• The most mind-bending programming language?

  From a reasonably common programming language, which do you find to be the most mind-bending? I have been listening to a lot of programming podcasts and taking some time to learn some new languages that are being considered upcoming, and important. I'm not necessarily talking about BrainFuck, but which language would you consider to be one that challenges the common programming paradigms? For me, I did some functional and logic (ex. Prolog) programming in the 90s, so can't say that I find anything special there. I am far from being an expert in it, but even today the most mind-bending programming language for me is Perl. Not because "Hello World" is hard to implement but rather there is so much lexical flexibility that some of the hardest solutions can be decomposed so poetically that I have to walk outside away from my terminal to clear my head. I'm not saying I'd likely sell a commercial software implementation, just that there is a distinct reason Perl is so (in)famous. Just look at the basic list of books on it. So, what is your mind-bending language that promotes your better programming and practices?

• Free Cloud Mind Map Solution

  As a Software Engineer we had a lot of discussion on SE design. Although we sync every document on the development process on Google Doc, mind map just didn’t fit in Google doc yet. The best we can do is to store a copy and share it online. To me, Mind map is an ir-replaceable piece of tools (yet) as agile note taking tools. And an eFormat is even greater than a paper one, due to the portability and extensibility. Does anyone have a good solution on “cloud-sharing” mind map? (We are using FreeMind at the moment) Thanks

• Blank Screen After Login on Windows 7

  When unlocking a Windows 7 computer the screen briefly (less than a second) goes blank before showing the screen. Abound once a month (but sometimes within a few days) when I unlock my computer the screen doesn't come back from this brief blackout and stays black. Sometimes after five minutes or so the display will come back. Other times it has been blank for over 20 minutes, so I give up and restart the computer. It seems to happen more often when the computer has been locked for a longer period of time - I lock my computer several times a day, but the problem most happens when I come in at the start of the day. I have updated my video card and monitor drivers. I have two monitors driven by the same graphics card. The computer is a Dell Optiplex 740. When the problem occurs both monitors have a green light on to indicate that they are receiving signal. I've tried unplugging the monitors from the video card and turning the monitors on and off. The screen saver is set to one that is not blank screen. The Windows power settings are set to never turn off the display. When the problem occurs there is no significant disk activity occurring. When the problem occurs I can connect over the network to the hard drive on my computer. When the problem occurs I can't connect over the network with a VNC connection. The VNC client doesn't give an error, but also won't show the screen. The task actually seems to hang as I can see the task, but there is no window for it. This problem occurred when I was running a pre-release version of Windows 7. The hard drive was formatted for release version and the problem still occurs. I've been stopping some of my always running programs to see if one of them may be the culprit, but given the span between failures that will take some time to find the problem if it will even help at all. Some programs I have always running include IE, Firefox, Outlook, Evernote, Kana Reminder, Ditto, Macro Express, Timesnapper, and DisplayFusion. Any ideas appreciated.

  My acer aspire laptop suddenly stopped working while it was connected to my nokia mobile modem through usb. It stopped with power swich staying on and no response to clicking off, no irregular sound, nothing but just a blank screen. I disconnected the power and battery quickly but power switch did not respond at all and even the power indicator didn't turn on again. the display was also gone after disconecting the power and removing battery. It has no response or any sign of power while both battery and power supply are working. What do you think? A completely dead mainboard? Does the MB has any safty board or fuse that could be replaced? Any suggestion will be appreciated, Thank you.

• Windows 8 sleep, blank screen on resume

  I use a SONY VAIO laptop VPCS116FA that came pre-installed with Windows 7. I have upgraded to Windows 8. The experience has been good so far but I am facing a frustrating problem. Whenever, I put my computer to sleep, it won't wake up and I have to restart it. Note that this does not affect hibernation which works perfectly fine. However, it is not a perfect alternative to sleep option. • Blank displays after inactivity, mouse cursor not showing up

