  • PostgreSQL-Server doesn´t start

    - by Jan-Frederik Carl
Hello, I would like to use PostgreSQL locally on my computer and have installed it. I use Windows 7. I am not able to start the PostgreSQL-Server. When using the "Start Server"-program, I get the following output in the dos command window: Start DoCmd(net start postgresql-8.4)... System error 2 (my translation) System cannot find the specified file. (my translation) Please ask, if I should give additional infos.

  • g++ problem with -l option and PostgreSQL

    - by difek
Hi I've written simple program. Here a code: #include <iostream> #include <stdio.h> #include <D:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.4\include\libpq-fe.h> #include <string> using namespace std; int main() { PGconn *conn; PGresult *res; int rec_count; int row; int col; cout << "ble ble: " << 8 << endl; conn = PQconnectdb("dbname=db_pm host=localhost user=postgres password=postgres"); if (PQstatus(conn) == CONNECTION_BAD) { puts("We were unable to connect to the database"); exit(0); } } I'm trying to connect with PostgreSQL. I compile this code with following command: gcc -I/"d:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\" -L/"d:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.4\lib\" -lpq -o firstcpp.o firstcpp.cpp This command is from following site: http://www.mkyong.com/database/how-to-building-postgresql-libpq-programs/ And when I compile it I get following error: /cygnus/cygwin-b20/H-i586-cygwin32/i586-cygwin32/bin/ld: cannot open -lpq: No such file or directory collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Does anyone help me? • Load Balancing and Failover for Read-Only PostgreSQL Database

    - by Eric J.
Scenario Multiple application servers host web services written in Java, running in SpringSource dm Server. To implement a new requirement, they will need to query a read-only PostgreSQL database. Issue To support redundancy, at least two PostgreSQL instances will be running. Access to PostgreSQL must be load balanced and must auto-fail over to currently running instances if an instance should go down. Auto-discovery of newly running instances is desirable but not required. Research I have reviewed the official PostgreSQL documentation on this issue. However, that focuses on the more general case of read/write access to the database. Top google results tend to lead to older newsgroup messages or dead projects such as Sequoia or DB Balancer, as well as one active project PG Pool II Question What are your real-world experiences with PG Pool II? What other simple and reliable alternatives are available?

  • Minimal files to run a fully-functional PostgreSQL in Windows

    - by fxam
I would like to bundle PostgreSQL into my application. I downloaded the PostgreSQL 9 beta zip without the installer. After extraction, there are 8 directories. I found out that at least the following directories are required to run PostgreSQL properly, at least under my experiments. bin lib share The question is, are the above three directories really sufficient to run a fullly functional PostgreSQL? Do I need the 'include' and 'symbols' directories? Also, can I remove 'share\locale' if I don't use these locales?

  • XAMPP with PostgreSQL

    - by fred smith
I'm looking for a package like XAMPP, but instead of MySQL it would use PostgreSQL. I've done some searching and haven't turned up anything other than doing a full server setup of both.

  • How to see active connections and "current activity" in PostgreSQL 8.4

    - by Evgeny
I'm investigating an issue with DB connections being left open indefinitely, causing problems on the DB server. How do I see currently open connections to a PostgreSQL server, particularly those using a specific database? Ideally I'd like to see what command is executing there as well. Basically, I'm looking for something equivalent to the "Current Activity" view in MSSQL.

  • How to restore PostgreSQL database from .tar file?

    - by Stephen
I have all PostgreSQL databases backed up during incremental backups using WHM, which creates a $dbName.tar file. Data is stored in these .tar files, but I do not know how to restore it back into the individual databases via SSH. In particular the file location. I have been using: pg_restore -d client03 /backup/cpbackup/daily/client03/psql/client03.tar which generates the error 'could not open input file: Permission denied' Any assistance appreciated.

