will not boot up, it will not start, no BIOS, no POST screen. The computer starts for a second but nothing comes up on the screen. The light indicating hard drive comes up for a second and goes off. Nothing happens. I removed every single USB drive from the laptop but it still would not start. It was indeed no fun for me. Finally I remember my days when I was not married and used to study in University of Southern California, Los Angeles. I remembered that I used to have very old second (or maybe third or fourth) hand computer with me. In polite words, I had pre-owned computer and it used to face very similar issues again and again. I had small routine I used to follow to fix my old computer and I had decided to follow the same steps again with this computer. I: Fantastic. After saying that I started to look at my database corruption and my wife interrupted me again. Wife: Btw, I forgot to tell you. Our daughter had got A in mathematics last week but she had another quiz today and she already have received A+ there. I kept my promise. I looked at her and she started to walk outside room, before I say anything my phone rang. DBA from eCommerce company had called me, as he was wondering why there is no activity from my side in last 10 minutes. DBA: Hey bud, are you still connected. I see um… no activity in last 10 minutes. I: Oh, well, I was just saving the world. I am back now. After two hours I had fixed the database corruption and everything was normal. I was outsmarted by my wife but honestly I still respect and love her the same as she is the one who spends countless hours with our daughter so she does not miss me and I can continue writing blogs and keep on doing technology evangelism. I also cannot create a shortcut to it. No error message is displayed, instead simply nothing happens. I've tried using Shell Object Editor (using Run as Administrator) to find out if there is an errant entry on the Control Panel, but many entries (almost two dozen) are blank. There are several valid entries as well. I've looked through the registry and through C:\Windows, \system32, and \SysWOW64 but have had no success. I looked at this question, but I am not using Windows XP and thus have no option to use Tweak UI's Rebuild Icons function. Please note that this is no empty entry in the Control Panel when opened normally, only when attached to the Start Menu as a menu. I have compared the list of entries on the attached menu to the normal Control Panel and other than the blank entry, they are exactly the same. Nothing is missing from one or the other. I've also compared the menu and the normal view to reference images and lists of Control Panel items and have found no irregularities. Is anyone familiar with this problem or know of a solution? I've performed virus and malware scans and found nothing. I've used CCleaner with no change. Nothing with Shell Object Editor. Nothing with Registry Editor. Certainly someone here knows how to fix this. My only guess is the many blank entries visible in Shell Object Editor, but I am reluctant to delete that many items without further analysis and guidance. I appreciate your time and consideration.

• MS Word 2007 Randomly Saves a blank doc

  Got a user that everyone once in awhile (maybe once every 2 weeks or so) will do a "save as" in their Word 2007 and the created, saved document will be blank. But most of the time, "save as" works fine. Already re-installed the whole Office Suite. It's fine when he does email attachments. This is not related to email. Sequence of events (from client): I create a new document and select SAVE AS I select a file to SAVE AS I create a name ie. ExampleFileA I select SAVE A blank document is what is saved I can sometimes recover the content of the document by selecting RECENT DOCUMENTS Yesterday, the file for ExampleFileA in RECENT DOCUMENTS was blank The situation has occurred with both pre-existing and newly created documents Any thoughts?

• Chrome opens to untitled blank page

  I am working on a computer that had a lot of malware on it. I removed most of it to my knowledge. Now when I open Google Chrome I get a blank untitled page, with the traditional sign-in URL on top. If I go to the settings, the settings tab opens up blank as well. All pages that I navigate to will come up blank as well. The browser doesn't even perform a postback, it is like it is unresponsive. I did some googling and have seen people with similar errors, but no fixes. IE 8 works great without issues. Re-installing Chrome was the first thing I did! Any suggestions?

  I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and I'm having an issue with Cacti 0.8.8b not displaying any data in graphs. The graphs are being created and I see files in /var/lib/cacti/rra. The device in cacti shows that that it's able to query snmp and ping is alive. The graphs are still empty though. snmpwalk 127.0.0.1 -v2c -c public works as it should. It walks all MIBs. I'm quite perplexed as to why this isn't working any longer. It was graphing data but then it just stopped. And when it was graphing data it was graphing it intermittently. • Update to 13.10: blank screen and repeated suspend on resume from suspend

  On my Asus x201e, after updating from 13.04 to 13.10, intermittently when awaking from suspend, my screen will blink to a black screen a few times, offers a lock screen, and then go back to suspend unexpectedly (during this it is possible to quickly login to the desktop before the system suspends again). This will repeat each time I subsequently awake it from suspend. Only a restart will escape the suspend loop. The problem only occurs when suspending by closing lid, not by manual (pm-suspend) or menu suspend. Opening the lid after a manual or menu-initiated suspend works as expected. When an external monitor is attached, the black screen and second lock screen still appear twice upon wake, but the system does not fall back into suspend (though networking is disabled and needs to be restarted). This issue arose in tandem with the already raised issue regarding networking not restarting on wake from suspend, though appears to be distinct from that issue and persists after a fix is applied for the networking issue. This issue only occurs on waking from suspend, never upon booting. And only on the second suspend cycle after reboot. This question duplicates the second, unanswered question included in this closed question and seems to correspond with this reported bug. Any ideas for a workaround?