  I have a Windows 7 Enterprise x86 machine that is exhibiting some strange problems. After some inactivity (it varies how long it takes), when I come back to my computer, both of my monitors are black. The monitors are on, with a black display. Moving the mouse and pressing keys on the keyboard do not work. This happens at least once a day. When I first encountered the issue, I performed a hard shutdown and restarted the computer. About 10% of the time when I did this, the resolutions on my monitors were messed up. The native resolution on the primary monitor is 1600x900, and the native on my secondary is 1440x900. None of the widescreen resolutions would be present in the display properties. I had 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024. As a workaround to this issue, I've found that if I plug in my secondary monitor as the primary monitor, and leave the secondary unplugged, then Windows will start in 1024x768 on the secondary. Then, I can use Windows 7's "Detect" feature and it finds the 1440x900 resolution, and sets it. Then I have to connect the primary monitor to the secondary port and set it as the primary. Then I can switch the two cables, putting the primary into the primary, the secondary into the secondary. Then use the "Detect" feature again, and it finds the correct resolutions. Some time after performing the above, I discovered that when the screens were blanked, I could simply press "Control+Alt+Delete", type in my password, and everything comes up fine - except my mouse cursor. All applications and features work as intended, except there is no mouse cursor (the mouse actually works though...). I have the "Show location of pointer when I press CTRL key" option selected, so I can press CTRL and use my mouse as normal - but I have no actual cursor. When the computer is in this state, UAC is also not functional. Whenever a UAC prompt appears, the screens go black (the original symptoms) and I have to press Escape to exit UAC. Because of the above symptoms (the UAC black screen thing, etc) I beleive winlogon.exe may be the culprit. However, I have no idea how to fix it. I am unable to restart winlogon.exe due to the problems I am having with winlogon.exe (the UAC black screen) Looking for any ideas.... More information Windows 7 x86 Enterprise Domain environment (I have a secondary account with administrator rights) Dell Optiplex 960 Cannot perform "optional" windows updates due to an activation issue (I am testing a windows 7 image, and an activation infrastructure has not been created yet. However, this issue was happening before I was unable to perform windows update, and windows was up to date at the time Updated video card driver (as an attempt to fixing the resolution issue) Disabled all power saving options Please let me know what else you need to help me solve this issue! • getting a blank data report vb6

  Hi, I am new to vb6. I am working to create the invoice generation application. I am using data report to show the generated invoice. The step by step working of process is Entering the data in to Invoice and ItemsInvoice tables. Then getting the maxId using (Adodc) from the data base to show the last generated Invoice. Then passing the max Id as parameter to the data report which is showing the invoice according to the invoice id. It is working fine when I first time generate invoice. Now for 2nd invoice withou closing application I am getting a blank data report. For data report I am using dataenvironment. I am guessing the reason of blank data report is blank because there was no record for that Id. But actually the record is inserting in the database. Please help me.

What i want to do is ignore the blank ones, I find this harder to sort through in the update controller than a non nested attribute. What i have temporarily is a hack in the after_save callback deleting the empty records. Whats the most rails way to ignore these blank objects? I dont want validation and errors, just a silent deletion/ignore.

  Hi, I have a SSRS report. When i tried to export to PDF it was taking 4 pages due to its width., where the 2nd and 4th pages were displaying one of my field from the table. So i tried to set the layout size in report properties as width=18in and height =8.5in. It gave me the whole table in a single page of PDF. But I am getting 2nd and 4th page blank. Is the way I am doing is incorrect or else how to get rid of that blank pages. Please give some ideas. Thanks in advance. Brijit

• Blank subreport in Jasper Reports

  Hi all, I'm trying to launch a report that I created in iReport which contains a main report and a subreport. In iReport, the subreport launches fine and contains data, however when I try to launch it from within my java code, the subreport is blank. What I've done so far: I have a String parameter in the main report called "SUBREPORT" that is used to define the path to the subreport. E.g. value: "E:\java\ReportLauncher\reports\test_subreport1.jasper" The subreport expression in the main report is set to: $P{SUBREPORT} The subreport connection expression is: $P{REPORT_CONNECTION} I also have a subreport parameter defined called "INVOICE_NUMBER" that is set to $F{InviInvNo}, which maps to a field in the main report. In my java code, I have: HashMap<String, Object> paramHash = new HashMap(); paramHash.put("INVOICE_NUMBER", invoiceID); paramHash.put("REPORT_CONNECTION", this.conn); paramHash.put("SUBREPORT", subReportPath); JasperPrint jasperprint = JasperFillManager.fillReport(this.reportPath, paramHash, this.conn); The main report is created fine and is populated. • Anyone know a good mind mapper that works with a scheduler?

  TL;DR: Mind mapping tasks to be processed into a schedule based on task metadata. I have all sorts of ideas about what to invest resources (mainly time) in, but when I actually have time to do something I useually end up browsing reddit for not knowing what do to, and the frequancy with which I forget deadlines scares me. I'd love to bring order and structure into my mind, and always know what to do next. So, I want a mind mapping app, where I'd give each branch (types and subtypes of things I want to do) a importance score (if there were two branches, and one had 60 while the other 40, they would respectivily get 60% and 40% of the parent's importance, with the root being 100) and a how soon that branch should be revised/updated (an hobby I want to try out might be checked, say, once a week, while a school subject should be checked once a day) and give each leaf (something I want/need to do) how much time it takes, deadline (if any), and optionally an absolute importance, reoccurrence (guitar practice might repeat once a week), and prerequisites (reading something requires that book (although that could be brought somewhere), coding requires a box, jogging requires being outside) and maybe some other flags, like if it's enjoyable or not. It should either be packaged or working with a schedular app, to which I'd say, look, my day works this way (completely busy from 8 to 9:15, then 15 minutes of being inside with nothing, ..., two hours with box and possibility to go outside, etc), saying that such-and-such pattern is school and happens ever weekday except such-and-such days. The output should be of the form of a schedule, fit for printing or, when I finally get an android, mobile viewing, that schedules tasks with regards to availability of resources and importance (importance being derived from the leaf-task's parent branches), and the set of flags (all work and no play makes me a dull boy). One of these tasks should be reviewing anything that should be updated on that day, including future day layouts (e.g, if the time slots of future days have changed. This should be done every day.) Does anyone know some collection of preferably open-source (or free, or pirateable) tools, or better yet a single one, that accomplishes this task? I know python pretty well, and should be able to write any necessary glue.

