• wcf callback exception after updating to .net 4.0

  I have a wcf service that uses callbacks with DualHttpBindings. The service pushes back a datatable of search results the client (for a long running search) as it finds them. This worked fine in .Net 3.5. Since I updated to .Net 4.0, it bombs out with a System.Runtime.FatalException that actually kills the IIS worker process. I have no idea how to even go about starting to fix this. Any recommendations appreciated. The info from the resulting event log is pasted below. • Method binding to base method in external library can't handle new virtual methods "between"

  Lets say I have a library, version 1.0.0, with the following contents: public class Class1 { public virtual void Test() { Console.WriteLine( "Library:Class1 - Test" ); Console.WriteLine( "" ); } } public class Class2 : Class1 { } and I reference this library in a console application with the following contents: class Program { static void Main( string[] args ) { var c3 = new Class3(); c3.Test(); Console.ReadKey(); } } public class Class3 : ClassLibrary1.Class2 { public override void Test() { Console.WriteLine("Console:Class3 - Test"); base.Test(); } } Running the program will output the following: Console:Class3 - Test Library:Class1 - Test If I build a new version of the library, version 2.0.0, looking like this: public class Class1 { public virtual void Test() { Console.WriteLine( "Library:Class1 - Test V2" ); Console.WriteLine( "" ); } } public class Class2 : Class1 { public override void Test() { Console.WriteLine("Library:Class2 - Test V2"); base.Test(); } } and copy this version to the bin folder containing my console program and run it, the results are: Console:Class3 - Test Library:Class1 - Test V2 I.e, the Class2.Test method is never executed, the base.Test call in Class3.Test seems to be bound to Class1.Test since Class2.Test didn't exist when the console program was compiled. This was very surprising to me and could be a big problem in situations where you deploy new versions of a library without recompiling applications. Does anyone else have experience with this? Are there any good solutions? This makes it tempting to add empty overrides that just calls base in case I need to add some code at that level in the future...

• From Sinatra Base object. Get port of application including the base object

  I have a Sinatra::Base object that I would like to include in all of my web apps. In that base class I have the configure method which is called on start-up. I would like that configure code to 'register' that service with a centralized database. The information that needs to be sent when registering is the information on how to contact this web-service... things like host and port. I then plan on having a monitoring service that will spin over all registered services and occasionally ping them to make sure they are still up and running. In the configure method I am having trouble getting the port information. The 'self.settings.port' variable doesn't seem to work in this method. a) any ideas on how to get the port? I have the host. b) is there a sinatra plug-in that already does something like this so I don't have to write it myself? :-) //in my Sinatra::Base code. lets call it register_me.rb RegisterMe < Sinatra::Base configure do //save host and port information to database end get '/check_status' //return status end //in my web service code require register_me //at this point, sinatra will initialize the RegisterMe object and call configure post ('/blah') //example of a method for this particular web service end

• Seam @Factory in abstract base class?

  I've got a series of web actions I'm implementing in Seam to perform create, read, update, etc. operations. For my read/update/delete actions, I'd like to have individual action classes that all extend an abstract base class. I'd like to put the @Factory method in the abstract base class to retrieve the item that is to be acted upon. For example, I have this as the base class: public abstract class BaseAction { @In(required=false)@Out(required=false) private MyItem item=null; public MyItem getItem(){...} public void setItem(...){...} @Factory("item") public void initItem(){...} } My subclasses would extend BaseAction, so that I don't have to repeat the logic to load the item that is to be viewed, deleted, updated, etc. However, when I start my application, Seam throws errors saying I have declared multiple @Factory's for the same object. Is there any way around this? Is there any way to provide the @Factory in the base class without encoutnering these errors?

• DBIx::Class base result class

  Hi there, I am trying to create a model for Catalyst by using DBIx::Class::Schema::Loader. I want the result classes to have a base class I can add methods to. So MyTable.pm inherits from Base.pm which inherits from DBIx::Class::core (default). Somehow I cannot figure out how to do this. my create script is below, can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?   When i was using windows, i used to run defrags, ccleaner and revouninstaller once a month to keep the system and the registry clean. I know ubuntu (and all linux distro) has a different system structure and doesnt need defrags, but i've heard there are some mainenance tasks that help to keep the system clean (for example, sudo apt-get clean or sudo apt-get autoremove) How many of those commands/software (and please explain what they do and if they can compromise the system stability) do you know and use regularly?