  • PostgreSQL encrypted backups

    - by Nikhil Gupte
Is it possible to ensure that dumps taken from a PostgreSQL db are always encrypted? The data in the database is highly sensitive and we cannot afford un-authorized personnel, including Sys Admins who need to backup the db, to access the actual data.

  • I'm managing SQLite, MySQL and PostgreSQL databases and want a tool for this locally

    - by littlejim84
I develop web applications on Mac OSX in SQLite, MySQL and PostgreSQL and these are then put on the webserver. I want to be able to take the brunt out of looking at the terminal locally when dealing with these databases - is there any software available (free or otherwise) that can handle all three of these database technologies in a GUI for the Mac that is actually decent and worth it?

  • PostgreSQL, Ubuntu, NetBeans IDE (Part 1)

    - by Geertjan
While setting up PostgreSQL from scratch, with the aim to use it in NetBeans IDE, I found the following resources helpful: http://railskey.wordpress.com/2012/05/19/postgresql-installation-in-ubuntu-12-04/ http://ohdevon.wordpress.com/2011/09/17/postgresql-to-netbeans-1/ http://ohdevon.wordpress.com/2011/09/19/postgresql-to-netbeans-2/ For quite a while I had problems relating to  "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432", which had something to do with "postmaster.pid", which I somehow solved via a link I can't find anymore, and which may not have been a problem to begin with. A key moment was this one, which was useful for setting the password of a new user I'd created: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7695962/postgresql-password-authentication-failed-for-user-postgres This was useful for setting up a table in my database, which I did by pasting in the below into NetBeans after I made the connection there: http://use-the-index-luke.com/sql/example-schema/postgresql/where-clause Now I have a database set up with all permissions everywhere (which turned out to be the hard part) correct: The next step will be to create a NetBeans Platform application based on this database. I'm assuming it shouldn't be any different to what's described in the NetBeans Platform CRUD Tutorial.

  • How to tune down the Hyperic built-in postgresql database for a small setup

    - by Svish
We are testing out Hyperic 4.5.1 in a quite small environment for now. Currently there are just 1-5 agents and there probably won't be any more than 10-15. When I run ps ax there are 20(!) postgres processes running. For a small setup like this, that can't be necessary, can it? I'm a software developer and don't have much experience with setting up servers and such though, so don't really know. Either way, what settings are appropriate for a small Hyperic setup like this? Current, default and untouched configuration file, hqdb/data/postgresql.conf: # ----------------------------- # PostgreSQL configuration file # ----------------------------- # # This file consists of lines of the form: # # name = value # # (The '=' is optional.) White space may be used. Comments are introduced # with '#' anywhere on a line. The complete list of option names and # allowed values can be found in the PostgreSQL documentation. The # commented-out settings shown in this file represent the default values. # # Please note that re-commenting a setting is NOT sufficient to revert it # to the default value, unless you restart the server. # # Any option can also be given as a command line switch to the server, # e.g., 'postgres -c log_connections=on'. Some options can be changed at # run-time with the 'SET' SQL command. # # This file is read on server startup and when the server receives a # SIGHUP. If you edit the file on a running system, you have to SIGHUP the # server for the changes to take effect, or use "pg_ctl reload". Some # settings, which are marked below, require a server shutdown and restart # to take effect. # # Memory units: kB = kilobytes MB = megabytes GB = gigabytes # Time units: ms = milliseconds s = seconds min = minutes h = hours d = days #--------------------------------------------------------------------------- # FILE LOCATIONS #--------------------------------------------------------------------------- # The default values of these variables are driven from the -D command line # switch or PGDATA environment variable, represented here as ConfigDir. #data_directory = 'ConfigDir' # use data in another directory # (change requires restart) #hba_file = 'ConfigDir/pg_hba.conf' # host-based authentication file # (change requires restart) #ident_file = 'ConfigDir/pg_ident.conf' # ident configuration file # (change requires restart) # If external_pid_file is not explicitly set, no extra PID file is written. #external_pid_file = '(none)' # write an extra PID file # (change requires restart) #--------------------------------------------------------------------------- # CONNECTIONS AND AUTHENTICATION #--------------------------------------------------------------------------- # - Connection Settings - #listen_addresses = 'localhost' # what IP address(es) to listen on; # comma-separated list of addresses; # defaults to 'localhost', '*' = all # (change requires restart) port = 9432 # (change requires restart) max_connections = 100 # (change requires restart) # Note: increasing max_connections costs ~400 bytes of shared memory per # connection slot, plus lock space (see max_locks_per_transaction). • Web server (IIS) and database mirroring (Postgresql)