  Hi, I have some input like this: " aaaaa bbb \n cccccc\n ddddd \neeee " And I need to sanitize it like this: "aaaaa bbb cccccc ddddd neeee" Basically: Trim all blank spaces at the beginning and end of the string Strip all new lines Strip all spaces when there is more than one, but always leave ONE space between words Is there any easy way to do this or I'll have to process the string, char by char and copy the appropriate chars to a different variable?

  Hi, I need to use ZendAMF on a symfony project and I'm currently working on integrating the two. I have a frontend app with two modules, one of which is 'gateway' - the AMF gateway. In my frontend app config, I have the following in the configure function: // load symfony autoloading first parent::initialize(); // Integrate Zend Framework require_once('[MY PATH TO ZEND]\Loader.php'); spl_autoload_register(array('Zend_Loader', 'autoload')); The executeIndex function my the gateway actions.class.php looks like this // No Layout $this->setLayout(false); // Set MIME Type $this->getResponse()->setContentType('application/x-amf; charset='.sfConfig::get('sf_charset')); // Disable cause this is a non-html page sfConfig::set('sf_web_debug', false); // Create AMF Server $server = new Zend_Amf_Server(); $server->setClass('MYCLASS'); echo $server->handle(); return sfView::NONE; Now when I try to visit the url for the gateway module, or even the other module which was working perfectly fine until this attempt, I only see a blank screen, with not even the symfony dev bar loaded. Oddly enough, my symfony logs are not being updated as well, which suggests that Synfony is not even being 'reached'. So presumably the error has something to do with Zend, but I have no idea how to figure out what the error could be. One thing I do know for sure is that this is not a file path error, because if I change the path in the following line (a part of frontendConfiguration as shown above), I get a Zend_Amf_Server not found error. So the path must be correct. Also if I comment out this very same line, the second module resumes to normality, and my gateway broadcasts a blank x-amf stream. spl_autoload_register(array('Zend_Loader', 'autoload')); Does anyone have any tips on how I could attach this problem? Thanks P.S. I'm currently running an older version of Zend, which is why I am using Zend_Loader instead of Zend_autoLoader (I think). But I've tried switching to the new lib, but the error still remains. So it's not a version problem as well.

  Hello people, I have two models with a HABTM association, let´s say book and author. class Book has_and_belongs_to_many :authors end class Author has_and_belongs_to_many :books end The author has a set of attributes (e.g. first-name,last-name,age) that can all be blank (see validation). validates_length_of :first_name, :maximum => 255, :allow_blank => true, :allow_nil => false In the books_controller, I do the following to append all authors to a book in one step: @book = Book.new(params[:book]) @book.authors.build(params[:book][:authors].values) My question: What would be the easiest way to avoid the saving of authors which fields are all blank to prevent too much "noise" in the database? At the moment, I do the following: validate :must_have_some_data def must_have_some_data empty = true hash = self.attributes hash.delete("created_at") hash.delete("updated_at") hash.each_value do |value| empty = false if value.present? end if (empty) errors.add_to_base("Fields do not contain any data.") end end Maybe there is an more elegant, Rails-like way to do that. • Random blank pages on Safari when developing webapp

  Hey guys, I've been experiencing a safari problem while building a web application. The screen goes completely blank (white) and refreshing won't help. Going to another page on the site gives the same problem. Then magically, after a little while, everything goes back to normal and pages are rendered correctly! This started happening around the same time that I SUSPECT my hosting automatically upgraded from PHP 5.2.x to 5.3 (all of a sudden, we got 'deprecated function' errors and the error settings and handling were unchanged) I also have to mention that this doesn't happen in our dev environment (PHP 5.2.9, Apache 2) Settings Safari 4.0.2 and the latest one (don't know the version) Server side: PHP 5.3, MySQL 5.0.90, Apache is cPanel Easy Apache v3.2.0 Does anyone know why this is happening at all, or how to fix it? I appreciate any help or pointers you might have. Thanks!

• Do you develop with localization in mind?

  When working on a software project or a website, do you develop with localization in mind? By this I mean e.g. Externalizing all strings, including error messages. Not using images that contain text. Designing your UI with text expansion in mind. Using pseudo-translation to test your UI's early in the process. etc. On projects you work on, are these in the 'nice to have' category and let the L10N team worry about the rest, or do you have localization readiness built into your development process? I'm interested to hear how developers view localization in general.