  Nearly 30 years ago the first Domain Name System (DNS) was tested and it changed the way we interacted with the internet. Nearly impossible to remember number addresses became easy to remember names. Without DNS you’d be browsing a web where numbered addresses pointed to numbered addresses. Google, for example, would look like http://209.85.148.105/ in your browser window. That’s assuming, of course, that a numbers-based web every gained enough traction to be popular enough to spawn a search giant like Google. How did this shift occur and what did we have before DNS? From Wikipedia: The practice of using a name as a simpler, more memorable abstraction of a host’s numerical address on a network dates back to the ARPANET era. Before the DNS was invented in 1983, each computer on the network retrieved a file called HOSTS.TXT from a computer at SRI. The HOSTS.TXT file mapped names to numerical addresses. A hosts file still exists on most modern operating systems by default and generally contains a mapping of the IP address 127.0.0.1 to “localhost”. Many operating systems use name resolution logic that allows the administrator to configure selection priorities for available name resolution methods. The rapid growth of the network made a centrally maintained, hand-crafted HOSTS.TXT file unsustainable; it became necessary to implement a more scalable system capable of automatically disseminating the requisite information. At the request of Jon Postel, Paul Mockapetris invented the Domain Name System in 1983 and wrote the first implementation.   I'm dealing with a modeling system (financial) that has dozens of variables. Some of the variables are independent, and function as inputs to the system; most of them are calculated from other variables (independent and calculated) in the system. What I'm looking for is a clean, elegant way to: define the function of each dependent variable in the system trigger a re-calculation, whenever a variable changes, of the variables that depend on it A naive way to do this would be to write a single class that implements INotifyPropertyChanged, and uses a massive case statement that lists out all the variable names x1, x2, ... xn on which others depend, and, whenever a variable xi changes, triggers a recalculation of each of that variable's dependencies. I feel that this naive approach is flawed, and that there must be a cleaner way. I started down the path of defining a CalculationManager<TModel> class, which would be used (in a simple example) something like as follows: public class Model : INotifyPropertyChanged { private CalculationManager<Model> _calculationManager = new CalculationManager<Model>(); // each setter triggers a "PropertyChanged" event public double? Height { get; set; } public double? Weight { get; set; } public double? I still feel that I'm missing something major here, and that this isn't the right approach: the (mis)use of INotifyPropertyChanged seems to me like a code smell the withInputs parameter is defined as params Expression<Func<TModel, T>>[] args, which means that the argument list of usingCalculation is not checked at compile time the argument list (weight, height) is redundantly defined in both usingCalculation and withInputs I am sure that this kind of system of dependent variables must be common in computational mathematics, physics, finance, and other fields. Does someone know of an established set of ideas that deal with what I'm grasping at here? Would this be a suitable application for a functional language like F#? Edit More context: The model currently exists in an Excel spreadsheet, and is being migrated to a C# application. It is run on-demand, and the variables can be modified by the user from the application's UI. Its purpose is to retrieve variables that the business is interested in, given current inputs from the markets, and model parameters set by the business.

• Used SQL Svr 2008 Config Manager to Set Service Account to Local System: What Did It Change?

  Direct shot to foot moment... While setting-up individual non-admin accts for MSSQLSERVER services, I temporarily set Server service login to Local System account. I remembered later that: SQL Server Configuration Manager performs additional configuration such as setting permissions in the Windows Registry so that the new account can read the SQL Server settings. I want my Local System back . (Actually just restored to its original security profile) Any advice? Thanks!

• Would it be possible to swap system restore points on different brands of computers?

  So I have a ThinkPad computer that I've installed a program called "Deep Freeze" which restores your computer to the "Frozen" state. I also have a Toshiba computer with no Deep Freeze on it. My question is that would it be possible to creat a system restore point on my Toshiba and then replace the system volume information folder with the one on the ThinkPad so I could restore to a point with no Deep Freeze? Would this work?

For example, Empathy minimizes to the system tray (mail icon) when the close button is pressed in the application window. How do I make Evolution do this as well? Essentially I would like to have Evolution hidden in the system tray instead of having to re-launch it every ten minutes to check for new messages (or leave it open and clutter the taskbar).

• Problem recreating BCD on Windows 7 64bit - The requested system device cannot be found

  NVIDIA drivers upgrade crashed my Windows 7 installation, so I'm working to undo the damage. What I can do: I can boot Windows install from the USB drive, and I can boot the Hiren's Boot CD. Although automated Windows repair fails, I can get to command prompt when I boot Windows install from USB drive, and I can see my drive and all my data. What I cannot do: I cannot boot into Windows - I get this message: Windows failed to start. A recent hardwware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1.insert windos cd and run a repair your computer option. File: /boot/bcd Status: 0xc000000f Info: an error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data. It seems that something is wrong with my /Boot/BCD, so I'm trying to recreate it from scratch. I've tried all the methods detailed here (including Windows repair which fails), and I'm left with the last one (near the bottom of that page). When I type the following command as in the tutorial: bcdedit.exe /import c:\boot\bcd.temp ...it fails with the following error: The store import operation has failed. The requested system device cannot be found. Many Google results say that I must use diskpart to set my partition active, however it's already set as active. Also, when I try this: bcdedit /enum It fails with similar message: The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found. Does anyone know what does that error message mean, and what is the requested system device? I'd like to avoid having to reinstall Windows since all the files on disk seem to be fine.

  Hello, I've been noticing this since Windows Vista. I see it on Windows 7, now, as well. In any case throughout the day I notice that my computer makes apparently random device-connect and/or device-disconnect ("boink") sounds. I suppose it is the same sound you hear when connecting or disconnecting a USB device such as a thumb drive. I've noticed that this happens on each of three computers I work with at home, my wife's computer, and my machine at work. It happens without any user action at all - i.e. I'll be just sitting there (hands off my mouse and keyboard), and the computer will make the sound. There is no visual queue or anything. Just the sound. I have sometimes gone in pursuit of the sound - running virus scans, examining event logs and such, and observing task manager - but have never had any luck tracking this thing down, but have not had any luck. Surely someone else out there must be experiencing this, too. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve

• BIOS and Windows cannot detect CDROM device

  Hello! I have a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4521B dvdrom device and a big problem. Some days ago everything worked fine. A friend installed some software and then the drives in winxp has been marked as corrupt. I uninstalled the software, but still corrupt drives. The next step I have done was running the current software GCC-4521B101(E).exe. When I ran this software again, the drives was automatically updated, but still marked as corrupt (in the Device Manager), even if I did a reboot. And then the big mistake: once more I tried to run this software, but during the update process, the machine restarted and boom! The DVDROM device doesn't work anymore. The led doesn't blink and if I push the eject button, nothing happens. Also bios and winxp doesn't recognize the optical drive. Then I plugged an other optical drive and it worked, but my old drive seems to be dead. So, what happened and how to solve this problem? Please help. Regards!

• Disable or remove filter driver for single HID device

  Running Windows XP in a corporate setting here. I have an issue where a filter driver is interfering with the functionality of different USB HIDs. For example graphics tablets do not respond while the filter driver is in place. I've also had the issue with foot pedals used with transcription software. My question is really two fold: A) what makes Windows use a filter driver on one HID but not another? B) when a filter driver is causing conflicts how can I disable it on the affected devices? Background I've previously narrowed down the issue to the filter driver by uninstalling the software (Funk Proxy Host) responsible for the filter driver. The software is a type of RDP we use here at work. (I might have even booted into safe mode and renamed the file, I forget). I believe the filter driver is present to disable or modify the use of the local keyboard and mouse while admin staff are assisting users. Either way I don't have the authority to just go uninstalling this software. As far as I can tell the software versions are the same, however I'm not sure if the device driver definitions are all the same as I don't know where these things would be located. To check for the presence of the filter driver I locate the hardware device in Device Manager, click Properties Driver tab Driver Details.... It shows up as ph32ihid.sys. Even though all machines are meant to have the same SOE and do have Funk Proxy Host installed I don't always have issues with the same HIDs. A few machines here the foot pedals without any issues. I've not had any machines work with the graphics tablet without uninstalling Funk software. Driver details I've just read up a bit more about filter drivers and found the drivers description in the registry under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ProxyHostHIDFilter" There it's called "Kernel-mode HID filter driver for the Proxy Host". Presumably I could also disable it here but that would be system wide which is probably not desirable?