    - by Timka
Recently our web-server crashed and we had to recover everything from a backup which took the whole day(totally unacceptable in our business). So my question is, how can I create a complete mirror of the server that I can use (switch dns to) in case the same disaster happens in the future? Our main server is on Amazon with Windows 2008/IIS + Postgresql 9.1. I was thinking on creating the same server on a different location as a complete mirror with the database replication. But I'm not sure how to implement IIS instance mirroring over the internet... So my question is, how can I create a complete mirror of the server that I can use (switch dns to) in case the same disaster happens in the future?

  • Roundcube can't connect to PostgreSQL database

    - by kenny.r
I'm trying to install Roundcube on a CentOS 5.5 server, with a PostgreSQL 8.1.22 database. The first page of the installer script, that checks for the presence of php libraries and such, gives me green OKs across the board. I even went out of my way to install the optional ones. Page two generates me two configuration files (main.inc.php and db.inc.php) which I put into place. Page three is where things go wrong: Check DB config DSN (write): NOT OK(MDB2 Error: connect failed) Make sure that the configured database exists and that the user has write privileges DSN: pgsql://roundcube:password@localhost/roundcubemail The info you see there (user roundcube, password password, server localhost and database roundcubemail) is all correct. The database roundcubemail belongs to the user roundcube and it has write permissions. I have no clue why it can't connect to that database. I'm managing it with phpPgAdmin, which is running on the very same Apache, on the same server!

  • PostgreSQL: performance descrease due to index bloatper

    - by Henry-Nicolas Tourneur
I'm running a PgSQL 8.1 on a CentOS 4.4 system (not upgradable unfortunately). There's a Java app running on top of the PgSQL daemon and we got to reindex the database every 2 months or so. Also important: the database isn't growing. It looks like the bloat is now coming faster than before and this tends to increase. My config is available here, autovacuum daemon is enabled and running quite often: pastebin.com/RytNj7dK You can also find the output of this query wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Show_database_bloat 3 hours after running reindex: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=75fybKyd 72 hours after running reindex: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=89VKd7PC Does anyone have any idea what should I tweak to get rid of that growing bloat? Thanks for your help PS: due to antispam prevention system, I had to remove the first 2 http:// prefixes for my two first links.

  • how to log trigger intiated CRUD queries on postgresql 8.4

    - by user47650
in the postgresql config file there is an option log_statement = 'mod' which causes CRUD statements to be logged. However this does not include the CRUD statements that are called from trigger functions, which means that following the log file is not useful to determine what changes are being made to the database data, if the 3rd part application has been making lots of changes using triggers. Is there some other option I can use to include trigger CRUD? alternatively, can I inspect the pg_xlog in real time using some tool? (xlogdump and xlogviewer do not work with version 8.4, i have tried)

  • PostgreSQL RAID configuration

    - by Yoldar-Zi
I'm stuck how best to configure disk array. We have Hp P2000 G3 disk array with 24 SAS physical disks 300Gb each. We need to configure this array got 2 copies of PostgreSQL 9.2 because two different system. As we know it's recommended to store database and transaction logs(pg_xlog) files on separate disks. So we must setup 4 logical disk: 2 for transaction logs with RAID 1 2 for database with RAID 10 Is this right scheme of distribution? Or may be it is best to just make one big RAID 10 with 4 logical disks?
