  • Visual Basic 2010 Language Enhancements

    Earlier this month Microsoft released Visual Studio 2010, the .NET Framework 4.0 (which includes ASP.NET 4.0), and new versions of their core programming languages: C# 4.0 and Visual Basic 10 (also referred to as Visual Basic 2010). Previously, the C# and Visual Basic programming languages were managed by two separate teams within Microsoft, which helps explain why features found in one language was not necessarily found in the other. For example, C# 3.0 introduced collection initializers, which enable developers to define the contents of a collection when declaring it; however, Visual Basic 9 did not support collection initializers. Conversely, Visual Basic has long supported optional parameters in methods, whereas C# did not. Recently, Microsoft merged the Visual Basic and C# teams to help ensure that C# and Visual Basic grow together. As explained by Microsoft program manager Jonathan Aneja, "The intent is to make the languages advance together. When major functionality is introduced in one language, it should appear in the other as well. ... [T]hat any task you can do in one language should be as simple in the other." To this end, with version 4.0 C# now supports optional parameters and named arguments, two features that have long been part of Visual Basic's vernacular.     Microsoft are hosting a launch event for Visual Studio 2010 on Friday 16th April in Edinburgh. The have managed to convince one of the head honchos from the Visual Studio product team to come to Scotland. With Scott Guthrie last week in Glasgow and now Jason Zander, Global General Manager for Visual Studio will be arriving in Edinburgh for the Launch event. There will be two speakers for the event, Jason will be up first and will be doing a session on Windows, Web, Cloud and Windows Phone 7 development with Visual Studio 2010. Second up is Giles Davis the UK’s Technical Specialist for Visual Studio ALM (formally Visual Studio Team System) who will be introducing the new Visual Studio 2010 Developer and tester collaboration features.   • C# development with Mono and MonoDevelop

    In the past two years, I have been developing .NET from my MacBook by running Windows XP into VM Ware and more recently into Virtual Box from OS X. This way, I could install Visual Studio and be able to work seamlessly. But, this way of working has a major down side: it kills the battery of my laptop… I can easiely last for 3 hours if I stay in OS X, but can only last 45 min when XP is running. Recently, I gave MonoDevelop a try for developing Developer IT‘s tools and web site. While being way less complete then Visual Studio, it provides essentials tools when it comes to developping software. It works well with solutions and projects files created from Visual Studio, it has Intellisence (word completion), it can compile your code and can even target your .NET app to linux or unix. This tools can save me a lot of time and batteries! Although I could not only work with MonoDevelop, I find it way better than a simple text editor like Smultron. Thanks to Novell, we can now bring Microsoft technology to OS X.

I had been reading on some websites in regards to some web hosting companies having the inability to run scripts on their servers (jQuery) which causes a big problem since the website I am in the process of making is very jQuery driven. Can anyone recommend some good web hosting companies that they had good experience with? As of now, I checked out Google's web-hosting service and read up on a few companies from Top 10 Web Hosting List but would like a few recommendations.

  • Web framework for IPad and common desktop browsers?

    We are developing a web-based, commercial point-of-sale application. We'd like the same web site to work well on an Ipad as well a desktop browsers. We're looking for a web framework that makes the site look good on an IPad, but also makes the site work well in a desktop browser such as Chrome, IE, or Firefox on Windows or a Mac. I found quite a few at 18 Mobile Frameworks and Development Tools for Creating iPhone Apps Most of them, such as JQTouch, help a web site look and act more like a native IPhone application but they don't emphasize the cross platform/browser experience. The exception seems to be Sproutcore, which seems to be a full-fledged javascript MVC application framework. I did have trouble getting some of the demos to work under Chrome, but what did work looks good. What framework(s) have you actually used to develop web sites to work on an Ipad and desktop browser? If you didn't use a framework, how did you get it to work well under both environments?

  • jQuery + Perl CGI to vb.net transition

    I've been developing oracle database-heavy "web applications" forever by building my html by hand, adding some jquery to handle ajax requests (html inserts for forms processing etc), and always did my server side stuff in perl cgi. I really love how easy it is to read some form input, execute some select statements through dbi (SO EASY), and generate HTML to be inserted by the jquery request. That's a web application to me. However, my new boss builds everything in visual studio 2010, vb.net, usually webforms. So, for work reasons, I now need to start developing in vb.net so it can be collectively maintained, and I'm just seeking advice on where to start learning/how to approach this. I know I could at least learn ASP.net and VB.net, and create a webform, have it read parameters, return HTML, etc. which would allow me to use my previously written HTML and client-side scripts (jQuery). Although- since we're moving heavily to mobile applications I really need to reduce client-side processing load. Is there any advantage to my boss' method? Thanks a ton.

    I am in need of some advice/references. I am currently trying to develop a legal document interface. There are certain fields in which I need to query out of my sql db and have those fields output into a document that can be printed. I am trying to develop a user interface where people can enter fields that will output to a document template but at the same time I need the template to be able to pull data from the SQL database. This is the reason why I think that VB might be my best choice and because it is one of the only OOP languages I am familiar with presently. Does anyone know that best way to be able to handle this type of job?? I know that you can use VBA within MS Word and have the form output variables to a word template. But, is there a way to have the word document also pull information from the SQL db? Is the best option to use VB linked to SQL and run queries to get the information from the database and then have it output to a for within VB? Is it possible for VB to be linked to a SQL db and output variables and SQL fields to a Word Template? I have looked into Mail Merge and I see that it allows users to pull data from an Access query but I dont think it would be easy to automate and it seems that users would need to have an advanced knowledge of MS Word and Access to handle this. I am not finding much useful information online so I came here. Any advice or references would be greatly appreciated. If there is a better way please let me know.

    I'm debugging some code and I need to break everytime, when character in string (const char *) is equal to something. So I put there breakpoint and attach condition like: s[0] == 'e'. But code I'm debugging is in CRT and there is possibility, that s == 0 is true. So "addressing empty pointer" should give some kind of error. Yes - I could give there condition s != 0, but it would not be such fun :) And I'm curious, what will debugger do when trying to evaluate this condition? How it will behave internally? Obviously it's not giving any error nor stopping on this breakpoint when s == 0 Thanks for your answer.

  • Working with Subversion the same as with Visual Source Safe in Visual Studio

    Hi, At work I just started using subversion with ankhsvn instead of visual source safe. I managed to integrate it well enough but it doesn't seem the same. Using VSS the following would happen: A user check out a file by right clicking and selecting "check out" or by editing it. If another user tried to modify the same file he would get an error. No 2 users could edit the same file at the same time. No fancy merging. No conflicts and no conflict resolutions. I understand the the philosophy behind subversion is different but is there any way that this behavior described above could be duplicated with subversion? There is an option in ankhSVN called "Automatically lock files on change..." but even if I activate this option when I edit a file it never gets automatically locked. Even if this option worked the other users wouldn't see the lock until they comited the file. They wouldn't get an error when they tried to edit it like they would in Visual Source Safe. So basically: can Visual Source Safe's behavior be duplicated using Subversion and ankhSVN?

But, today I do not see this option. More over, I do not think I have a solution file, and I think that has something to do with it. But can web site model, also, have a solution file for this setting or not a solution file? What determines that? I am interested in using this method on on a web site, i.e directory only model.

    Hi, I am attempting to compile QtScriptGenerator (gitorious) with Visual Studio 2010 (C++) and have run into a compile error. In searching for a solution, I have seen occasional references to compile breakages introduced since VS2008 due to changes in VS2010's implementation of STL and/or c++0x conformance changes. Any ideas what is happening below, or how I could go about fixing it?