• Use old raid drive as boot device without data loss

  There were two disks in sw-raid. There were /dev/md1 as swap, /dev/md2 as boot and a /dev/md3 with ext4. The sw-raid was disabled by stopping and removing mdadm and then zeroing the superblock on each /dev/mdX partition with: sudo mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sda1 sudo mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sda2 sudo mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sda3 In the disk that is the first boot device, I don't know if it's relevant, the system type of each partition was set back from fd to 82 or 83 with fdisk, /etc/fstab was updated, changing /dev/mdX to /dev/sdaX, and grub was reinstalled on the boot partition (/dev/sda2) with grub-instal. But the system wont boot. What else should I do to use this disk as the boot device without reinstall or data loss? • Take a regular Windows 7 clone with clonezilla (device-to-image)

  I am unexperienced with cloning software and I've decided to use Clonezilla as it seemed best as freeware. I chose device image and left most options standard. I chose expert mode anyway to see what I could configure, and decided to try the lzop algorithm instead of the default one for compression. The rest was left at default. When Clonezilla asked me which partitions to clone (I chose parts to image), I chose the C:\ drive but Windows 7 also creates a 100MB partition on setup for system files (the actual boot partition?). I copied that into the image as well. The reason I didn't choose disk to image is that I also have a data partition that needs to stay intact. Now I'm simply not sure that this is the way to go, should I ever need to restore my disk image. Will Clonezilla know what to do with both partitions and will Windows 7 work perfectly after restoring? Edit: apparantly a similar question has been asked before. The link to the first article in the answer is not relevant to me since it covers a device-to-device clone. It appears the windows installation disk can repair the 100MB partition. As for Clonezilla, it copies "hidden data after the MBR" by default too. I don't know, I feel I'll be allright whether by restoring the partition with Clonezilla or repairing it with the Windows 7 disk.

• How to fix Windows 7 device removal notification loop

  Bit of an odd one this. One of our PCs is getting caught in a loop some time after being turned on, usually after a USB storage device has been attached - sometimes an iPod, sometimes a GPS. Specifically, Windows Explorer starts showing a drive icon and letter (E:, as of right now) for the System partition (the small hidden one at the start of the boot drive). Then, the icon disappears. Then it reappears again. And disappears. It does this very quickly, at what looks like maybe 50 times a second. CPU usage in this loop is also very high; averages about 66%. This machine has an i7 920 CPU, which is quad core with hyperthreading; so this usage rate works out to about 5 100% busy threads, along with whatever normal idle load is (particularly Task Manager itself). Inspecting with Process Explorer shows that the device removal notification infrastructure has gone berserk. The threads in system service processes (i.e. apart from Windows Explorer) which are using all the CPU power relate to device notification. The Disk Management MMC snap-in also fails to run when the loop starts. The only way to break the loop, it seems, is to reboot the machine. Anyone seen anything similar to this, and know of a way to fix it? Machine details: Windows 7 x64, fully patched i7 920, 12GB RAM Intel SSD 80GB (X25-M, I believe; not G2) 2TB 5.2K disk for bulk storage AMD HD 5870 Further hardware details await. I'm going to go through and update all drivers I can find.

• building a debian base image

  Is there a preferred way to create base images for Debian-based customized installations? We are currently going with multistrap but although it's better than hand-crafted chroot stuff, it still has a lot of edges and corners. Is there a more reliable and less error-prone way to produce a root filesystem of a Debian installation with some additional .debs installed? (I don't want to send out a Debian installer with a preseed file though.) Addendum 1: To clarify things a bit: We are delivering some kind of software appliance to our customers. That is, a debian operating system, with some additional software packages -- both our own and third-party ones -- and some configuration changes. To ease the installation process, we have an installer that does nothing more than partitioning, copying files to the partitions and setting up grub. So it's basically an image-based installer. So we are basically running the debian installation ourselves and just distribute the already installed operating system. The question is about the installation part. I want to have that as easy and robust as possible, and of course, it should be an automated process.