• Blank space on right side of screen with XMonad/Gnome

  Fresh install of 11.10 x64. I set up XMonad with gnome-session as I did before on 11.04, following the guide on the Arch wiki. Everything works, but there's this weird vertical space about the size of a scrollbar on the side of the screen. The space is also above xmobar (the battery system tray icon is hidden behind it and I can't click it). XMonad weird space (since I can't post images) Is there some weird XMonad or Gnome option I'm missing? I don't even know where to begin to look.

• Trouble installing Server 12.10 - Dead keyboard, Blank Screen, Network Config

  Installing 12.10 server from cd - minimal installation: basic system, ssh server,postgreSQL, manual updates. Hardware is brand new HP server that also runs Win 2003 Server Standard as a DNC excellently - I installed the grub boot manager on the primary partition and it is working fine - can boot to Win or Ubuntu without issue. Everything seemed to go OK on the installation - BUT when I restarted the system after install and booted to Ubuntu, I got the command prompt for Ubuntu, but the keyboard was UNREPSONSIVE - dead. There is nothing wrong with the keyboard - works fine if I boot to Win. With a completely unrepsonsive keyboard I had to hit the power switch - when I restarted and booted to Ubuntu, Ubuntu started but no command prompt came up at all - just black screen. I powered down and rebooted to advanced Ubuntu options - it tried to reinstall/initliaze a long list of packages - when it got to 'waiting for network configuration' it waited, then a message 'waiting 60 seconds for network configuration'... it waited 60 seconds and then I got a 'failed to configure network message' and it continued. Finally it finished, I hit enter and got to a prompt - but again, keyboard UNREPSONSIVE - dead. I went through this several times - tried 'repairing broken installation' option and also reinstalling entirely - always same results. I am flummoxed. The only clue I have is that for the Windows DNC config, the IP address is static - not via DHCP. But I don't think that should impact Ubuntu at all - perhaps I am mistaken. What is wrong?

• Blank screen after installing nvidia restricted driver

  I have a new machine with a MSI N560GTX Ti Twin Frozr II/OC graphic card and MSI PH67A-C43 (B3) main board. If i install the current nvidia restricted driver and reboot the machine on Natty (64-bit), then i only get a black screen after reboot and my system does not respond. I can´t see the login screen. On nvidia web page i saw that the current driver is 270.41.06. Is that driver used as current driver? Btw, i am an ubuntu/linux beginner and therefore not very familiar with ubuntu. What can i do to solve the black screen problem? EDIT: Setting the nomodeset parameter does not solve the problem. After ubuntu start, first i see the ubuntu logo, then strange pixels and at the end the black screen. HELP! EDIT2: Thank you, but setting the "video=vesa:off gfxpayload=text" parameters do no solve the problem too. Same result as in last edit. HELP. I would like to see Unity. • Force Blank TextBox with ASP.Net MVC Html.TextBox

  I recently ran into a problem with the following scenario: I have data with a parent/child data with a one-to-many relationship from the parent to the child. I want to be able to update parent and existing child data AND add a new child record all in a single post. I don't want to create a model just to store the new values. One of the things I LOVE about MVC is how flexible it is in dealing with posted data.  If you have data that isn't in your model, you can simply use the non-strongly-typed HTML helper extensions and pass the data into your actions as parameters or use the FormCollection.  I thought this would give me the solution I was looking for.  I simply used Html.TextBox("NewChildKey") and Html.TextBox("NewChildValue") and added parameters to my action to take the new values.  So here is what my action looked like: [HttpPost] public ActionResult EditParent(int? id, string newChildKey, string newChildValue, FormCollection forms) {     Model model = ModelDataHelper.GetModel(id ?? 0);     if (model != null)     {         if (TryUpdateModel(model))         {             if (ModelState.IsValid)             {                 model = ModelDataHelper.UpdateModel(model);             }             string[] keys = forms.GetValues("ChildKey");             string[] values = forms.GetValues("ChildValue");             ModelDataHelper.UpdateChildData(id ?? 0, keys, values);             ModelDataHelper.AddChildData(id ?? 0, newChildKey, newChildValue);             model = ModelDataHelper.GetModel(id ?? 0);         }        return View(report);     }    return new EmptyResult(); } The only problem with this is that MVC is TOO smart.  Even though I am not using a model to store the new child values, MVC still passes the values back to the text boxes via the model state.  The fix for this is simple but not necessarily obvious, simply remove the data from the model state before returning the view: ModelState.Remove("NewChildKey"); ModelState.Remove("NewChildValue"); Two lines of code to save a lot of headaches.

• Why does Unity screen blank out over XDMCP?

  My XDMCP sessions display fine until I login. I've checked all logs and settings for this and can't find anything wrong, this works fine on other systems so I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the underlying hardware or an application that loads when logging in. System details: - Ubuntu 12.04 (Desktop, installed via Alternate CD for RAID) - 8GB of RAM - Core2Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz - Gigabit Network (Ethernet) Other notes: - Running with the onscreen keyboard enabled - Works fine when logging in locally Pre-login: Once logged in:
